Does anyone really get a sense of accomplishment out of beating the single player mode in any fighting game anyway? I'd rather he be an overpowered mess than a pushover anyday. At least as an overpowered mess that bright orange flash after Ultra K.O.ing feels immensely more satisfying.

I still don't understand why everyone thinks Seth is so hard? The only character that took a few tries for me to beat him was Dhalsim and that was on Hardest. You can pretty much bait Seth in making huge mistakes the entire second round.

Bison in SFII was about the best example of a good end-boss as any. He was both tough and balanced, not overpowered. Fighting games are about balance, after all.;););)

btw, i heard vega was low tier but i keep losing to sf2 style hyobal (wall dive spam.) what's the quick solution to stop this, i'm too lazy to watch videos

I mean, I agree about the single player experience thing. Quest Mode is great... but Arcade Mode is not Quest Mode. A capable single player mode can be integrated into the game, but Arcade mode is generally not it.

And I must admit, I do love SNK bosses. Rising up against overwhelming odds and a godly character really does something for me. Bison wasn't a good boss in SF2T. He was easy. Way too easy. In Alpha, they at least gave him SUPER OMEGA INSANE PSYCHO CRUSHER with no startup time and full screen damage. And this sense of accomplishment really helps if the boss is cool.

That said, I don't think Seth looks cool. I think he looks goofy. So he kinda fails on that level.

So I just restarted instead of continuing and then the difficulty suddenly ramped back down and I beat everyone no problem. Weird.

Anyway, I unlocked Akuma, so just need to do Seth and Gouken.

I remember reading that there was some bug where the difficulty ramps up if you get interrupted or challenged during a fight under certain conditions. I don't know if that's accurate, and I think I just read it on a messageboard, so it's probably total crock.

Even after working it out he is still a pain. Chances are If you mess up even once he'll smack you around for a good 15-10 second before you can recover.

The only thing I've noticed so far is that Bison's Skull diver won't connect half the time even though his fist is passing right through the other character, it's kinda annoying, thinking it'll connect but doesn't. It usually works with devil reverse, but after a head stomp that's where the problem for me is.

kainzero, I was having success against Claw's wall dive by just jumping back and attacking. The dive crosses up pretty hardcore in this one, so it can be a pain. Also, you can simply walk forward in a lot of instances (especially when the do the roundhouse version). It takes some getting used to, but fortunately my boy plays Claw so I got like 20 matches of practice against it this weekend.

@SmallWind: It's crazy. The lower half of her foot will clip right through the opponent and not register it as a hit unless the heel of her foot makes contact. It's even worse for one of Zangief's moves, IIRC. They really need to tweak the hit boxes.

i've been having little success with sakura's j.mp, and it takes 3 of those to equal one of his dives.

I guess I've gotten lucky so far. Played about 250+ games on PSN so far and I haven't had anyone disconnect cause they were getting beat.

Ugh, after playing a couple of matches on PSN just now, I have to agree with kainzero about jump backs. I played this dude's janky Abel and all he did was jump back whenever he would get pressured, or jump back ----> Wheel Kick.

Took me a minute or so when I realized I'd just wait for him to get even more predictable before letting loose.

Halo ODST comes out in Aug./Sept. and it's just a new side mission with the regular Halo 3 multiplayer, except all the Halo 3 map packs are on the disc. There's also 3 new maps.

If you're wanting to get rid of Halo 3 do it now as I see it being traded in droves at Gamestop this summer.

I will have my PS3 hooked back up tonight if someone wants to play. If we do player matches I will use someone besides Ryu.

i got a ragequit yesterday. i lost to some guy twice then i played him again and when i was gonna win he quit. oh well.

i want to learn viper because i'm always a big fan of overly technical and complicated character but i have such a bad grasp of her normals and basics. but goddamn her combos into ultra are nice and do like 3/4 damage and doing things like c.hp - knuckle cancel - c.hp make me feel good inside. but then i lose against 100 bp akuma and lose like, 150 bp and i feel dumb again.

you can tell the good ryus from the bad ones if they do DP - FADC - Ultra. and the bad ones do full screen ultra that you can jump over on reaction.

i really hate how the opponent can cross you up 100% of the time if you're in the corner. some corner it is. also had a huge problem blocking gen's crossup. i don't know why.

