Update: Congratulations to the CAG community who raised $32,677 for Penny Arcade's Child's Play (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/) charity! Everyone who participated should feel extremely proud of themselves. As a small bonus, everyone who donated a prize and/or money to the fund will receive priority access to the upcoming CAG beta on February 1st. Please look below to see the winner's list and details on how to claim prizes.
Original post
In 2007, CAGs raised over $27,000 for Penny Arcade's Child's Play (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/) charity. This year, let's see if we can hit $30,000 before the year is through.
For every $5 donated via PayPal through the CAG ChipIn system (http://cag.chipin.com/childs-play-charity), you will receive one entry into a raffle to win a $500 Amazon Gift Certificate or other great prizes! Last year, the CAG Community donated some really cool and generous prizes and I'm sure the tradition will continue this year. I expect the prize list to grow and grow until the very end of the fundraiser.
You must donate through the ChipIn system (http://cag.chipin.com/childs-play-charity) or your raffle entry will not register. Use any of the links in this post or the widget below. Just click the "ChipIn" button to donate.

What's up with not accepting used items? I'm sure a lot of people have used games that they would be more than happy to donate to this cause instead of or in addition to donating money, and many people would be happy to receive them. Certainly they are more likely to be donated than brand new games. Seems like a poor choice.

Damn, did you donate $100?
....
....*looks at wallet* Err, don't count on me to match it, although I do plan on contributin' near the end of the month!
And I kinda agree with Rocko 'bout the used game deal; lots of gamers keep their games in great condition, and if you're only acceptin' new games, that means that we'll probably have to go out and buy somethin' to donate, right?
Maklershed
12-02-2008, 07:49 PM
Well to be honest, it does kinda come across rather chintzy. I know whoever would donate a used item would still be doing a good thing. But would you guys be as excited about entering the contest* if the prize list consisted of used copies of video games .. most of which would probably be a few months old .. as opposed to brand new and sealed stuff?
*not that the contest should be your primary motivation for donating
Rocko
12-02-2008, 07:59 PM
The contest should not be the primary motivation for donating, but let's be honest. How much money do you think the site would've raised last year if it didn't get tons of blog coverage due to the contest, which had over 80 prizes or something crazy like that. That money was not from CAG members only, and would not have reached that high if it weren't for the contest. IMO, game donors are doing just as great of a service as the cash donors, as they are giving people who wouldn't usually donate a reason to.
This is for a charity. And it's clear that last year's format worked well. I'd say you shouldn't fix what's not broken. This isn't a time for anything other than gaining the most money as possibly for Child's Play, and used game donations certainly drive that.

Don't worry if you can't match my donation. I couldn't donate what I wanted to last year since I was in school full time so I wanted to make up for it this year.

We did not accept used games last year either. We had 50 prizes last year...it's just not necessary.

cheapy ever considered some kind of a card that you could print for christmas that says something to the regard of a donation has been made in your name to childs play and then an explination of what the charity is.... just a thought ... I HATE my inlaws and have decided this year to just give them a i made a donation in your name kind of thing.... I would love it to be childs play... they would just hate that ..... :D of course i'll pony up a personal donation as well :D
just a thought from a much hated daughter in law hehe.

In for $5. My fiancee is out of work because of the economy, so $500 gift card would really help pay for some gifts for the holidays.
I feel bad I couldn't donate more, but times are tight.

Btw, expect my donation within a week or so.

Can't afford a cash donation right now, but tossed a game in the pot for somebody to win. Happy CAGsgiving, everyone :)
As a side note, though, I agree with the folks who are advocating that used games be considered as prizes. Perhaps not for the most current systems, but I do have a couple nice PSX games that you'd be hard-pressed to find new. I'd be happy to offer them up, but I don't know if they qualify as "classic". Perhaps a "if you can't find it new at Gamestop, it's okay" policy?

Last year I said I would donate, but ultimately did not...
This year I might throw in a game, and at least $5
Also, for the whole "why no used games" argument,
I'd agree that we should only accept brand new games
If we accepted used games, I'm sure at least some of them would be in piss poor condition. I don't think we want people just clearing out their crap either.

Concerning used games...I can see reasons to support both points of view.
Some might view used games as too chintzy for a raffle (god bless consumerism) but to help out the CAG community and spread some brotherly(& sisterly) love, how about setting up some sort of SECRET SANTA swap?
I haven't been around much as of late, to pressed for time to play the backlog of games I already garnered through this site, but I sure do appreciate the CheapAss community.
If I could make another suggestion? My dad used to always throw a rocking x-mas party in late January, early February every year. Why? Because everyone has other commitments over x-mas plus Mainers need a reason to celebrate starting in about February of any given year.
How about a post x-mas secret Santa so as not to distract from the fundraiser?
Keep up the great work, my best to Cheapy, Wombat, the Shipwrecks, and Speedy and their families.

Haha, yeah it's my last year in college, although that doesn't mean I'll be able to spend any more frivolously afterwards (yay school loans!).
I work at a GameStop, so maybe I can try 'n convince my manager if we could donate some swag. I know there were a lot of those nerf gun things leftover from the Black Friday weekend, and I bet kids would love that! (...I love it )

If you're looking to donate used games to a great cause, consider donating to the Armed Forces in that respective thread. There are plenty of soldiers overseas who are also gamers who'd love to spend some time with your unwanted stuff.
Is it possible to donate used games to the Child's Play charity itself? I know the charity does a lot in providing funding for children, but is there any need for games within the system itself for kids stuck in hospitals?
Also, consider auctioning off your unwanted used stuff on eBay or Amazon and donating the proceeds themselves to Child's Play. Every little bit helps - this is for an awesome cause, and everything needs funding.
Matched last year's $20.00. Might have to make another donation in a few weeks.

