View Full Version : Canadian Deal Share - Brainstorming

Hi, everyone.

As we all know, over the past couple months there's been a number of really good deals for video games. TRU B2G1, Zellers misprice, Rogers 2/40, and so forth.

And in every thread, I've seen the following comments:

1) I only want X and Y. If someone sees them I'll gladly pay you back + shipping.
2) I have an extra of Z if anyone wants...
3) Shaqing RFD hoarders!

It's a forgone conclusion that any halfway descent deal is HIGHLY regional, and anyone outside that region will more often than not get screwed over by a hoarder.

When a deal comes around, I've noticed that the majority of us here at CAG just want a game or two. We're not interested in buying the whole lot to hock on Craigslist. And it also often seems that the seekers and their quarry aren't together. Since we're already all sharing the information about where the deals are, maybe we can work together to get other members the games they want.

I was thinking about starting some sort of "deal share". The basic concept is simple. You want game X that's on for an amazing deal. You can't find it in your region, but would be willing to pay the cost of the deal + shipping to get it to you. If another member is able to find that game, they'll pick it up for you an be reimbursed.

What it ISN'T is a way to make a massive profit off each game by re-selling it at retail to those you took the deal away from.

What are your thoughts on the benifits and downfalls of something like this? What other aspects of it come to mind?

THe deal share would operate on a very "quid pro quo" basis-- where by helping someone else out, it makes the service better, and when you're looking for a game, it'll help you. Though I could see a small "finders fee" being added to a find-- get someone the game, and they'll pay you back cost + 5% or something-- something to cover gas and time, or a small token of reward for those who find deals and share them. Though some of us would do the game seeking out of the goodness of our hearts, some sort of token reward would help get more people on the look.

A problem I can see is too many people trying to fulfil a deal. If I say "I'd like Raving Rabbids for $20 from Rogers", and seven people PM me back saying "I bought it for you", then who do I buy it from? Six people would be left stuck with a game they don't want and out $20. Do I select someone before purchase, send them $20, and wait for them to buy it? But what if they go back and the Rogers is out of stock. What happens to my $20?

What do you think?

You can always return the game. Rogers gives 30 day warranty.

I am up for such idea. I've already seen a few people buying 10+ games at 10:00 am opening.

Yeah I think returning the game isn't a problem at most places..I'd be down for such a program, I'm in Waterloo so I don't think the RFD effect is toooo terrible, but you never know. I'm on this damn website all the time so I can usually jump on the deals in a timely manner.

edit: in terms of payment, we're just going to have to be upstanding folks about it. If I buy a game for Dan, we'll either meet up for the exchange, or I'll mail it to him ASAP, and he'll shoot me a PayPal payment or what have you. I know I wouldn't pay for anything if the guy on the other end didn't have it in his possession. Think of how goomba does business, seems to work pretty well on his end. Cost of item + shipping + $1-$2 for the effort.

Or we can always setup a trade. I always have tons of games to trade in my list on top of what I picked up from the sale and such.

Maybe we should just keep a thread for each region wanting to do this in the trading section.

One for Ontario one for Vancouver and if needed more can be made.

I don't think they'd need to be regionalized. Too many subforums since there's thousands of regions in Canada. Plus I wouldn't have any problem paying for shipping between regions if someone had a game I wanted.

I think Cheapy keeps teasing some new trading features that will be implemented eventually. I have no idea what they'll be like, but perhaps they could be of use to this endeavour.

not subforum. Just subtopics. Noone uses the trading board anyway.

I agree, and besides, isn't shipping ridiculously cheap if it's only a game or two?

You can always indicate that you are willing to pay for shipping (should be a couple of bucks for a bubble mailer).

By regular mail I believe its about $2-$3. $8 tracked by canada post. In most cases, it's cheaper than time and gas to hunt through a whole city.

Anyone wants to start one for 2/40 from Rogers? I know some stores will run the promo through boxing day and they might have more pulls. I always have games to trade :)

I'm happy to check a few Rogers for people. I'll post from Newmarket when I'm up there on Christmas.

A note to anyone who does the buying: Don't forget that you earn the Star Rewards off this. Make sure you buy a $30 gift card first for the extra points.

Great idea, I'd be happy to help someone out. I'm in Cambridge and there is usually a good supply of game deals close at hand to where I am.
I just hope that no one get's burned by this, it would kill a good thing.

I think this is a great idea... and I'll totally be on board once Christmas goes by. My wallet is a bit on the empty side right now, but I think this is a great idea. It's a bit hard to set it up, but I'd probably just got to Rogers and pick up some games that I'd think were decent, and then see if anyone here wanted them. If they didn't I'd just go back and return them.

I can get someone a copy of GHII for the PS2 for $20 shipped.
