2 quick questions:
1. Anyone know if TvC on the Wii will support GCN pads when it comes out?

2. If so, what is a good (preferably cheap) GCN to PS2 converter? I've seen a handful, but don't know if lag or other issues may come up. I can't imagine playing with the crap ass Wii/GCN dpad, and even the VC controller would be a pain.

Game supposedly comes out Dec. 15th in Japan, so I'll be importing, and want to make sure I got a good pad to play it with (sorry, can't use stick to save my life. Me am ashamed)

Actually, I have what I assume is an older version (def. Saitek) and for the money, it's not bad. D-pad is serviceable, but don't expect perfection. 6 face buttons is always nice though, especially for fighters. Great for emulators, not that you would ever do such a thing... Still, you can get a cheap adapter for a PS2 controller (or directly plug in a PS3 controller if you have one) and that seems to work the best for me, even without 6 face buttons

I really can't figure out how to get better at the game other than blocking strings and getting the parrys and parry combos down, which I'm learning. I'm having a rough time with it.

$20 for SF2HD is a kick in the nuts. I *kinda* have the money but I'd really rather not ever spend $20 for a download-only game. The situation is made worse because I've never gotten a good deal on PSN money. When shit is overpriced on 360 or Wii I can at least rest easy knowing that I've almost never paid full price for sexbox points or Wii moneys.

Getting the game on XBLA isn't really an option. My 360 is broken and I don't have anything to play it with other than the basic pad.

Yeah, it does have invincibility frames (the headbutt). I more or less play 'Rog exactly like the guy in the first video, just not as well. I'm not great at implementing the Hold PPP / KKK dash punch, and my combos are weak. Basically, I think I just need to practice practice practice, because I only started taking Super Turbo for real 2 days ago.

I think in general, you just want to be either far away enough that you can jump in without getting dragon punched or close enough where you can anticipate another fireball and jump in while they're still in recovery. I know, easier said than done.

With Boxer, you have to be patient. If you can start the match with a standing fierce to tag them and then dash in with a short rush punch, then do everything you can to stay in their face. If you're in the fireball trap learn to buffalo headbutt through fireballs and short rush punch to close space until you can get in close range. In addition to helping you close space, you'll be building meter with these two moves. Once you have meter they can't freely throw fireballs at you anymore, and if they do, teach them not to with a well-timed super. At further ranges you can still just jump over the fireballs, but once you're in dragon punch range you're going to want to be able to tag them with a rush punch or use a buffalo headbutt to either tag them or get you in range to where you can start pitbulling them.

With Dictator, just never get caught in the corner without meter. If you do, you won't get out of a well-executed fireball trap. Dictator has a really long jump and a really fast walk speed, so jumping isn't that good of an option at a lot of ranges but walking is. If you can get the timing down, you can walk forward and then jump straight up to close space. Another option at midrange to anticipate the fireball and headstomp and mixup the both the side and followup with landing so you can be pretty close. If you're close enough and they try to shoot a fireball, you can stuff it with a standing roundhouse or standing forward.

It's probably pretty basic stuff that you already know, and it's harder in execution. I hope it helps you out some, though.

so a couple things,

you can select your button layout at the beginning of a round! (DABC or ABCD)

during certain hitstuns, throws in particular, a ! sign appears on you which I assume signifies the window of reversal opportunity

the super bar is divided in 4 sections, I dont kno why since it seems like most actions (supers and roman cancels) take half the bar

burst take 50 points off the guard meter, I dont kno what else you need that meter for but it increases every time you hit the opponent or get hit.

You can tech recover in knockdown. I noticed this in one of the videos on aksys website, but in their podcast they said it's becoz the game tries to move away from an okizeme style of play (which sux coz my entire Axl game revolves around knockdown -_-)

The Drive button is a character specific attack or attribute. I'll speculate my observations below

Character specific observations:

Ragna - there's sum kinda absorption animation in his playstyle... not sure if that is an aesthetic or if it's his actual gameplay. I'm thinking his drive attack is when his sword becomes shadow/fire like? Other than that, he seems rather standard.

Jin - same... pretty standard. Assuming his drive lets him attack with Ice sword??

Carl - He uses a puppet, so I assume his drive controls his puppet's attacks. His puppet does not move at all unless you command it to do an attack, however he does have a move that teleports the puppet close to him. In aksys podcast they said you can do a setup where your opponent is in between Carl and the puppet and you attack from both sides.

Rachel Alucard - Aksys podcast said her drive controls the weather. You can see in the video that she can control the wind to change her momentum with both jumps and attacks. She can also lay lightning rods and ignite those.

Litchi - Her weapon is the staff and her drive places her staff in a stationary position away from her body. This is similar to Bridgette and the yoyo, except with Litchi her standard attacks change whether or not she is in possession of her weapon.

