So I played this akuma player last night who did literally nothing except jab shoryukens to build meter and then super. I sat back and watched it over and over.
Then won.
Another player match had this dude using dee jay. He turned off the timer and just sat in the corner, throwing max outs and doing upkicks on jump ins, then 7hit crossup combos on wakeup. Then back to the corner..
I beat him too but it wasn't as easy as the akuma. Surprisingly quality dj shenanigan, if you don't have to worry about time and can play just defense.
Of course he quit after losing. (he had like 20 straight wins before I came in) Why is it fun to play like that?

I haven't skipped class this semester for this exact reason :)
I've never straight-up skipped class. Closest thing was when VF5 hit teh 360, and I just couldn't fucking stop playing the game. I was in my accounting class, and I just got up and left in the middle of it to go play more of the game.
I won't skip class for SFIV, either, but I'll probably pull another stunt like that.
I might just get the PC version and play it in class..
Just msg me on PSN Puma

jer7583
02-08-2009, 09:04 PM
So if anyone could help me with this, i'd appreciate it, because it's a consistent frustration.
What the fuck are you supposed to do about shotos that do those wakeup crossup/jump in MK/HK shit?
It's like, seriously my main weakness. I can't fucking stand the way these assholes get free hits and just lock you down every single time you're getting up and it feels like chun is powerless against it. If it's not that it's a stream of hadoukens and then jab shoryukens one after the other.
Those last two aren't as bad, but I just fucking hate playing shotos and hate that they're so damn popular.
Her neutral air LK isn't any good cause the hitboxes don't mesh, and blocking just is a temporary solution and seems to just encourage throws and more lockdown hits. Plus after blocking the shit they just jump in again for another round of bullshit.
I can beat them, sometimes. But it's always this kinda crap that loses me matches to shoto players. Jump in HK, Duck HK. Duck HK. Duck HK. jump in, etc. etc.

Chun is weak against full-screen players. You have to practice your spacing and work on fighting closer to opponents.

That's why you gotta keep playing - you don't just suddenly pick up skillz - you learn that shit gradually. You'll get it eventually, even if you think you won't.

02-08-2009, 10:05 PM
Don't worry, I get lost in the lingo also, I just don't have the time to learn a fighter anymore.
Yeah, you have to keep watching and playing against those "higher level" players to pick up the strategies. And don't fret about losing--it's ok to sacrifice wins to learn the timing, spacing, and move situations if you are serious about taking it to the next level.
On the other hand, you could be like me and just play whoever just for giggles. There's no shame in playing casually or just for fun.

I suppose, but getting closer just helps them set up these crossups and stuff. I guess chun needs to be at just the right distance for shotos.

It's really hard to cross up Chun-Li, especially online. I suggest learn how to walk under their attempts and throw them as they land.
If you can't get under them and they jump early, try using standing jab as AA.

I'm trying to do some research on HDTV lag in fighters, before I upgrade from my old CRT. Been checking out threads on SRK and AVSforum, but it's a lot to take in. I'd be using an Xbox 360 with the default component cables (no HDMI). Anyone got recommendations for a first-time HDTV buyer? I've seen a few references to Panasonic plasmas being preferable when it comes to minimizing lag... anyone care to confirm or deny?

I believe Bison's basic combo is short -> cr. med kick -> knee press
You can also go into a tick throw setup off st. shorts.
His fake slide is fun to play around with for free throws. But this almost never works against button mashers or turbo $$$s.
His touch of death combo is j. Roundhouse -> st. Short -> cr. Forward -> Fierce Knee Press. Basically it dizzies 100% after the first combo and takes away 50+%. Repeat one more time to finish the opponent.
His j. Forward is really good for cross ups, jump aways, and instant overheads.
His cr. Forward is really good as a poke and meaty attack.
Try to space adequately with knee press so you only hit them once. Hit twice with it, and you risk getting thrown or reversed.
His anti-air is basically air-to-air. Notably j. Strong and j. Roundhouse (neutral).
Plasmas should have less lag than LCDs, and Panasonic's are among the better ones.
If you go with LCD, I'd recommend a Samsung as the "Game Mode" should be able to upscale most images to 480p, which ultimately reduces the lag.
You could also stick to VGA cables/adapters and run it through a VGA box, but that can be kind of expensive.
FYI Hi Def images generally don't lag on Hi Def TVs.

