Better than Cali, I used to live there, a lot of bad history in that state. Mainly the fact I lived in the butthole of it. I'd rather live in "Suckramento" than Yermo.

You guys think BlazBlue will be hard to learn? I was never into Guilty Gear.it's easy to learn, hard to master.

it's all chain combos like MVC games, so you can run up and be all like weak->mid->hard->special move.

it only gets harder as your combos become more complex along with the execution, which is kinda the whole point of this game and Guilty Gear as far as offensive play goes.

practice those EX Focus Cancels in SFIV lol, those short frame window button/dash inputs will help.

so there was a sf4 tourney held at the best buy in downey, CA today. I took it all the way with my honda. there were about 90 some compeitors that showed up for it.

the names were picked from random and i was actually in the first match. lol.

there were like 6 or 7 decent fighters in the whole lot: 2 blankas, one claw, a boxer, a ken and a sagat

all in all i think i played about 8 or 9 matches. I met some cool guys that said they want to start a fighting game clique or something so i gave him my number. it's always more fun playing actual people than online matches.

so i won a $75 best buy gift card. I don't know what i should spend it on.

I love fighting bad akuma, ryu, ken, and sagat players.

Chun has so many good options to fuck those guys over when they're abusing their high power moves.

Is anyone else using Chun very much? I really like her SF4 version. Maybe even better than ST?

I hear she kicks butt in 3S but I never got into that game at the time.

eastx
03-08-2009, 04:41 AM
I don't like how Chun Li has no proper anti-air move besides the EX spinning bird kick, and her jumping priority isn't as high as it should be. She's still lots of fun to play though.

jer7583
03-08-2009, 04:50 AM
Chun Li has lots of anti-air moves, they're just extremely situational. And learning those situations and what to use in them is part of her depth. She doesn't have a catch all dragon punch-alike, but she can counter almost any jump-in with the right knowledge about the game.

A lot of her jump ins are not as reactionary either and require you to see what's coming very quickly, or predict based on knowing your oppponent.

Some would say it's a weakness, but I like the depth of it and her other strengths balance it out.

JEKKI

what?!?!?!

check it out, here's my player data on xbox:

http://i42.tinypic.com/jh3tjl.jpg

905 BP, 431 matches.

The contest is this...

if I continue to EXCLUSIVELY play Chun-Li in ranked matches, how long do you think it will take for me to reach 0 BP assuming I continue to suck awfully with her lol.

please note, if I'm playing a player match with somebody I will still use other characters. The wins and losses will not count towards my BP, but they will count towards my total match count.

so yeay... PM me what you think my match count will be the moment I hit 0 BP.

the person who guesses closest without going over wins!!

but if I never hit 0 BP, then technically I win since it means I can play a good Chun!!!

the winner will receive one of these:

Dude, she doesn't even have a proper non-special move anti-air attack. Her old, good Roundhouse kicks have been relegated to combo-only status.

From http://mycheats.1up.com/view/section/3163881/25963/street_fighter_4/xbox_360:

Chun-Li does not have the absolute best anti-airs in the game but when she has EX meter her EX Spinning Bird Kick is her best bet. It will beat most jump in attacks when timed correctly.

Her crouching Hard Kick is also a good attack to knock them out of the air, especially when the opponent tries to jump over her Light Punch Kikoken. Walk back slightly and execute a crouching Hard Kick when they jump at you and it will beat most attacks with ease.

And the official strategy guide (which I know has many problems) agrees that EX spinning bird kick is about it.

I don't enjoy that she has been nerfed, but yes, she is still fun to play.

jer7583
03-08-2009, 05:54 AM
again, like I said, things like jumping LK, jumping HK, Jumping double HP, her kikouken, back and LP, close RH, medium punch, ducking MP, and many others can act as Anti Airs, in the right situation.

EX SBK will stop most all jump ins, yes, but it's also situational. When you have EX meter and want to burn it.

Also check out here for more info on her AA options.

I booted someone from my lobby who only had 1 bar of latency, and I get a message from him asking me if I was scared. I told him he had 1 bar, and he tells me that there's not much of a lag issue unless there's 0 bars (which is true). Personally though, my experiences with < 2 bars in ranked have been less than happy, especially with a charge character.