Taokaka - nothing to say... she got her ass kicked pretty bad so I cant see anything special about her

Baang Shisigami - He does a move where he places an emblem on the playfield... I assume it's his drive but I have no idea what it does...

So is Blazblue just basically another GG game with higher resolution?

I tried getting into GGX2 a while a ago, but it proved too complex for me to enjoy. I'm sure they're great games, but all these Aksys games are starting to look like more of the same except for different skins. I tried to pick up Baiken and only got up to her basic loop combos. I really would get a headache whenever I tried to think about the whole Roman Cancel system and the multitude of other intricacies.

I think a big reason why certain fighting games do better than others is the control difficulty. Look at games like Smash Brawl (fighter or not) or Street Fighter 2 (plus its bajillion iterations) compared to the Aksys games. Not knocking Smash and SF2 as shallow games, but it seems like it's easier to find people more inclined to play them simply because they are a little simpler than other fighters where knowing the system like the back of one's hand isn't required to do something cool or basically have fun.

By this reasoning, I'm definitely for games with fewer buttons . Heck, if I can do crazy stuff with the push of one button, I'm in (though I'm sure it'll get old).

I dunno, anyone here think playing GG or other Aksys games too daunting? I hope I'm not alone in this sentiment.

Guilty Gear (and it's revisions) are probably the best made/thought induced fighting game revisions out there. They have a lot of changes between games. There is a reason why it is one of the highest grossing arcade game in Japan still.

And my no means am I insinuating that ST is shallow. It's just that, in GG, it takes a while before you can even properly interpret what you're seeing on the screen.

There certainly is a place for games with the GG learning curve, I'm just saying it's not for everyone!

IMO, the only real complex part of GG is its approach to frame data.

for one, the game has a mechanic that lets u decrease blockstun,

next, when attacks hit they have properties that say like "on counter this move will cause X frames of Y type of stagger" which of course opens the window for your character to capitalize on and do a combo.

BUT! Tekken does the exact same thing so it's really not too difficult.

as far as Roman Cancel system goes, Street Fighter 4 does a VERY similar thing with Focus Cancel so if you couldnt figure out roman cancel, get ready to go thru a similar frustration when learning SF4. Garou had a similar False Roman Cancel system also as certain moves could be cancelled and followed up with supers or combo extensions. I also thin Tatsucap's Baroque system is similar also.

Now, the thing that makes GG good is its balance and its uniqueness of characters. You can look at the whole game system and mechanics when in reality you really do not need to know like a large handful of that. When you play GG you play your character, you learn your character and when the game has a system mechanic that your character can take advantage of then you implement that into your playstyle.

for example, I use Axl and I dont care about Impossible Dust becoz I cant set up jack shyt with it and also coz my standard dust combo does good damage. I also dont need to use Jump Install except for those one-time situations when you want to do something that your opponent is not expecting, and if you play the game enough you'll already know how to do it.

in a game like 3S, you can succeed with Twelve or Sean, but you cant play them as a unique Twelve or Sean... you have to play them in a way that takes advantage of the same 3rd Strike system that each character is also taking advantage of. In GG, your strength is solely determined on how you play your character.

Also anyone downloading the UMK3 demo out of curiosity should note that fighting the CPU is worthless. Like, moreso than any other fighting game. Either you memorize the patterns and follow them to the letter (very effective but very boring) or you just get mercilessly destroyed (annoying). Multiplayer really is the only way to go because the AI is terrible!

and yeay, False roman cancels have like a 2-4 frame window, but regular roman cancels can be done whenever you want for most moves. FRC is used mostly for rushdowns, or for very specific combos. The first character I learned in GG was Anji and I never used any of his FRC in my gameplay so all my combos were regular roman cancels, but once I switched to Axl I had to get used to FRC (which back in XX was a 1-frame window X_X)

so nobody has really spoken about what most people in the fighter thread will be getting... 360 or PS3? I'm leaving it to the majority to decide which platform I get it, but only FGT regulars.

Huh? I think everyone for the most part has chimed in on what version they are getting. It's just gotten lost between all the posts/pages.

Already mentioned twice I was in for the PSN version, even though originally I was going to skip the release all together.

I dont think I'm talking about the Feint cancel... take Hotaru for example, I can do qcb+k and input like 2 buttons (forget what they were) and she'll go back into a neutral state instead of going into recovery animation.
You must be referring to braking. Every character has at least one, i.e. rock has a brake for his 360 throw. But those are usually for one move, and it's not that complicated. On the PS2 version, all you have to do is press one button if you want. Again, these aren't frame critical.

Man, I've been playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper (Alpha 3 port for GBA) on my micro while at work and it's such a great port. Looks good, has the full 30+ character roster and plays incredibly well.

