It was a few pages back, but I'm not helping the shoto problem with my ken.

Played quite a few matches last night, won a little over half. Played some really good people, and some really shitty ones, not much in between.

It always seems like the coolest and nicest dudes I meet on PSN fighting games are black dudes. Almost Everytime I play someone who sounds white they talk mad shit and spam the cheapest tactics possible.

Anybody else finding themselves trying to hit forward to parry?

So I'm probably about 15:3 in SFIV now. And I unlocked two characters. :D

Question: Can someone explain SFIV basics to me? It seems like the defense meter builds up ultras. This is the meter used for focus attacks too right? To fill that meter, you need to get hit? The other meter is used for EX attacks and supers right? To fill that meter, you have to use be offensive? How come the defense meter has a split in the center?

for Focus Attacks there is no metter you hit MP+MK and if you tap it, it breaks the defense quickly, hold it down all the way and its an unblockable.

When you get hit it fills your revenge meter, half way up and you can use an ultra, fill it all the way up and that ultra hits harder.

The Super meter also fills from getting hit but nowhere as fast, it relies on offense mostly, and your EX attacks take away from that meter. To do a super you need that meter full.

Also I cant stand C.Viper.

I can totally agree with you in regards to STHDR. E. Honda is a masher's paradise and his ridiculous invincible properties on his headbutt don't help much either. Stored Ochio is bullshit too, especially when I play Bison who pretty much is totally shutdown.

Oh, I'm talking specifically about SFIV. I didn't bite on HD Remix...I figured if I wanted to play something like that I'd bust out the Anniversary collection.

After playing with the Fightpad last night, I can safely put my worries to rest. The thing felt just perfect for me. I've never used a better controller in my life for fighters. Granted, I don't have a Saturn pad handy, but as soon as I booted up SF4 and held the controller in my hands, it was perfect.

I nailed all specials and had absolutely no issues at all with the diagonals.

My only concern is with people saying it breaks after extended use... in which case, I'll be testing it over and over again to make sure it doesn't do that, heh. Hopefully, it doesn't fall apart on me, but initial impressions after 5 hours of play are superb.

I can't believe I'm still up and playing this game. Shit, it's 6:40am. I hate this game because it's like crack, it's addicting. Still unlocking characters, going through challenge mode, and playing online matches.

Anyway, I (Rose) played this best of 5 online match with an Akuma. The first round starts out with the guy spamming fireballs. I'm like "ok", *uses Soul Reflect*. Eventually, I got tired of it after 10 to 15 fireballs. So, when I advanced forward; he starts moving his Akuma back into the corner like a damn turtle, spamming his standing and jumping fireballs at me.

Dude, this is like a reenactment of Super Mario Bros. on the NES = 8-bit bowser shooting his mixed fireballs up and down, while 8-bit mario avoids it. So, when I got into striking distance, I put in a couple of attack moves and focus attacks to punish him. That's when his ultra meter went up and his Akuma caught me with the raging demon taking away half of my life bar, thus I died in the first round :).

The second, third, fourth, and last round were pretty much the same routine, but this time I would jump away like a wuss whenever he got his ultra meter on full. I guess I'm a wussy turtle too, lol. I just wanted to play it safe against a spammy Akuma. In the end, I won by busting out the shamwow special move at the end. The last round was a nail-biter for me.

Alright, that's all, I just wanted to share my SF4 experience with you guys ;)

Okay so I got that "Ashley" phone call from GameStop around noon yesterday, telling me the game was IN.

I called the GameStop just to be sure, and they said it would be in at 2PM.

When I got to the GameStop after work, around 5:30, there was a CROWD of people there just for Street Fighter... and the game still hadn't come in yet!!!! Well apparently it had been shipped, but for some reason this store had to like borrow all their copies from another GameStop in the area. So I waited in this crowd for a while until finally (after 6:00) this guy comes in with a bunch of boxes from the other GameStop. Wheeee!

Didn't get home until later but I got to mess around with the game a bit after midnight. LOVING it so far. I'm impressed by how "snappy" the controls feel and the overall look and presentation is just beautiful. I'm kinda just gonna screw around with it for this first week while I'm waiting for my stick in the mail... then I'll REALLY start digging in!

Oh and I'm wondering if anyone else had this weird issue with the CE. On that sheet of paper about the bonus costumes, there's this white rectangular space that looks like it's supposed to have a code written down. But the space is completely empty on mine! Did I get some whack defect, or are they all like that and I'm supposed to be looking somewhere else for the code?? Also the location of the soundtrack and movie discs seemed to be switched, but that's no big deal.

