Since being laid off I am thinking about possible starting my own consulting business related to technology is general, not limited to pc's. Anyone know of any web resources I should look at? I know I'll have to have a business plan, a little start up money, and a strong network and advertising.

Thanks

buy a book on business startup in your state

then

many places like this for a Business Logo:
http://www.logodesignpros.com/

incorporate your biz:
http://www.legalzoom.com/

find tech consult jobs or people bidding on jobs (if this is the type of biz you are talking about)
http://www.elance.com/p/landing/buyer.html

then advertise local or online. good luck!

You should seek the advice of a consultant.

If you're really serious about this endeavor, http://www.sba.gov/ will be an invaluable resource to you.

Specifically, go to: http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbdc/sbdclocator/index.html

See if there is a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) near you. I spent the better part of this past year interning at my local SBDC and it was a great experience. I worked in the marketing dept., helping clients to see where they can spend their advertising bucks and what would net them the largest gain on their investment...

Basically, you pay nothing for free consulting in all areas small business.

Good luck!

So I think I'm going to post something on my local CL. I'm going to offer my services to help you shop, set up pcs and game consoles, set up ipods, and find the perfect games for your kids for the holidays. What would be the ideal rates to charges someone for this? $30 for the first hour and $20 an hour after that.