I'd consider modding it, but I'd rather put the cash towards the SFIV stick instead. Besides, the last time I took apart a controller it took me a whole afternoon to put it back together.:lol:

You can do a few mods on the ex2/fs3 that are pretty cheap and help alot.

I did this bat top and oct gate mod (yeah yeah square blah blah!) and it cost under 10 dollars with shipping included for the parts.

You can change the buttons pretty easily too I think, but the stick is the biggest problem with modding (although I think one of the seimitsu sticks fits init or something)

Well, I won't be able to noogie trap you anymore, so that'll force me to play more keep away Sim, but then again, Claw can't keep doing wall dives after a knockdown either. It should be a different experience with rebalanced mode.

You think Upper is good? Give Double Upper a try... a.k.a. Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX here in the States. It's only out on PSP (wtf?) if there's ever a game that needed either a direct conversion to XBL or the HD treatment, it's that game...

Yeah I have MAX for PSP, but I hardly carry my PSP around with me. And when I'm playing a Street Fighter at home, it's 3S.

The Hori next gen sticks aren't that bad. They're perfectly playable and you get what you pay for. Now the Mayflash, that's seriously bad, only good for modding. If I had one complaint about the Hori EX2 or Fighting Stick 3, it would be the staggering of the buttons, it promotes my wrists to be angled outward, which isn't exactly comfortable in my opinion. I'd prefer the buttons to be straight up and down or staggered the opposite direction.

anyway, I went to the arcade today!!

I was sitting outside eating a burrito and these korean kids were like "hey are u 21? can you buy us sum alcohol" and I'm like freakin koreans and their underage drunks...

I also got sum wins on Guilty Gear, but I lost to Johnny who for sum reason is always a real tough matchup for me and I cant figure out why... so instead of putting another quarter in I went and walked away and started talking to sum guy... then this other guy comes out of nowhere and is like "yeay! I beat that guy!" and the guy I was talking to was like "you mean this guy? He was the one using Axl" and I'm like lol.

I also tried to play SF4, but when I played I was totally playing Guilty Gear instead... I was trying to long range poke and do charge moves with Ryu until I realized oh shyt I needa throw fireballs wtf am I doing?!?!

o yeay! and BlazBlue! it's awesome!! I'll post my impressions in the thread on GAF if u wanna see what I thought and how it felt to me, but I'll definitely be going back soon for more!

Yes, it would be better. Infinitely. You don't have the appeal of an arcade cab, but it's prolly more fun to be a fuckin' bum and lay on the couch and just like spaz out playing games for 8 hours straight. Or something. And the hardware you'd get would almost unquestionably be better.

3600 shipped usually. And yea, the key thing missing though is arcade experience. You can't really get that from the couch. I know it sounds odd. But there is something about sitting down in front of an arcade machine and playing on a panel that doesn't move that makes a game feel 'better'...

Either way. If I got a Vewlix VS, I'd put that shit in the center of my dining room.

I like side by side. But I'd need a lot bigger of a cabinet for that... I have two arcade cabinets now, an American dedicated Tekken 2 cabinet (TTT inside), and its comfortable when 2 ppl are playing next to each other.

But on smaller/sit down arcade cabs like the Japanese candy cabs, I would really kill for the VS setup. Back to back is awesome. That's the standard for Japanese arcades... You'll see back to back more often than side by side over there and in other asian countries.

I just got a promotion and big pay increase. But I'm not hurtin that bad for the Vewlix VS yet.

Maybe when SF4 and Tekken 6 come out.

It just seems every thread is dripping with negativity lately. It must be the stress from the economy or something. I stopped going into the vs forums because it just turns into an edick contest. The SFII Remix is just a flash game or it's too expensive. The Wii sucks. The 360 sucks. The PS3 sucks. Everything sucks lately.

The vs forum was always like that. I'm psyched for SFHD but bummed because I can't buy it using Gamestop credit. I like my Wii and my PS3. I'm pissed that my 360 finally red ringed. I'm stressed out because reentering the Marine Corps after I get my bachelor's is turning into a huge headache.

The game boy micro is great, uses the same screen that the top of the DS uses. Very crisp, clean and nice detail despite its small size. Fantastic D-pad as well, the only negative thing i can say about the system is the shoulder buttons take a little getting used to.

I think it's America's collective ADD. Everything has to be awesome or it's boring in five minutes. Maybe we should make every American have dial-up access until the age of 18. That'll teach a little bit of patience. If that doesn't work, I'll break out the card catalog and the microfiche.

Alot of people don't even bother posting anymore because all they'll get in return is BS. Go out of your way to post something that may or may not be a deal? Not only do you get treated like a moron but people come out of the woodwork to tell you that the item is garbage anyway.