Oh yeah, before I forget! Hey option, you should use EX Headstomp against any Vegas you come across, or just use it in general. It does so much damage, and the invincibility helps out on wakeup, and against Vega.

on the ListenUp podcast someone asked if 2009 was the year of fighters; he's like "yeay SF4, SamSho anthology, new KOF and 'BlueBlaz'"

and the response was like "what about last year? We had Soul Calibur IV, Smash Bros, and MK v DC, how is 2009 any different? Plus, BlazBlue is a real bad name"

and then they said "yeay and I doubt Tekken 6 will do any good, it aint no street fighter. I was way back into Tekken 3 before but it hasnt been the same since then. Tekken Tag came out and it was a horrible game! It was such a cash in"

and the whole time I'm like lol

I have a sad time thinking the general public has the same feelings >_<

I may not like Tekken, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's gonna be fuckin' huge.

They're definitely underestimating Tekken, I'm in the same position as you. It may not be as big as SFIV's launch but it'll definitely be bigger than KoFXII or BlazBlue and then some. It's a well known fighter, I could mention its name to any of my friends and they'd say how awesome Tekken (3 specifically) was. I hope they do what they did with T5 and give it an arcade stick bundle. That'd be nice...

So gaiyz.. I went up to the UMBC game room today and it was early, before all the dudes with sticks came up.. so I was playing on a pad, which is good I guess cuz I think Round 3 will be on pads. Anyway, I was taking turns playing random and beating scrubs. I beat this one dude using one hand with Zangief.. all I did was spam 360 and LB hahahha. It's the only game I've ever played where the controls feel like butter to me. it feels like an extension of my body. Plus I'm a nut about power based fighting and Tekken has a huge emphasis on it. Also, love characters that are badass and the entire series puts emphasis on badass.

I always wanted to learn to use Kuma when I played Tekken briefly. It didn't pan out well.

I did as well, but ever since T4 came out with his bear stance I got lost, but liked him more. I've always had Jack as a secondary main though. He's always been my character to fall back on if I'm having trouble kicking ass... he seems to always save me.

on that note Jack6 is insanely fast compared to his old days...

I'd be lying if I said I don't get upset when I loose too much, but I don't quit matches, that's a puss move. I get worse the more upset I get. So if I find myself getting too angry I politely just stop playing for a while.

Eveytime I get someone that quits I simply send them a message with a little smiley face. It seems to tick em' off even more--> :) It's kinda like saying, "I don't mind if you just quit, but I still won." I get lots of hate messages after I send those.

Haha yeah. I'm just really annoyed right now because I beat some dude fairly easily twice, but he was like 800 BP below me so I only got like 25 or something each time. Then he played me yet again (I just kept on creating matches) and I decided that since I handled him easily with Sagat, I'd try Gouken who I am not very good with but wouldn't mind getting better with. It seems pretty safe, he jumps in hard kick, low medium kick cancel into fireball and I cant reach him and he's far enough away to block a move.

Block and pile drive him right away.

I gave Zangief a spin in SF4, and it seems like nothing I have can beat Ryu's hard jump kick. I tried all 6 standing moves+ 6 aerials + Lariat. His kick murders all of it D:

lariat him. You just have to time it right.

nah, incorrect

if they do j.hk - c.mk - fireball with combo-like timing, you can't 360 them in the middle.

if they're slow on the c.mk then yeah you can.

the one thing i'm really confused about is using an FA for AA. sometimes it hits, sometimes it doesn't? can it be jabbed out of on a blocked roundhouse or something?

lol, now in HD remix I keep trying to throw with LP+LK. Been playing too much IV!

Man I got dominated by this guy last night in a player room who used Ken every time. It bugs me how powerful the dragon punch is... I know I just gotta adjust my play style and be more patient and defensive, but it just seems like the Dragon Punch is the "right answer" in TOO many situations, know what I mean?

At least he wasn't a jumpkick/sweep scrub and could actually use the dragon punch effectively... but it bugs me (in any fighting game) when I use a different character in every match, and the other guy ALWAYS uses the same guy. I know I could just switch rooms but I was getting more and more motivated to try and beat the guy. :-P

Well, so far I only have experience with charge characters. But in SF4, can't you mash out special moves? (i.e. do the SPD motion while being hit, or SRK repeatedly) If they are doing a combo, of course you can't grab after the jump in heavy kick since you'll remain in block stun. But if they don't link a combo, the special can come out. I personally hate this aspect of the game (i really hate anything where mashing buttons comes into play).