This is what I've been wondering...how much longer you think before these "new jacks" move on to the next "flavor of the week"? I mean, KZ2 is out this week....Halo ODST can't be too far away. SF 4 (and fighting games in general) is like a fad right now for a lot of these cats...and I know SRK can't wait for them to be come distracted with something else.:lol:

I'm all for new players and I know not everyone wants to get tournament worthy. Thing is about SRK is that it was essentially built for high-level talk/conversation about various fighting games. There are a handful of people there who are very open to explain basic stuff to new members but most of the community there just doesn't care too much. Honestly, I sort of don't blame them.

Among their FADC, mix-up talk there is "I am having trouble with Charge Characters" or "Sagat is cheap he should be banned". Then again we have that talk here and we have a lot of really good players in this thread. I guess we are just a smidge more friendly?

I keep telling myself that everyone has to start somewhere to get better. Then I see random people I play against give up because they are getting stomped on. I see the same people that I am friends with give up because they don't want to practice, or they can't learn to get over a certain match-up. Many new players only getting good enough to beat their friends and then bragging about it. They set the line there.

Shit it's all fun, but it's disheartening to me and sort of what SRK doesn't want.

To add to what you have stated, I feel that this "segment" is also responsible for keeping quality arcade sticks out of the hands of those who would benefit from them the most, not those who might decide in 2 weeks that fighting games aren't for them and go back to RPG's full time, leaving a barely used HRAP EX or TE stick to gather dust next to the Wii Fit.

Not sayin the example above applies to everybody, but the shoe does fit on occasion. Granted, most hardcores have had themselves a stick already, especially on the PS2/PS3 side of the house. But for 360 owners, short of the typical rebranded Hori EX2's, have been stuck with AIAB or pricey customs. The moment 3 decent sticks hit the market (MC Fight/Tourney Sticks and HRAP EX), no one can get them for a decent price. And it all happened THE WEEK SF4 HIT.:bomb:

I'm all for new blood too...but Street Fighter, like most fighters, is like a religion. You can't just try Chrisitanity this week then jump back to Buddihsm the next.;)

SRK FGD has always been pretty dumb if you venture outside a specific game topic. I'm convinced that most people there like to talk about how they're really badass "tournament players" but I don't recognize most of their names.

The best part about SRK is the regional matchmaking. If you're serious about getting better you can find lots of good competition. Most of the people I've met IRL off of a fighting game forum are pretty nice as long as it looks like you took the time to sharpen skills that can be developed on your own. It ain't even about going to tournaments to prove yourself. Yeah, they're fun but they're not everything, I myself just like to get on the learning curve and improve but being top-flight is out of the question since I no longer want to put in the time to get really good at it.

With youtube you can go and watch how the metagame is already played out, and adjust and adapt accordingly, so unless you have very specific questions then you shouldn't ask them because you can find a lot on your own.

I'm actually gonna try and teach my brother how to play since he seems interested and the only other fighting game we've played is Smash, where we're about even but on the grand scale we're pretty low tier. So we'll see how that goes. I'm also interested in recording videos of me playing online, so I'm gonna go buy a tripod and annotate games on youtube. I have one of me losing really bad at SFHD. =D

Not that I'm defending SRK, but "worrying" about new blood isn't what it's about.

Elitist or not, everyone on SRK can agree without new blood there is no fighting game scene. My original FG crew I used to roll with fell apart years ago because everyone else stopped practicing frequently, stopped holding get together's and started flaking on each other.

