Yeah, something is definitely wrong. I saw Nathan's town open so I went to get my fossils. When I got back, he was gone. A while later I tried to open my gate and it said another town was open, Nathan's. But every time I tried to go it said there was no response. Now it lets me open the gate without even giving me the message of others being open.
I'll try to visit you Alex and see if it goes through. If not, then I'm just going to watch some tv.

Too many wifi errors today. Mostly 61070, but now when I do manage to connect and see a list of towns, it gives me 80430 errors whenever I try to visit someone.
I guess all those people who got AC as a gift are all trying to get online now.
It's not looking too good when even the Nintendo Wi-Fi page won't load properly:

I'm trying, but it says I need more trees. And then I put down trees and it tells me I have too many  (probably just a few acres that need some). Now I'm just throwing flowers everywhere.
-
I have the triforce :)
yeah, it was telling me that for a while. and i finally gave in and made a grid out of my town by placing tiles on the ground. this would have gone pretty quick. but i made a mistake and gridded my town into a 4x4 grid, instead of a 5x5 grid. once i realized my mistake, i had to regrid everything and plant a bunch of more trees since i'd cut town a bunch.
the problem i was having, i found out, was that if you have too few or too many trees you need a ton of flowers. but there's a sweet spot.
for 8 of the squares (there's 25), if you have 12-15 trees, you only need 3 flowers.
and for the rest of the squares, if you have 10-17 trees, you won't need any flowers.
that's not the only way to do it, but for me it was the easiest.
edit - also i should mention. you can have too many trees, but you can't have too many flowers.

I just kept planting tree after tree after tree and flower after flower after flower. Then when she FINALLY told me I had too many trees, I waited one more day to see which saplings died. Checked again--not enough trees.
So I walked around to the first dead sapling and planted a new fruit right next to it. Check environment--not enough. Plant another near the next dead sapling. Check environment--not enough. Plant another--too many.
The next day I checked on those specific saplings that I planted. Only one didn't make it, but she told me I didn't have enough. So I planted another nearby it and she told me I had too many. So that general region was the only spot that needed that extra sapling by that point.
I walked around and looked for trees that were right next to others. I cut down two serious perpetrators and went back to town hall. Perfect!
The next day, I found my newest sapling had made it. It was snowing, so flower watering wasn't necessary; just had to go pluck the weeds and got a perfect again.
The rule of thumb I followed with flowers was try to make it so that no matter where you are, you can always see two flowers.
I'm looking forward to getting this can so I can level some trees and make lush flowing hybrid factories!

no, it's 25 16x16s. the whole town is 80x80. and you want to cut it into a 5x5 grid.
and 80/5=16. so when i made my grid, i was counting to 16 and putting a tile down.
I'm looking forward to getting this can so I can level some trees and make lush flowing hybrid factories!
yea, i definitely want to get this done before spring. i love cutting away a spot for a garden, and growing some unique flowers.

Yeah im playing it less and less. I usually turn it on when i wake up to do the normal run through. Get the money rock, see if anything is lost/recycled, find X's, pulls weeds, see what the shops are selling. After that i turn it off. My town is kind of torn up, so i feel like its somewhat useless to try to make it look nice, when the grass grows back so damn slow, even with flowers.

Are there any CAGs here with Animal Crossing City Folk, especially with Wii Speak, who don't so much play it themselves as who have young kid(s) who do? My 7 year old (8 in March) decided to use some Gamestop gift cards to buy this game yesterday, and with the WiiSpeak mic, and I really wish he had some online friends to play the game with and to use the WiiSpeak with. It's just an idea I've been batting around: an adult supervised (always a parent with each kid) online Animal Crossing play and chat session, as a way to play the game online and to make some online friends. I actually haven't even run this idea by my son yet - he might completely freak out at the idea :), but I figured I'd throw the idea out there anyway and see if anyone had a way to make it better.

I haven't played this game for awhile, since basically the fishing tourney, even then I didn't even play it.
I've been more interested in my Xbox 360. What did we expect though? I mean it's another Animal Crossing game, that's basically the DS version, just a bit more updated.
The Gamecube version for some reason was more addicting, I don't know what it was, but the town actually felt, well like a town. The train was awesome to.
I miss those days of the Gamecube version, the DS version didn't catch my interest, and the Wii version caught my interest a little bit, but not a lot.
I think as I grow older the more bored I become of Animal Crossing, it's a sad but true reality. :(

I agree; the Gamecube version was much more addicting. For me, the novelty of having a game that runs off the system's internal clock was amazing at the time. It was also the first game I played where I really felt a community aspect online, even though we couldn't actually meet.
It's hard to explain, but it was really cool when the first holiday (Harvest Moon Festival) rolled around on the GC, and everyone who got the game around release was experiencing that holiday for the first time; it didn't matter how many hours each player put in beforehand.

