Here's a question for all the Wii Speak users:

When I didn't have Wii Speak, I was able to hear other people's chatter who did have it. I figured "oh, that's neat!" and wound up buying Wii Speak. When I turn Mic Chat to "Off" (in case it's noisy/don't feel like voice chatting/etc.) and it mutes everyone (not just me), thus I can't hear any chatter. Is this normal? If so, is there any way to make it so my mic is off but I can still hear others who have theirs on?

Which is a retarded thing to do. Sadly, I can't tell if this is from the hardware of the software. It's possible that WS was implemented at the last second, and thus shortcuts like this were made to get the game out on time (especially since....well, the whole game is a short cut, if you want to be a sly jerk about it). It really wouldn't make sense for the hardware to lock everyone out just because you mute yourself.

"Mute yourself," apparently to Animal Crossing, means "turn off all mic functions."

It is very, very dumb. I've taken to playing AC in picture-in-picture, since a lot of the time I'm doing a task that doesn't require sound (fishing). So I'll be watching something and playing at the same time. Usually I mute myself when I do this. It occurred to me the other night that I couldn't hear Io, but other players were chatting in such a way to suggest that his kids were talking.

So yeah. That's normal. And stupid. But there's little I can do about it now.

You'd think Nintendo - champion of child services - might understand that the option to mute people on an individual basis might be a good idea, instead of this all-or-nothing attitude.

Hopefully that is more of a last minute implementation problem with AC, rather than something that will be a problem across all games. Though, I wouldn't be surprised, considering how boneheaded Nintendo can be when it comes to "new" tech.

Yeah, I have the same issue. Sometimes I mute it when the kids are being particularly rambunctious or my wife is downstairs (as she often forgets that everyone can hear her even after I warn her the mic is on). It would be nice to provide AT LEAST the capability of muting yourself and/or muting the incoming sound.

Ok thanks I bought the game when it came out at Best Buy and then got the bundle from Amazon on BF so I was going to return the game from the bundle to Best Buy and keep the Wii Speak. Just wanted to make sure the game was sealed before I opened it.

Question: Is there any way to give designs to other people, short of them appearing in the Able store? I.e., for the little AC "Christmas" gift thing, I could offer to make designs for people? I ask because I hesitate to plant trees in a place where a house might go. Would the house simply demolish the trees? Or does the game recognize that it can't build a house there?

What ends up happening is I'll skip any large open areas when it comes to planting new trees since I'm worried about this.

On that note, what's the max neighbors you can have? I tend to never let mine move out (and this game makes it even easier to get them to stay), so maybe I'll just not worry about it assuming I reach the max number of people in my town.

To get the option to mail a letter to another town you'll need to visit that person first. Then it'll be under your mailing options when you talk to Pelly/Phillis at the Town Hall.

A house can move in anywhere there is a sign post. You know, the signs that say stuff like "lol sell fruit n shit" and "don't run near fish".

I don't know if the game considers trees at all, but I'm guessing they don't.

In ACGC is was 15 and in ACWW maybe less.

Got a question for people: does anyone have specific info (more detailed than what's on Ninty's support site) on getting past error code 86420, especially for what ports to leave open? I've gotten the error code every single time I tried to visit another town. Tonight, we enabled DMZ and I was able to visit Daisydog's town, but my husband couldn't play World of Warcraft.

Ideally we'd like to be able to play both online at the same time, but right now, that's not happening. I've been checking Animal Crossing Ahead's forums and Google, but haven't come up with anything useful so far.

stumbled on a new fishing strategy that might work for some of the CAGs- In the old game, people used to suggest not watching the fish- but listening to the noise.. You would hit the button when you heard the bobber splash.. but we all know that trick doesn't really help with the rare fish.

I realized tonight though that the wiimote rumbles at a different strength for the real tug- which means the engine has to start powering up a little sooner, and it has a slightly different pitch. If you turn off your sound entirely and listen for the controller noise, you get a fraction more reaction time. It helped me catch my stringfish tonight.

Granted- this only really works if you have total silence at home, but it worked well for me tonight.

Speaking of shirts- anyone see any really cool custom shirts outside of the CAG team? I've seen the pug, ghostbusters and heroes. I wear a Silver Age Green Lantern shirt I made.. it's not as good as the one i had on the DS, but it does the job.

Ok Blueshinra, let's talk about 86420 error.

First, understand this up front - this particular error is like cancer. It doesn't die, you can't kill it - it is always there. Even when you think you've triumphed, it is slowly rebuilding the fortress and readying itself for another attack. Take your pick of metaphors - Starcraft's Zerg, Colin Ferrel a few years ago, Vampiremania - all itching to get under your skin with no other reason except to simply drive you insane with a relentless assault of irritation and pain.

