should i avoid rolling my snowmen until after i catch a dung beetle?

io

I'm pretty sure the snowballs regenerate in the GC version but you may have to smash both if you mess one up - then they both come back - something like that? I remember being able to make a snowman every day at least - perhaps not a good one, but at least something. And I smashed snowballs all the time then. They better come back as my son broke the first one he saw today...

And lilboo - I agree that the snow not on the ground thing (where it has worn down) is complete ass. The thing is, when my son time travelled it was Dec and he said snow was everywhere. So I'm not sure what happened there. They need to patch (if possible) that wearing down of paths thing and get rid of it - it was a HORRIBLE idea. Or at least they need to make it WAY less sensitive or grow back faster. We have no grass pretty much anywhere we've been more than, like, once. It is ridiculous. It is going to make creating snowmen very hard. Fortunarely I have an alcove of sorts in the middle of the town where nothing really is located and that area is pretty clean. But of course the snowballs will often be up the ramps from there and that makes it harder.

As a little test plot I put down a 2x3 section of flowers in a trampled area and now, a week or so later, I think it is starting to come back. So I guess there's hope that parts can be restored - but you have to stay off of them.

Anyone with decent turnip prices? Anyone? Seems like we had all the great prices last Thurs, so someone's got to have something. I'll check mine in a bit here. I had 150 or so last night and would have taken that in a second if I hadn't seen the 300+ ones posted here last week. Getting greedy will probably cost me this week - and I bought a ton too .

Oh yeah - as for the whole online thing in the DS version, Strell, you missed the boat, man. We had a lot of CAGs playing and I don't remember you being in on that at all. In fact, from the current set of players the only ones I remember are Yukine and Ramstoria. There were a ton of CAGs playing then that don't seem to be into this version, which I find odd... It is really a whole new set of people for the most part. Still, in some ways I thought the DS version was better - way easier to type for one thing and I could play "privately" on the DS instead of the whole family being involved. That definitely made the online portion easier to get into than it is now. Plus I could sit near my wireless router and get a great signal - now it is hit or miss ;).

So wait, the grass does grow back??

Yes. No one said it didn't. If you plant flowers and trees, it'll grow back faster.

I think the idea is that it encourages 1) planting things to achieve a Perfect Town rating, and 2) adds "character" to your town since it'll show that you play a lot.

I'm actually hoping Nintendo will realize that they should release a DLC code variant that applies to the ghost that occasionally appears, and he'll have an option to restore all the grass in your town.

Additionally, if you REALLY wanted, you could make a pattern and put it on the ground to cover everything up, but the problem is that you'll inevitably pick up a lot of them if you try to run. Plus that would take forever and be a total pain in the ass to do, and I'm not even sure you can replicate the design.

I was thinking the same thing about Wisp the ghost. Also, Wendel the Walrus gives you a design that replicates the grass, but it doesn't match it exactly. It's still nice, though. I was using it to cover up the dirt, but I ended up getting annoyed picking it up a lot, and it not feeling authentic! That picture was hilarious, by the way.

I, think... I'll need to do some real experiments - like take pictures before and after and all that. It does seem like it is coming back where I planted some flowers though.

Excerpt about the grass stuff from one of the Iwata asks interviews with the Animal Crossing CF devs.

The surface upon which your characters walk in the Wii version of Animal Crossing is double layered, with a ground layer, and a top layer. The top layer has, for instance grass. This grass can be depleted as you walk, revealing the ground layer.

The game replenishes the grass a little bit at the end of each day, said Kobayashi, but if you were to, for instance, walk every day from your house to a shop.... Iwata finished for him: you'd end up with a trail.
Nougami took it from here. If you were to do nothing but fish, you'd end up with a cleared path from your house to the water. Areas such as bridges, which everyone accesses, have lost their top grass level.

In the case of a mom that likes to fish too much, Iwata suggested that you can discover this by simply following the path from her house. Kyougoku added that you can also use this feature to find a friend's home when visiting a village. There's no need to read a map.

Getting specific, Kobayashi explained that it takes about two weeks of walking before you start seeing a path. For a completely clear path to be formed, said Moro, it will take around two months.

The rate at which the grass grows back depends on the surroundings, explained Kobayashi. If the path is surrounded by grass, and trees, it will grow back faster. Iwata joked here that the game has assumed the element of a plant simulation.

The rest of page two of the interview session had the four joking about players potentially feeling lonely when they see the paths remaining around the homes of people who've left their village. With time, these paths will grow back and your memories of that animal will fade. Eventually, the grass will be in full growth, and you'll have forgotten who lived there.