This game has the same problem that every Wii game has; it doesn't have much meat to it. I know saying "AC doesn't have a lot" sounds stupid. Of course it is. BUT, if you played one or both of the previous titles...well...you've done this once or twice already...
Sure, the WiFi is great! However, it can only be so great. Attacking Tom Nook's store is only so funny after a certain amount of times. Trapping villagers is only funny so many times. ETC.
The only things they added to the game SUCK.
-The City is really pointless. There was soooo much potential in "going to the city" but they ruined it. There's basically a need to go there once a week. Once for Redds, and to see if the auction house is taking bids. Once to see if any new emotions are available at the Marquee (and BTW..having ONLY 4 emotions is just STUPID.) You also really need to visit Gracies one a SEASON with like 2 million bells and your set.
-The Grass feature is the worst thing to happen to animal crossing. We did the TT trick and grew back all of our grass....we haven't ran SINCE..and ALREADY we have a good bit of torn up spots. ...On top of the fact that we haven't played as HARDCORE as we did prior to it.
This is like Smash Bros. I wanted to love the game so much and spend MONTHS playing it..but... yeah, that only held my interest for 2 months tops maybe. :-?

Well, my kids play it and they love having the Wii Speak on, though we haven't actually done that in several days. They really liked talking to Strell (where is he by the way?).
However, since Christmas day when I opened the PS3 and set it up with Little Big Planet, my kids have done little else. They play that game for hours every day. It was well worth the price of the PS3 just for that game alone. Wow... They really haven't done much with AC since then. I myself totally forgot about the turnips today - but that's OK because I made tons earlier in the week ;). But I know what everyone is saying - things will die down and it will be harder to find people online and such. That is one reason why I hit the turnip flipping so hard the other day. I wanted to have enough money in the town for all the kids to upgrade their houses and such before it got harder to do so.
Anyway, crunchewy, if you are interested maybe we could set up the kids to play at some point - sounds like a good idea. I'd have to get my kids interested in it again, but they might go for it with the Wii Speak usage. I'm not sure how much they will want to play with other kids, though. They seemed more interested in annoying my "friends" (ie, you guys) probably just because they felt like they were annoying me as well ;). Mine are 6, 8 (almost 9), and 11 (almost 12). It would probably be the youngest who would be most interested.

This whole thing seriously reads like a "I bought the game just to whine about it" motif. I'm predicting you'll sell your Wii by the end of 2009 and just become another mindless zombie talking up a bunch of nonsense about this entire system in general. I just can't buy the idea that you got the game with the sole purpose of playing it for a whole month before turning it in and calling it quits - there's a lot in life I wouldn't undertake if that was the limit of enjoyment I'd get out of it.
This whole paragraph could apply to a few other people on these boards, both in this thread specifically and those alluding to the game in general. It just really makes me wonder what motivations people have, because I hardly ever buy a game I legitimately disliked enough to consider trading/selling, and even then I'll just rid myself of it and that's all.
In related news, io: I haven't been around because this holiday season has been particularly stressful and eventful, and haven't been able to play in a while. However everything has more or less calmed down - I'm going to go play solo for a bit. I'm a few days behind and need to catch back up to present day.
Also I picked up a snazzy wireless keyboard finally, so now I can type chat quickly. It's on sale at Target this week - an S510 wireless Logitech desktop. Looks really nice (I would have bitten on the $15 one way back, but it was boring and not stylish). So I'll be popping up very soon again.

I did not like the online aspect of Brawl. With Melee, I lived a lot closer to friends and was able to play a lot. Not so much with Brawl and I really don't like how the online worked. It just felt too laggy for me. I enjoyed Brawl a lot, I'm just disappointed that the online wasn't great to the point where I'd still be playing it today.
And no, I don't see myself selling my Wii at all. There's surprisingly a few games that look good for 09.

I wanted a Nintendo developed game to be great. I really did. Brawl was advertised way too early for it to be as good as the hype, and it's not that great of a game to begin with. Mario Kart Wii, like Brawl, was dumbed down from it's predecessors. With all of the hate Nintendo has been getting as of late I wanted one game Nintendo did right. Instead they half-assed it like most Nintendo products as of late. My main issue with this is the recycling of content (which was expected) and how shitty the new content is. I agree with lilboo. The city could have been a great new feature, but it's little more than a bullet point.

Well, I know people (including myself) are starting to get bored with the game at the moment. But what I think what we need is to just maybe take a break off the game for a little while (Not trying to sound like a parent). What I mean is, there's so many games that can provide a different experience then what we've had over the last few weeks (Depending on how much you've played, this may have been one of the only or the only game youve played for a while, including me). I dont expect you to follow my advice, maybe some of you are already doing it, but I think if we lay of the Animal Crossing for a while, we would be more likely to come back later after playing a few other games you guys and myself havent played in a while (Heck, I just bought DBZ: BL special edition for 30 sealed and I plan on finally getting back into R2 nights). Also, I would appreciate if we can kind of try talking about the game like we have been before. I know that this thread wont last forever, but I dont see many games on these forums where CAGs are so well connected to each other, and Id like to keep it that way...just throwing in my two cents.

