shrike, I'm with you. I don't think GF renters are any different than any other renters in their treatment of discs, and on top of that it goes through the mail. You may get a pristine one, but you are more likely to get what you would expect of a disc that's gone through the mail and scratched up by multiple users.

Poor Shrike. I don't know how you've gotten so many bad discs consistently. I guess I've been lucky, out of 5 or so orders, every game I've gotten looks absolutely pristine.

Are you mainly getting 360 games? PS3 games seem much more scratch-resistant than any other optical disc (PS2, GC, Xbox, DVDs, etc), which might be a part of it.

360 has twice the user base, as well, so maybe the 360 games get rented more often by default, thus increasing the odds of them being craptacular?

For those worried about bad discs, here is my experience as a GF member. I have used their service over a year, now. In that time, I have bought about 10 games and gotten probably about 50 through renting. Every, single disc worked. Some were in rough shape, but they worked. So, that's like 60 discs that all worked. Yeah, it's a drop in the bucket when considering the discs they send out in the year, but one would think that, if there was a good chance of getting a bad disc, I would have gotten one by now.

Yeah, I went through receiving really, really crappy looking discs when I bought Burnout Paradise. I returned one and told them it was because it was in terrible shape and got one that was in worse shape. Hopefully no one rented Alone in the Dark though. That may explain the 5.99 price tag.

I just started playing it today and I'm on chapter 3.
Let me say one thing: controls break this game.
I don't know how much they can "patch" the controls outside of re-working them a lot.

The camera is bad but I've seen worst. If they could fix the controls and camera I would say the game is a 6, but till then It's a 4 or 5.
Graphics for the cutscenes are great and the achivements are manageable. Oh, and it's still better then the movie of course (enjoyment wise).

For $6 however you can't really go wrong especially if they do patch it.

I just started playing it today and I'm on chapter 3.
Let me say one thing: controls break this game.

The controls are a joke. And driving is an epic mess. Whereas I enjoy driving the length of an island in a GTA game, because the driving can be a lot of fun, it's an absolute chore trying to get to one end of the park to the other in this game. It doesn't help when the car shrugs off running into some trees, but then you run over a 6 inch curb, and the thing blows up.

Psp game UMDs with split casings that have the disc inside rattling when it plays in my psp.

Even though the reviews were ehhh, I've been wanting AITD since it came out. But I also knew there's no way I'd pay $60 for it. GameStop has it for $35, and even that is too much. So $6 is fine.

I also read a while back about a patch. The latest I read however is that they are saying they will release a patch if the PS3 version sells better than the 360; however I read that second hand on a message board so it may or may not be true. To me if the game needs a patch, regardless of how bad it sold, they should release one.

Yep, the anti scratch coating on PS3 disks is a modern marvel. I still don't have a single bluray disk with a scratch on it. I look at my 360 disks funny and the next thing you know they're all scratched up. I love bluray for that feature alone.

Ordered my copy of AITD on the 19th, it shipped out on the 20th, received the game today. Case is like brand new as usual, and the disc looks nearly brand new as well, no noticeable scratches on the surface at all.

I got my AitD yesterday and it looks great but I haven't played it yet. I'll tackle that this weekend when I have beer. lol

My copy arrived today. Box is in great shape, disc is in pretty good shape; it's not brand new but only a few light signs of use. Game plays great....well...in the sense that the disc plays fine. The game itself...well I've only played about 10 minutes so hard to tell. I've read the horror stories about the controls.

oh and thanks Nightmare for the tip about the not blinking. I got the achievement first try.

Sounds like you're being kind of impatient. 2-4 weeks is usually a pretty standard shipping time for USPS, sometimes even longer, depending where you are. Obviously your shipping time should be much less than 4 weeks, but I'd say give it at least a week and a half to two weeks before you start causing a fuss.

Well after playing it a while I'm REALLY glad I only paid $6 for this game. It's one of those games that has some great ideas, but my goodness the controls are so clunky. I'm up to the driving sequence.....and this part just plain is awful. Horrible controls, a very weird hit detection where it seems the smallest thing makes your car stop (which allows you to die) and on top of that, there's random cars coming at you that can crash into you and die. And not only are the controls clunky, they are also randomly unresponsive. Like I'm pressing the right trigger for the car to go and it won't go.

Geez, payiing anything more than $6 for this game is a ripoff. I REALLY hope they are going to release the much rumored patch.

I normally don't do stuff like this, but this game is bringing my piss to a boil. This driving sequence is one of th worst parts of any game I have ever played. Not only is the control absolutely piss poor and randomly unresponsive like I said before, but things just happen randomly in the course of the drive that you have absolutely NO control over that cause you to die and there is nothing you can do about it.

Example, one part of the drive you jump over a gap, it does a quick cutscene flip and you land on the other side and have to keep going. Well sometimes when I land, when I the ground, I flip. I have no control over that, and doing that is certain death because the freakin thing chasing me catches me. I have no time to recover. Later you have to go through a very specific tunnel like gap in a fallen buidling. Same time thing, sometimes a car is blown up in the air near that and the freakin thing LANDS on me as I exit the gap. Again, I have no control over that, and going fastter or slower wouldn't help nor could I manuever around it. It stops me, I die.

And that doesn't even cover if you actually do keep going without getting hit (and not hit at all, any slight hit screws you), but towards the end (I guess it's the end, I haven't gotten there), you have no idea where to go and you have about 2 seconds to decide. So good luck if you mess up because it's death and you start over all the way at the start.

Whoever greenlit this game with the control and camera problems should be kicked in the nuts.

Yeah I was a bit ticked last night when I wrote that. I finally got past it on about my 50th try, and after I looked up videos on it on YouTube. But I found an even better problem. Towards the end of this part you crash through a window and land back out on the street. The game is so glitchy that many times as you go to land, the freakin' road hasn't loaded yet, so you just fall into nothingness and die. Luckily on the YouTube video I had been warned, so you as soon as you see it hasn't loaded, you pause the game and that let's the game "catch up".

I might be a little harsh; the rest of the parts have actually been ok and some of the stuff where you figure things out is actually kind of cool. But overall this game still needed a lot of work before they released it.

never played any of them. i'm just getting started on my first "real" console experience (not sure that either the wii or the NES count for this definition) and coming from a decade and a half of PC gaming, this sort of game intrigues me.

in fact as of last night, i'm now knee-deep in heavenly sword and loving every minute of it. from some of the things i've heard (and what amazon's psychic recommendation robots have told me) i would probably also enjoy DMC4. thoughts? you a fan of HS?

I played and loved both. I think if you enjoyed HS you'd enjoy DMC4, although it is a bit harder and longer. And if you're really up for a challenge, give Ninja Gaiden Sigma a spin. The story/presentation on it are pretty poor compared to HS or DMC4, but the pure action element is fairly deep and challenging.
