Major kudos to LAHawkeye -- good job, mate.
It's not my intention to threadjack, but this seems pertinent to the thread: what's a "roto-hold", and does anyone know what this supposed deal is in January?

I would think they'd bring them out early Sunday morning... why waste an opportunity to sell stuff right before Xmas?

Oh, well, whatever, maybe they are losing out, but when its a multi-million (billion?) dollar company they can afford this deal for one week. And they should WANT to PM so that THEY are recieveing the business.
Yes, a company that isn't running a promotion definitely wants to PM a loss leader to get you in the door to just purchase that loss leader and loss money in the process.
You're smart. You should totally run a company. I hear the big 3 are looking.

For anyone in the S. NJ area. Went to Toyrus in Burlington NJ(Weds afternoon). They only had Ps3 bundle on the floor. Guy said he had a bunch inthe back and brought 2 cases of the 360 version. Even an employee got one. No mention of a misprint or anything . All the employees working in the videogame section mentioned how great a deal this was.

I'm pretty sure my local TRU is just sitting on theirs until Sunday. I've called every day this week and they keep saying they still haven't gotten any in on their trucks. Funny, one of the hotter games for this Christmas and they don't even get any to sell. I even told the chick on the phone that this seems really shady on their part.

That's what I thought when I first saw the ad... they had a similar misprice a few weeks ago, with signs all over the place correcting it, so I didn't even bother to go out on Sunday (I thought the 0 was supposed to be an 8, and the deal was just the giftcard). But the fact that people are still finding this in stores, and that it's still ringing up at that price, baffles me. It's not even a good loss leader, since it's so expensive that you'd think most would go in and just get that item.

It almost seems like it was a mistake they decided to run with, and then put the roto-hold (WTF?) out in order to not have to claim it was a mistake, but stop selling it after a day or two.

Anyone got any good tips on Socal (LA) stores? I searched TRUs in Culver City, Los Feliz, Alhambra, and West LA somewhere (on la cienega) and came up with nothing. I searched the one in Bell this morning with the same result, though they said they usually get shipments at night so perhaps mornings ar ebest time to check?
Also, what have been the best places to PM in socal? Any BB's give you a GC along with the PM <====haha contractions! :P
I got an xbox 360 on Sunday night at the La Cienega location, there were only two left. Not sure when you went though. There were no PS3 bundles in sight though.

So it may have just been a very, very poorly planned loss leader where the advertising department didn't communicate with the accounting department to inform them just how much they were loosing on every package sold. My guess is that it costs them at least 150, if not 160 per unit wholesale. For those people griping that Best Buy or Circuit City isn't price matching, yes, it sucks. Yes, they should have a disclaimer in their price matching policy to allow them to decline matching loss leaders instead of playing fast and loose with the price matching policy. However, customer relations or not, it is not good business practice to take a $60 dollar negative hit on merchandise when it is sold at a loss to a customer. If anything, this debacle will tighten the restrictions on such price matches in the future, which only hurts us in the long run.

Yeah when i got mine the paper tags said the full price without any notice about the deal. But I took one over to the price scanner in one of the toy aisles to check and it rang up as $109. Found it odd that they had GH kits all over the place but had all the RB2 kits in the back.

L.A. area CAGers still trying to track one of these down... on Tuesday I called in advance to the Stevenson Ranch TRU and talked to the CS rep who admitted that they had them but were all in back on roto hold. I politely said "so let me get this straight... you have the product that is advertised as being on sale this week... but you won't sell it?" she paused and said yes. I asked to speak with her manager, she put me on hold all of 30 seconds, and then took my name and number and said they would sell me one. I immediately drove out there, went to the video game counter, and of course the guy behind the counter didn't believe me at all. I see him walk over to another associate, hear her say "yes", he goes to the back........ BAM $109.99 plus $25 gift card. Done and done. So remember that there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rules. Give it a shot.
You hit it right on the head. It pays to be persistant and you will often times get the deal.

I managed to price match at the Sears in downtown Oakland. I took the last PS3 box, but they had 2-3 of them for the 360.
I asked about price match, showed them the ad, and they were about to call Toys R Us. The manager came over, saw my circular, said "give it to him." 8-)
He then upsold me the replacement plan, and I gladly accepted. Let him have whatever bonus he gets for selling that plan; I got it home for $120!

