I had some thoughts about SFIV to post here, but I made it into a CAG blog instead.
It's about how Capcom implied that SFIV would be the game to bring CASUAL players back to fighting games... and how that was a DAMN LIE!!!!!

Good blog post, but here're my qualm with the arguments.

You're operating from the standpoint that Street Fighter IV was supposedly simplified to appeal to the masses. I disagree. Street Fighter IV was supposed to be an easy and intuitive gateway back into the fighting game genre. And this was accomplished by appealing to various levels of play.

The focus attack deceptively complex, as you suggest, and the parry is deceptively simple in concept, but you're forgetting that the ease of execution of these on a technical level leans towards SF4. The timing is more forgiving and the risk is not as severe.

This is not to say that Focus Attacks can't be used in a manner that is time sensitive and risky (just watching any Poongko video can squash that theory), but the point is that people can still use Focus Attacks on a very basic level. Parries cannot be used on a very basic level at all.

EX moves make sense and were never complex. You press one button, it does the normal move. Pressing two will do a more powerful one. It's logical, and most beginners are able to understand that. EX moves weren't an issue in SF3... it was using them well and in the right situations, which remains an issue in SF4.

The EX cancel doesn't have to be used (and is really more a part of advanced Focus Attack usage anyways).

The Revenge Meter is a nice touch. It's really the beginner's super meter, able to change the tide of a battle is a single move and they don't have to do anything except get beat up in order to earn it. More advanced players will focus cancel to get Rage and be able to combo into Ultras, but for the most part the Ultras can't be comboed directly into (except after a level 2+ Focus Attack)... and Capcom did this on purpose, so that you would have to bide your time and wait for your opponent to make a mistake, not just whip out a move and win the game.

SF4 affirms that old mantra of "easy to pick up, but hard to master." It's learning curve is steep, but can still be enjoyed without learning anything at all. Everyone can enjoy SF4 on their own level, and THAT's what separates it from the many other fighters (where it becomes button mashing vs. expert juggles).

The game simplified things in the sense that ONE move changes the entire gameplay mechanic. The Focus Attack is a single powerful move, armor properties, induces stun, a form of parry, a combo cancel, a bait move, and a mind game all in one. It's very flexible and complex for advanced level play, but seems simple at first glance- exactly like SF4.

SF4 was definitely going for easier. More forgiving inputs, making them register easier, and the easier to use focus attack. Capcom was going for something that was less demanding on a technical level, and opened up the players to formulating strategies. SF3 was very demanding on both a technical and strategic level, and that's where they lost their peripheral fans (that and no one liked SF3 characters).

I think Capcom was going for a blend. Capturing a new generation with less daunting timing/precision, while maintaining the interest of hardcore fighters through complexity/versatility. Those easier inputs will work wonders when your buddy tries out the game for the first time. Sometimes it's hard to remember that many gamers don't automatically have the muscle memory in their hands fireball=down to forward+punch.;)

As Balrog (Boxer), I beat Zangief, Akuma, and Ken. Didn't lose a single match -- this bodes will for the tournament I'll be entering tomorrow. Practicing in such situations, even if online, helps w/ my psychological preparation and calming down.

yes, I kno Zangief's lariat hits low only on startup, and Fei Long's chicken kick was nerfed to remove his infinite.

both of these were confirmed by Mr. Wizard, and apparently there are other undiscovered tweaks at the moment.

I would assume the gray area of your life bar counts when you get a time over.

the reason being, I have used focus armor and beaten enemies with grey health on my bar, yet still managed to receive a perfect for the round.

championship mode seems way too laggy now compared to before. I'm missing simple AA attacks like boxer's cr. hp.

it's great 'cuz the competition's tougher, but when i can't do simple combos due to lag spikes... it gets really frustrating after awhile.

