BESLAN, Russia - More than 100 people were killed Friday in and around a Russian school as a three-day showdown between Russian security forces and suspected Chechen militants erupted in a bloody climax.

Amid a series of explosions, gunfire and screams of fleeing children, commandos stormed the building where militants strapped with bombs had held hundreds of captives since Wednesday. Most of the dead were children, and more than half of the 400 people hospitalized were students, Russian officials said.

This makes me feel sick to my stomach...Why does our world have to work in this way? I know that Russia and Checnya have had their problems, but what is accomplished by killing innocent children and teachers?

Russia wasnt exactly kind to Chechyna when they invaded years ago, another example of violence begetting violence. It'll take some kind of catastrophic worldwide disaster unfortunately but someday people will put historic conflicts behind them and start fresh.

Because the world can be cold and heartless place sometimes...

Anyways, I find it sad that the militants are willing to use children for their acts of terror. It is just cowardly.

I feel bad for those Russians. Children should never be involved in these things.

Russia has always been this way on regards to the Chechan rebels. Putin bases his career on his hard line tactics with them. It sucks, but I knew it was going to happen.

Yeah they really should have negotiated more but just like they did at the Moscow theatre the went in guns blazing and took the casualties as neccessary to save the greater group and most of the terrorists got away from what I read on another site.

yeah I think the russians just do things differently. Just like they wouldn't admit bombs blew up those 2 planes a few weeks ago. When I heard about this, I first thought it was going to be like when they gased the theatre and killed a bunch of civilians to end the conflict. But it seems that there are still people inside and it's not over yet. Yea, it really is senseless.

Every country does things differently, and in this case, this is the wrong way to handle something.

No amount of negotiation was going to save those children.
The whole place was booby trapped. They shot at the children when they tried to escape. The killed people who were injured. Russia did the right thing all those people would have died. They had no interest in bartering life. They are trying to prove a point in the most malicious way.
I hate them.
