heh, guess it didn't sell so great over the weekend and they're just continuing to try to move stock...
lunatic: Not to split hairs, but Golden Axe was on the Genesis/Megadrive. The original Sega console (in America and probably Europe) was the Master System.
I'm tempted to buy this, but seeing as it dropped from $60 to $20 in a month and a half, I'm sure I can get it cheaper if I wait.

I loved to original Golden Axe! We didn't have it but I played it all the time when I went over to my friend's place. I bought the xbla version of it a while back but it seemed a lot shorter than I remembered it. Anyway, that's one of the fastest drop in price on a new release. The reviews were pretty awful though.

Actually, the original Golden Axe game was in arcade first and then later ported to the Genesis. After that, two Genesis-only sequels were made.

Why can't some company just make an updated side-scroller like the old days? That would probably be super cheap to make and you could sell a boat load of them at 29.99. Imagine an updated Streets of Rage, Final Fight or Golden Axe. Make them 3-4 players and have online play. I'm baffled as to why none of these old-school games haven't just received a face lift and added online play. Instead we get games like Beast Rider that have little to no resemblance to the original game that was such a success.

Well if you think about it, they are kinda doing that with XBox Live, PSN and Wii VC. Cheap 10-15 dollar games that take a lot of cues from the 2D graphics age. But another thing might be that the market for those old school types of games is simple to small to be financially viable. In a market that is so obsessed with pixel-shadders and polygon counts, 2D games are turning into a dieing breed. It's become a niche market, which is unfortunate because the cost of making a 2d game is a fraction of what is costs to make a GOW type game. And on top of that it seems like the developers can concentrate a lot more on the making a really fun game when they don't have to worry about high end 3d graphics. I am a personal fan of the 2d cell shaded games though, they just seem to hold the test of time better that 3d.

See 'Castle Crashers' on XBLA, especially if a patch is ever released. Also, Sega is wreking on another Genesis collection, which, I believe, will have the 'Golden Axe' and 'Streets Of Rage' trilogies on it. It would be nice to see Capcom release a 'Capcom Classics Collection' of Final Fight. Include the arcade version, SNES, SNES Guy, Sega CD, FF2, FF3, Mighty FF, the rare Saturn FF Revenge, and maybe even FF Streetwise. And throw in the 'Saturday Night Slam Masters' series as well. Capcom is too busy with 'RE5', 'SFIV', 'Bionic Commando', 'Dark Void', etc. to consider a retro collection.

This is not a horrible games (although if I paid 60 for it Id be pissed) but it is missing alot of the charm that made the Genesis GA's fun... most importantly multiplayer... and this game is really dark... I got mine for about 25 penny guides so Im happy with what I paid for it

lol, I'm the opposite. I would love a Devil May Cry clone that's done well (with deep combat. DMC is not like every action game)... but alas, Golden Axe looks like it's an action game that's uninspired.

You ever wonder what kind of loser buys a game like this at full MSRP as soon as possible? And yes, that "loser" designation includes the 'big fans' of Golden Axe--and especially them, as they would be the ones that should/would know better.
I gotta believe, I want to believe that games like this only sell at full price to the seriously baked wandering a 24-hour Wal-Mart at 3 in the morhing with their dipshit friends, just looking to do something incredibly stupid.

Seems like it's right back to the mixed bag. The screenshots don't look that bad, I'll bite at $10 shipped (hint hint Newegg.com) Hell I played through Darkened Skye on GC and I actually had fun with Beowulf and Conan. Conan is actually a pretty solid and fun game to play. Beast Rider is just extremely bland. There is no real "fun" parts and the combat system totally blows. You basically wait for an attacker and once a color pops up just prior to the attack you press the matching button to defend/counter the move. There is very little depth to your moves and nothing like the combat system in Conan where you upgrade and add attacks to your abilities. The best part for me was riding the beasts, but that can be awkward and they are a bit limited in what they can do. Not the worst game, but even a hack-n-slash fan like me got tired of it after a while. Coming off playing Conan and even Viking: Battle for Asgard, Beast Rider just felt uninspired and bland.