I don't think I can stop playing City Folk any time soon. I guess it depends on the person, but Animal Crossing is a game that I've always found time for (didn't officially stop playing WW till 2 weeks ago).
You guys need some tips on how to play Animal Crossing? One month is way too soon to be bored/running out of things to do. I've recently spent hours trying to get a perfect town rating, tried and failed at mapping out acres (I still need more trees, stupid Pelly!), made another perfect snowman, laughed at the short sheep, ordered a bunch of items for tomorrow (which is going to be sweet if my plan works out), got a pattern from Wendell, and I ran around swapping gifts with neighbors which led to a couple of new items and hilarity.
You know how villagers will offer to buy your coeli or tuna for only a couple hundred bells? Well lucy finally offered to sell me a rare fish. A Tuna, for only... wait for it:

It probably had more to do with how much money I had on me at the time. I caught her later and she traded it to me for a Classic Buffet.
Also, I never realized how small the sheep are:

I've also been conversing and trading gifts with a few poeple through letters. And I've made a list of all of my fossils, I just need to post it so I can start giving them away. There's like 30 of them.
I'm still wishing for a silver fishing rod, and we haven't even done any of the new holidays. I can't wait till summer comes so I can catch sharks and beetles. I purposely didn't bring over my WW catalog so I'd have more items to collect. Fun fun fun

Animal crossing seems to be one of those games where you could get burnt out if you try to play it for 5+ hours a day, and would be better to spread it out 4-5 days a week @ 1/2-1 hour of play per day. Of course, maybe its easier for me since this is my first Animal Crossing so I don't know what to expect.
I ran through my museum today, and it looks like I have a majority of the fossils so far. I just need to make a list of what I don't have so I can finish it off.
I've had 2 silver rods so far, but I'm holding out for a silver net. I need something bigger to catch those damn bees.

Fun fun fun
omg at Lucy! LOL! I was carrying a tuna to Nook's store and I stopped to talk to Jeremiah. He wanted to trade me a star shirt for the tuna.

I'm still having fun with this game. I'm not TTing or anything like that. The game last longer that way. I'm also having fun playing this game with my Mom. I love going into her town and showing her how to do things. It's fun to play with newbies.

I'm almost in my 5th week of playing the game, but I've still been playing every day. There's plenty for me to do in the game.
I have some people on my friends list who aren't CAGs and some of them usually have their gates open every single day.
I haven't caught a bagworm or popeyed goldfish this month yet, so I can go around and do that if I wanted to.
There are still lots more bugs/fish to catch later in the game.
I need to finish filling up my museum. Fossils are almost complete, but I still need bugs, fish, and real art.
My town rating still needs a lot of work.
I need to deposit billions more bells to get the ABD machine for my house. ;) I already have the piggy bank, but I've got a long way to go for the ABD.
Haven't gotten my bridge (being built this week), fountain, or windmill/lighthouse yet.
I don't have a silver rod/net/can/axe or golden rod/net/can/axe yet.
I've never seen Blanca, Gulliver, Gracie, or Wisp in my game... plus all of those other special event characters.
I'm still waiting on good turnip prices. The highest they've ever been in my town was around 156.
I'm also working on upgrading the three other houses in town so that I can have more than three rooms to decorate and more storage.
I've stopped building snowmen since snowballs are always where there's the least amount of snow and I have very little snow left in my town. I don't think I'll be TTing or hacking my grass back any time soon. Anyone have any extra snowman furniture to trade?
I imported one of my WW characters, but haven't used her much unless people ask if I have a particular item, then I'll order it, but I really haven't used her catalog for myself at all. I think I might start using her to order stuff to decorate the neighbors' houses with different series of furniture. :) All of my neighbors still have the festive trees I sent them. :-P So the neighbors give me 10 more rooms that I can decorate! It's annoying when they throw out an item I wanted them to keep, but I just end up mailing it to them again.
That's just a few things I can think of. Plus, some people I just added to my friends list just started the game, so I've had a whole bunch of new towns to visit. I'll be playing this game for a long time just like I did with the GC and DS versions.

