So...What was the Deal of the Day? Apparently its sold out...but what was it?
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207586
14 days without a purchase. some good deals... but lots of filler. i'm really surprised many BF titles didn't resurface. amazon gets less of my money, as i'm much ess likely to bite on those borderline purchases. my hats' off to amazon for BF... but way to kill a buzz
Microshock
12-16-2008, 12:53 AM
This isn't a great deal unless you're getting it for the 360. Newegg has the ps3 version for 40 bucks and in most places, you'll have no tax and it's free shipping.
Amazon just isnt that good without prime...

I really wonder what the point of having midnight/3am releases for sales items are when the items are more 'casual' in nature and aimed at a younger audience.
I mean, I can understand when you have a midnight launch for say World of Warcraft or Metal Gear, what with the huge fan following, but a midnight sale launch for Block Party?
Maybe I'm just not seeing the business strategy, but I think this is bordering on a waste of everyone's time.

Amazon ends with...a quiet fart. Great job.
*goes to walk dog & then watch Recess at 4am on Toon Disney*
All this got me was Left 4 Dead. I'm a huge Amazon fan, and this has left me disappointed. They clearly were just trying to get rid of games people didn't really want. The Banjo and Saints Row deals were solid too, but I have so many games I still need to play that the time I would get to those they'll be cheaper then what the deals were.
Aw, hate to crap on this promo, but it did kind of go out with a whimper. And OD 360 was $19.96 a good week before BF. :p

well at least it's over. the 4 or so games i was on the lookout for will not translate into amazon sales. by the time i'm ready to buy, i'll have whittled that down to 1 or 2, and won't pay more than $30. i guess it's better for me in the end... but serious buzz kill.

Maybe I'm just not seeing the business strategy, but I think this is bordering on a waste of everyone's time.
.. the sales go on for the full 24 hours.
What would be the point of having a period of time with no sale? (the deal being sold out excluded)
Also, it may be a shock to some, but some people in this world live in different time zones beyond Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern. What's midnight / 3am for you, is not the same for some others.
Yes, there are different Amazon subsets for different areas (Amazon.uk, Amazon.jp), but American's who use .com still travel, so it makes sense to start deals at the first hour of the day.
No one says you have to stay up late to be the first person to see the sale, just check it when you wake up in the morning.
Also.. games aimed at a younger audience are (most) times purchased by parents, including the adults that may get home late from work. Since you know.. they have access to the credit card and buy gifts for they're younger ones for Christmas.
There isn't much to really wonder about, but being bitter about staying up late for nothing on the other hand.. ^ ^
That aside, the 15 days were a disappoint for me, but after Black Friday, I thank Amazon for going easy on my wallet. I've spent far too much already this month. Especially when combined with EBay's cash back.

So ok I'll admit, there was a bit of annoyance in my post, though it wasn't for staying up that late (I was up studying anyway), but I guess it was more annoyance in anticipation of what *I* (which I know is subjective) wanted to be a "great games deal", and not "Block Party", with all due respect to Block Party.
But seriously though, why start a 24 hour sale at midnight PST? I'm just curious, I don't know anything about online sales. Why not say start it at 8am or 9am EST? Wouldn't you catch more people that way?
And yes, thanks for the geography lesson, I know that other people in the world live in other time zones, I'm actually a foreign student studying in the US. But I'm assuming that the majority of Amazon.com's target audience is based in the US.
And what do you mean by "first hour of the day"? Whose day? Those in PST time zones? Why should they get preference? I'm confused, you're saying that time is relative (which I acknowledge), but you also say that midnight PST is the "first hour of the day", which is a PST-centered view.

No. If the sale starts at midnight and goes for 24 hours, then it will obviously still be up at 8am or 9am EST to catch all the people you're talking about. The only way it wouldn't is if it's sold out already, in which case they already hit their max anyway.

I'm annoyed about PoP, though. Amazon always does this. I pre-ordered the game (great game, by the way) for full price and got their $10 gift card, but then a week after it was out, it dropped $10, and now they've got a deal on it. Annoying.
I really am going to just stop pre-ordering. Even if they have the giftcards, they usually have a better deal a mere week or two after it's out.

POP is tempting -- but you know, I've spent so much money so far this season on games that I haven't touched, I'm embarrassed for myself, so rather than buy the game, I donated some more to Child's Play.

I'm still sore that I bought the Tales game for full price. I wish I waited. I wonder if I should get a second copy... it doesn't seem as though it's all that "limited" but then again plenty of games have had semi-long windows of opportunity to purchase before their value shot through the roof.

BF:BC and MKvsDCU are both really tempting, but there's already a ridiculous amount of new games coming into my house this Christmas. Plus, my ever-growing backlog still has unplayed games in it from last Christmas.
Amazon is making it really difficult to stop spending money this year.

Dang, I'm tempted by that Mortal Kombat game too...it would be the first I've ever bought. No idea why I kind of want it. I should probably pick up Prince of Persia, though I run into the "which format" thing though (except that inability to delete stuff of my 360 profile is pissing me off so...)