G2 matches are tough. I've only managed to make it to the finals once, but won! Unfortunately SFIV online decided to be mean and say the match didn't conclude properly even though I managed to upload the replay.

i'm not good at timing my headbutts.

i really needed the boxer mirror matches. I face more boxers now through championship mode than before. I didn't actually know how to handle him. heck, I still feel like my boxer sucks. I couldn't follow up my headbutts to ultra at all against you.

edit: your boxers' decent, you combo the overhead rush with a sweep. i think you should change that up to a cr. lk -> headbutt -> ultra. try it out in training mode whenever you get the chance.

ex dashes are a good anti air from a distance...

try messin with boxer's ex upper semi infinite. sure, it's great fun and purely situational, but it can be useful in dizzying your opponent....

I dunno. The ESRB rating was a good while ago. I know Broly rolls over at GoNintendo a lot, and I remember seeing it there. Might be fun to cross reference the two, but even if you did and saw one before the other, it's not like it would really prove anything substantial or interesting.

H'ah well. I'm honestly not that much of an MvC2 fan, for two reasons: 1) because I never learned how to play it so I get my ass handed to me, and 2) playing it on the DC after playing SF4/3rd Strike made it looks extremely primitive in a bad way, so I never bothered. (Yes I'm not much of a fighting game fanatic.)

But I'm sure I'll pick it up on XBLA because of the slew of cheap points from a few weeks ago + playing it online with people.

Not that I doubted ReRo on this, but it's really satisfying to see the MvC2 thing get "officially" acknowledged. I'm actually more excited about just fucking around in local multiplayer then I am about playing online, since I never attempted high-level play with this game - nevertheless, let's hope the online options lean more toward HD Remix and less toward SFIV!

Mostly because the only reason I'd be buying the new version is for the online upgrade.

I don't care for playing a game like Marvel with massive amounts of lag. I'm perfectly fine with my offline DC version at the moment. I don't like lag period, but certain FG games with lag or the idea of lag just drive me insane. For example when I once tried to play CVS2 on a PS3, it drove me crazy. All the A-Groove CC's I hit with my eyes closed I would miss when running on a PS3.

SFHD was a completely overhaul, which is why I decided to drop the funds on it. I still have my CCC Vol. 2 for standard ST.

Can't wait for all the Ryu/Ken/Akuma teams online and all the ragequitting after getting ROM'ed and Snapped Out.

I don't like lag period, but certain FG games with lag or the idea of lag just drive me insane. For example when I once tried to play CVS2 on a PS3, it drove me crazy. All the A-Groove CC's I hit with my eyes closed I would miss when running on a PS3.

SFHD was a completely overhaul, which is why I decided to drop the funds on it. I still have my CCC Vol. 2 for standard ST.

Can't wait for all the Ryu/Ken/Akuma teams online and all the ragequitting after getting ROM'ed and Snapped Out.

from the looks of it, it's using an improved version of the Tekken DR PSP game engine, thus no online but support only for the ghost download.

I don't mind since I use the portable version more as practice for me to fine tune myself. I'm just curious how they're going to pull off the new character customization stuff...

As much as I love the DS, it fails as a fighting system. Jump: Superstars, Bleach:TBOF and DBZ:Supersonic Warriors just aren't enough. If I ever buy a PSP, it will be for the fighting games.

A) I don't want to play MVC2 online with any sort of lag. The game is too execution heavy (like CVS2) to even be enjoyable for me with lag.

B) Like I mentioned in my previous post, this isn't a full upgrade like how SFHD was. SFHD was more than just a visual upgrade, which MVC2 DL might be.

C) I don't care enough to play MVC2 online when I have my crew/hommies to play with. Other than the slight visual upgrade, I have a feeling the online portion of MVC2 will be the only new addition to the game. Don't care to buy the game again just to play online.

D) Obviously the game is a nice way for Xbox and PS2 owners who didn't want to shell out high dollar amounts for inferior ports (to the DC version) to get an affordable version of MVC2 without having to get a DC or pull out a DC anytime they want to play. I'll admit convenience is nice, but I just don't care too much about getting everything on just one system.
