Sorry for the awkward title, but as some of you may be aware, whether you be you fans of popular literature (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176174) or No Country For Old Men, a movie is coming out in 2009 called The Road. It's a post-apocalyptic genre movie based on the book by Cormac McCarthy (http://www.cormacmccarthy.com/works/Default.htm) about a man and a child trying to make their way to the southern United States in a post-nuclear, decimated landscape. Think Fallout 3 minus the mutants and ghouls.

Unfortunately it's directed by a mostly untested person (although he did direct The Proposition) the cast however is top notch:

I can not wait to see this movie. Who else has read the book and/or looking forward to this movie as well?

I'm Almost done with the book. I read half of it waiting In line at Best Buy during Black Friday...well before they turned the parking lot lights off.

It's got some good tension and a good story, but the format they used for the chapters just annoys me to no end. The Diary/journal entries are so frustrating to read, I like reading a book and getting a whole chapter filled with dialogue and detail. reading books this way for me is just painful...I will finish it nonetheless before the movie comes out.

I read the book, but didn't enjoy it as much as No Country. I think it would make a good transition to the screen though, and I'm looking forward to the movie.

Finished the book stranded at the airport. Im really interested in seeing it. I think that its going to leave alot of people unsatisfied. Alot will expect in a apocalyptic movie to have action scenes etc but this book is much more calm, more tension based. After the first 40 minutes of them counting out food cans i think that some viewers might not be so thrilled.

After anyone read it did any of you have the urge to store cans or eat canned peaches? o.O

The movie was supposed to out already.

The studio pushed it into 2009 for whatever reason.

I loved the Proposition and I think they picked the perfect director for this film. The cast is perfect. I finished reading the book last month so I am looking forward to seeing the film.

x 2

I honestly pictured Garrett Dillahunt (the way he looked like he did in Deadwood) as the gang member when I was reading the book. *probable movie spoiler*When they say "gang member" I'm assuming they're referring to the one that is killed by the dad when he goes to take a piss in the woods and finds him and the boy *probable movie spoiler*

I think I pictured the dad as Clive Owen but thats probably only because of Children of Men. I'm sure Viggo Mortensen is gonna be good.

Overall I'd have to say the casting is pretty damn solid.

I read the book, I don't know how well it will translate, and I wonder if they'll adjust the ending. Either way, I'll see it.

Mad Max minus the desert?

The book describes many scenes where there was nothing but ash; Basically everything is burned down.

I enjoyed the book, and Viggo Mortensen is probably my favorite actor, so I will not miss this one.

I first read The Road in the summer and I'm currently reading it again. I'd say it's my favorite book of all time but I'm not really looking forward to the movie, it seems to easy too mess up.

Also, does the book ever say it's in a post nuclear setting or is it just assumed? The "low concussions", burnt trees, and ash seem to point to it but I don't think it is ever explicitly stated.

Whatever happened, it killed off most animals though, right?

Not necessarily, the book is set years after the event because the boy was born after it and he isn't helpless so I'd say it's been at least 5 years. My guess is that all the animals were killed off by people needing something to eat during this period of time. Also, didn't the boy see a dog at one point, or was that his imagination?

I think my biggest disappointment with the book was that it wasn't stated what had happened, I was (and still am) pretty curious what happened.

i think i remember there were fish in it, like maybe dead fish washed up on shore or something. They wouldnt have been around that long if they werent alive after the apocalyptic event

World War Z and Alice in Wonderland are the only movies that come to mind at the moment.

Ohh and how can I forgot .. Hunter S Thompson's The Rum Diaries. Although I'm starting to wonder if this is ever gonna come out.