EDIT: aaaahhh just glanced at the gamercard thing in my sig and it's cool seeing SFIV in there :D
EDIT AGAIN: also just realized that my gamercard has three different Ryu faces in it, hahaha.
EDIT THIRD STRIKE: Or four if you count Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden lol.

I'm assuming you have the PS3 CE, which seems to be harder to come by?

You may want to try to contact someone like Sven on Capcom-Unity.com. Or create a thread in the Ask Capcom section of Capcom-Unity. They're pretty good about answering. Maybe they'll ask you to send in a picture of the codeless slip of paper and they'll give you a new code. I would try that, personally.

I watched The Ties That Bind last night. It was better than what I was expecting.Poor Cammy got the crap beaten out of her by Viper.:cry::cry::cry: It's not perfect, but I'm glad I got it.

So... it's not just the anime cutscenes from the game? If so, that's a relief. I was totally expecting to be disappointed by it.

And, no I didn't see any track listing for the CE. Maybe Capcom will release one postlaunch for us. I just posted a thread asking.

I don't believe I've seen any reused anime footage yet. There was a TON of Viper footage in The Ties That Bind that didn't make it into her story mode's videos the game. I can't be 100% sure just yet, though.8-)8-)8-)

I'm already a HRAPist. Just don't do any HRAPing on the 360 yet. And unfortunately, there's not a lot to HRAPe on the PS3.

But yeah, I love the look of that TE stick and all that and I'm almost tempted to wait for it, but I'm just incredibly paranoid that the thing'll break, given the reports thus far. If I can't buy something with confidence, I'm not going to buy it.

I'll mod the shit out of my HRAP EX.

Does SFIV let you do PPP moves with only two buttons? I set my triggers to 3P/3K last night and I felt all dirty (even though using a default 360 pad is a perfectly legitimate reason haha).

on a different note, they seem to have some fun combo mechanics in this. More permissive than SF2 series but certainly way more restrained than a Vs. title. I haven't done MUCH with it yet, but I was just playing around with Ken in training for a bit. Can most special moves be canceled into supers? I assume you have to be on the ground in most cases... it seemed like I was able to cancel a Fierce DP into a Super DP as long as it was during the first couple of hits (i.e. punching the guy in the gut before he actually jumps and spins). And I couldn't cancel a hurricane kick into anything, which I'm guessing is because he's technically airborne while he's doing it??

Also I may have read the term wrong (damn tiny txt on my SDTV) but what's up with "Link Combos"? Is that when you cancel a normal attack into another normal attack (I noticed Ken could do this with MP->HP)?

The scary part is, I totally knew the guy from this gamer gathering I used to go to at community college (which was as sad as it sounds.) It didn't hit me until I left the store though. I heard that basically everyone who used to attend the gathering dropped out of CC because of WoW. awkward :(

I would wait for it to penny out or $5.00 or something cheap. I guess the frame data is worth that much. Along with such insights as "The Hadoken is a very good move for Ryu and Ken."

I played Balrog for a bit yesterday... I actually liked playin' as the dude a lot, and I think I might finally be starting to understand how to play a charge character. I dunno, I just like the way that son moves in 4... a lot more than in 2 at least.

Playing on a stick probably helped, as well.

There are quite a few nice 26" 720p LCDs out there for about $300-350. Best Buy has a Toshiba and a Sharp for pretty decent prices, though I'm sure you can grab something online cheaper. I'm pretty sure the Toshiba was on sale for $329 when my father and I looked at it on Sunday...Also, the new Sony models are starting to hit stores, so last year's models are dropping fast. And if you have a Sam's membership, they have a 26" vizio in the same price range...

As a fighting gamer I assume you will want to keep LAG as low as possible, so here's what you should keep in mind:

- Most lag is caused by post-processing done by the TV itself. If you have an Xbox 360, try to have it outputting in the same resolution as the TV. The 360's scaler won't lag like a TV would, so that takes the workload off the TV.

- general consensus seems to be that plasmas lag less than LCDs

- consider what kind of inputs you will need. For example, I was gonna go for a Panasonic until I realized most of their models don't have a VGA input, or at least not a VGA input that accepts 1080p. Probably not an issue for you since 1080p really shouldn't be necessary for a 27" screen, but I'm just saying do careful research on the INPUTS!

that's what I got, hopefully it gives you some tidbit of info you can work with!

