Actually played a good Rog tonight, amongst the 20,000 Ken's and Ryu's. Though Akuma seems to be a popular choice nowadays because of that ridiculous Ultra/Raging Demon on opponent Wake-Up.

I kept trying to close in by lariating through the fireballs, but he'd just time a sweep and then go back to air fireballing. And it's hard to rely on the Green Hand since it is very awkward to time against the angled hadokens.

Anyway, when I'm not fighting Akuma, I'm LOVING the EX powerbomb. I don't think people have really caught onto its properties yet, so it catches them off guard. It's awesome to just no-sell a hadoken and get right in the guy's face.

"There's been a ton of confusion circling about exactly how to unlock Akuma and Gouken (post updated--I failed to paste in the most obvious part for Akuma that everyone already knows--this is tricky yo!)


While figuring this out can be a bit of a drag, part of me actually likes it--it's a lot like the old arcade days when we were first trying to figure out how to get Akuma in SSF2T, or even Reptile in MK ("I heard from this dude that you have to throw the rock on Chun Li's stage at Ryu", etc.)


Judging by all the Akuma's I've been battling online, plenty of people are getting there without our help, and lots of credible, well-meaning sites have it partially correct (or have posted overly-difficult methods) but the time for confusion is over, so here are the full details on how to unlock them:





To unlock Akuma as a playable character:


1. Unlock Cammy, Fei Long, Dan, Sakura, Rose, and Gen.


2. Pick a character you have already used to beat Arcade Mode.


3. Win all your matches without continuing and without losing any rounds before fighting with Seth.


4. You need to get at least one "perfect" win in a round, and more than one depending on how many rounds per match you are playing.


- 1 round match: 1 perfect round or more

- 3 round match: 2 perfect rounds or more

- 5 round match: 3 perfect rounds or more

- 7 round match: 4 perfect rounds or more


(including the last battle against Seth)


5. If you meet these conditions, Akuma will appear. Defeat him to unlock Akuma as a selectable character.


To unlock Gouken as a playable character:

1. Complete Arcade Mode playing as Akuma and watch (not necessary to watch everything) an ending.

2. Then, unlock Gouken as an opponent, and defeat him.

Necessary conditions to unlock Gouken as an opponent:

- Play with any characters with which you watched the ending once (so play using a character you have already beaten the game with)

- Do not continue at all.

- Do not lose at all. Not even one round (easier if you only play 1-round matches)

- Achieve certain number (or more) of "Perfect" rounds. The number of Perfect Win you need to achieve are:

If you play on

- 1 round match: 1 time or more

- 3 round match: 2 times or more

- 5 round match: 3 times or more

- 7 round match: 4 times or more


- Achieve a certain number (or more) of Super Combo -OR- Ultra Combo Finishes. Super and Ultra finishes both count toward this number. The number of super/ultra finishes you need to achieve are:


If you play on

- 1 round match: 3 times or more

- 3 round match: 5 times or more

- 5 round match: 7 times or more

- 7 round match: 9 times or more


- Achieve certain number (or more) of First Attack (this means you must score the first strike in a match--the screen gives you the "First Attack" message, and you can mostly do this without even noticing):

For those who don't know what it contains, here's a blurb from HG101 (http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/kof/kof3.htm):
All of the King of Fighters games from 1995 to 2001 were re-released through the Orochi and NESTS package, with one conspicuous omissions - none of them featured KoF 98. SNK realized that this was a fan favorite, and went the extra mile to create an "ultimate" version of the game. This is King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match, which was released in the arcades in 2008 for the Taito Type-X board, and shortly ported to the Playstation 2.

The sprites are the same as the Neo Geo release - unfortunately SNK did not redraw any high resolution sprites like they did for KoF 94 Rebout. Still, they've been smoothed out and look better than the previous ports. There is a choice between the original 2D backgrounds and 3D backgrounds, which are better looking versions of the stages from the Dreamcast port. There are plenty of new stages too, and some from previous games. The interface has been redone and looks quite a bit fancier, plus it loads faster and plays nicer than the DC port too. There's an option for both the original and arrange soundtracks, with a small handful of new songs, such as a remixed version of the opening song to accompany the new intro (which is done in the style of the arcade games and is not an animated movie like in KoF 98 or KoF 94 Rebout.)

SNK went the extra mile to include every single character from every KoF game prior to 98, adding previously excluded characters like Eiji, Kasumi, Geese, Mr. Big, Wolfgang, Goenitz and Orochi. All of the other characters have additional moves, including alternate versions of the most popular characters. In addition to the standard "Extra" and "Advanced" modes, there's also an "Ultimate" mode, which lets you pick and choose various skills from either mode. There's also a brand new Challenge mode. Overall, it does feel a little bit thing that SNK issued this as a standlone release when they also published anthologies filled with three games for the same price. Still, it's hard to argue that it's most polished version of KoF 98 out there, and is a must have for old school KoF fans.

