I used to play a good amount of MAME.. I got so proficient at keyboard that it became my weapon of choice. I could pull of half circles no problem, even full circles sometimes. But I use the arrow keys and not WASD... I use ASDZXC to punch/kick though.

Oh yeah, was never that big into 3S but I got pretty good at SFA2 on keyboard. I used to use Kawaks a lot.

Yeah I forgot you kids use GGPO now... that's definitely the way to go as far as fighters go.. it surpassed Kawaks/Nebula a long time ago.

Yeah, I don't really get it. Technically, arcade sticks are used for more than just fighting games, albeit a smaller number of gametypes, but enough to warrant its own thread. And that thread had details about getting deals of sticks, modding, new releases, sticks for right games, compatibility.

The fighting game thread is just talking about upcoming and present fighting game releases, strategies, news. I think it's worth having two threads.

I'm going to have about $140 available to spend. I'm mostly looking to get a PS2 stick, so I can use it will all my PS2 fighters, and I'd be able to buy a total control plus 3 so I can use it on my DC fighters as well. I'm most likely going to mod it (put custom artwork and new buttons and stick), so I'm looking for a pretty durable stick. Any tips/suggestions?

Do you think I could save some money by shipping out my existing X-arcade stick and having someone convert the innards into something that was 360-compatible? I can't speak about modability, but the Street fighter 15th Anniversary arcade stick is excellent. I don't think it will come anywhere near $140, either.

I already miss the joystick thread. It was very useful for several reasons, including links to stuff at Hori's website and stuff at SRK. Whatever. I'm so thrilled the retarded OTT vs. GGT pissing contest managed to wipe out some good threads.

Anyhow, I broke down and bought Street Fighter Alpha off the PSN store yesterday. I realize it isn't a perfect port but waaaaaaay back in 1995, it was the game that prompted me to sell a bunch of Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo stuff and buy a Playstation. In hindsight I should've gotten a Saturn and the Saturn version but whatever, I was only like 16.

for now stick with the basics... the combo system is hella chain style so jus go for stuff like punch, kick, slash, special move... then later on you learn more advanced air combos and juggles and roman cancels and stuff

I really don't like how things are going and important threads are getting merged or whatever. I really thought the arcade stick thread needed to be it's own thing. It wasn't trying to isolate itself to a single genre (though the majority of sticks owners did use it for fighting games).

For what it's worth to whoever looks into these sort of things, I want arcade sticks for fighting games and various XBLA titles. Have you tried dashing consistantly in Golden Axe with the 360 pad? Fucking nightmare. I used my stick all the time for that game until my puppy chewed the cord apart. Half the reason I was so psyched about the US HRAPs and the Madcatz SFIV sticks was because I could get one to use for both fighting stuff like VF5 and SF IV and arcade games.

If CVS2 is for PS2, I wouldn't do it. Not because CVS2 is one of my favorite games, but mostly because of how hard to find the T5 stick is as well as a PS2 CVS2 copy.

I don't know how many people this applies to but Guilty Gear Judgement for the PSP hit the Playstation Store a couple days ago. I would've "meh'd" it but then I found that it is only $5.99. I bit if only because for that price I can't really bitch about imperfect controls. Plus I sorta regretted selling the cheapass retail copy I had several months ago.

EDIT - After spending about 45 minutes with GGX2 within Guilty Gear Judgement I can confidently say I made a good purchase. I'm far from being great at GG but I had no real problems using Axel to beat up the computer. The "easy" command setting is a godsend. From what I can tell it simply makes inputting specials "looser". It's hard to explain but after playing SFA3 Upper (or whatever the PSP version was called) and switching to GGX2, I can say that it's easier to pull off supers and specials in GGX2.