Those forum threads got me paranoid though... although I'm sure the SRK crowd would be way more nit-picker than most about that issue.

Confirmed, as I have a Panny plasma and have no problems playing Beatmania which is like the most timing-dependent game.
Problem with game mode on Samsungs is that there's still a ton of lag if you aren't on VGA, and you can't adjust the picture settings in game mode. And that shit's just nowhere near as good.

Speaking of HDMI cables, in my research I've seen conflicting reports as to whether the 360 can really output 1080p without HDMI (i.e. old 360's with component cables are S.O.L.). I might just go for 720p anyway so I might be fine.
Some say that the 720p vs. 1080p difference doesn't even become apparent until you hit a particular size of screen. Some say 40", some say 50". I'm thinking that if the extreme videophiles are saying 40", than a mere humanoid like myself would probably be fine at 42" 720p.
Thx for the responses people!! You are indirectly playing a part in making my SFIV (and overall 360) experience as purrdy as possible.

so is 3S and SFIV. The official guide for SFIV even has frame data in it (for the arcade characters)
I said it before, but Guilty Gear games have mechanics that cut down blockstun and stagger frames, Street Fighter does not so it's much more strict in frame counting vs. Guilty Gear where those things always change.

As JEKKI mentioned, what fighting game isn't heavy on frames. I know everyone here has at least played CVS2 for thirty seconds and seen how strict that game is on frames. Guilty Gear isn't the only guilty party here. All this bickering is silly. Not to start shit but all the bickering going back and forth is lame. Outside FG alum, I don't even know who the fuck anyone is in this thread anymore.
As some of the alum have mentioned, SFIV is an acquired taste. I took a handful of my friends out to SJSU late 08' to play and some liked it and some just weren't that impressed.
Also not to be a dick (as I am nowdays), but Flood....if you can use SAIII what tips would you need? Just learn Yun's BnB, Block Strings, Kara Cancel/Kara Cancel Palm, various Genei Jin setups, Command throw, etc etc..

I just don't care that much about really getting deep into fighters anymore, though I still love playing the hell out of them online.
In some ways my standards have dropped. but in other ways, they've improved, as I'll probably never play DoA or Mortal Kombat again.
I wish there was a good online version of Guilty Gear. #Reload is online and BC, but that's probably the laggiest game I've ever played in my life.

dont get me wrong, I think it's a fantastic product and got mine on pre-order, but most gamers consider the item as if it's a must have when at the end of the day they understand absolutely nothing about it. $150 is A LOT of money and I have no doubts kids will eventually let that $150 collect dust or immediately be like "ummm... what's so $150 about this?!?!"
like you pointed out earlier, the Play Magazine review on the standard stick is excellent. People think I'm stupid crazy for buying arcade sticks all the time... I don't give a fuk, I do what I like...
..but you can actually play :)
I think (maybe) one of JEKKI's points is that people are getting hype over the stick and forgetting about skill level. Who knows maybe all those kids who bought the stick intending to play SFIV/SFHD hours on end to get better somehow get discouraged out of it. Then the TE becomes a $150 paper weight.
I know good equipment is always key to getting better, but I think part of it is that you should be concerned about your execution. If you can't DP on command on a $45 joystick that has a square gate, moving up to a stick triple that (again with a square gate) won't do much to help things. For the same reason I see a lot of sticks going up on Ebay months after for players blaming their execution on the components of the stick. Let's face it, as I mentioned, new players or casual players can get discouraged quickly. If they can't pull the same stuff on a D-Pad on a stick, they don't bother. I have a couple of friends that are like this and is the reason they stay away from sticks like the plague.
The "limited" numbers are definitely hyping up what is already a quality stick. Hell, as I told MarkMan the hype even got to me. I have a HRAP2 SA, a Sanwa Stick/Button Modded T5 Stick and a Custom Happ PSX/PS2 stick and I still considered the TE (even with it's PS3/PC only capabilities)

hankmecrankme
02-10-2009, 10:19 AM
The main reason I'm getting my TE stick is because I really, really need a 360 stick, and it seems to be everything I could want in one. If I bought a regular one, I'd just mod it ASAP anyway, so I went straight for the TE stick. I do want a regular one still to make it all Seimitsu for shmups, but I don't have that kind of money to spend after the TE stick and SFIV.
I will dual mod it, but it's not a necessity. I already have my modded Namco that kicks ass and my big ass Happ custom that I use on PS2/PS3/GC/Xbox/DC/PC thanks to adapters. I could just leave my TE stick stock and be fine with it as a 360/PC only stick. But I'm not like that. ;)
$150 is pricey, but I'll use it a ton on my 360/PC, so I'll get my money's worth.