I guess a good way to go against the jump in heavy kick, you can anticipate and catch them in the air before they release the attack. Then hopefully the other person will have to guess whether or not to release their kick earlier in the air or later. If they release to early you can punish them when they land. If they release too late, you can anticipate and catch em in the air before they release their attack.

Sure it becomes a guessing game, but at least the opponent doesn't always know you'll just be taking the jump in heavy on the ground.

And I believe gief can use his lariat as anti air, especially when used late (when the opponent is right next to you).

Mr. Beef
03-11-2009, 02:55 PM
I suppose if you have meter to burn, you can block the jump kick, and turn it into an EX Powerbomb, that way the armor would suck up the low medium. That's if you have meter to use, though.

Almost done with the normal time trials. I think it was #18, but whichever number it was, it was a fucking liar. It said that I had unlimited SC, but apparently I don't, and instead, I can't block. So I figure, "well if I can't block, I might as well use someone with nice damage." And for some reason, Zangief popped into my head, so I decided to use him for the first time. Didn't do too badly, and I realized he's actually pretty fun. I ain't gonna use him as a new main (or even a third), but for friendlies or something, it's nice to know I can just use him for giggles.

The DP is the wrong answer in too many situations.

In SF2 you can get away with spamming a Ken jab DP because it has decent range and it was only vulnerable on the top of his head, and you don't have to worry about any huge ground combos because there aren't any. And the recovery was great. Usually you had to worry about people with powerful throw games and then you can easily tone yourself down once people get in the habit of throwing.

In SF4, the range is reduced, the recovery extended, and strong ground combos make it hard to DP spam. What does make it more effective is the easy input and the reversal timing window. You can literally df, df+P almost any time in the middle of a link combo and if they mess up they'll eat a DP (which isn't as bad as eating a 360, also insanely easy).

So here's what you do and do not do.
1: Don't jump when you can be DPed.
-Feel free to jump over fireballs but DON'T jump in a free situation. Well this is applicable to every character since you should be anti-aired all the time on a free jump.
2: Don't do any low reward or high risk link combos.
-Rapid fire jabs and shorts do piss poor damage so don't do them unless you're going for a tick throw. If you can't hit a link 90% of the time don't do it, and make sure you remember that you're playing online. I will not do Sak's c.lp - c.mk link online but I will offline.
3: Use your instinct to determine when he's gonna DP
-I can usually tell when someone's going to attempt DPing. For example, if I anti-air Ken and walk right next to him, will he DP? You should be able to figure out based on your opponent's play style and it shouldn't take long. You can also use this intuition in any sort of situation, like wake ups, after he blocks a poke, after you block a poke or a sweep, etc.
How do you figure this out? A lot of people have a rhythm and a skill level. You put the two together. You can even figure out when people have learned and exploit them on that.
4: Punish the DP with everything you've got
-If you want to tell them not to do it, you better be able to punish it. I play Sakura so I get C.HP - EX Tatsu - (reset option, Ultra, DP+K). I don't know who you play so I can't tell you but make sure you do a ton of damage EVERY TIME they deserve to be punished. Learn whatever it is you need to learn, where it's something simple like Viper's C.MK - MP knuckle or her C.FP - EX Seismo - HJC MK kick.

but I ain't crazy about the DP's in SFIV either, so I will certainly take your advice to heart when I'm playing that!
I play Ken in HD, so here's what stops me from throwing out random DPs.

1: Play with an irregular rhythm
A lot of people fall into the trap of poking whenever they can. I use that to determine when to DP. For example, a lot of Bisons will do C.MK until they get out of range, and then Scissors Kick (if they're somewhat good) or Psycho Crusher (if they're not) as soon as they can, so I DP that. A Guile walking behind a Sonic Boom will do something as soon as they're in range. Vary your rhythm so that you don't play into that and get into the habit of the shuffle where you walk back and forth repeatedly.
For that matter, try to bait wakeup DPs. DPs on block have very good recovery so you need to make it whiff completely, it is not uncommon to follow up blocked DP with another DP because it's safe on block. I generally do that because I don't wanna get thrown.

2: Don't jump unless you can crossup
Same SF4 advice applies, even more so in HD. Free jumps are death.

