Looks like Bethesda might be bringing a new Elder Scrolls (ES V) in 2010. I would say this has been in development for at least a few years, most likely started right after the release of Oblivion.

I'm psyched for a new ES since Oblivion is in my list of top 5 favorite games.

Fallout 3 publisher Bethesda has indicated that the next title in the hugely popular Elder Scrolls series will be released in 2010.
Paul Oughton, publishing executive for Bethesda, also said that although the market for the Wii and DS has opened up more varied publishing opportunities, the company doesn't have any current plans to release titles for Nintendo consoles.
"At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010," said Oughton. "At the moment we're not that interested in the Wii. We're going to stick to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. We'll continue to pursue three or four titles a year and go for big titles," he said of the company's publishing plans for the future.
Oughton acknowledged that Nintendo has done a great job of expanding the games market to a mass audience, but he also expects that it will soon reach saturation point.
"We've seen games selling in the past 18 months that we never thought we'd see. We wouldn't have thought that pet games and cooking games would have a viable market five years ago. No publisher would have taken those products on," he said.
"But Nintendo bought new products in with vast amounts of marketing money to launch these into the minds of the consumer and made a market for them. Every other publisher then very quickly developed DS and Wii products and we're getting to saturation now."

UPDATE: Credit to eswat; it seems that the new ES may possibly take place in Skyrim, a land of the Nords

Sweet.

One of my top games of all time. I remember when i bought Arena how it said it was the first game in a trilogy... so much for that.

So, let me understand this:
Elder Scrolls 4 = Fallout 3, but with no guns. ;)

Sounds great, as long as the game is about the same as oblivion I will be happy, since Oblivion is probably my favorite RPG as of now.

YES!

I was wondering if they had started on a new one. i hope they don't dumb it down as much as Oblivion though, a little less complicated than Morrowind sure, but please no more "click to fast travel" or "weapon X does 7 damage" BS

Then you need to play Fallout 3, which is easily better than Oblivion. ;)

I make a bet right now that the next ES is delayed until XBox 720 gets released, 2011 at the earliest. It just makes sense, since Oblivion was a showcase when the 360 got released, that they'd want to really upgrade the next game and take the graphics and AI beyond what the 360 can do.

I have F3 but I think Oblivion beats it :D

What an unnessary and off topic attack on Nintendo. -1 for Paul Oughton, publishing Executive for Bethsoft. Though I'd feel pretty sour if my only previous games published on a Nintendo console in the last 15 years were Star Trek: Conquest, and Star Trek: Tactical Assault.

Its like he's channeling Mark Rein.

With regard to ES, I hope they make it playable on the PC without modding the interface away from console conventions.

Pfft, it's just going to be Fallout 3 with swords.

On a serious note, the game is called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, so it's going to be a Nord campaign. Awesome.

I think they need to remake the Arena game ES1. Maybe they are waiting of the next generation of consoles to do that I know a bunch of people missed it and its a great game.

Maybe if they did a complete overhaul and added swing control to replicate what they did with the mouse back then.

Eitherway its great news.