I think what they are supposed to do is scan and put the money on one of the specail "promotional offer" gift cards, but I guess it's possible that they scanned a normal one for some people. I'm not sure if a normal GC would still have the expiration date.
At any rate, the expiration date, 1/31/09, is printed on the front of the promo GCs.

Went to my local toys r us earlier today but they said they sold out a few days ago and they also didnt have any ads. so i walked around for a bit and just my luck there was one of the ads on the floor. Took the ad to circuit city and they had about 4 bundles left. i took it up to the register and the cashier laughed when she saw the ad and said that she would need to call the manager, they looked really busy and a very angry looking manager came and looked it over and said he can give me it for $110 but cannot give me the GC. i said okay and bought it but when i was leaving he told the cashier not to accept any more price matches for that ad. this was at the circuit city by Northstar Mall in San Antonio

Any cag's work at tru and could check stock? My store is 9522, zip 68521. They only had one copy of the 360 and the ps3 version (and both were really beat up like someone had dropped kicked them across the store) since the sale started on sunday and I was curious if they were holding stock. I was able to get one by pm at wal mart but would love to get the gc as well and return the one to walmart. I have stopped in every day and they haven't got new stock and don't know when they will. Seems kind of fishy not to have any from day 1 of the sale.

they're probably holding stock..the first place I went to in my area was the high traffic TRU (of the 2) and I could sort of tell. Luckily, the other TRU wasn't holding out. It's not really like you can go in the back and check if they are.

I hate these douchey stores w/ price match policies refusing to honor them. It's pure BS. Yes, they'd be taking a loss due to TRU's insane pricing on this, but if they're not going to honor their price-match policy, don't have one. These events clearly tell me who's going to be getting my business. Definitely not Best Buy. They completely refused to honor their own policy, loss or not, it's dishonest. A policy should hold all the time, not just when they feel like honoring it. I'm only buying there on sale when I know they take a loss. Screw them. Boo to TRU for holding back stock too. That's just as crappy. I gotta say, at least Wal-Mart and Sears seem to be a bit more classy when it comes to honoring their price-match policy.

Called them again today and the chick again said they didn't get any in. That's been their story all week long and they say they never know what they are getting in on their trucks, which I find a little hard to believe. I was in the store last night and asked a kid working the game dept. if they had RB2 SE and of course he said no. This kid, however, told me they had received in quite a few throughout the week and had sold them all. Conflicting stories and the kid seemed a little shady acting when I asked him if he was sure there wasn't any in the back room. His "uhh, no" seemed a little unconvincing.

So after checking and calling, no TRU in the OC has any in stock. No use in PM'ing since they will call to verify.
Of course with luck, a nice smile, and SUPER busy for the holidays customer service reps YMMV at any store...
This deal is not officially dead until:
1) every store with a PM policy is 100% out of stock (unlikely)
2) 12/21/08
For those that aren't in the know and just joining this thread at the last possible minute hoping to score.
- IF you find it at Toys R Us it should scan at $189.99, then total at $109.99 and will ask cashier to offer $25 GC.
This is unless TRU has updated their price in the system (so far no indications they have)
You may also print out PAGE 9 of the weekly sales flyer (http://toysrus.shoplocal.com/toysrus/default.aspx?action=entryflash&storeid=2561204&promotioncode=ToysRus-081214&adref=social_bookmarking_site) more specifically HERE (http://toysrus.shoplocal.com/toysrus/new_user_entry.aspx?storeid=2561204&listingid=-2090498789&forceview=y&adref=social_bookmarking_site)
- Most TRU have put stock in the back room on "roto-hold" for future sales flyers.
YMMV getting them to pull stock from the back room, best to ask store manager directly, only they can approve
- TRU ad states CLEARLY "LIMITED QUANTITES" and "NO RAINCHECKS"
They never state how many = "limited" however that allows them to pull stock whenever they feel like it.
- CC and BB usually do call to verify Stock and you will be SOL. YMMV!
- Best Buy sent out a corporate memo NOT to honor price matching on this item because it is a "bundle"
Best Buy could have been more honest by using their ACTUAL policy to not honor "limited quantity" items.
YMMV and people are STILL matching at Best Buy... This would be my last resort as they normally call to verify stock
- Circuit City is hit or miss as well, but normally better than Best Buy. Extra $25 has been YMMV here too.
PRINT a copy of their "Putting Customers First (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/genericContent.do?oid=228705)" letter from the CEO! that should help
- Wal-Mart and Sears generally DO NOT call to verify stock. YMMV!.
- Walmart will match $109.99 without too much hassle, but you will NOT get the $25 GC (no one has yet)
Walmart has several department and store managers, if denied try a register not in electronics to approve.
This will require a supervisor "key override" due to the large reduction. Employees can't approve directly.
- Sears doesn't usually give hassles or call to verify Price when matching print ads, but their stock levels may be very limited.
Sears will generally match the $85 price after the Gift Card has been calculated.