The TE Stick is a luxury item, plain and simple. But, not everyone wants it because they're godly at fighting games or know all the intricacies that make a good stick.
Some people want it because it's Street Fighter IV... and they want the real arcade experience that most regions of the U.S. are sorely lacking. Some people want it because they collect anything and everything Street Fighter related. Some people want it because they like pretty boxes.
Most importantly, some people want it because they want to learn to play stick and won't settle for mediocre. As many people as there are that are buying into the hype, there are more people who want to buy the stick for any/all of the above reasons. And those are all very valid reasons.
A lot of gamers today are young professionals who have that cash to burn and always wanted to have an arcade stick when they were younger... or maybe they want to relive their experiences in the arcade. I wouldn't discount purchasers of the TE stick just because they don't know understand exactly what they're buying... they'll learn.

I bought into the TE because it's the best retail stick the 360 has to offer judging by the parts and feedback from people who have used it. The 360 is my fighting game system this generation so I want to have that one REALLY good stick that will last me for the rest of the 360's lifespan.

Wow. Really disappointing... but not surprising. It's probably going to be the least popular costume pack in the whole bunch, so no wonder they're giving it away for free... well there's that and the fact that it's the first DLC pack released, but I like my first theory better. :D

As to why I'm getting the TE... probably the same reason as the other people here -- just wanna have the best. Going back to the Tekken stick a few weeks ago was pretty bad, since I no longer had any real sense of direction with that stick, and the buttons felt ghetto. here's what I think,
if you are a gamer that wants to buy and play new Tekken, new King of Fighters, new BlazBlue etc, then yes the TE stick is an excellent INVESTMENT.
Street Fighter IV is bringing hella ppl back into the fighting game genre that are gonna exit as soon as they enter, leaving $200+ behind.

hype doesn't upset me but the aftermath of what it happens, that does upset me.
i mean we got people who keep slamming on the EX2 as a piece of garbage but i will destroy most people with the EX2 at HD because they spend more time researching sanwa and seimitsu than learning how to block a crossup and then reversal SRK.

I'm scrubby as hell now. I just like nicer things. I used to be beastly with an SNES pad and Ascii Fighting Stick. I could still use one if I needed to, but I prefer the nicer sticks.
Stock Namco sticks are so good. I would've had no problem leaving mine stock, but it was worn out so much. It needed an upgrade. I rocked the stock Green Goblin on DC so much that the stick started "sticking" because the spring was so worn. I've used a variety of sticks and pads, and I'll slum it up if I need to. But if given the choice, hell yeah I'm going for Sanwa/Seimitsu.
I really love my Sony Trinitron, but that's because I've used the old beater 19" wood panel TVs and RF up until 1995, then I started using a 13" Goldstar PC monitor from 1983 that I got from a garage sale for 20 bucks that had composite video, which was a huge step up from RF for me. Now I play in 720p, and I enjoy it so much more because I have perspective. I know what it's like to slum it up in the ghetto. Same with sticks and pads. Not saying the EX2 is anywhere near the "quality" of the Ascii Fighting Stick, the EX2 smokes it. But I am saying that I prefer nicer parts than the EX2 offers. If the EX2 is fine for anyone, then more power to you.

I think its battered wife syndrome. The 360 d-pad has beat their hands so consistently over the past 3 years that they're afraid to leave it. What the fuck else would explain it...a clearly better dpad comes out for the system that has needed it most of any system in history and they go "nah, i kinda have to press harder and oh yeah, no rumble."

We played MvC2 at an arcade in LA a few years ago. It was at a movie theater, and the machine was on free play, so we went to town. The sticks and buttons were very worn, but we still had a blast. I still could play it just like I can on new parts. As long as it's functional, I can use it.
I think every SF2 machine I've ever played on between the 5 versions of it had at least one button not working, usually fierce punch and usually on the 2P side.