No "easy" button but I can at least share what I've come across in my own research (I'm about to buy a TV too!)

As a fighting gamer I assume you will want to keep LAG as low as possible, so here's what you should keep in mind:

- Most lag is caused by post-processing done by the TV itself. If you have an Xbox 360, try to have it outputting in the same resolution as the TV. The 360's scaler won't lag like a TV would, so that takes the workload off the TV.

- general consensus seems to be that plasmas lag less than LCDs

- consider what kind of inputs you will need. For example, I was gonna go for a Panasonic until I realized most of their models don't have a VGA input, or at least not a VGA input that accepts 1080p. Probably not an issue for you since 1080p really shouldn't be necessary for a 27" screen, but I'm just saying do careful research on the INPUTS!

that's what I got, hopefully it gives you some tidbit of info you can work with!

HDMI dvi converters are passive it just changes pinouts. That setup will be based on whatever the input lag and response time are which is hard to tell with just a brand name.

Yah but there is a difference between lag time and response time. Basically you have to do the tests yourself to figure out what it is (Basicly you use dual output on you pc and take a picture of the monitor and a crt monitor) Chances are the monitor you got is good enough just make sure you are running the xbox at 1920 x 1080 (closest res to your monitor) to minimize the work load of the monitor's scaler.

When I was an Inventory Supervisor at Borders we got stuff mis-shipped randomly. Everything from small FedEx boxes to pallets of entire books. Late last year I was expecting an important shipment of books (around 50 boxes w/ 1,600 items), found out FedEx shipped it to New Mexico. Yea, they weren't happy to get a call from me the day I found out.

Also you know if you weren't 2 hours away, I'd give you a ride to wherever your SFIV copy was. Hell, one of my friends who doesn't drive is at work right now and I'm driving him later to pick up his pre-order.

Are you sure it's HK to MP? I always thought combos worked from weak to strong, not the other way around.

Try doing a focus attack after the HK then qucikly cancel it by pressing f,f then do a MP.

monitor is the way to go!! I had a 19'' widescreen for my computer and played MGS4 on my regular TV... it sucked.

but sum1 on srk told me I can go HD using a computer monitor... it only costed me less than $20 and now I can read everything!! it's beautiful!!

all u need is a HDMI->DVI cable to connect your system to the monitor, and u can connect the sound from the s-video cable to the line-in on your computer.

I think u can only cancel a close HK, which is different from a far HK, so maybe you need to adjust your jump-in

Ohh, I though you ment Medium Punch, not a Medium Shoryuken. Make sure you're jumping in deep so when you do the HK the animation is diffrent. You can't link into a Shoryuken with a nomral HK, you must be close. You should finish doing the medium shoryuken as the HK hits. Same with the focus attack. It must register with the first hit of the Shoryuken. It's all very quick.

I'm in the same boat as JEKKI. Siting at work reading about how much fun you guys are having. :( Oh well, I got Thuirsday & Friday off :)

The game is really awesome so far
Only reason I have to put it down is so that I can study for the exam I have in about an hour lol
Me and my brother were playing, he was kicking my ass for a few minutes (and he's not much of a fighting game guy)
I'm just used to Chun-Li being so fast in SF2HD, so it feels kinda weird playing in SFIV
Can't wait till my Tournament Edition sticks show up on the 25th,

I agree. I remember when SFIV was first announced they mentioned something about downloadable characters as a possiblity. But if they're charging $20 for a costume pack I'm scared to see the price for a few new chaarcters.

I need help with the challenge mode. It's the first task of the third level for Chun Li. It ask for Heavy Kick then Hyakuretsu Kyaku. I can't seem to string this together. Does distance matter? I noticed that up close heavy kick is different then when you're out further. Either way, I can't seem to pull this off.

I picked up the 360 CE at bestbuy today. I have 105 battle points!

I don't have my stick yet though, so playing on 360 has been absolutely maddening. The best I can do is a mp shoryu fadc into NOTHHHING on my 360 pad.

I dont have an mc pad either, nor is my ps3 version shipped -_-

SFIV is good stuff.

I fought asiancore's Gouken and it was my first time fighting this character. I didn't know he had counters so I kept going in at him lol.

