Yeah, I'll be there for family. I just happen to be in Tokyo while it's going on so I figured why not go. It's actually fairly cheap to get in. Only $12 and I can buy my pass at a 7-11.
I was curious if any other CAG will be there so maybe we can do a little meet-up.

I want the Happ style with circular/octogonal gate and the man buttons that take a beating and keep on asking for more. But It's been so long since I truly dived into an arcade stick. I tried using a Sanwa and I sucked ass. If I did get a custom happ how long should I reasonably be able to use it?
Uhh... does anyone here know the easiest method to unlock all the unlockable characters for SF4 on the 360?
Because this might be important since one of the methods got patched out...

Halo tournaments are a breeze to run. And on a Sunday when everyone's leaving? That's easy peasy.

I have one for sale, works wonderfully, green comp. stick and 6 green buttons with the other 2 plugged. it's wired for a PS1 PCB so it's compatible with just about everything through converters.

I can admit the game is fun with friends, but it is NOT a fighting game. The best shoryuken post was when a smash player played someone playing SF2 HDR and the smasher said "Which button does the specials?" THAT is why fighting game fans hate Smash fans. That and they can't do anything more complicated then forward + button.

And Markman, the smash community for the most part sucks. There's good people in it, but the disproportionate amount of bad ones make it not worth anything. Or at least anything resembling true fun. I can respect Power Stone since they're not claiming to be super deep, but Smash bros players say it with a straight face even. I honestly believe that Smash Bros players are trying to take the Troll crowns from Tonobou Itagaki and Ed Boon.

I think Smash IS deep though, i mean when it gets to that level, it can get just as crazy as any other fighting game. Especially with the reflex/skill/zoning you need to compete against someone that is THAT much better than you.

If you allow anything then yes there is a good amount of strategy. BUT if you go by Tourney rules the game is a neutered. YOU CAN'T ZONE! YOU MUST ENGAGE! What was once strategy, is now cheap.

It also is funny because they can't play Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters, or any fighting game that requires precision. Smash Brothers requires too many modifications to the default rules to be run in a tournament setting. It also does not have arcade roots like (I think), every other widely played, competitive fighting game. Those two elements knock it out of contention as a serious fighting game.
It's a fun, silly game to smash up your friends in when you just need to kill some time. It is not worthy to stand toe to toe as a fighting game with the likes of Street Fighter, KOF, Virtua Fighter, etc.

Fact: Smash Bros requires skill to play (just like every other fighter.)
Fact: There are Smash players in the world that could also kick your ass in SF4.

I haven't taken Smash seriously since like 2002, but I really do enjoy the game. I haven't played Brawl in like a year either, but I am interested in that modded version that has Roy in it, as well as balance patches.

Well I know both me and Mark have experience running tourneys or even just having casuals.
It is a huuuuuuuuuuge bitch running them. You will receive complaints like no other. Set rules one way, complaints. Set them another way, complaints. And they will demand EVERYTHING from you, they will suck your soul dry.
"$5 entry with $2 venue fee? That $2 is a ripoff! We're hosting our own tournament at someone's house."
"Only 4 setups? WTF WE WANT MORE"
"I can't use my Wiimote? WHY NOT"
"They're playing 2v2 casuals and they're not letting me play! Make them switch it to FFA!"
"They're playing FFA and I want to play 1v1!"
"There's approximately 3 frames of lag!"Seriously, the complaints against Smash are against the noisy and whiny community more than the actual game.
Also, the fact that it uses specialized equipment makes it really annoying. No other fighting game requires CRTs (because there's no 720p output, there's gonna be lag on an HDTV). No other fighting game plays on the Wii, and TvC doesn't count for now because the scene is small and because it's imported. You need to stock GC controllers which are no longer manufactured, not Wiimotes, not Nunchucks, not Joysticks.
Then you need to manually adjust and check the rules all the time. All the other games were fire and forget, I only had one issue when someone changed characters in SF4, but it was too late to do anything because he didn't bring it up when it happened. You have to account for double blind selection, stage counterpicking, keep track of who selects characters first. And sure it doesn't sound like a lot but when you have 1 or 2 people trying to run 4 setups and not all of them are aware of the rules (both Staff and entrants), it's quite difficult. It's made that much worse with the complaining, and it's really obvious when I hosted the tournaments.