Quite literally, it is the "fuck you" error. Nintendo doesn't call it that, but I think if you squint your eyes just enough, you can actually see those words hovering slowly in the background of whatever screen is displaying it. I googled around all over trying to find ports specific to Animal Crossing, but never found any. And until someone tells me how I can monitor the exact ports my router is attempting to use for various applications, I can't be much more help here.

Thanks for the tips, Strell. We ran into these sorts of things with DS games, but managed to get things to a point where the error codes showed up much less often. Looks like now we'll have to repeat the process for the Wii (also, we have things set up to automatically generate an IP address for it; no static IP yet). DMZ will have to remain a last resort, though.

EDIT: Can't have all the UDP ports open, and TCP won't work (WoW apparently insists on UDP). We'll give the rest a try.

I did visit Jantzn's town repeatedly tonight (he seemed to be away). I kept shuffling peaches over from my town to sell at his Nook and then grabbing Apples he had laying around below trees (he's got 100's). I hope that was OK. Today i found a Mummy Casket on sale. You can open it and there is a mummy inside, and you can actually store things in it like a dresser. Its awesome. Also Nook is closing his shop tomorrow...great, right when the turnips are supposed to be high priced. :bomb:

It's snowing in my place and I caught a lobster and a tuna right off the bat, and then no big shapes appeared for the next ten minutes, so I turned the game off.

Not to sound like a jerk, but people don't need to report low turnip prices. :p I think we all know that generally the first 3-4 days are low, and it's only on Thursday/Friday at the earliest will we see high ones. "High" implies over 9000! 300 at the least I'd imagine. I'd always want at least a 3X return on my turnip investment.

Yeah, it don't work that way. Someone dropped one for me and Redd said I simply didn't have one at all. So I figured I'd mail it to one of my kids. When he went there Redd said he had one, but it wasn't sent by a member so he needed to go back and tell me I needed to be a member. DAMN you Redd - I want to be a fucking member but my stupid animals won't give me one (and I talk to them all the time). So, next time anyone gets an invite, MAIL it to someone. Having said that, someone please mail me one ;).

Also, with respect to the paintings, what is this 5000 business? Someone told me while playing that 39,000 bell ones are fake and 40,000 bell ones are real. I really have no idea since I can't get in the damn place :bomb:.

If I didn't see you people posting pictures of Mario items, and mentioning this Pascal and other things I'd say this game is WAY more boring (single-player) than the previous 2. It seems like I never get visits or have special animals show up (which is just magnified by having Redd and Gracie in the city and not your town). But seriously, I haven't had anyone show up except for Sahara once the first couple of days I was playing. There is really nothing to do single-player (at least when I play).

You know, it could be that. I'm surprised you people all still have Nook N Go. I think the problem was that I only had Nook N Go for a few days. He upgraded from that only a day or two after he upgraded from Nook's Cranny. I know it was less than a week inany case. And I may just have not played very often when it was a Nook N Go, though I thought that closed early as well. In any case, I just play with my clock back about 4-5 hours and now I never have to deal with the bastard being closed. It fits my personal style way more anyway. I don't believe any stores anywhere should be open before noon and they should all be open till midnight or later. It makes no sense any other way ;).

FUCK! I had 2 Coelacanth today within the last 2 hours and 40 minutes of fishing and they both got away. Its really annoying. The 2nd one i wiggled my wiimote right after he swallowed the bait and he still got away. What a load of crap. Then after i lose that i end up reeling in fish that are worth crap. Side story: When I was in Japan in August, I went looking for the fabled arcades of Akihabara. I found them, and the treasures they housed were grand indeed - multiple rows of games all latched together like planks on rafts. Inside each I found SFIV machines, which I was somewhat eager to play. Note that this was despite the 100 Yen cost, which means (essentially) a dollar per play. But I sat down and fooled around with it a bit, not understand what any of the menus said (which resulted in me playing a match where my life bar automatically refilled, and my power meter was ALWAYS maxed out).

Anyway I kept choosing various characters, but I noticed something - I was only picking American characters. C. Viper, Ken...there had to have been another (not Guile since I don't like him), but every last one I chose was American. This was not on purpose I assure you.

But I wonder what all the Japanese doods were thinking watching me pick only nationalistic fighters. I must have looked like a total jerk. Which I am, of course, so I guess that's in line with their reasoning.

There are very real horrors to playing this game at night with picture-in-picture technology at your disposal. This was in between Lewis Black segments, which were hilarious, and made the fishing time pass by. I seriously fished for some two plus hours in Io's town that night. It was serene and calming and fun and amusing all at the same time.