Another funny thing is I don't know how to use this version's Vega. For some reason I accidently did EX versions of Vega taking off his claw into EX taking off his mask. Then asiancore proceeded to ultra me.

my execution is downright garbage!! I jus cant adjust to the game's speed and engine...

I thinking of maining Blanka and Dhalsim rite now... I was able to do all of Sim's challenges, but with Blanka I cant land the very last one!!!

also with Blank I was trying to do knockdown, forward hop until you cross over the opponent, Ultra.

but apparently, holding the stick towards your opponent and crossing over him does not count as charge??? I donno... but it aint working for me, I cant even get a blanka ball out.

I figured out the timing...

after u hop over the opponent u can either

1. do one back hop, and walk back 2.5-~3 steps

2. do two hops back.

then you will have enough charge to do a ball/super/ultra.

hopefully I can figure out the timing for hop over, one hop back, down-back charge

Before any of this, you have to beat the game with Akuma first.
then--
--Set it to easiest
--First two matches: get a perfect (throw hadokens, they don't block)
--Next three matches: win with Ultras
--Rest of the matches, make sure to get hit once, don't get a perfect, don't use Supers or Ultras or Ex moves.

That should do it.

Yes be careful you do not get too many perfects/ultras, otherwise Gouken will come out before Akuma, and you won't unlock him when you beat him. That just happened to me and frustrated the hell out of me.

I've played like 45 matches, and like 40 were shotos, with 2 vegas 1 sagat and like 2 blankas.

I can't seem to beat any ken with Rose. I just beat a Gouken, and damn near killed an Akuma (all 3 rounds he had a silver of health left).

Just play defensive with Rose against online Kens.
If a Ken is doing a random fierce srk and miss:
- you can Soul Throw them in the air.
- throw them when they land.
- cr.mp/cr.mk -> Soul Spiral (-> Super, if you have the meter) when they land.

If you have an ultra ready just wait for them to jump at you or if you're at the right distance when they fireball or anything leaving them open, give them a Shamwow(ultra).

I've done that a few times and it actually works decently well since these people really suck. Couldn't get away with that on anyone who knows what they're doing though, some serious punishment would come.

I use Ken as a main in almost every fighting game that features him, even if he sucks in it (yes, even MvC2; noone can deny the awesome power of the hurricane kick glitch). I just like him as a character. This was before I saw the Daigo vid. Once I saw the Daigo vid, I creamed my pants.

Only thing I don't feel is that great in SFIV is the music. The remixes in the rival battles are great, but afaik, that's the only time they play.

I hate playing kens online, when they get lucky they take off too much damage, and yes they use fierce uppercut like its a jab or something, and shockingly it connects so damn often. Its really frustrating to play against a good Gief, especially since im pretty handy with gief and i usually lose to another good gief when im playing with fei long or ken, hes just so beastly.

like I dont play Blanka, but I kno enough about street fighter to get a 25 win streak online... the skills and experience should transfer over albeit at a slightly scrubby yet somewhat competent level.

the only reason I broke my streak was becoz I was trying to get the medal where you win by judgement,

but turtling on a 99 second timer... not a good idea.

So I made my own custom match and set it to 30 seconds, got my achievement!!!

I mean if he does it while you're waking and times it perfectly. He can put himself within range. I haven't fully tested it out, I mean desperately dashing backwards might be enough to get out of range fast enough. I only played as Abel once and it seemed really effective, but it's pure speculation without playing further.

I'm not entirely sure. I know you can perform a general move counter upon wakeup, which is sure to have invincibility frames, but that ultimately comes down to a guessing game... and can be very punished if guessed incorrectly (in the case of a blocked Shoryuken). I'm guessing something like an EX Spinning Bird Kick would be safe to perform and have priority. I'm just wondering if there's a universal tactic against it. Maybe it's something stupid, like mashing C.lp.

I'm planning to rotate Sagat and Viper for now. El Fuerte has been kind of difficult for me to wrap my head around so far--same with Abel. I could really do whatevers though. Blanka, Guile, Chun Li, Claw, Dictator...whoever. I'm really going to concentrate on playing through arcade mode to try and unlock everything first. Hopefully that gives me more time to practice.

I probably sound like a broken record, but focus cancel? I mean, it's a risk to do it, but you'll be gaining your Revenge Gauge at the same time with (hopefully) no permanent damage to your health bar. Whenever I see fireballs on screen, I automatically look at them as Revenge Meter powerups. Focus, backdash, focus, backdash.

true, but if they are relentless with the fireballs then you will never have time to recharge your life.

and if u sit there blocking trying to recharge, you will take chip damage from the fireballs.

focusing for meter is VERY risky, maybe not at this point where nobody is real good yet but down the line I dont think it would be a wise decision.