For what it's worth to whoever looks into these sort of things, I want arcade sticks for fighting games and various XBLA titles. Have you tried dashing consistantly in Golden Axe with the 360 pad? Fucking nightmare. I used my stick all the time for that game until my puppy chewed the cord apart. Half the reason I was so psyched about the US HRAPs and the Madcatz SFIV sticks was because I could get one to use for both fighting stuff like VF5 and SF IV and arcade games.

Visual wise, 3D graphics and detail, Tekken 6 is superior than anything else! It is SO different when watching a video comparing it to the HD monitor at it's full frame rate...

KOF XII and BlazBlue are pretty yes. I can't say anything about KOF XII since I haven't seen it up close, but BlazBlue is not as pretty as Tekken 6(initial impact wise). I've played that one a lot.

Thanks for the impressions MM. IMO, what I've seen of Blaz Blue suggests it's the weakest visually of those 3 (different) games. I've always enjoyed the graphics of the Tekken series. Especially the cutscenes.

KOF98 UM is pretty tight. It's essentially '98 with more characters ('96 Boss Team FTW!), 3D backgrounds that look just like '98 on Dreamcast, 480p support, and a new groove, Ultimate, that I've never used. The AI is tuned up and is a good challenge.

Overall, if you like '98, you'll like '98 UM. KOFXI is excellent too. As far as a comparison goes, it's old school KOF vs. new school KOF. Both have good things and the roster is different enough so that you can play both and have a good time. :)

Toshinden coming back: Yay? I really, really enjoyed Remix on Saturn back in the day, but I just tried it on an emu a couple weeks back... and it is unplayable. Anyone recommend 3 or 4 on PS1? Maybe it's just too old for me to play now :(

GG advice: Jeki's right. Get the basics down, combo system is crazy flexible, and once you get that down, Roman Cancels, False Roman Cancels, juggles, Bursts, etc. are all easy to learn, tough to master. My advice though: don't fuck around with the instant kill attacks. They're fun against friends that don't know the game, but pretty much completely useless in actual play.

Finally, a question: I have Tekken Dark Resurrection on PSP, but can't stand the imprecise D-pad. Against the brutal AI, just too infuriating. So I picked up 5 on PS2, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Now that I have a PS3, the PSN Tekken DR is looking tempting, but what I want to know is this: Is it a significant change on 5 to warrant picking up. I probably won't pick up the online play add on, as my internet is too unreliable (why I don't play SC4 online :( )

It's not too bad if you sand down the outer ring of it. It still mostly sucks though. I blew my wireless 360 controller's Dpad out. Left and down barely work now, thanks to VF5.

I played 5 quite a bit though, so I don't think I'll have much trouble hopping back in. I'm just terribly afraid of them trying to sell us content that's already on the disc, and the only way to unlock it is to pay real money.

Edit: Is it crazy of me to say I'd rather want a new Capcom vs SNK than a new Marvel vs Capcom? Because I kinda do :\

I agree. Though I have always preferred CVS2 over MVC2, high-level MVC2 play had shorter matches than most people would expect. As I've mentioned before it's insane how tight MVC2 is on execution & timing regardless of what it looks like on screen. Obviously too low-tier MVC2 matches tend to take a lot longer than your normal high tier team matches (damage scaling, ridiculous separation between MVC2 tiers)

Not that CVS2 is missing all that (since it took me a handful of months to learn how to roll cancel properly) but though both games are visually different, as Jim said both are very capable (and execution heavy) fighting games.

They say the hardcore will like the challenge, but the casual audience coming over from the DS games might "be in for a shock". I have the first Bleach DS game and I have to say, as awesome as the gameplay is, you really need to be a fan of the show before you pick it up. I didn't watch any episodes before I got it and it just never clicked with me. The characters just look generic as hell. The same black kimono or karate uniform or whatever it's called is on almost everybody. The only way to tell the difference between who is who is hair color, skin color, or a guy with a laundry basket on his head. Hulu has some subbed episodes up so I think I might need to watch a little bit before I go back to Blade of Fate. Good game, but you need to be a fan.