But as the point maybe (as Knox and I mentioned), how many of these new blood fighters will push to get better to beat more than just their friends. Learning the lingo and impressing your friends is one thing, practicing when you don't want to, pushing yourself to get better to get tourney worthy, taking your losses on the chin and sticking with it is what gets you better.

I think the SRK community thinks that a lot of these "n00bs" are not going to be sticking around and we won't be seeing them outside of their rooms, so why bother they ask.

That is without saying there are a lot of people who are helpful on SRK. I have been maining Abel for about 3 months before the console release, and one of SoCal's BEST Abel players "BustaBust" is always open to answer questions about the in's and out's of the character. Hell, there are a lot of helpful/great players on SRK. Funny thing about that forum is that you do have to make sure you don't ask silly questions and don't come off "n00b"-ish.

You can't blame them though. The SRK community is built up of a lot of high level players and it connects a lot of strong scenes together so everyone can get better and crews can communicate.

Not to sound elitist, I'm always open to teach new players (and I have in the past), but sometimes I ask myself why bother when I don't see the players I teach stuff to apply it, get better, try things out on their own (we live in a "how do you this"/"tell me" age for fighters) and learn from experience.

Unfortunately I'm really not good at teaching stuff in video games. All I can really say is don't be predictable, but you already know that. With Dan, it's even harder to close in than usual :-(

Obviously the first suggestion I made when we played was to not just Blanka Ball for the hell of it. Someone like Abel can punish the hell out of that. Ultra from full screen blocked BB, sure!

Learn how Blanka can fully punish common mistakes and then learn how he can fully punish specific Character mistakes.

Just know your match-ups. I liked at times you used Elec sparingly against my Abel. Mostly to stop my Cross-Ups -----> Everything. I've played too many Blanka players that just mash out Elec for the hell of it, thinking that nothing can break it. Be careful with characters that have EX Armor like Abel. For example the times where I would EX Armor Rekka, absorb the first hit of Elec and then do my thing. With Abel I focus really on being patient, getting an opening or a knockdown. Once I have a knockdown and I have my opponent guessing what my options are when they are knocked down, the fun begins.

Definitely learn some simple BnB combos with Blanka. I'm sure JEKKI, kainzero, Smallwind, or Phrost can shed more light in playing Blanka. I know his Ultra is decent at best, if I'm not mistaken it might have the ability to cross-up or overhead. Anyone confirm?

I thought I was gonna get hit too, I was focus charging and then he threw out the Ultra and I was like oh shyt!!!

but then when the ultra hit me, it jus got absorbed by my EX armor and Dan began to roll forward as if the Ultra had been blocked or whiffed

so I released my focus and combo'd his ass to death.

Definitely learn some simple BnB combos with Blanka. I'm sure JEKKI, kainzero, Smallwind, or Phrost can shed more light in playing Blanka. I know his Ultra is decent at best, if I'm not mistaken it might have the ability to cross-up or overhead. Anyone confirm?


I'm still tryin to figure out BNB shyt with Blanka... all I kno is cr.MK->Ball... and I cant even do it on a jump in or crossover coz I dont get enough charge... there has to be better (and easy!) combos out there.

also, Blanka's Ultra is a fukkyn instant-win button. seriously, it's so dumb.

what makes it worse is that it will continue to be until ppl learn how to block it!! and as long as ppl DO NOT learn how to block it, I will continue to reinforce a real bad habit.

so yah, to block Blanka's Ultra, block low first since it hits low, then when it bounces block high as it's an overhead, finally as it's rolling it hits mid so block as you wish

i played ryu or ken on sf2turbo like 10 years ago.

what i learned...