Yeah, with advanced level play I don't see it being entirely viable... or at least doing it constantly anyway. In the fireball trap you gave, you'll get chipped away, but if they don't attack more aggressively you'll never suffer any substantial damage... until he realizes to throw out an EX fireball.

Although at the same time I don't see someone spamming fireballs as particularly advanced either. If someone's spamming fireballs and doing nothing else, they probably don't know much more than that.

Just got done playing on the 360. Playing open arcade mode is definitely the way to go to get challengers easily. My BP is a little under 600, but I feel like I'm finally starting to get used to the timing a bit. And yeah, online is DEFINITELY Shoto City.

Another thing I would like to mention is the subtlety of the Sanwa JLF is really starting to grow on me. During my initial breaking in of my TE stick, at 1st I thought it was kinda janky, In actuality, I'm just used to throwing around Happ competitions and P360's for my whole damn life. Once I calmed down a little bit, and focused more on finesse and form over power and slapping, things started to flow beautifully. I finally get what the fuss about JPN joysticks are all about.

You guys and this thread have been very helpful to me thus far, I appreciate it.

i gotta learn my SF jargon.. lol

i did easy, 30 seconds 1 round

all i did was block his yoga arms then advance block his sonic boom then if he walked i swept him.

if he sucked me in with his stomach id block then if he was kicking low id mid kick, if he was kicking mid id sweep his legs,

then id back up let him do the diagnol jump from the right screen to the left and id high kick so hed fly back then id focus attack him and itd usually hit, after u focus attack sweep him when he falls..

took about 10-15 tries though

Hey guys, how do you negate Abel's grab when your character is waking up? An Abel player will knock me down, wait for me to get up, then immediately grab me again. Do I need to get up grabbing with LP+LK to get a tech to negate it?
If he's using the Tornado throw you can't do that since it's a command throw, but I think you can just crouch to avoid it?

Blanka's sliding punch does wonders against shotos, I dont kno about anybody else but Ken & Ryu's fireball recovery makes Blanka's slide rather safe. Regardless I use it all the time when I wanna kill someone.

you can dash cancel his standing forward kick, into a close crouching fierce... to do the dash cancel I would input towards + MK, towards. Guilty Gear style executions.

I figured out how to buffer that HK to EC thanks to shory and it is fucking awesome, I can see myself using that a lot. First move I've ever learned to do that on. Problem is the god damn challenge mode doesn't accept that.

EDIT: got it, again thanks to shory. For anyone else stuck on it, you hit HK, very quickly do the qcf x2 motion, and then hit punch AS SOON AS the kick connects. The buffer way is sooo much easier though.

If I'm not mistaken (and I might be), you can EX COD ---->FADC--->Cr.HP---->Falling Sky/Ultra.

You are right, j.mk does cross up. Also I know it's basic knowledge, but Abel's roll builds meter.yeay but if you do the EX version plus focus cancel, that's 75% of your combo meter... it's much smarter to focus cancel the regular COD.

it's not like Rufus who can only ultra off EX messiah kick (altho Rufus also has many other ways to land Ultra)

A wireless mic is a godsend when using an arcade stick, or any controller for that matter.

no, it's surprising becoz lots of ppl have been playing and getting good at HDR.

like I dont play Blanka, but I kno enough about street fighter to get a 25 win streak online... the skills and experience should transfer over albeit at a slightly scrubby yet somewhat competent level.

the only reason I broke my streak was becoz I was trying to get the medal where you win by judgement,

but turtling on a 99 second timer... not a good idea.

So I made my own custom match and set it to 30 seconds, got my achievement!!!

HDR is "old" in Xbox Live time. The first few weeks of HDR was freebie time for online achievements, now most of who is left put up a decent fight, though you get the occasional clueless guy. If you go on DoA:U, DoA4, SF:Anniversary, MK:Ultimate, SF2:Turbo, Tekken 5, or any older fighting game, you'll play people who know the game, but the first weeks of those games was mostly people who bought the game on a whim and hadn't played many fighters before.

Just saying, give it time for the cream to rise to the top and rack up the online achievements while its ripe for the picking.

Which I'll be doing tonight with my new HRAP!!! Yay!