Naw, I won the first match of the tournament, which is why I had to go up against him.
The guy running the bracket was like, that's what you get for winning first!
Man, nobody in that tournament got any practice before it started because the morning brackets from BB and KOF were running late and the people playing SFIV casuals wouldn't get off so we could practice. It definately ended up hurting me in the matches, because I missed like 8 AHVB's with cable, on top of a bunch of dashes and punishes with mag. You tell Row wasn't the best either since he messed up some stuff with mag and sent too.
I did alot better than I expected though, and played much better than I did at EVO.
I love it when KOF noobs complain about how someone fights. Look at this gem of a message from someone who used a lame Kyo, Joe, and Robert. I used Chin, Daimon and Terry.

You play KoF online? Impressive, did the new patch come out yet? I don't mean the first one that was 700MB, I'm talking about the supposed second one.
I play it online? I play the damn thing almost every day for hours at a time! The online works fine if you do the distance based method. I play people from California only and I can have a room of 4-5 people with minimal to no lag if their settings are done properly. It's mainly with friends, but the game still kicks ass. Every once in a while, you get a noob who joins and ruins the game. I just leave the room and make another and reinvite everyone and make it so the room is invite only.

I'd order it now, but I found out this morning that some jerk got my credit card number and tried using it on the Apple Online Store. Lots of calls to my bank, Apple Online Security, canceled cards, Fraud Claims, and swearing later, I'm sort of crippled until my new card shows up or I get a temporary one before my trip to Seattle next Thursday.

Ah, somebody else who uses Chin. While he's not my best character he's definetly my favorite to use. He's just fun. And it's funny that you mention Kyo, Joe & Robert, that seems to be the universal noob team. But the lag on 360 is still pretty bad. I always setup a 2 people maximum room to avoid this.

Robert is scrubby when most people use him, the Mexicans that I play with combo like hell with Robert. This was just a white guy spamming the Flame kicks. I wish it didn't go back so much after use so I could punish it far more easily.
And I like Chin and his new combo system, but I wish that he still used his jug as an attack as that gave him a more mid screen attack to poke and annoy with. I wish he still had his flame DM too. But otherwise, I enjoy the new Chin very much. Kinda wish he still had that move from 98 where he lied on the ground and just moved around annoying everyone.

In all honesty, I don't like Goro's changes. His grabs no longer have that instant grab where they grabbed you almost instantly. Also in the past when you knocked someone down, you could grab them from the ground and toss them again . They nixed that and that's in poor judgement. Grapplers are pretty neutered in this game.
And yes Chin surprises. People who use Chin either do it as a joke, or do it to scare the living shit out of people. Those are my two reactions to Chin. They're either joking, or incredibly good with the man.

Everyone got nerfed? Robert hasn't been this good in years. Ryo's rushing game is more brutal then ever, Kensou got one hell of a huge buff and Chin is more random then ever when played properly. Ralf is far more quicker and incredibly damaging. The only characters that got huge nerfs were Clark. Goro got some nerfing but is still good. His earlier iterations were better. Kyo's iteration and Joe's iterations are in fine form this game.

There's no denying a lot of the characters seem underdeveloped when compared to previous iterations of themselves. Robert is missing his comand moves which gave him some crazy combos. And it's pretty weak that most all characters (except 6) have only 1 DM.

I dunno. After playing KOF XII a good amount, I'd say that it's better then 02. 02 feels stiff in comparison or just that the button inputs have to be 100% precise otherwise they don't come out. Plus it just feels like it moves slower and the jumps aren't as useful after seeing the radius of how jumps are in XII.

I liked 02' for the sheer amount of moves & characters. Plus all the crazy SDMs that were added. Still 98' will always be my fav. Also really liked 99' mainly cause it had an awesome soundtrack.
Gameplay-wise I have no complaints with XII. The core fighting system is well done. The series needs some work but at least they got the most important part right.
i still pref 01 compared to 02.

Zangief is easier to pick up then Abel is, or at least that's been my experience. Gief's 360s are easy to do in SFIV, so don't worry about doing it too slowly.

The only advice I can give for grapplers (Abel is one of my mains) is learn the character inside and out. Gief and Abel play completely different and have their own Strengths/Weaknesses.
Abel's cross-up is great as well as his Mix-Ups, granted you can vary them a little. He builds up meter pretty fast with Marseilles Roll, but in certain Match-Ups, he'll need to burn it pretty quickly. There are also characters that shut down Abel's cross-up completely. Vary your Mix-Ups, score a knockdown and Abel can run like an avalanche.
Having the Marseilles Roll gives Abel good mobility (EX can get you out of tight spots), but if you use it too frequently you'll have players baiting it and counter with a throw/Mix-Up. EX Rekka has EX Armor so used wisely can help out.
I can go on and on about Abel's Strengths/Weaknesses, but again the grapplers play differently so I would learn basic pokes, normals and then move up from there to Combos, FADC Mix-Ups, etc etc...