Amazon is putting a hurting on me but I love the site. I have bought LBP, Fallout 3 and PoP all new for 40 each. That has saved me 75 dollars if I had bought them at BB or CC.

My fellow CAG's, I think I have a problem. I think I am a shopaholic when it comes to games. The sad part about this is I don't have time to play them anymore. I am a full-time student, with a full-time job, and family to support. The amount of money I have spent on games since October is staggering. Easily in the thousand dollar range. Games I have bought that probably won't get played...

Sites like amazon, and gamefly make it hard for me to pass on deals. For example I got Mk vs. Dc 3 weeks ago on amazon used for $35 from some user eager to sell it. The game was flawless. I could not pass it up. Do you guys think I have a problem? Other than posting long a$$ forum post in the wrong section :)

Me too. I'm still sore that I jumped on Tales SE when it first came out. I'm tempting to order a second copy but I think it's just wasting money. The way the economy is right now, it'll be even worse next year so while my collector side wants it, my wallet side refuses to back down. ;) I cheer myself up by thinking how much money I would save if I don't buy it (in this case $50).

Wow! That's a lot of debt. Not to preach, but it does not good to be caught in debt like that during these times. If you had to sell a bunch of your items en masse, you'd lose out because everyone wants a sweeter deal than retail, and there are plenty of sweet deals at retail right now.
I've made it a point to buy really, really cheap, like Sears and a few Amazon titles, and I haven't broken the seal on a single game yet. I do this in the event I don't want to spend so much after all, I can return everything, or what I really don't need, no questions asked.
Seriously. Look over all you have and see what you can do without that isn't already unwrapped. Taking things back can be a great contingency plan.
Another strategy I've used is to buy duplicates of great deals. For instance, the Radio Shack deals have been so good, I've bought dupes of everything, which I can sell for nearly double price, which means I basically get the games for free. Or I can trade new, unopened games for games of high value.
Again, I'm not trying to preach. I've been in debt before and know it's not comfortable, especially when the debt is incurred for things you want, but don't really need.

Yea, I think I have my priorities straight. No bills go unpaid, no debt other than the usual monthly bills of mortgage, utilities, etc. I don't smoke or drink and I buy my cloths from Goodwill and Wal-mart, lol. The fridge stays stocked with groceries, and the family is taken care of. Buying games is my only vice.

Careful...some would label you a "scalper" or "flipper" for double-dipping on deals. It's the new found theory of "everyone is entitled to a deal, and you're not allowed to profit from it."
Personally, I agree with you, Tele. Using deals to help finance things/minimize debt is a good way to do things.

Good strategies there, but then again, most CAGs know that already :)
anyhow, beware of BB's return policy... after 30 days, no more returns for store credits, even with valid receipts. That's something new i learned the past week. I use to return a game purchased 60 days ago (not opened of course) with the receipt for store credits. Well, not anymore...
PS i don't feel that bad missing out the ToV deal at all... Although putting the game into my cart does comfort me in some ways, lol.

Yeah, I know, I know. But in reality, most of the deals at Sears and even Radio Shack are snatched up by the employees. I've spoken to them and know first-hand, myself.
From my end, it's not as mercenary as it sounds. I'm not trading up for anything but more games. I really want trade for a copy of LittleBigPlanet! If someone has a new extra copy, I have a new copy of MGS4 for trade.
Good strategies there, but then again, most CAGs know that already :)

Oh, I'm aware of the policies. 30 days is 30 days. But that puts me comfortably into January, after Christmas and after the New Year's deals. I'm sure I'll find some killer deals between now and then, and I'll assess what I actually want to keep after the holidays are over.
It's a strategy of buy now, while it's cheap, and reassess later. I am a cheapassgamer, after all! ;)

I will agree with $2k is nothing for debt. Look at the poor graduates that are coming out of college, with 80k worth of school loans, with a very poor and declining job market. I live in Knoxville, TN, and the professors at University of Tennessee were apologizing to graduates because the majority of them won't be able to find jobs in the near future.
That being said, I probably bought more than I should, but the way I look at it, there really isn't too many games in the near future (6 months) that I am not really looking forward to. Giving me some much needed time to digest some of these gaming deals I have gotten over the past two months.

Yeah, it does suck to be coming out of college at the moment with so much debt, as well. The gov't I'm sure won't extend the 6-months grace period.
I've debated if I should send my 360 Elite back, but then I was like, NAH! :) If the recession is going to be as deep as they say, I'm going to need a distraction, and gaming is it!

It is good to be in school right, now, actually. I'm pursuing my second Bachelor's right now, in Game Art & Design. I've been to Siggraph and to the GDC (Game Developers Conference), and it's all been great so far. Really looking forward to developing a few games myself.
And that is what people do. Chapter 7 rocks.
You know, I could have written off my entire first degree years ago before the law changed in 1996 or 1997, that stopped (mostly doctors and lawyers) from filing Chapter 7 to remove their debt.
But I've never heard of people charging that much to credit cards and then filing Chapter 7. Most degrees these days are 80K and higher. How do you even get a few credit cards to accomodate that total?

To me gaming has actually saved me money. One really bad (or good...however you want to look at it) night at the bar could be a couple hundred dollars.