Instead they half-assed it like most Nintendo products as of late. My main issue with this is the recycling of content (which was expected) and how shitty the new content is. I agree with lilboo. The city could have been a great new feature, but it's little more than a bullet point.
I'm not condoning the half-assed effort, but I am saying that doesn't make the game bad. Nor does it somehow disqualify it from being enjoyable. It's a rehash, but so much else in this industry is, and I see unfair amounts of teh haet leveled at some parties over others. I can still go to a restaurant and order a steak without thinking "Oh man, I totally had a steak at Steak 'n Steak last week, and it too was made of beef that was seared upon a grate looming above hot coals, when are these people going to give me the legendary Steakamune, which was hacked from the great giants that roam the astral plains of the planet Bovin-9?"
Want to know what Nintendo's thinking was? 'Cuz I can assuredly tell you the truth on that - they've hit on the idea that the Wii is bringing a huge influx of brand new people to their system, and in a larger sense, to this hobby itself. This said, they've figured out that they can ease people in and get products out quickly in favor of exposing this new group to things that they deem quality software. Once those hooks are in, then the sequel appears - either on this system or the next - and it's got a whole new following of players ready to drop the cash.
Again, this isn't condoning the rehash - I'm simply telling you what all those execs and developers were thinking, which is simply "we can do a halfass job here and allocate resources to the next one, because right now we've got a potential fanbase that's never seen this before, and it might be good to hook them now before we add in massive changes."
That's the thinking, which is kind of a way of saying "This game is sort of for veterans, but not really, 'cuz they've seen it all before, whereas noobs are going to think it's sliced bread."
Take that as you will, happy or sad, because no one who currently works under the banner of Nintendo gives a shit, and instead are laughing at the fact that you bought the game regardless that you probably could have surmised all of this beforehand.
For the record, I aint trying to sound condescending or anything, I'm merely pointing out what are (most likely) the facts here.
On another note, the idea of MKWii being "dumbed down" I find to be a hilarious statement - it was always meant to be a casual game and every time that sort of logic pops up I sort of shake my head and kill another angel. The bigger problem I have with MK is that there's so little effort there where it counts - the character models are horrid, there's no options online, we need the feather back, and perhaps implement an entirely new defense system that can skillfully allow the frontrunners to better avoid the fuck-you items like blue shells. That's what I want out of that game, and I'm not even that big of an MK dood.
Imma go dig up fossils now.
Edit: Oh oh oh. Some PC nerd help me out. Yeah you heard me call you a nerd. Anyway. I can haz wireless keyboard, and the receiver is plugged into the Wii. But I wants to split that and run it to the 360 as well. Hence, whenever I have either on, the receiver gets turned on by the respective system, and then I can type on either platform. Does such a thing exist? It's like a USB hub in reverse. I imagine I could get a KVM switch, but that seems like overkill when I'm just looking for a simple cable if at all possible.

I actually had a bit of time to play AC today, after not playng since Christmas. A lot of it had to do with general holiday happenings, and being sucked into PS3 land, but playing a bit today, I was anything but bored. I spent way too much time talking to my neighbors because I wanted to, little by little, I'm filling the museum. I think some people really need to play in moderation.
I haven't been online in a while, but I really enjoy the online aspect of the game. I've had so much fun playing with people that, like me, have an overactive imagination that could be considered unhealthy for a person in his twenties. I've had so much fun doing nothing in particular, and I like knowing I'm not the only one. Until the next AC comes out that has all the features and tweaks we want, I'm perfectly fine with enjoying what I've been given with City Folk, and getting the most out of it as it is.
Beccaree: Thanks for the Christmas present! I got it a bit late since i've been playing catch-up today, but it made my day. You've been my only source of robo-stuff these days

The online aspect of the game is truly what keeps it fresh for me - visiting other towns and having folks visit my town keeps me on my toes. There are quite a few people that I see online quite often, and being able to interact with them and notice changes in their town (and vice versa), as well as celebrating holidays together (heck, the 3-hour Jingle hunting last week was a blast!) and just socializing through chat (voice and text) and letters gives this game lasting appeal. Otherwise, without that, I very well might turn the game off until springtime when I start to see different fish and bugs.

I mentioned the idea to my 7 (8 in March) year old and, well, he slightly freaked out a bit. :) however, I decided to make my own character in the game and so will soon be wanting to try connecting online with you, Io, and others, and if your kids are there, my kids (my other son is 6 as of November and he's making a character in the game right now) will be there and there you go. Do different characters have different friend codes in this game, or is it just the town?
Also, how do I "flip" turnips for fun and profit? For that matter, where do you buy/sell turnips?

That's what I've been doing - an hour or so a day. I've done online play once so far, but I'm definitely open to having other people come visit my town, or visiting theirs (HINT HINT HINT) ;) .

1) I think different characters have different friend codes. I remember someone on the board listing his code, and his brothers. The town names were the same, so I'd imagine they were playing on the same system.
2) On sunday mornings (6-12) a character will appear in your town selling turnips. The white turnips are usually around 100 bells. They are only good for a week, so if you don't sell them by the next sunday, they will rot. Throughout the week, Nooks offers different prices to buy the bells. He offers 2 prices a day, before and after noon.
The buy back prices range from 50 bells to 600+, it's random, but seems to peek around thursday. You can visit other peoples towns and sell your turnips if you aren't getting any good prices in your town.

