http://www.isitinhd.com/ <----- It was bound to happen. A blog dedicated to HD Movies.

Apparently if you are an early NXE user, you should be able to find the movies here: Watch Instantly>Genres>HD or Watch Instantly>Genres>HD

After doing some reading on the highly anticipated Netflix feature, Ive found that apparently there is no indicator telling a user if a movie/show has HD streaming capabilities.

There's also one other problem. Those 300 or so HD movies (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55624) aren't labeled as such, so there's no way to know if a video will be in HD until it starts buffering and that little "Presented in HD" icon pops up.I figured we can generate a list for the time being until this is solved. Please reply with any known HD movies or Shows. I really want to load up my Instant Queue with all the HD content possible.

Notes:

Mods feel free to update/delete this thread. I can't constantly update every minute, but Ill do my best.
You do not need maximum bars to watch HD and when I get HD streams, they're 3 out of the 4 bars with a little grey into the fourth, assuming that means anything. However when I watch season 3 of the office (which is HD), some episodes will be 4 bars DVD (No "Presented in HD" message and it doesn't look as good as the HD ones) while others are 3 bars HD. For me it seems to be pretty sporadic, like all the episodes either aren't HD or the streaming quality requires more bandwith on those particular episodes. - Draekon
4 bars is maximum regardless of quality. The only way you know you're watching the HD version is via the "Presented in HD" message. While you may choose an HD film, you may get the DVD version because your connection is too slow. - Draekon
My 'resolution' on my 360 is set to 1920x1080 and I can't change it for whatever reason through my VGA cables. My television probably won't accept anything lower via VGA for whatever reason and I don't plan to try my component cables anytime soon to check to see if I can get those non-HD episodes via 720p or 1080i. - Draekon

Tips:

1) Get an account with Netflix if you don't already have one.
2) Download Netflix from the Video Marketplace and run it.
3) Go to www.netflix.com/activate (http://www.netflix.com/activate) while signed in and throw in the key the 360 generates when you run Netflix on the 360
4) Add anything from watch instantly on the netflix website and then it'll be on your 360 to stream automatically
5) Choose the video on your 360 from the Netflix app and it'll run the video with the picture quality based off of your download speed.

So is there any way to tell just by checking netflix.com or something? Will i see an 'HD' symbol on the site or on my 360 when i go to watch a movie?

As of now, neither. The only way of telling will be to play the movie and see that way. I doubt it lasts long though. For now we can make a list.

When playing 30 Rock, the "presented in HD" logo never shows up.

Does that mean my connection isn't strong enough?

There's a HD section under genres at the watch instantly section on netflix's site.

Also King of Kong is one of the HD movies.

Odd, its not working...Are you already using Netflix with your 360. I ask because I am not yet and maybe this feature is available to 360 users.

The list is still nice to have for those who don't have Netflix and want to know if it's worth the trouble. That is if they're only interested in watching stuff from the HD selection. Granted the DVD streamable selection isn't that great either.

Easily the best section, but most of the good movies on there I've seen multiple times already and I don't really feel like I need to subscribe to watch them again.

My two week trial will be enough for me to watch everything I want from the streamable side of Netflix.

Are they going to continually add new movies/TV shows? I really hope it is similar to Video on Demand with comcast, where as soon as a new movie is released on DVD you can watch it. Also, they add new episodes of TV shows about a week after they come out. Southpark is released a week after it airs on TV. Will netflix be similar? I sure hope so!

Wish I could say, but what I know is that new releases are not on the streamable listings. Don't know when or if it will change, but if they do change it to work like that then I'd definitely consider signing on to Netflix.

Since this is stickied, I noticed the opening post has been updated so I'll make a couple things clear:

Apparently if you are an earlt NXE user, you should be able to find the movies here: Watch Instantly>Genres>HD or Watch Instantly>Genres>HD

The way you list to find them are both the same. :P

If you don't get HD or don't see the "Presented in HD" logo, check your connection. It is likely that 1-2 bars will yield SD and 4-5 will yield HD.

4 bars is maximum regardless of quality. The only way you know you're watching the HD version is via the "Presented in HD" message. While you may choose an HD film, you may get the DVD version because your connection is too slow.

As far as I know that's the way it works for everyone. Although I do not know if you can give an activation key to someone else with a netflix account and be able to stream their instant watch stuff through your 360.

Netflix on your 360 is a very small download (a few megabytes) and it's accessible from the NXE Dashboard (but it's listed under Video Marketplace).

You can't go there via your 360 as there's no web browser, so it's definitely on the PC.

You need the randomly generated code from your 360, so it must be on to get the code. I don't believe that code lasts very long and it then asks you to input it at the netflix website while signed into your account.

You just need the PC on to activate it the first time. After that you don't need it on to watch movies on the X-box. You do have to use the PC to add stuff to your instant queue.

And yes, otherwise it's more or less the same thing as that Roku box they've had out for a while (not years, instant watch hasn't been around years much less the box), only it costs nothing for people with a 360 who already had a Netflix account.

fraggedbylaggers
11-19-2008, 12:36 PM
why do you need to use the computer at all for the queue? It really makes no sense at all. Aside from that this is a pretty nice feature. IDK if I am going to cancel my trial or not. If me and my roommate split the cost it would be less than 5 bucks a month...

dmaul1114
11-19-2008, 01:21 PM
No web browser on the 360, so thus no way to log into your netflix account to add stuff to the Queue.