3: Throw ANY whiffed DPs
I tend to stop DP spam and start carefully using it once they start throwing every whiff. I especially become more careful if they have a good throw (like a 360, a multi-hit like blanka bite, or chun).

4: Some of it is just a mind game that you have to overcome.
Walk up DP is a technique I employ, but it's really tough execusion wise and mentally. I also use DPs to force a 50-50 with my tickthrow attempts. Reversal DP against a 360 tick is the only option to avoid getting thrown, which is why you vary how many jabs you do before a 360.

5: Ken's jab / fierce DP and all of Ryu's DPs are vulnerable at the head
What does this mean? It means that if you hit with an attack where the hit is on top of his head, you'll trade. It's how I remind myself to use strong DP against Ryu because his deep jump roundhouse trades with jab DP. You can try and exploit this to your advantage.

Hey guys, I love the podcast and I thought I'd use this opportunity to ask a question.

I grew up in a strict Mexican household and as such there were a lot of expectations placed upon me. Growing up and living up to those expectations was very tough but when I entered college I used my new found freedom to assert my independence and figure out what I wanted for myself. During this time I discovered Street Fighter and I instantly fell in love with the franchise and I got heavily into playing. However I am now done with college and I am back home while I'm looking for work. I've been secretly playing street fighter but I suspect my father is getting suspicious of my activities. How do I tell my strict Mexican father that I do not want to play King of Fighters like he did but would rather play Street Fighter games? I fear that telling him might crush him and I will be kicked out of the house and disowned. Please give me some advice on how to handle the situation. Thank you and keep up the good work.

and the followup.

thanks for answering my question. I took Sanchez's advice and I sat my dad down and told him the truth. I was firm and stood my ground. I told him we're not in Mexico and I shouldn't have to play King of Fighters and I should be free to choose which fighting game franchises I want to play and free to control the joystick with my left hand if I so desired. He got very angry and said he raised me better than that and he wouldn't stand to have a Street Fighter player living under his roof. I told him I can't help it if I like Street Fighter, I was born that way and he is going to have to learn to accept it. My mother interrupted to calm my father down and she sat him back in his chair.

We both sat there silently and after about 10 minutes my father asked me if I was sure I really liked Street Fighter and I said that I indeed did and that would never change. He then said that he knows that I'm an adult now and I was bound to make a few choices on my own and even though he doesn't understand my decision that he will try to tolerate it. I told him that's all that I wanted and following Pherai's advice I asked him if he wanted to try CvS2. He said he would be willing and so we played for about 20 minutes when he said that the game is really boring and I replied that yeah I really hated that boring ass game too and we both had a good laugh from that. So it was a little rocky at first but I think we're going to be ok. Thanks again for the help guys!

This is HEROIC. Not because it's so funny, but because it's also very plausable. I know many Mexicans who play KOF using the right hand for the joystick and left hand for the buttons. Even more amusing is the strict KOF thing because that's really all they have in Mexico as it is THE fighting game there. One thing I do notice is that Mexican players tend to gravitate towards grapplers so I always face some fierce Mexican Zangiefs if they do indeed play SF.

I'm using Fei and Dan...

 I'm not coordinated enough ATM to block the other way... I proably bulldog too much. I realize that since I hold back now more than I use to and seem to get alot more wins.

SFIV is less about bulldogging and more about landing good hits at the right time.

I probably bulldog because I bulldog with some characters in Tekken mid match for mind games.

I haven't really played any Balrogs so I had no idea he could absorb one hit with his EX moves.

EX Armor is silly and amazing at the same time.

I'm curious about the US version. I know first hand that the Japanese version is sweet. Might just stick to that if the US version has the usual SNKPUSA bullshit going on.

After reading what a handful of people have said about the U.S release, seems like it's close to the JPN version and a good port.

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=142067&page=118 (impressions are on the last handful of pages)

Xeroma SRK mentions (as others did) the only differences they have noticed is different buttons presses for palette swap and no blood. No mentions of any gameplay issues.

Might do a quick stop by Gamestop in an hour and pick this up before work tonight.

Guess, I'll be picking up my copy tomorrow, that is if they're not all sold out ;)

I'm interested to see some of these new moves and intros. I hear Orochi Shermie & Brian have a funny one togther.

No blood effects? May I ask why? Oh well, at least there's no actual gameplay issues.

I think there's only a few characters who draw blood. Choi, Iori and Mature come to mind.