Building meter/mobility is huge with the Marseilles Roll. Also on knockdown, you can use it to confuse your opponent on wake-up (if your mixup game is down) on which way to block and what to block specifically.
I can't remember the last time AxC used Abel's roll against me, since I kept punishing it. :)

here's how I learned Abel:
-mixup = j.mk
-learn basic combos with c.hp (c.hp -> ultra; c.hp xx lk roll -> fp sky)
-learn to use command throw (set up with f+mk, on wakeup, or to punish)
-block strings (really easy, actually)
-learn how to use f+mk (best post (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=7169477&postcount=4) i've seen on abel subforum on srk)
-FADC the CoD into c.hp -> ultra or whatever c.hp combo
-c.hp mindgames (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=191730)
once you keep practicing, you'll get a sense of how Abel plays. personally, the way I like to learn is by watching matchup videos.

Thanks guys I actually got the resets down pat, for Abel. Now I think I just need char specific strats. ATM, I'm just stumped when it comes to playing Sagat. He can zone like a mofo with his fbs and one hit tks. I honestly can't get in other than the occasional roll shenanigans. If someone could share some input either playing Sagat or as Sagat, that would be much appreciated. Also against Gief would be nice.
I also got to work on my meter management. I've noticed there were tons of times I could've used to build meter, and tons of times I burn it in one go when normal specials would have sufficed.
Also tried Zangief and liked him at first, but once I started playing Akumas and decent Ryu's, it was just an uphill battle. Jump back FTL. I think I'll try to take on Chun-li as she is more rushdown oriented it seems. Abel's pressure game is what I seem to take an affinity to, so it seems I would like Chun-li. Well, time to start mashing cr.lk as that's what all the Chuns seem to do....

I'm dead serious on this. If there is lag, it's very minimal. The people who haven't gotten the patch you can tell them from a mile away "Why didn't SNK force everyone off to download it?" But this patch is the real deal and I have been getting some smooth as shit fights with even RED connections. That NEVER Happened in the past. GOLF CLAP for SNKP. Though the real test is now testing this with people overseas. I'm trying some Japanese games right now.

You probably did if you can recall my PSN name . I played a lot of SFIV yesterday...like 3-4 hours straight so I was pretty tired and stop looking at who I was playing unfortunately. I do remember playing a few Honda's. GG though cause it's always cool to randomly run into a CAG. If you want to play some matches someday just let me know!