Yeah, that path thing all sounds wonderful as described in that quote but I think they screwed up and it is "turned up" way too much. The grass gets ground down so much you really can't see any specific paths any more. The idea of a path forming a in very heavily trafficked areas is a decent one but it is simply overdone. You can't see any single path to anywhere in my town except the obvious places (down the ramps and along the river). The rest of the areas are just patchy mixes of grass and ground.

Nooks was closed for me today as well, so I spent the day unloading bushels of my native pears at Jason's while stocking up on his bountiful cherries. Then popped into visit Alex at Mordor, who was having a free for all at the gate. Thanks to him, I FINALLY have a closet to keep some of my junks in. Thanks Alex!!

Rounded it out with a brief visit with Becky, Romeo, and Janet. Can't remember who's town it was. I was busy getting my turnip monies together for Sunday.

So many good people in here....my experience with this game only gets better and better every day. And now that school is finally out, I can REALLY get down like I want too!

Hey Becky, it was always my understanding in the GC game that you should make the head about half the size of the body. In that picture it looks nearly the same size! I was finally able to track down both snowballs and make one and it was close according to the snowman himself, but not quite perfect. I definitely had the head smaller in relation to the body though.

Also, I confirmed that the snowballs do regenerate if you break them (or push them in the river). I remembered in the GC game if you lost one you wouldn't get another and had to break the second one. i could be wrong on that, but for the life of me I couldn't find the second one but my son thought he had broken one earlier. So I just pushed the one I had into the river and went around and found two new ones. It may help to go in and out of a house or Nook's or something to get them to regenerate though - just to be safe. Sometimes those bastards are hard to find (one was behind my house and I just happened to run into it).

In the GC game you could build a new one every day and the old ones will stick around for a few days before melting. So make a family of deformed snowmen if you like ;).

I think if you go to their house and just keep nagging them the option will appear. I had Clyde in my town, and wanted him to leave. He started talking about leaving, and i felt guilty and asked him to stay, but it only took a week for him to pack it all up again.

Speaking of neighbors- how long do they stay sick for in this game? I had to get Cookie medicine 3 days in a row.. I was starting to think she had AIDS.

Also, is there any way to stop a neighbor from moving out of town in this one like in WW?

I remember in WW that you'd go into someone's house and they'd have everything in boxes, and you'd have to talk to them for a good ten minutes telling them to stay before they'd change their mind. You'd have to go through all these conversations, usually repeating, until one real specific option came up, and when you said to stay to THAT particular one, the neighbor would get a ! over their head and finally say something to the tune of, "Oh gee you really do want me to stay, huh?"

As for this game, the only time I've seen someone think about moving is precursored by them alerting me. You know when you run around and occasionally a neighbor gets a ! above their head and makes a little sound, and then they run up to you and wait until you acknowledge them? They've done this to me a few times now when they are thinking about moving. But I tell them not to and they change their minds instantly.

So - so far - whenever one of them thinks about it, they definitely tell me, and it only seems to take one "don't go" response to get them to stay. Which I personally prefer since in WW if you screwed it up once, they'd be outta there. I have yet to go into someone's house and see them boxed up.

In the GC version, could you even stop people from moving? Or was it completely out of the blue? I remember just getting letters declaring they were gone, no rhyme or reason or warning.

This reminds me: I really like how they fixed the problem where a neighbor wanted to talk to you, but you'd walk into Nook's and screw up the meeting. Now they sit outside Nook's and wait for you to come out! That is a tiny thing but it's brilliant that they included it.

I haven't had one come to my place, but I did go to their's once after we'd set a time.

Can you get the villagers portraits again like in WildWorld? :-s

Do they also set times to come over your house and chill with you?

The animals usually ask you if they can come check your place out and you pick the time also I'm not sure on portraits, but I think there's none on gamefaqs and a animal crossing fansite forum people been saying there is none..

Yea- the "plant a tree" thing was my charm for December, didn't know what it would do though. I've got to attend an office Xmas party, so i won't be home, but i'll open my gates before i leave. I probably won't be on until about 6.

Feel free to plant a tree but do it AWAY FROM NOOKS! Preferably, cut down a preexisting one, and replace it, but i don't really care. There might still be a stump or 2 hanging around you can take care of too.

I haven't had one come to my place, but I did go to their's once after we'd set a time.

I think we fumbled around and he kept saying IF YOU FIND ANY SNACKS DON'T EAT THEM.