Well as I don't have Wi-Fi available usually, it makes the game less fun. I think the Single Player part of Animal Crossing has been turned down, with the addition of Multiplayer.
I wish Nintendo had decided to give the Wii a Ethernet cord slot.
I won't be selling my Wii, but I won't be using it much, unless I get some games for it.
The Wii is basically either a hit or a miss for a person, you can either love it or hate it. I basically felt the Wii was a miss for me, but I don't hate it, I'm just dissapointed with it. I know the Newcomers to gaming probably really like it (my dad, because of it's motion controls), but they could have done some things to try and please the Gamers that have been gaming.
I know it's only been two years since the console has been released, but that's really enough time for the console to build up its game collection. I actually did enjoy the Wii for awhile, but the joy and glee you get from the console kind of dies down after awhile.
As they say to much of a good thing is a bad thing. I'm not saying that the Wii won't please the gamers that have been gaming for years, but it may dissapoint some.

I played the Gamecube version back in the day when it first came out. I played for about a month and then never touched it again. I was playing for hours and hours each day though. I just got burnt out.
I've been playing this version for a month now too. Some days I play for an hour or 2 but most days I just play for a few minutes. I've considered quitting a few times but then I'll end up having a blast one day out of the blue. Multiplayer is great too. I don't visit other towns too often but I can see why people like it.
I'm looking forward to the next AC game too. I think they need to make a lot of changes to freshen things up but this could be a great series.

Where'd you get your facts? From the "naw, really?" department? Of course Nintendo likes easy money. We all know the problem here.
As for Mario Kart, it is dumbed down. A match in Mario Kart Wii online is something like this:
All but one or two have bikes. All get the countdown boost and immideately start wheelieing. The person in last gets a bullet bill or some shit and is now first. Players continue wheelieing until they go off a ramp, in which case they do a trick and continue wheelieing. (etc.)

Yer gonna have to try harder than that, kid. You can start with learning the difference between my opinion versus what I believe to be Nintendo's, instead of dismissing my responses with that Frenchman's wave. I like to think I've got a good hold on their unique logic that they pull from the bottom of swamps, where they brush away the slime and find a bit of glittering gold. But that doesn't mean I wanted to get crap on my hands just so I could can haz shineez rokk.
A typical online MK match on the DS meant dealing with hackers. Dumbed down!
Mario Kart 64 had no online. SUPER dumbed down!
Super Mario Kart too lacked online, and only enough for two players! ULTRA MEGAZORD dumbed down!
If you just base it on the online model - where people are pricks and exploit everything to begin with - then you might as well throw out the innards of an orange because the skin is so tough and nasty, and certainly there couldn't be anything good to eat inside. Online. A world where you either find a big group of idiots or a big group of cheating psychos whose entire life they evaluate based on whether or not they can win against total strangers by using every last cheap or illegal trick in the book. Sounds like something that apparently grievously competitive would be anything but casual.
That aint how you measure a game.

Oh, yeah.
My sweetie got me City Folk for my birthday on December 9th, and I've been suffering ever since, because I don't have a Wii to play it on. I got the Wii for Christmas, and we finally got it set up a few days ago. I'm so happy - it's my first current generation platform (no PS3 or Xbox/360, yet) so I feel really advanced with those motion controls and that wonderful blue light that comes on when you insert a disc.
I actually restarted my town since the first one had a horrid layout, and I didn't want to suffer with it for months on end. Third time's a charm, and now I live on the beach, near a ramp filled with trees. Can't wait to get an axe. I'm not online yet (we're both cowards, and claim to be antisocial, but I suspect we would both enjoy online play too much) but it will happen eventually. I see all of you having so much fun visiting everyone else's towns, and it looks great - it would certainly help with collecting fossils and getting a variety of fruit.
I love the lights on the trees. Was not expecting that at all. I was hoping that we would be able to set up 2 different towns, but the instructions say that there can only be one town per Wii! He's been busying himself playing Elebits, but I know he wants his own town....

I have a question about sharing friend codes and sharing the game with your kids. I would like to open the flood gates for myself, while not opening the flood gates for my kids, but given that things like letters sent get repeated by residents, if I share my friend code with others and some bozo sends a letter with language and such I'd rather my kids not read, would they then see it via this mechanic of the game even though it came as part of sharing *my* friend code and not theirs?
Perhaps this doesn't even make sense - I'm not an expert on this game. I just know that in the game the residents talk about how they like to read letters that others have sent them and that when you share friend codes, you can send letters to other peoples towns.