Half an hour would be plenty: just ask her about herself, tell her about myself, and - what I'd really like to do - explain to her the complexities of fate that have led to our passing each other on a side street in Harajuku on a beautiful April morning in 1981. This was something sure to be crammed full of warm secrets, like an antique clock build when peace filled the world.
After talking, we'd have lunch somewhere, maybe see a Woody Allen movie, stop by a hotel bar for cocktails. With any kind of luck, we might end up in bed.
Potentiality knocks on the door of my heart.
Now the distance between us has narrowed to fifteen yards.
How can I approach her? What should I say?
"Good morning, miss. Do you think you could spare half an hour for a little conversation?"
Ridiculous. I'd sound like an insurance salesman.
"Pardon me, but would you happen to know if there is an all-night cleaners in the neighborhood?"
No, this is just as ridiculous. I'm not carrying any laundry, for one thing. Who's going to buy a line like that?
Maybe the simple truth would do. "Good morning. You are the 100% perfect girl for me."
No, she wouldn't believe it. Or even if she did, she might not want to talk to me. Sorry, she could say, I might be the 100% perfect girl for you, but you're not the 100% boy for me. It could happen. And if I found myself in that situation, I'd probably go to pieces. I'd never recover from the shock. I'm thirty-two, and that's what growing older is all about.
We pass in front of a flower shop. A small, warm air mass touches my skin. The asphalt is damp, and I catch the scent of roses. I can't bring myself to speak to her. She wears a white sweater, and in her right hand she holds a crisp white envelope lacking only a stamp. So: She's written somebody a letter, maybe spent the whole night writing, to judge from the sleepy look in her eyes. The envelope could contain every secret she's ever had.
I take a few more strides and turn: She's lost in the crowd.
Now, of course, I know exactly what I should have said to her. It would have been a long speech, though, far too long for me to have delivered it properly. The ideas I come up with are never very practical.
Oh, well. It would have started "Once upon a time" and ended "A sad story, don't you think?"
Once upon a time, there lived a boy and a girl. The boy was eighteen and the girl sixteen. He was not unusually handsome, and she was not especially beautiful. They were just an ordinary lonely boy and an ordinary lonely girl, like all the others. But they believed with their whole hearts that somewhere in the world there lived the 100% perfect boy and the 100% perfect girl for them. Yes, they believed in a miracle. And that miracle actually happened.
One day the two came upon each other on the corner of a street.
"This is amazing," he said. "I've been looking for you all my life. You may not believe this, but you're the 100% perfect girl for me."
"And you," she said to him, "are the 100% perfect boy for me, exactly as I'd pictured you in every detail. It's like a dream."
They sat on a park bench, held hands, and told each other their stories hour after hour. They were not lonely anymore. They had found and been found by their 100% perfect other. What a wonderful thing it is to find and be found by your 100% perfect other. It's a miracle, a cosmic miracle.
As they sat and talked, however, a tiny, tiny sliver of doubt took root in their hearts: Was it really all right for one's dreams to come true so easily?
And so, when there came a momentary lull in their conversation, the boy said to the girl, "Let's test ourselves - just once. If we really are each other's 100% perfect lovers, then sometime, somewhere, we will meet again without fail. And when that happens, and we know that we are the 100% perfect ones, we'll marry then and there. What do you think?"
"Yes," she said, "that is exactly what we should do."
And so they parted, she to the east, and he to the west.
The test they had agreed upon, however, was utterly unnecessary. They should never have undertaken it, because they really and truly were each other's 100% perfect lovers, and it was a miracle that they had ever met. But it was impossible for them to know this, young as they were. The cold, indifferent waves of fate proceeded to toss them unmercifully.
One winter, both the boy and the girl came down with the season's terrible inluenza, and after drifting for weeks between life and death they lost all memory of their earlier years. When they awoke, their heads were as empty as the young D. H. Lawrence's piggy bank.
They were two bright, determined young people, however, and through their unremitting efforts they were able to acquire once again the knowledge and feeling that qualified them to return as full-fledged members of society. Heaven be praised, they became truly upstanding citizens who knew how to transfer from one subway line to another, who were fully capable of sending a special-delivery letter at the post office. Indeed, they even experienced love again, sometimes as much as 75% or even 85% love.
Time passed with shocking swiftness, and soon the boy was thirty-two, the girl thirty.
One beautiful April morning, in search of a cup of coffee to start the day, the boy was walking from west to east, while the girl, intending to send a special-delivery letter, was walking from east to west, but along the same narrow street in the Harajuku neighborhood of Tokyo. They passed each other in the very center of the street. The faintest gleam of their lost memories glimmered for the briefest moment in their hearts. Each felt a rumbling in their chest. And they knew:

But the glow of their memories was far too weak, and their thoughts no longer had the clarity of fouteen years earlier. Without a word, they passed each other, disappearing into the crowd. Forever.

You probably did if you can recall my PSN name . I played a lot of SFIV yesterday...like 3-4 hours straight so I was pretty tired and stop looking at who I was playing unfortunately. I do remember playing a few Honda's. GG though cause it's always cool to randomly run into a CAG. If you want to play some matches someday just let me know!
Edit: Half the time I was fooling around with Seth cause it's kinda fun, but yeah Ryu is my main.

on iplaywinner podcast they talk about mexican SF players and how they seem to have a style of their own and randomly peace out real good players at tournaments.
I was at FFA on a random weeknite like 2 weeks ago to play sum games, and these doods are playing SFIV so Im like aiite.
I beat sum dood but then this Ryu player came and kicked my ass. Im like ok whatever get back in line,
but then every time I play him I can never beat him! he didnt even seem that good, his play style isnt like Valle or Choi or Daigo standar Ryu, jus play random, but his reaction timing was INSANE!
everytime I jumped no matter how hard I tried to do it on a good window I got hit by shoryu on reaction, get hit by random shoryus all day.
anyways, Im only bringing this up becoz distfx wanted a story, and other ppl were talking about playing Suko on SF4.
My point is I have deduced that Suko is mexican, freakin random ass Ryu X_X