I'd never cancel mine, but of course I've had netflix for a couple years and usually watch more movies than I play games. Thought that's been flipped around lately.

Queues are two lists per account, which are DVD (Mail Rentals) and Watch Instantly (Streamable). So if they actually use the Watch Instantly, what they add and what you add would be apart of the same list. If they don't use it, then you really have no problem if you stick to Watch Instantly and they stick to DVD.

That's great! They don't use Watch Instantly ever, I doubt they even know they can.

No web browser on the 360, so thus no way to log into your netflix account to add stuff to the Queue.

I'd never cancel mine, but of course I've had netflix for a couple years and usually watch more movies than I play games. Thought that's been flipped around lately.

it seems like it would be pretty easy to have a program that lets you log onto netflix and queue it online.

Probably, but it's easier to search and navigate on the PC with a keyboard/mouse anyway than if you had to do it with a 360 controller.

I don't mind as I'm constantly adding stuff to my DVD queue online anyway, so no biggie to do the instant watch queue that way as well.

I kind of doubt the instant watch will be worth a subscription alone to you anytime in the near future, if you don't think it's current worth it..

What it is is a nice, free bonus for those of us who want the DVD (and/or Blu Ray) rentals and subscribe just for that. I'd never go without Netflix after having it for a few years, but for me movies>>>>>>>games.

Yes that's fine. Also, I don't see why everyone is complaining about the current HD offering. First off, HD streaming was barely introduced and it's only exclusively available to Xbox 360 owners which sucks for PC owners who are dying to get this. Plus we know they'll be updating these with newer titles.

the initial offering of HD titles is a little on the weak side but i am still very stoked for this. Netflix already offers a good selection of SD instant view titles and now I can watch on the big screen instead of on my crappy monitor! And they will only offer more in the future.

I couldn't find the answer on the site. Netflix says DVDs should arrive within 1 business day, but are their business days Monday-Friday? Some places include Saturday. Obviously there's no mail on Sundays.

dmaul1114
11-20-2008, 08:31 PM
They don't ship on Saturdays (I don't think anyway) but you can get movies on Saturdays since the mail runs.

For instance, I mailed back a movie today, they'll get it tomorrow and I'll get my next movie on Saturday.

But if I'd mailed it on Friday, they wouldn't process the return until Monday and I wouldn't get my next movie until Tuesday since they're centers don't work on Saturdays to process returns/ship out new movies.

You don't have to have them on at the same time. Just get the code from the 360, write it down, get your computer online, enter the code on the site, and you're set. Add as many movies and TV shows as you want to your queue (I have 93 now) and then you can connect your 360 to the modem and stream away.

Unfortunately some ISPs like Comcast and AT&T are doing something called 'throttling' where they lower your bandwidth when they feel you are using too much of it. Of course these companies also have a convenient conflict of interest because they want you to pay for their cable TV services... If you are having problems where streaming was working great but then got worse over some period of time, it could be this reason.

Does Verizon FIOS do this? I have 10mps down (ran speed tests to confirm) and I get the "connection has slowed" message. Also, some shows like The Office don't have each episode in HD. It'll tell me I have four bars but not say "Presented in HD"

I'm wondering about this too. I was jazzed enough to trade some old stuff in at GS last weekend on a nearly new used 360 to have just for the Netflix deal in another part of the house. I'm waiting on a 20G HD to arrive this week to update to NXE so I haven't been able to try and see if it would work or if I would need another account.

What the fuck? Netflix removed Team America, which had it's "expiration date" taken off several weeks ago. More importantly, Blade Runner never had a date to be taken off and it's gone now from instant streaming. I wanted to see that, but elected to watch the "expiring" movies first.

On a happier note, An Evening With Kevin Smith 2 was set to expire, but didn't.

It has its moments. There's alot of streaming content BUT there's alot that's not streaming. There are alot of titles that are obscrue and alot of the new content is missing. What I mean is your not going to get all the new releases streaming every tuesday. Though It is pretty cool to be able to pull up "any" movie you want and watch it. Heads up on some of the tv seasons, the ones I have wanted to watch, a few of the episodes are "for rental only" which is really annoying why they would upload the whole season but 3 random episodes, doesnt make sense.

Video quality is around sd cable quality (for movies not in HD), last night I dont know what happened, it kept on adjusting to my internet strength to the point where it looked like i was stretching a youtube video across the screen (5mb connection). That was the only time it has done that.

I would advise you to scan the title avaliable to stream and see if its worth it for you.

It's best not to go in thinking that you'll be able to find a certain movie to watch, but instead just browse through the instant movies and add them to your queue and watch them when you feel like it.

It is nice for watching TV episodes. Heroes, Office, and others are on there. So, watching through XBL/Netflix is easier than hooking up my Laptop to the TV to watch the episodes when I miss them during the week.

The selection is alright, it would keep you occupied in the 1st couple of months.. They have all seasons of CSI, Numb3rs, Heroes.. great selection of Animes..

Just remember you have to have GOLD membership in order to stream netflix, so add that to the cost unless you already use gold for multiplayer.

My only real complaint is there does not seem to be a lot of consistently added titles.