It is possible I suppose, but I have yet to see that happen. My kids haven't seen a letter from anyone here. Besides, it is unlikely you'll get stuff like that from CAGs. I don't think they share letters that often anyway.
I'm actually pretty annoyed that each person needs their own friend code. My kids wanted to play online but no one is going to want to reg each of us separetely. Well, and I'm also annoyed that there's no coop/splitscreen, which I think is a crime not to have included.

I just ran into nbballard's town. The chef hat (and now the entire chef outfit) is mine, and I finally figured out I'd been planting coconuts in the wrong place. Didn't take any fossils or anything else, though - just the coconuts. Short stint of the game over; time to hit the sack. :D
You get the gold and silver tools from Tom Nook, right? I haven't found any of them yet.

I wouldn't worry about it. Admittedly, I've only been playing for a week or so, but I haven't had a letter shared with me yet. When they did share letters in the GameCube version, there would usually be one letter a character would show over and over.
Possible, yes, but I wouldn't worry about it. If you'd like, you could make that a condition of adding people to your friends list - I can't imagine anyone here would disagree.

I'll probably have some kind of event tomorrow night. Hacked items galore for those who didn't get in on my first mini-giveaway. This one will be much bigger with much more items to go around. Since I know people have parties and whatnot to attend, it will probably be far away from 12AM EST. Right now I'm thinking:
Many sets of golden and some silver tools
Many invisible chairs, pikmins, blue falcons, and red pikmin hats
And whatever you people request...
NOTE: I'm not getting rid of ACCF just yet, and chances are I'll never follow through with getting rid of it because I have terrible follow through on tasks. Just ask Strell. I've been working on beating EarthBound since around November of LAST year. On the plus side, I AM working on it...
^^^ Definitely want the blue falcon and red pikmin hats... I'll hold off on the tools and try to get them the hard way ;). Is tomorrow (I mean today) New Years already? Crap... Well, I have no plans except to play Little Big Planet but I'll make sure to get on AC for the first time in a few days.

No problem on the fossils- anything to help.
I wonder how fast you could finish a whole town with 4 people helping.. but i just remembered that the people connected over wifi have that annoying delay when using tools, etc.

Well I'm being more exact about it though. Putting between 12-13 trees for each 16x16 acre so I'm mapping them out with patterns. I don't think any visitors can lay down patterns anyway so its a moot point. Would probably be doable though if you didn't care where your trees were planted and you split the town up into sections.

I think as far as the friends list goes, when you both register each other you get a heart with an empty middle. When you guys connect to one of each others town, it turns solid. If there is no heart, then they didnt register you yet. So if there are people after a while who dont have a heart, delete them.

If anyone wants to drop by later on, you're more than welcome. Also, if you've got any extras of the Nintendo-themed items (or space-themed, to satisfy my nerdy, aerospace engineering major side), I haven't found any yet, so I'd love a few donations. ;)

I think the "rare items" charm means spotlight items at Nook's. I did one of those last month.
These are the different charms I've figured out so far:
"rare items" - spotlight @ Nook's (it might also be gyroid related, but I think it's spotlight items)
"lost items" - Mario items from every balloon you pop
"ancient rewards" - 5 fossils instead of 3
"protection from swarms that fall from trees" - no bees
Even though town charms are good for the the whole month, the effects only last about a day after you do them, so you have to go back to the town to do them again.

I'll add you guys, but of course it means 2 others have to go. The problem is I think I got rid of all the non-hearts earlier... So now it's just people who don't seem to play any more, which is harder to determine.
As for the shirt thing on New Years, is that new? I've never heard of that one. If that is a carry-over from the last games then, well, I guess that's what is kind of cool about this game - you keep finding out about new events even after playing for so long.
So, weird thing on New Years Eve. As I was running around doing some cleaning and getting extra poppers, I kept seeing huge river fish. Ended up catching a pike and TWO stringfish! They also seemed way easier to catch that I remember from the GC game - nothing like the Coelacanth.

Yeah - that was awesome - thanks Knoxx and Romeo for all that fruit, and damn, even a pinball machine. Wow. At some point I'll make it up to you guys. Of course I got back to my town and realized I'd mailed my shovel to my son, since I'd just gotten it and we only had one, so I had no shovel to dig up the tree stumps for the fruit planting. Oops. Hopefully Tom's got another one tomorrow, otherwise my son will have one in his mail.

Yeah, they seem to be pretty quick with repairs. It's super bubble wrapped and taped all around. Ready to go in the mail tomorrow.
I picked up all of my flowers and gave Walker a hug. We'll see if he's still there when I get back.

Sorry about all those kicks fellas. I'm done for tonight so I'll catch up with you guys later in the week. We definitely need to wax poetic again soon!!!

Maybe...I'm on COX also, so that's comforting to know that it was prolly the source, not my router/setup. I think Romeo left the King Tut masks.