Scored at WM in Galveston, TX last night. PM'd the scanned internet ad (of course I printed multiple pages, duplex on a nice color laser, so maybe it fooled them a bit). I didn't push the gift card, but $109 was good enough for me.

I just went to three stores.
WalMart - No go. The gift card is a gimick and the assistant manager wouldn't budge!
Circuit City - They were out of stock.
Best Buy - Called TRU, simply asked for Rock Band 2, and they got the answer of "YES." I think that they were told the game only was in stock, because as of this morning when I called, they didn't have any.
So my Best Buy (Chicago, IL off of Clark and Diversey) is still pricematching it. Here is the two images I took in with me.

My TRU in Bloomington, IL got a bunch of each console version in today. I've been checking everyday, but no dice. Today I was in for some other shopping and they have both versions in stock.
The cashier even took my 20% coupon that I got in the mail at the beginning of december. First it wouldn't go cause of the GC, so she canceled the transaction, and then rerang it and scanned the coupon all w/o me even asking.
That time it worked, so I got the GC and 360 Kit for $94 after tax. The dude that stamped my receipt and went into the back was blown away by the price. http://i.slickdeals.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
edit..
judging from the post above, I think they might have been holding them for today since the sale technically ended yesterday. When I checked yesterday I had them scan the tag when they didn't have any slips and the guy claimed that "they can't figure out why those 2 cartons show in stock, they dont know where that location in the warehouse is" which I assumed was BS. I worked in retail at BB and KB Toys and just don't have the heart to fight it. So going in today and TRU having them out makes sense. I did get the price no problem.

I don't understand. The sale ended yesterday, but you still got it today for the sale price? Was that just a glitch in the system? I thought the front page of the ad ended yesterday, but the inside pages, where rockband was advertised, was for the whole week?

I went into Circuit City tonight in Wheaton, MD and got both the price match and gift card no problem. They didn't even call Toys R' Us to confirm if they had any in stock. If you go, they don't have any copies on the shelves. So I went and asked at customer service if they had any in the back where they had extra copies (I believe they have mostly ps3). YMMV

Your post is spot on except for one thing - some of us have been very lucky to get the GC from WM, including myself on Monday of this week. I know it's the exception rather than the rule, but just wanted to point out that it did happen and I didn't even ask for it! I picked up 2 RB2 PS3 but couldn't get the GC for both just one. Not bad though!

I only saw this deal today, but managed to get a PS3 bundle at my local TRU. They actually had signs up advertising the sale, but did not have any bundles sitting out. However, there was one with a slightly torn outer box sitting behind the desk which I asked about and got! Will make a great Christmas present for my brother (I already have the 360 bundle).

My Toys 'R Us just got another stack of 360 and PS3 bundles in today, and they were still advertising/honoring the sale.
Those still looking might want to give TRU one last try before giving up.

I was under the impression it was all week. I was just trying to make sense as to why Thursday they say they have 2 cartons, but don't know what warehouse bay it refers to, and today the tickets are restocked and ready to rock.