Actually, I sincerely think the game totally forgot all about it. I walked into the house and I don't remember them really giving two craps I was there.

I visited a neighbor's house during the agreed upon time. They'll welcome you when you walk in. After you talk to them a few times, they'll let you buy a piece of furniture in their house similar to flea market day. They won't offer to sell everything though. I tried to buy a gyroid, but Dotty said it was her lucky piece of furniture at the moment (or some other excuse), so she wouldn't sell it to me. After I bought one piece of furniture, it wouldn't let me ask about buying anything else.

I keep missing the times when animals want to come over to my house, so I don't know how that works in this game compared to WW.

I played hide and seek, and won. Got some kind of wallpaper.
Found a scallop to give that otter. He gave me a Keg. Took a while though, had to pick up all the other shells and sell them, finally a scallop showed up.
Someone wanted me to catch them a tuna, so i said no. LOL
Another person wanted a barbel steed so i said yes and caught that one pretty fast.
I wonder if you say you will catch something like a tuna, if they will be more popular to catch. Then you could catch a bunch and sell most and give one to the person who wanted one. Just an idea. I only caught 2 or 3 in my AC lifetime.

Shit.........I wish I was here for yesterday, and Ill have to TT for the fishing tourney, but fuck, it's pure shit over here. Last night central MA got hit with an ice storm, trees are all over the place, and power lines all over the ground. 300,000 homes are out of power in MA. The governor says the earliest for places is monday, but my area got hit so hard Im not going to school next week I think. Im writing this from my uncles to say why I might not be on for a while, and that Im going to have my gates open all night (though it will appear right after 6 EST then) starting in a few hours. Im also putting all of the stuff I dont want at the gate, and have a full orchard and fountain going. Hope to see you there, my OP will be updated later (sorry :( ) and I have a lot to shit to deal with. I will be on the computer though, and on CAG, until morning.

lilboo
12-14-2008, 03:46 AM
7th, they don't ALWAYS hybrid. Make sure they are watered.

Also, to better your chances, put them together diagonally.
For example if you were to do 2 flowers.
X = Space
F = Flower

FXX
XFX

And so on, and so forth. This gives more room for a hybrid to appear. ALSO, they have to be the same breed of flower ;)

Keep in mind, not all the colors mix. Red in all flowers will merge with other 2 colors. Yellow and White, however, don't always go with each other OR 2 yellows or 2 whites. There's a guide online about what colors will make what for each breed of flower.

The roses are whats up.You get a lot of different color and you can even hybrid the hybrids :D

Yay - I won my fishing tourney with a 46.5 inch Sea Basstard. For once when I was ACTUALLY looking for Sea Bass they were hard to find though :bomb:.

One of the animals had a 43 inch one and I kept getting within less than an inch until finally I got one that went way over. I also had a Tuna in reserve that I would have dropped in there at the last minute if I didn't find a big enough Sea Bass. I got the record with about 10 minutes to spare and just kept bugging the guy to make sure no one beat me out ;).

During the fishing, though, I missed a rare fish. I say it is rare because it took the first bite and despite my being pretty quick on the reelin' in, it took off. It was slightly smaller than a sea bass. What could that have been? (It was in the ocean and it was not snowing so for sure it wasn't a Coelacanth).

So I bought a measly 200 Turnips this morning for a little over 20,000 bells (103 each). I could buy more, but I don't want to shake down trees because I'm currently trying to grow some. I'm hoping to get at least 60,000 bells out of this investment, maybe 80,000. I've pretty much figured out that you have a 100% chance of growing a tree in this game as long as you don't step over it at all while on its' first day. After that, you're gold.

I also bought a Red Turnip, but I forgot how long those stay alive for.

I used to do that with turnips in AC:WW. I'd put 9 bunches of turnips out in front of the town hall where special characters would show up. Then once a special character visited the turnips would be put in the lost & found where they'd never spoil. It was a great way to hold low priced turnips until Nook had a good buying price. Since Redd came to town once a week in WW, I always had a chance to get my turnips in the lost & found.

I don't know if they'll never spoil in AC:CF's lost & found. I haven't had a chance to try it out since it's kind of rare when characters set up their structures in front of the town hall.