Gothic, Majora's Mask can be obtained via Tom Nook's point system. It's something like 5,000 points though.
Daisy, thanks for the fossils! I haven't gotten them yet but I'll be sure to check this afternoon. If I get anything you need you'll get first dibs.
Yeah, I hate how my list has filled up so fast. This is crap. I thought Brawl's 64 slots was bad but both Mario Kart and Animal Crossing's lists are a joke. I can't really add anyone else since I already have everyone cross registered on my list. I can't imagine it takes up that much space to store one friend code. I hate to beat a dead horse by complaining about Nintendo's online implementations, but Nintendo likes to keep pouring salt into the wounds by making absolutely no improvements whatsoever.

How many of you guys use the mic? I haven't set it up yet (mostly because I don't want anyone to hear my idiot family talking baby talk to our dogs), but probably will when I'm back up at college. Does the mic capture everything, or is it a press-to-talk setup?
crunchewy
01-02-2009, 05:42 PM
We have WiiSpeak but haven't really been able to use it yet - nobody on the other end has had it. We can speak to them, but one way like that isn't satisfying. There is no push-to-talk - it is either on or off and that's it, at least in AC. Note, though, that you can tell if it is in use because a light glows on it when so. If everybody else has voice chat turned off the light won't glow and then it isn't sending sound.
I'd love to try out two way use some time. Just let me know when.
Mic is definitely a "pick up everything all the time" deal - just ask any CAGs who have played when my kids were around ;). I've had it muted on my last few sessions though. It is a nice feature, though, as crunhewy pointed out, that the light goes off when the other players are all muted. At least you know no one else is listening at that point.
And just to be clear, you can turn it off and on pretty easily - but you do have to go into the friend menu to do so. It isn't too hard - when the kids started fighting or whining or something I'd jump in there as quick as possible and mute...

Always tell the truth! You won't be able to get an axe at least from my experience. As far as when she asks, "How do I look?", I don't remember what I answered but I think it could go either way. I got positive responses for being honest most of the time.
When you get the sliders asking you to grade on certain questions, don't move it. It seems that if you move it any it screws up your chances of getting the axe.

Yes.
Also, Gothic smells. I can't have smelly aquatic mammals on my list, dammit. Not after what happened last time.
When I get back into regular time, I'll see if there are any stragglers on my list, and drop them like [sassy 2008 celebrity reference]. 32 friends is abnormally low. This game is billed more as a communicative multiplayer game than, say, Brawl was, and I hit the stupid limit on that one too.
Here's hoping the next system fixes all this with a unified code and a hard drive....
But anyway, yes, I'm at the limit. :( I actually spent a good portion of yesterday writing a big text file full of everyone's AC name/number/town, with the intention of printing it out and keeping it near my system.
It sounds pathetic...because it is!

I think Nintendo screwed Winter up in this game, Snow will not fall on dirt, thus causing not much snow to be on the ground. Then you have 3 seasons where you walk on the grass a lot, then Winter comes and you have barely any snow.

The Ravens won. Yeah! The Colts lost. Yeah! There was no more football to watch, so what was the problem? ;^) Well, I'm not actually a huge football fan, though I do like football and do watch it sometimes and will watch the Ravens in the playoffs. Really I only started to watch football this season once we got an HDTV because it was in HDTV. Funny, that. I love having an antenna. I am a *HUGE* antenna fan now. Go antenna!
Last night I opened my gates and Rose and Romeo came to visit. I didn't have a lot of time and there was one disconnect for some reason, but in the end Rose got her fruits, including many brought by Romeo, and it was a good time. I know this game will get boring eventually, but so far I'm really enjoying it. The online component definitely adds to the game. I think I've already got buttle in my friends list, but I'll double-check that tonight and will PM my info to you then.
Also, I got to experience WiiSpeak use when my kids played with their cousin on Saturday morning. WiiSpeak has it's pluses and minuses. First, it worked well even though we have the slowest DSL service available from Verizon. No dropouts or anything. Sound quality wasn't great, but it was good enough. I wonder if it's higher quality on a faster connection or if it is the same? One oddity about WiiSpeak is that you aren't suppose to adjust the volume on your TV after a connection is established, which seems like a pretty lousy limitation. Presumably this has to do with avoiding echoing/feedback. I didn't try adjusting the volume as we didn't need to, but what if you couldn't hear what the other person was saying? Perhaps you could turn off WiiSpeak, adjust the volume, and then turn it back on and then it would adjust to the new volume - I'm not sure. Requires experimentation. One problem is that if you aren't typing, then you don't have any visual indication of where other people are unless you can actually see them. This can be remedied by typing something periodically. They should have had a little WiiSpeak icon bubble floating above you at all times, at least optionally, that would serve that purpose. Lastly, there is definitely charm lost. For me, I think I would much rather play with text chat and that's how I'll play. However, and this is a big however, for my kids, WiiSpeak is fantastic. They can't type on a keyboard with anything even close to something slightly reminiscent of speed. It's like, H...............E........L...L.................... ..O............! For them, WiiSpeak is perfect. Plus they get a huge kick out of being able to play the game with and hear their cousin on the TV. My 7 year old was so excited he was running back and forth and fell down several times from sliding on our wood floors in his sock feet. :)

Who gets the Kat items in this game? Just the person who brought the daughter or do both players get an item this time?
Person who does the brining gets the gift.