Tried price matching the deal at Best Buy in Sunnyvale. Was told to ask customer service. I asked about the price match there and was told they weren't going to pricematch because of a memo telling them not to honor it. After some arguing later, I was still told no. Best Buy...more like SHIT buy!
After some reading in this thread, I tried Guitar Center. Was also told to go to customer service. The guy there was doing a awful lot of typing, so I'd figured this was going to work. But then he went to TRU's site to find stores to verify. Shit...it's all over...or is it? After some waiting he finally asked TRU for the price of RockBand 2 special edition and then I heard him say "oh it's unavailable". My heart just stopped. I knew it was over for sure. But all of a sudden I heard him ask "but it's 109.99 right?" and an "ok thank you". Hmm...maybe I got a chance at this. He went on and asked another guy at customer service and then to (I believe) the manager. No clue what he was saying or asking there. Then I was told that I would get my price match! But no gift card. That's cool. While he was typing some more he started saying that he couldn't believe the price. We started making small talk. Finally he got everything typed and told me the total's going to be $119 and something cents. I payed up, and he was all like "I'm gonna go and get this bundle later!" and I told him that he could keep the paper with the ad I brought in.
Best Buy and their butt monkey slaves can go shove one. Guitar Center, you rule!

The deal should still be going on. I just commented that the print ad I got in the paper had the deal going until 12/18. However, the website's ad states it runs until 12/20. I printed the web ad out, and will try bringing it to a store to get PM'd tomorrow if possible.

Was able to buy one at the TRU in Mission Viejo this afternoon before heading out to the Wild Animal Park. They had just received their FedEx shipment of both PS3 and 360 bundles. They still had about 8 bundles for the PS3 and 3 for the 360, but this was around noon.

Has anyone gotten it today from TRU? The website is saying it's $189, but it's supposedly in stock at my local store. Are they honoring the $109 price still?
The fuckers at the Seattle Toys R Us had one out on the floor last night and after having to argue with them for a few minutes they finally agreed to sell it to me. But it rang up at $189 and their manager claimed the sale was over. Bunch of lying bait-and-switchers. Fuck TRU, I hope they go out of business.

My local TRU was OOS, as well as all the surrounding stores, and I couldnt find a flyer, so I just went by the online ad I had them look up. I am in Ocala, FL.
Everyone around here is a bit crabby, so NOBODY would do the Gift Card price match.
Sears almost PM'ed, but the lady shot me down because she was "sure" they meant rock band 1 and wouldnt call to verify.
CC called to verify stock, and I was shot down because TRU was OOS.
Walmart says they HAVE TO have the flyer, so that was a no-go.
Target doesn't price match.
And last but not least, from hearing that almost everyone had been turned down, Best Buy PM'ed almost no questions asked. After getting an employee's attention, I walked over to a nearby computer terminal, showed him their website, confirmed it wasn't a "doorbuster" or "weekend before XMas only" thing. Said "OK, I'll radio up and have em PM for you."
Walked out paying 117 and change. :( no GC this time, but I still have the 25 TRU one from earlier this week.
I bought one the first day it came out, and returned it to walmart for a $201 store credit and got myself a Garmin 255 GPS, but this one is mine for the keeping.

I was able to pick up a Xbox 360 bundle last night from the local Toys R Us. I asked if they had more in the back since the 2 Xbox 360 boxes on the floor were kind of damaged but he said that was all that was left and he was surprised they actually got a second shipment in before the sale ended.

Walmart doesnt PM anything printed so you have to get the actual physical ad. Better to just go to your local TRU to see if their system still rings it up at $109. If it doesn't, then grab an ad and try your luck with any other closeby retailer. Maybe not Best Buy because some of them have received memos to not honor the price. Any way you look at it, you'd better start moving your ass now to get your RB2. Good luck.

You realize that they have to total it out before it applies the discount right? You got past the initial part where they scanned it into the register? It shows up as 189, then when they hit total it dropps it to like $84 then they scan the $25 gift card to bring it to the right total.

My husband tried to get RockBand2 at ToysRUs a few days ago. He took the slip showing that they have the product in stock, first, to one of the price scanners to check the price. It scanned in at $109.99. So he took the slip to the counter and asked for RockBand2. At first the girl behind the counter said the sale was over, a lie, which he knew. He told her he had scanned it and got the sale price, she scanned it and it came up the sale price. Then she told him they were out of stock. My husband didn't see it at the time but there was actually one on display up high in the main store area.)
I was pissed. I'm not a big person, I'm only five foot two, but you don't want to see me pissed. I took the slip went up to the counter (wearing my Army jacket as I am former military), gave the slip to the guy behind the counter and told him I wanted it. I then told him that I knew that there was a sale price on it. He said he had to go get one and went in the back. As he was bringing it out another guy told him that they weren't supposed to sell them! He said to go ahead and sell it to me but not to sell any more. When the kid helping me asked why that was the second kid said that they just weren't. He said that they had pulled all of the ads and displays for the game. When the kid ringing me up said I brought the slip he said that they should have been pulled too. I got the sale price, the gift card and brought home RockBand2.