I've been going crazy the last few days. I bought a new HDTV last week and I've been trying to get the settings just right so my PS2 games won't look like crap. I've been using the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology to help me calibrate it and I think it looks okay now. I think I figured it out, but I think I'm going to have to find some component cables for the PS2 at some point. On the plus side, VF5, DOA4 and Soul Calibur IV look fantastic on it.

Jacky is pretty similar to his VF4 Evo version. You should be able to jump in and kick some ass. You should just hit up training for a bit though, and check him out.

i think from 4 to 5 alot of the knee combos from evo don't work or are really unsafe in the risk vs. reward department compared to other combos you can do at the amount of frame advantage a knee would give you.

Saw The Roots, Gym Class Heroes and Estelle with my girlfriend over the weekend at SJSU. Seeing that she is amazing, I convinced my girlfriend to let us kill an hour at the Bowling Center where they had SFIV among everything else I play.

Put my quarter for SFIV on the glass, this dude comes up takes it and uses my spot to play as Akuma. I looked super confused and a couple of guys who saw me put up the quarter were pissed haha :)

I think the funniest thing one of them told me was, "You are the winner IMO. You obviously have a girlfriend and you don't smell. Yup, you win"

Might be one of the top random/confusing/funny moments I've ever had at an arcade.

Nice! It was a fantastic show. Love the picture your friend took. I was sitting down watching The Roots at the beginning of their set and I heard everyone cheer. That guy in blue ran out and I thought "Hey that looks like Mos Def, but with a giant beard". Started to look closer and pretty much shat myself. The Roots + Mos Def= Tha Win

I don't really know how I feel about them yet. It looks sharp, but the people in the background of T. I believe the compilation in general supports all the additional characters from the console versions of the game(s), once you've unlocked everything. I really need to track down a copy of this game as it's the one major Street Fighter console game I've always wanted that I don't have. I'm still not sure why I never made much of an effort to pursue it.

Balrog, Juni, and Juli are secret characters in Alpha 3.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Arranged includes Fei-long, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Guile, and Evil Ryu

Hyper Street Fighter Alpha includes every character from every iteration including Arranged. It also includes new isms:

Normal Mode S-ism 1 (Green) -- Characters gain access to chain combos and Advancing Guard

Mazi Mode S-ism 2 (Blue) -- Characters can parry

Saikyo Mode S-ism 3 (Pink) -- No super combos but you get a massive damage increase and CPS1 Chain Combos (plays like SFII)

Classic Mode S-ism (Red) -- alternate special moves and super combos, Ken gains access to the moves he had in the CvS series

when i played graham in sf4 he used gief, dunno who he used for sthd.

as far as the dudes who were playing in that vid the only one i knew was jeff and i think it was his first match so judging from his play it just looked like safe play with zoning fireballs and alot of anti air standing hk. tourney was basically one and out with no warmup so i'd say everyone was just trying to feel it out. there was also some speculation of lag on the monitors and there were some complaints on the sticks so those could also be contributing factors. sf4 i know it was alot of people's first time playing it (like me) so i wouldn't expect alot of 1 frame link corner only special cancel into level 2 fadc into ultra combos like you see in all the japanese vids these days.

there were alot of good players (of other games like sf3, cvs2, t5dr) who i knew or knew of like a bunch of sf state, bunch of east bay, bunch of keystone guys. there were also a bunch of people who just seemed like really casual gamers.

the brackets were pretty random. like most everyone i knew at least won their first match in sf4. by the time it got to final 4 in sf4 it was jeff, graham, choi, and our friend steve who at the time was probably the best gief player at sf state. i didn't really pay much attention to what happened in sthd because i was peaced out in the first round.

i think by the time it got to final 4 in sf4 i think someone more knowledgeable like seth was doing the commentary (i think i remember someone calling out combos over a speaker) but yeah looking back i didn't even notice these dudes doing the commentary because of how loud everything else was and all the games going on.