I do damn well with the stock 360 controller, but its the uppercuts at key moments i end up missing which really screws up my game. Its why i stick to gief and balrog so often these days, they're super easy to win with without having to use the uppercut motion.
I'm confused, so now y'all are saying the TE stick is hype just because it's popular with more than the hardcore fighting crowd, or are we just saying that the TE stick is hype because it has the SFIV license?
All I know is, there'll always be haters and I ain't gonna sweat 'em by trying to "keep it real". I just buy what I want and play what I want.

The TE stick is hyped because of its quality. It won't make you a better player. That kind of hype. Like buying Air Jordans didn't make me able to dunk. I blame that on being white and 5 foot 8.
Ohhh...well, that goes without saying, doesn't it? I don't think there's anything wrong with a casual player wanting a TE. Granted, they could be doing it for the wrong reasons, but really, that's not my problem. For me, I'm willing to pay the premium for quality, if and when I can afford it, and to me the TE stick represents a quality joystick I can use for XBLA games, 360 shmups, and 360 fighters. There really aren't a lot of other options as far as quality arcade sticks for 360.

It'd be cool to go back and play some PS2 fighters/shooters with it :D

I ordered 6 Sanwa buttons in one order and put it through. Minutes later I forgot that I needed 8 and put a 2nd order through of only 2 buttons. They automatically combined my orders realizing it was going to the same place and refunded me for overpaid shipping.

I'm getting the TE because there's no way I'm going to play SFIV on the 360 controller. I basically have 4 choices:
1. fightpad
2. RE fightstick
3. TE fightstick
4. EX2
If I feel like spending $150 for the best one, why the fuck not? I probably wouldn't have spent more than that though... speaking of the stick, what's this bullshit?

I got the same delay from Amazon on my Fightpads. Both of them. Really annoying, since they didn't give me any sort of email or warning. I really hate pre-ordering from Amazon with Super Saver Shipping. It's really just no excuse. I should be getting my package later because of slow ass shipping by USPS, not because Amazon wants to punish me for not having Prime.
And I do live around Baltimore. I've never tried checking out 7-11s in the area, but I remember reading that they broke the street date for Gears 2 and a few other games. There's a good chance that if any 7-11's in the area sell games (the radio advertises that they do sometimes) and they're selling Street Fighter IV, that they could care less about the street date.

Apologies to Hank and HeavyD, I traded my PS3 copy of SCIV towards my existing pre-order for SFIV (PS3).
I'll only owe about $13-14 bucks day of release, which makes me happy. Working two jobs is squeaking me by. If I have to trade in stuff I won't have the time to finish (don't care to keep) to pay for SFIV (which I'll play forever), I'll go do that.

All of the amazon orders are dated the 25th, because by some retarded happening the release date in their system says that, and they think they'll be punished if they ship it earlier.

Robbery. It's GS/EB of course! They extended their SFIV pre-order trade in, so you get another 20% if you put your trades to an SFIV reserve. Didn't have the time or patience to throw that shit on Ebay, or else I would've done that.

360 for me. Might hold off on buying it until my stick is ready, cuz it would feel stupid to put up with the pad for like a week and then switch. May as well just wait a week or so and then really debut the game in style! Unless I end up going for a CE, in which case I'll pick it up ASAP (if that's even possible in my area at this point).

Both.
And GG's option and beef. I really can't get into HD Remix today. Really out of it from being tired.

I plan on PC when the PC version hits as well, so expect me there as well.
update on FGT film:
Looks like due to costume delays due to them being custom fitted/made in china, I have to shoot my film 2 weeks later, but that's good because I needed that time.
Due to needing to have a short film done in 2 weeks, I'll be making a short that coincides with the main film (ie. side story). The character will be JEKKI and about what he does when he's not fighting.
As soon as the JEKKI suit is made I'll post pics... it's the easiest to make, I only need to find the right sized box.
The ranger suits are kicking ass so far... I have the visors and suits good to go, and all I need now is white boots/socks and white gloves, so if anyone has links to well priced gloves (preferably long) that would be superb!