This happens all the time although the retailer will usually just post a sign in the store saying "sorry for the error" and usually won't honor it. Store ads are generally sent to the printer weeks ahead of time. It's possible it was a printing error and my guess is by the time it was discovered it was too late for a re-print to be done in time.
I wonder if they honored the mistake due to the crappy economy? Maybe they thought it was better honor it and get as many shoppers into the store as possible rather than deny it and suffer more losses pissing people off?

It isn't just that it may have been a printing error, but that it also was loaded into the point-of-sale registers as the price for the bundle. So the ad department produced a price that TRU wasn't happy to honor, and the systems set up to honor and produce the price advertised at the register, but TRU didn't want to honor both the price for the bundle in their system, as well as their own advertised price, going so far as to lie and say the bundle wasn't in stock to avoid taking further losses. Suck a major cock-up in several departments at corporate TRU.
Now that the week's over, do we have any information about whether this was a mistake in the ad and TRU was really really really slow in telling stores not to honor it or whether it was just an epic deal?
Well, for those that got it, it was truly an epic deal. Even if you PM'ed and didn't get the gift card, you were still getting it for $80 off MSRP.

The lady at the Customer Service desk called to see if it was in stock, but she got the run around on the phone and gave up. Meaning, she gave me the deal even though she couldn't verify if it was in stock or not. I got lucky and look forward to trying this game out.

Nearly every store I frequent in L.A. County --whether Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, or Walmart-- calls to check stock.
What's even more frustrating is that I've had BB lie to my face during a PM attempt on a TRU sale item. They called TRU, then told me that it wasn't in stock there. But I called them out on the lie because TRU is right next door, and I saw the game in question there just before heading into BB to use a gift card on the PM. When I brought that up, the customer service employee smiled sheepishly, stared into space awkwardly for a few seconds, and gave me the discount.
Stores in this area act like a PM is the worst thing that could possibly happen to their store, and treat you like a highway robber if they finally concede to the PM.

Too bad I didn't have time to go to Walmart...but I think it'd be the same.
the key to price matching that no one really seemed to mention is to try the price match during the busiest time of the day at the store. if you go into a store like BB during say 3:00 in the afternoon the weekend before X-Mas and the store is PACKED, you have a much better chance of the employee not bothering to call because they just don't have the time. i'm not saying that this is going to work all of the time, but it's better to try it when it's busy than when it's not...

Pricing error? It was printed in an add and sent into the companies POS systems. If its an error, it was a weekly long one that resulted in many CAGers getting the deal from TRU or via pricematching....
The definition of "deal" is being stretched.

the key to price matching that no one really seemed to mention is to try the price match during the busiest time of the day at the store. if you go into a store like BB during say 3:00 in the afternoon the weekend before X-Mas and the store is PACKED, you have a much better chance of the employee not bothering to call because they just don't have the time. i'm not saying that this is going to work all of the time, but it's better to try it when it's busy than when it's not...
Or you can stand in 2 lines (the registers, then get sent over to the service desk to handle PM) and leave empty handed like I did the first day of this sale!

I tried CC first with printout of the ad. First thing she did was look on TRU website at the product page, where the price showed up for 189.99 or whatever it is. I told her to look at the ad I printed. She showed it to a manager to, and continued to call up the store nearby. Alas they weren't in stock so she did not PM. Later went to Walmart, first asked if THEY had them in stock, kid went to go look in back. Came back and said no, but refused to make eye contact when telling me. Either he's socially awkward or hiding something...
I'm happy for those of you who got in on this deal, and hope the losses incurred by the big box retailers don't necessitate a retail bailout...

Was there a copy of this ad at all in this thread? I'm looking about and not seeing it... But ~70 pages is a lot.