1) be patient!!!
2) dont just attack for the hell of it
3) i hate ultras

yeah the blanka ultra can cross over if u time it right, but i havent been practicing my excecution really just playing matches

My Blanka is not patient at all. I don't think Blanka is made to be played defensively. You need to keep the pressure on at all times, since his combos kind of suck. Ultra will cross-up in super-close range and will be an overhead in kinda-close range. Abuse the slide whenever you see an opening, such as a projectile (I know this doesn't help much with Abel). Remember, the electricity isn't that strong.. you can be thrown out of it. Also.. you may not know this but the backstep roll is a cross up even if you're far away. You can also knock peoples out of srk and flash kick if you time it right. This is an important move in a Blanka players arsenal. Use and abuse it.

In short, don't be predictable. Blanka is all about mind games and constantly switching up your style. He has a lot of disadvantages against a lot of players but if you keep the pressure on the match will be over before you can AWWWURRRYYOOOOOOOO. :D

i don't know what a bad bison is because it seems like everything he does is safe and outprioritizes sakura. they say two hit scissors is unsafe but i did reversal sho-oh-ken and it was blocked. same with his slide. so i don't know.

I played a very good Bison at the SF tournament last week. Apparently he's a mod at the regional forums at SRK. Bison is a very bad matchup for Blanka. So far, he's the worst I've seen. :(

So I finally got my copy of SFIV on Monday and it was very anti-climactic. I really like the game but it seemed like everyone was light years ahead of me even just after a week.

I also got a copy of Battle Fantasia and I'm very pleased with the game. Everything is super smooth.

In fact, I won my share! Fun-ass games that day, including the heart-stopping Shinryuken vs. Double Cyclone moment.

He's just saying he doesn't like that they seemingly chose costumes over making a complete online matchmaking system like in SSFIIHD.

The difference between creating some extra costumes and the online UI/matchmaking system, though, are pretty disparate.

My feeling is, Capcom felt it needed to release the game during this time frame and dickering around trying to perfect the online UI when everything else apparently worked fine was a financial mistake. I think as long as Capcom follows through with the alleged patches, we are good to go and I have no problem waiting for it. The game is still fun (to me) at least.

I don't have any issue with the DLC because it's optional, and for me, I could really (to borrow Cheapy's own vernacular) give two shits about unlocking some barbie fashion shit. Now, if the only way to unlock the characters was DLC, then I'd be pissed off, but then that would be really stupid and I doubt as many people would buy the game.

Yeah GG. Your Chun was definitely better. I got a little dizzy from all the jumping. I pretty much know nothing about playing Viper. Shes fun but I don't know if I could main her. I didn't even use Sakura, who is my main right now, in those game. The whole time I used Cammy I kept trying to Hooligan, but hardly ever got it. The motion sucks X_X. I know what you mean with my EX moves. I use them a lot by accident. I think the FS3 is a little too small for me, but that should hopefully be remedied, to an extent, soon.

I'm not on Cheapy's side in regards to the DLC issue. My only complaint is that they are slightly expensive. It should be each pack for 250 or 800 for all of them. Sure, they're on the disc... but no one's forcing you to buy them. They don't help you at all, they're just decoration.

Picked SF4 up today, damn am i horrible. Started using Abel and finished career mode. Took me a dozen or more tries to beat Balrog and Sagat, like 5 to beat Seth. (on Normal). Then went online and only got 1 win out of probably 25 matches. Abel vs. Blanka & Shotos is no fun.


Having some issues with my fightpad now as well, my character will get stuck crouching for a bit. Also kind of hard to to his fireball motion move and not get the dragon punch anti-air throw out of it.

i played some guy on my friends list, and we had some great matches, we played around 12 or so matches and i won 9 of them, and a lot of them were close. After that point, he kept using a fucus RIGHT when i jumped and when i landed i only had time to get one hit in, and he would get me EVERY SINGLE TIME with a connecting ultra. 4 games in a row like this and i just quit due to frustration. I got so mad that i kept falling for it i couldnt think on how to combat it and just kept falling into it more. My main problem is im using the 360 pad and neither weak punch or weak kick are mapped to the controller at all, and that hurts my chances of stopping focus attacks heavily. Ugh.