I don't know if I can agree with all that. Look at the Wii and the Nintendo DS. Their graphics capabilities are far worse than any of the other systems out there, and they are selling more than any other system.
Grahpics are just becoming too much the focus, and at heart, gamers don't really care about the graphics anyways. Sure, we like to see some flashy stuff and if the graphics are amazing, then more power to the game/system. But if the gameplay blows, the game is going to suck. Look at games like Lair for the PS3, the game had amazing graphics, but it was horrible gameplay and controls, so it is now in the $10 bin at Fry's.
I can agree that graphics are important for the initial sale/interest. But the lasting appeal will be non existant if the gameplay/mechanics are bad. It is like a relationship with a man/woman ... looks will hook a person, maybe, but whether or not you can reel them in and keep them forever ... you are going to need more than looks to accomplish that. Lets face it, looks fade with time, and so do graphics (as they get out dated).
So there you go, a graphics/games to RL relationship comparisson for you, haha.
And on topic, I think I will pass on this, it doesn't look great. The only thing that intersted me was that it was Golden Axe.

Give me the critical consensus over the gamer consensus eight days a week. Sure, the former might get bought off on occasion, might be embittered by gaming for reviews 'round the clock during the holiday season, but at least they aren't the most impulsive 'all or nothing' people on the planet, justifying their purchases and time invested with grotesquely inflated scores, or determining that any game they don't want to like (or don't own the system for) is a "0/10".
Also, when one is avoidant of capitalization and punctuation but prone to leetspeak when posting his critique, I tend to chuck it right out. Gamer reviews...tend to have this person well-represented.

Critic reviews are simply more consistent once the average is taken. There'll often be outliers, but as long as you take it with a grain of salt (while keeping certain biases of yourself like genre, artstyle, series) critic reviews are generally reliable when viewed as a whole.
That said, I did buy this game. On release date. Then returned the game. Then bought it again at this price range.
For some reason, I just wanted to see HOW bad it was... and since I'm a hardcore action game fan I figure that I can likely tolerate it.

I rented the 360 version from Gamefly and as a big fan of the original arcade game, this game is simply awful. The block/parry controls are awkward, the achievements are impossible to get, the beasts' lives are limited (they die after you use their powers a couple times), the attacks from the shaman wizards are cheap and hit you from all directions off-screen. I'm happier just replaying the XBLA port and I'm actually having a blast playing Conan.

Well I am up for 1 at $19.99 with no tax and free shipping because if you play it and don't like it, the base trade in value at Gamestop before any bonus or edge is already $20 :applause:
So really, how can you go wrong ? I watched a couple gameplay videos and also a developer video on Amazon.com and it looks pretty cool monsters, graphic etc. I always loved those beautiful heroine games with skimpy clothes like Heavenly Sword anyways...
Also, I respect Dave Halverson over at Play magazine that gave it a 7/10 and ripped the other reviewers a new one for short changing the game commenting how they obviously didn't understand it or play it for very long let alone beat it.
So its not a $59.99 great game ? Then Bring on the hack and slash for $20 accepting it for what it is and enjoy the nostalgia on the old Golden Axe sounds & music(gnome etc.) I watched a vid on the voice actor work and it looks like they used a talented voice cast for all the characters and monsters.
Heck even a 2 hour movie at the theater with snacks is $20 !? So ya'll stop being such haters now... :D

The problem is that most of these games are pretty crappy and don't stand up well to the older games. Companies don't seem to be putting much effort into making the newly developed download only games any good. There's nothing that compares to Gradius V or R Type Final, which I think are examples of what people want....the same gameplay as old-school, but modernized and with shiny new graphics.
But another thing might be that the market for those old school types of games is simple to small to be financially viable. 2d games sell when they are done well, the problem is that developers are treating them like "budget" projects. Look at castlevania on the DS and GBA, where effort was actually put in to make a good game...those have always been hot sellers. Whereas the 3d castlevanias on N64 and PS2/Xbox quickly ended up in bargain bins. A 2d game will still sell IF it has marketing or name recognition and it's a quality game. Most of the 2d games that were good but sold poorly can attribute their poor sales to a lack of marketing rather than being 2d.