In wild world that happened when the DS time and the game time were desynched. Is your Wii set to a different day? It could also result in Nook never buying turnip for a high price.
--
edit:
Maybe it is the result of time traveling? I just tested this, kind of. My AC clock is 13 minutes behind (Wii time was off when I first started the game. I set the game to the correct time then, but when I went back and set the Wii to the correct time, it caused the AC clock to be off by that much). Well I turned on the game and asked Joan for red turnips, she had some. I saved and then set the AC clock ahead 13 minutes to the correct time and talked to her again. She said, "welcome back" but then she said she was sold out of red turnips

They say to always time travel by changing the console's clock and not the in game clock, because then bad things start happening. But I didn't want my Wii and AC clock to be set to different times. That could cause unwanted things to happen too. We'll see if this is permanent #-o

Interesting. My son is playing and found Joan and yeah, no red turnips. My white ones are 104 too... I guess I just missed going to other people's towns, too, unless they have it set up differently.

Yeah, in AC:WW I would set the DS clock. In this one I'm setting the AC clock. I'm not really time travelling, just keeping it a few hours behind so Nook isn't always closed when I play at night. I suppose I could just change the Wii clock and sync them up. I mean, who the heck cares if the Wii clock is off by 2 hours .

I'll try that before I play and see if that makes Joan sell the red turnips after my son was denied.

If you want to upload them, they get saved in a folder on the card that any PC could read via an SD card reader. Then you'd transfer them to a service like Photobucket or whatever to have them hosted online.

If anyone remembers my last fishing tournament, it was a smashing success. Everyone came home with prizes (winner getting rainbow feather and 75k), and I decided I wanted to do it again. I'm scheduling this baby on the 31st at an unspecified time EST. Ive wanted to do something for the CAGcrossing holidays, and I think I've finally found something that everyone will enjoy:

CAGxing Mega Million New Years Fishing Tournament

The thing about this tournament (fish catching) is that you actually have to win your way into being a part of this tournament. But why do you even want to be a part of it? It will probably have 1 stupid prize, an Ok prize, and a slightly-above-average prize. Right? Wrong. You see, the thing about this one is that this one has prizes that you actually want, with my third place prize actually surpassing my 1st place cash prize of my last tourney. You see, the prizes are:

3rd Place: 150,000 bells
2nd Place: Midna's Mask

And it wouldn't be a "Mega Million" tourney without a first prize of:
1,000,000 bells. That's right. 1,000,000 bells.

But how can you get such a prize? You have to enter by December 26th at 11:59pm EST And it only applies to people in the OP by December 20th at 11:59pm EST (If you sent me an add since then, and haven't been added, you are eligible as well). "Winner's" will be announced December 29th and the tournament takes place December 31st at an unspecified time (for now) EST. I will select randomly, and there is no entry fee. You enter by PMing me that you wish to be entered, and you will be entered.

edit: In OP now

Haven't started yet. For the axes, Im rotating between a thursday and friday, the two best days, so there is bound to be something good coming up.

If your going to TT, why not just deposit all your money in the bank and TT way into the future and back. Collect the interest.

Because 1 year and 1 day is a big difference in terms of weeds

Well, I set my Wii clock and AC clock to be the same (just 2 hours less than real time). I'll leave it there for the week and see what happens. But after I got back in the game Joan still said she was sold out of red turnips. Maybe it is because she first appeared when the clocks were out of sync - so I'll have to see what happens next Sunday.

Can someone explain the golden axe thing to me? What is this with fountains and time travelling and Thurs/Fri being good days? I guess it isn't like the DS game where you had to trade a red turnip to someone and trade what they gave you to someone else, etc, etc...

Fountain: Unlocked after you donate 500,000 after getting the bridge (750,000 total)

Gold/Silver axe: Throw an axe in (once a day), and you have a small chance of getting one of these axes.

TT: Time traveling-used to get axe speedily

Thursday and Friday being good days: Refers to turnip selling. These days are almost always the turnip high point and if I rotate the axe chances to some chances CAGs can get great selling points, everyone wins

If you throw an axe in and it doesnt turn it silver or gold, do you at least get it back?

PS i tried to throw it into i think Tom from Memphis' fountain and it wouldnt let me.

She can take the axe away too. It all depends on luck, how you answer her questions, and some sort of karma thing I don't quite understand yet.

Ah, thanks - you had me confused there with all the axe/turnip discussion mixed up ;). It will be a while before I get a fountain, unless someone comes through with 500 bell turnips this week. Even so, I only bought 800 or so, so I won't make that much - will pay off my upstairs. I want to do the house first before donating to the town fund.

In other news, my kids made a snowman today. Oh yeah, not in the game, but in real life ;). Around here they only get to do this once every 3 years or so.

Strell - that's the noisy one there ("The Beatles rock! The Who rock!", etc...)