Who the hell did you rob to be able to donate such fantastic prizes?
Money is tight, so I'll be pitching in at least $20.00.
I could donate an unused (pin not scratched) $10.00 iTunes card... but it pales in comparison to these other awesome prizes. Although it would be easy to send (throw it in an envelope or just email the code).
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how the raffle entries are cross-referenced to a CAG user ID through the chip-in GUI?

Noone that didn't deserve it. ;)
In all seriousness, it is for a good cause. I have a few charities I make donations to every year, but this one hits home a bit more. Something about being able to relate to kids in hospitals, and well....we're all gamers, right?
I may have a few more tricks up my sleeve before the month is out. :D

I'm somewhat new to these forums, but I'd like to say that the spirit of giving here is definitely beyond what I've seen elsewhere. You guys have created an awesome community!
Hmmm... I have a LARGE pile of loose change in my closet. The piles usually come out to $40-$50 when I cash it in. I'll see if I can order a game or two for a prize. I wish I would have known this during Black Friday, and I would have bought some stuff then.

I am so confused, why doesnt a prize like this go to the charity itself or is sold for the charity's benefit? It could be set up at some childrens shelter where lots of kids could have fun with it I would presume or even a local library or something.

Some people may not like the power paypal can have over your bank account but I suppose if the person isnt buying/selling via ebay or anything else, it could be ok.

I think the ideas is that people will ultimately donate more than the value of the prize in order to attempt to win the prize.

I think the ideas is that people will ultimately donate more than the value of the prize in order to attempt to win the prize.
But if a person who donates $5 has an opportunity to win this bundle, and the majority of people will donate less than the $400-500+ value of this bundle the idea that a person can win a massive bundle for such little effort is kinda lame. If it was split up into smaller bits or something, that would make more sense (not as a single prize).
The person who had this sitting around could have seen the his "prize" be put to immediate use if it went to a charity/house/library directly.
I am specifically addressing this massive prize bundle and not all the smaller little prizes or the $500 gift card because it seems to be an excessively large prize and I thought there was something on CAG where donations of games directly to a kids charity occurred (unless I am confusing it with the military one).
anyways thats the last I'll say about that. I'm just as happy to win the prize now that it is in the pot but still...

While I understand your point, I think the reason for all this isn't to win prizes, it's to raise money for charity. Having said that, if more people are inclined to donate small amounts in the hopes of winning a big prize, then it's worth it in the long run.

If it's the same as last year, which I assume it is. Then it's all sorted by your email that paypal uses. Originally last year donations were going to be connected to users on CAG via the email that paypal used but not everyone had the same email and some donator's weren't CAGs.

Q. Does Child's Play charge administrative fees?
A. We try our best to have every dollar that comes in go right back to the hospitals, but there is a slight administrative cost that does get paid for with donations (for example, shipping $200,000 worth of Nintendo DS' to dozens of hospitals worldwide is not free, sadly). Historically, these charges have not exceeded 2-3%. It's true that we're a non-profit, but unlike most non-profits, we're not in it to create a self-sustainable entity. We do it to give.

if each CAG gives 5 dollars we can get to 30,000 or more
According to the site's info, there are 41794 registered members. If each contributed $5.00, we'd be sitting pretty at nearly $209,000! This thread has gotten 6743 views...but only 360 contributors to date. Some of you CheapAsses need to open those wallets! I'm feeling the need to contribute another $20.00.

Well, you've got to figure maybe of those 41,794... 20,000 or so are genuinely active enough to even see this thread, even then yeah $5.00 per member is a ton of money.
Though, I've posted about this charity on other forums I visit, so more exposure has been given regardless.
The economy is rough on us all, but $5 for kids who really need it won't be hurting your wallet, especially when you're using this site to purchase video games. =]

Even if 20,000 users are active, how many of those users have paypal accounts? That alone limits how many people are going to be able to participate using ChipIn.
Of course even 10,000 users at $5 a piece would beat our goal this year.

Plus the shout about dvd games are new...not used. I guess' I'll have to donate to toys for tots if they won't be used in the raffle as prizes.

Child's Play Charity Exceeds $1,000,000 In Donations
Marks the third straight year that Child's Play has hit a million dollars.
By Kat Bailey (http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5725436), 12/17/2008
http://media.1up.com/media?id=3661730&type=lg
One of the best things to ever happen to the gaming community keeps getting bigger. And now for the third year in the row, Child's Play has raised more than $1,000,000 in donations. According to Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21547) and the official website (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/), the charity for children's hospital patients started by Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (Gabe and Tycho to you and me) in 2003 has surpassed the million mark. As of December 12, the total sits at $1,070,000, a number that Holkins called "almost stupidly large."
Over on Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/12/15/you-will-feel-heat/), Holkins said, "What could I possibly say that this weird, almost stupidly large number does not communicate?"
Child's Play still has a little over $200,000 to go before hitting last year's target. But with gamers all over the world continuing to give generously, it looks like an attainable goal.
That's amazing... I think that should go on the first post.

Yeah, I kept it north america only because I doubt prize donators will want to ship internationally.

Its in the spot where the normal 300x250 appears. Its not customizable. If you are in the USA or Canada, you should see it. Lemme play around with it a bit.