Actually the castlevania GBA and DS games didn't sell much of anything. That they didn't end up in bargain bins is simply due to konami not over-producing them. But I see what you're trying to get at.

It went back up because Amazon sold out.
Too bad, I too would have got it at 9.99. Oh well, I can always find something else to use 9.99 on.

It's a much much much less polished, less pretty Devil May Cry with a paltry combat system, reused enemy fodder, and an uninspired story. One thing that should be noted, I feel, is that many reviews state that you cannot Evade/Parry while attacking. This is actually wrong. You can cancel practically any movement with an Evade/Parry move. Tyris will stop what she's doing to perform the move.
That said, I think it's worth 10 bucks if you're a fan of the genre.

I just have to let you guys considering buying this know how awful this game is:
Ok, so I started off, killed some people. Ok, game's pretty awesome so far. I find a dino to ride. Awesome. My dino gets killed. I proceed, no places for a dino respawn. I get to a point, kill some more guys. Note, I am locked in this area by not an invisible wall, but a glowing yellow wall. There's no place to spawn a dino at ALL. However, to get through the gate, you need to be on the dino so that both of you can shoot fireballs to break the gate. So I was stuck in an outside room. I shut the game off and haven't looked back since.

Also, I respect Dave Halverson over at Play magazine that gave it a 7/10 and ripped the other reviewers a new one for short changing the game commenting how they obviously didn't understand it or play it for very long let alone beat it.
That is the same man who gave Sonic 360 a 9 out of 10 and mentioned none of its glaring, atrocious flaws in his "review". You might want to take his opinions with a jar of salt.
But yeah, for $10, going in with some low expectations, I think this game will be good enough. I loved Final Fight Streetwise and most critics trashed that game...

Holy crap that game was bad. The reviews should have been much worse than they already were.
Yes it was and it was hard as hell at times, way too many cheap deaths, but for some strange reason I liked it. At $10 I had to jump on this despite everyone's complaints about the game. I was watching the GT video review and honestly it ended up me tuning the guy* out and liking a lot of what I saw. *blah blah whining about no lock on for magic (omg I have to aim) blah blah whining about naked woman hanging by the neck and being torn apart by monsters blah blah (my eyes ... my eyes!)

If a game sucks don't play it.

I'm not buying it only because it's cheap, I'm buying it because it looks decent and if it sucks I should be able to at least get $5 for it so it's like a rental.

If youre looking for easy achievements avoid.. AVOID... you only get like 200 at most for beating the game.. the rest ARE INSANELY HARD TO GET..
The battle blade sword is a ONE HIT ONE KILL on enemies.. but also on you. Some of the levels are impossible to beat with that weapon.. i managed 800/1000 (I Only had to A+ a few more levels).. the A+ ranks are also near impossible to get.
Avoid like the plague if youre getting for achievements.

cause i bought the game so i needed to finish it. and i only put that much time in because i played it at work, had nothing else to do between 11pm, and 3am.
i should take that back, it wasn't awful. but i didn't like alot of things about it. the biggest thing was level grinding, i just can't stand to do that anymore.

YES!! I would pay top dollar for a decent side scroller beat em up. Why did castle crashers do so well, because people want that type of game. Bring back a Streets of rage clone with some up to date gameplay...it will rain $$.

The new Mortal Kombat game is supposed to be good though. Certainly sounds like the best one in ages (if not ever). Even censored, it sounds better than having no fatalities at all like one of the recent ones (where they were just generic). Besides, it's stuff like The Joker, them pulling the camera away or something when he shoots people, having it done off screen.

I am hoping tomorrow's apparent PS3 sale (since we've already had the Wii/360 ones) will have the PS3 version for $10... being a card carrying Sega fanboy I am required to own this game, not sure why everyone else is buying. I'd prefer the PS3 version but did buy the 360 version today with a DVD not coming out for a few weeks to give me time to cancel in case the PS3 version drops.

So far I like it, it's a little tough at times. I'm still not used to the whole, block dodge crap but I still like it better than the original. Has anoyone else noticed an excessive amount of vertical tearing or is it just my 360 telling me it's preparing to red ring again? I get it occasionally in NXE but it's extreme in Golden Axe. Vsync issues always drive me f'n batty.