Does grass EVER grow back if you stop running entirely? I mean this is kind of stupid. This is a new feature they added (right??) and it really blows. If it NEVER grows back, well, my entire opinion of the game will change. [-(

And where's the turnip hero? Nook will be upgrading tomorrow. His midnight price was 174 but I'm not caving in. On the bright side, with so many upgraded Nook's we should all have silver fishing rods soon.

What the hell. Yesterday Tiffany was saying how she might move, and i told her twice she should move(when i was given the option to save stay, or move). Then last night she was getting back borrowed things. So today she is still here, and i talked to her inside her house. Nothing was packed up, and she acted normal like she didnt say anything about moving. :bomb: So i filed another complaint on her being rude. ERRR.

nooks is closed for renovations today for me. i'm getting a little worried about my turnips. they've had pretty bad prices all week. i don't know if i want to risk it, so i may sell them today somewhere if i can.

i don't believe the snowballs regenerate until the next day. i rolled one pretty good ball, and my other fell into the ocean. so, i assume i'll have to wait until tomorrow to make another snowman.

i saw gulliver today & ran so fast like i stole something from nook's but as soon as i changed my tools he dusted me i tried to cheat & reset the game so i can have another chance but it didn't work :bomb: oh well at least i got my snowman in one try

So how do you get the snowman to be exact?
Build the bottom part until it's as big as it's gonna get and get the top part big, but not completely?

I can't find myself to play this game anymore at all, it's just getting boring now, and it feels quite a chore to actually play. I have nothing to do in the game, sure catch fish, sell, make money, then buy stuff, and blah blah blah.

IMO, The Gamecube Version, the original was the best one so far. The game is basically becoming a game where you are basically forced to go on multiplayer to have true fun, while in the Gamecube Version you could have true fun in single player. Hell, I'd love a local multiplayer but they don't seem to believe in such a thing, where friends and family can play together in the same room and have fun. I can just imagine what this Wiispeak thing will become, it'll become the New Xbox Live community, trash talk here and trash talk there.

Anyway, this game is decently made, however I don't feel the same emotion or feelings for this game in the series as I did in the GC version.

lilboo, I made the bottom snowball big and the top snowball about half the size of the bottom. I made a perfect snowman. I'll post pics later. My town looks like garbage. I hardly have any snow because of the worn dirt areas. Whoever put that element into this game should never make games again. My Mom's town looks amazing. She has snow everywhere complete with the star pattern on the ground. I'm so jealous.

I spent a good amount of time planting new trees, making new layouts.. I hope they all grow though. There were some parts that were too cluttered, and trees in the way of my paths that i made more clear. I dont care about having a perfect town, i just want one that looks nice.

There are plenty of people in this thread talking about how they are enjoying this single player. I'm willing to bet a new wave of players are being introduced to AC and having fun by themselves. You aren't and that's fine, but that doesn't make it so for others. It doesn't help that you clearly played a lot of the GC version, and since we all basically agree this is only a marginally improved version, of course it's going to feel more of the same. But that doesn't mean your conjecture is correct.

Further, I'm having 10x more fun with this version because of the online. No one really did it with the DS version. This is the first version where buying turnips is worthwhile because you are almost guaranteed someone will have high prices somewhere. Additionally I'm having fun sharing pictures and watching the hilarious things happen because of other people visiting.

When Amazon had the $40 bundle, I was annoyed since I'd owned the game for all of two weeks. But then I realized that if I had waited, I'd have missed out on the night I posted about a while ago with Shovel Crew vs Elvis the Lion, and realized that would have been a travesty. Multiplayer isn't a replacement for the single player, it's an extension of the core gameplay and it magnifies it in ways I can't even quantify. It's a truly welcome addition, and while it could be better, it works out very well for what it is.

I played the DS version for 2 years and only went online 1 time to get fruits from some kind soul on the GameFAQ message board.

I don't know how I did it... I was like some sort of crazy mountain man, living out on his own, with no access or knowledge of the rest of the world going on without me.

Yeah I wasn't that into the Gamecube version, I was insanely addicted to the DS version and the addiction is slowly creeping back for this one all because of online play.

i didn't use the ds online more then once or twice. but i wasn't on cag at the time, and i had a hard time finding good people visit.

online does add a ton to the game. it's great visiting towns that have rain/snow or great turnip prices. it makes the world a lot less limited. often times on the ds game, i'd turn on the game, see it wasn't raining and just turn it off. but now i have some options.

that said, without online there is still a lot to do. i've been really enjoying getting my trees perfect so that i can get my golden ax. i caught my first bee today, after many many failures. i had a great time rolling around snowballs.