SNKP is 0/4 so far with their releases. Just a warning for everyone. I'm going to wait to see what the word out on the street is with this release before picking it up. Mainly from those who owned the JPN version and played it to death.

There really is no exact problem, it's just to practice with people so I can better handle the ones online and be prepared for most things they can pull out. One problem is not pulling off some moves right after wake up to get out of cross ups :/

Man, I was on for the last 4 1/2 hours and not a peep! None of you were playing the PS3 version during that timeframe?

Had a coupla rage quits and some really good matches as well. Broke 2000 BP today with my record standing at:

87 wins
27 losses
114 total

I only managed to unlock Dan. Was trying to unlock Fei Long, but I kept getting challenged. Finally I told my self I'd quit if a) I beat Seth or b) I cleared 2000 BP. So, another time for Fei Long!

Another thing I really happy about is that I've finally fully adjusted to square gate Japanese controls after a lifetime of playing on Happ sticks/buttons. That and I've also gotten used to playing with the stick on my lap, as I have always been table dependent. Once I convinced myself that tables won't always be available, I made it my mission to get used to it.

All in all pretty productive SF day!:D

You're complaining about "spam," yet that splash is an extremely important part of Fuerte's game. He has to use it and abuse it every chance he gets for either damage or mixup opportunities. Just because you can't adjust to it doesn't mean he's a "spammer." If you keep getting hit by it, why change what's working?

It probably took a lot of practice getting the timing right for those crossup splashes. Hell, I gave up on it after practicing a while. Luckily, Vega's backflips can dodge it...most of the time. :lol:

It feels much more like an extra hard attack with certain conditions than anything really gimmicky like it would seem.

Jin's does the freeze stuff, Ragnas is the drain attacks etc.

Im wondering now if GG:XX AC Plus is it then for GG. Which would really suck, but this looks so much like GG I guess I could be okay with that. The one thing that kinda bugs me is the " cool buttion " he was talking. I have played a few fighters that had that and it just felt tacky to me. Though the set condition to use a finishing move does sound interesting.the "cool" button is your drive.

what it is is a unique action each character has.

for example, with Litchi it equips/unequips her weapon, for Carl is allows him to control his doll, for Rachel is allows her to control the wind, etc. etc.

it's becoz each character has a unique playstyle that the game does a great job at making each character feel like you are not playing the same game.

certain dash punches have armor break properties. i think b, df+k has it, and maybe b, f+[p].

you can combo his super and ultra in from headbutt. use kicks, and hold them down so that you get the juggling uppercut.

combo after ex dash punches is demoed in trial with EX uppercut into c.lk.

Do setups for the overhead punch too, or the crouching one. If you set up those and they hit its like a free pressure game.

Rog's headbutt is retarded, just do that on wakeup 90% of the time and youll have an ultra!

Definitely annoying. Great thing about Abel is once you get a knockdown, the avalanche starts. Too fun to main Abel. At times my brain went dead because I was thinking too hard to mix things up.

Also sorry I didn't respond to your invite originally. Trying to finish up the last couple episodes of Dexter: Season 3 and I didn't see it.

I haven't played SFIV at SJSU now that the console release is out, but I can't remember any Abel players around there either. If I remember right there might be maybe 1 or 2 legit Abel players in NorCal, but I'm not sure if anyone mains him exclusively.

Yea, it's sort of funny how many options Abel has to pressure/cross-up/mix-up in the corner as opposed to everywhere else. Funny thing is you can actually link his regular Super off a meaty cr.FP in the corner.

The trouble I always throw in my head is actually getting the knockdown. As I said before once I get a knockdown, it's pretty much an avalanche from there if I can keep my head on straight. A lot of times I have to be careful against Shotos, as you can't play as aggressive with them as Abel's other matchups. Thing is I go back and forth between being patient and overtly aggressive depending on the player/situation. I find that I mix up the two sometimes.

There are still a lot of things I have to learn with Abel though. I still haven't practiced Rekka FADC into Cr.FP or constant MK Dash Cancel.

I need to FA more with Vega. I was playing these stupid fun Vega dittos last night, and my opponent was so much faster than I was! Plus, he would wreck me with FAs most of the rounds. I won most of the matches, probably because I was a bit more patient than he was, and I made less mistakes. Still, it made me realize that I don't FA much, if at all with Vega, and he has some good options after a crumple (not a lot, but what he does have are good).

Lag is always a problem with just about any fighter, but I guess I'm just starting to notice it more after playing more people here in person.

It's getting to be a huge problem for me since I start to get impatient. Throw the delay on top of it and I'm not going to be hitting anything. I start playing like an idiot. I played a Dhalsim tonight that I just could not kick lariat through his fierce to move up on him. I got stubborn with the kick lariat and just kept running into his slow flames and far fierces. No way I should have lost to him.