I just got AC: CF for Christmas, and my town is still pretty pitiful. Anyone want to help me out with some fruit? I'll go back through the thread and add some folks before the Eagles game starts. Gates are open and I'll be in and out periodically.

My flowers keep dying now. I spent all that time planting them, and sorting them. Now they die. Thanks AC.

That's why you water them. ;)
Or pray for rain.

That was my biggest problem with Wild World, and it made it's way to City Folk too. It gives you no indication that you've watered something correctly. In WW I had hundreds of hybrids around my town, but every day I would run around and see chunks of missing flowers because I had somehow messed up trying to water them the day before. It didn't help that there was an average of 30-40 newly wilted flowers every day.
At least City Folk seems to have cut down on the number of wilted flowers you get. I noticed they wilt about every other day, and the rain/snow usually gives me a break.

I so want to play AC right now and you guys are purposely not playing!

You only need to water the ones that are brown.

going to be a slow week in Memphis. . My power went out Sunday night, and my bedroom clock lost power. My morning routine was destroyed, and before i remembered to go buy turnips it was 1:30...
Oh well, I guess I can always cross animals next week.

So I took some pics. Here they are with commentary.
Picture 1: I think my new neighbor Friga is really lazy.

LOL, it's funny when they want you to deliver to someone who's standing right there. :P
Two 50% off sales in a row?! Wow. I hope your Nook doesn't close up shop like my local Circuit City.

Anyone need the following fossils?
-Mammoth skull
-Ankylo torso
-Seismo tail
-Pachy torso
Also, I think my game is broken!! Last 4 days all I can find are 3 fossils and a pitfall, no gyroids. I've looked behind EVERY tree and building by pushing "up" and can't find the gyroids.
All the previous days I found 3 fossils, 2 gyroids, and 1 pitfall.

You can only find gyroids the day after it rains/snows.

You can't overwater, you just need to make sure the water is getting on the flower.
Also make sure you don't run over a brown flower, as it will tear up immediately.
On another note, I've made arrangements to trade this game off at the end of the week. I should have my golden watering can by then. I want to make sure I have it by Friday, as it will be a lot harder to get later on if I decide to get this game again, since my town will be overrun by weeds. I've got the 500k bells that I saved up for the fountain, but I'm just putting it in the bank to collect interest for my possible future return.

I think I'm nearing the Tree per Acre requirement for a Perfect Town run. I believe I need like 3 trees in 2 or 3 acres. I just need about 40-50 more flowers though, which is going to be the hard part. I'm going to have to pickup each flower, store them in my house until I have enough, and then I can begin the run.

Well, I probably need all of those seeing how my museum has barely anything yet (but I'd need to check to see what I have - I can't remember), but I don't have any duplicates to give in return. About all I could offer is a variety of fruits in a few days once they finish growing (I hope), some still laying on the ground not yet planted, and as many cherries as you want right now, plus voluminous well wishes and all the fish you can catch. Add me to your friends list regardless and stop in for a visit if you see the gate open:

The Wii is just barely arriving at the repair center today. Sorry Jason, I don't know what's up with my letters. Sometimes they go instantly and sometimes they never show up  Maybe it needs to complete a mailing cycle before it gets sent? And then I need to turn it on after that? I know I've received letters from friends at like 12am so that doesn't make sense at all.
But I mailed your letters around 5pm right before I boxed the wii up. I mailed Knoximus his letter on Decemeber 31st. I guess none of them arrived :bomb: Sorry guys.

I thought she had her Wii back already. My bad.
I was wondering though if it had something to do with you actually having to turn your Wii on again, which really doesn't make much sense.

I have to presume that mail only gets sent outside if you go outside or open your gate or otherwise connect to Nintendo WiFi. I would presume that any time it is going to connect to Nintendo WiFi, which it would have to do in order to send a letter to another person's town, it would tell you that it was connecting to Nintendo WiFi, and the only times I see it ever doing that is when you either open the gate or look for open gates. I'm not sure, though. Maybe it does some behind the scenes connecting without telling you. I appears to me, at least, that friends lists don't update until you do one or the other of those things, so I'm guessing mail is the same way.

I sent mail to someone last night and even visited his town just a few minutes ago. He still didn't get my mail though. Hmm.
I don't know if I'd want to mail anything anymore if people are having problems on the receiving end. I'll just do deliveries or have people pick things up when they're in my town.

It took (2) days for a letter to make it to a friend's town.
