At least it is better than xplay's game of the year....Fable II

I really hate these things because they are CLEARLY subjective and typically you're comparing apples to oranges to bananas and trying to rank which one tastes the best.

I'm sure there will be someone who will post "GOW2 was better" and then there will be someone who will think Dead space and then resistance 2 and then.....

I wish in instances like these, they would just LIST the best games and give an explaination, instead of ranking or giving awards. Rankings only work best when it comes to wins/losses or clear cut figures like money.

Is Fable 2 not worthy? I think it's by far the best game this year.

Well I'm glad to see that MGS4 won, since I really loved that game.

But holy shit... the mere fact that fare like Braid, Burnout Paradise, and NHL 0-fuckin-9 made it onto the list of finalists is a little sad.

I was very disappointed in Fable looking back on it. Very little difficulty and/or challenge with a completely blown ending.

I am very glad that Resistance 2 won FPS of the year at gametrailers.

You can't be fucking serious. Maybe if the category was most fucked up twisty ass hard to follow plot in game I could see it winning.

My best gaming experience so far this year is easily Fallout 3.

I'm currently playing it right now and if I'm not mistaken the story itself was better in fable 1.

And I do think that MGS should have won, It was a great game, and they managed to completely tie up just about all the loose ends even the mess that was MGS2.
Although I don't think they explained why Meryl was alive, oh well maybe I just missed it.

Answering every question about a totally fucked up story during a game DOES NOT make the game good.

I think a LOT of MGS fans are confusing getting questions answered with good gaming. The game sucked as far as gameplay is concerned. It was a pretty CG movie with sneaky/action parts here and there.

Every game that came out this year had some huge fucking problems. I enjoyed Fallout 3 a lot but it's not GOTY material. Dead Space and Ninja Gaiden 2 were the only games that really blew me away. I don't understand the Fable love either. It's a button masher with half of a harvest moon game glued onto it.

Mgs4 was a huge disappointment. The worst in the series by far. I can think of 20 or so games more worthy.

MGS4 is a poorly designed and barely interactive game in the last half of the game. Wouldn't be so bad if the story wasn't such grade school level anime-ish tripe, but it is just that

I didn't play NHL09 but Braid and Burnout Paradise are great. I don't know about Game of the Year but they were lots of fun.

Sorry that award still goes to MGS2 as worst in the series. Wtf at raiden, the story was by far the worst in the series, and MGS4 had to find some way to fix the plot mess in MGS2.

LOL! Congratulations to HotShotX for winning this prestigious award. A lot of us fought long and hard to get this recognition but it looks like you have edged us all out. I hope you understand the responsibility that comes with being Fanboy of the Year and use your powers only for good. ;)

Dead space was a horribly obvious rip off of Event horizon. Other than a fully integrated hud the game does nothing new in the survival horror genre. I had fun with Dead Space but it isnt GOTY material. Ninja Gaiden 2 is a hack n slash on a horribly dated engine.

I think you overlook good gaming for gore/blood. SHAME.

Fallout 3 is probably the most reasonable choice for Game Of The Year. Not everything is going to fit everyone's tastes, but I think just from a quality standpoint, Fallout 3 was better executed and on a higher level than almost anything else I played this year.

Metal Gear 4's goofy plot was an absolute step in the wrong direction after MGS3. Johnny Akiba, The Deus Ex Big Boss, and the paper thin connections to MGS3's characters were all unwelcome additions and absolutely ruined the game. The story was a trainwreck, and it had barely 50% of a game inside it's 15-ish hours. We should be moving away from that contrived bullshit and more towards the way Portal, Half-Life, Bioshock, and Fallout 3 tell their stories. It's more appropriate to the medium, more grown up, and more engaging than MGS4's multiple 30+ minute cutscenes. Just terrible.

Also, radien stops an aircraft carrier with his legs. He's also a robot. But not really. It's also funny when people poop their pants. Finally, Boobs. That's as "deep" as MGS4 ever gets.

How predictable and safe of them....classic Gamespot.

Something about MGS4's story felt forced, I guess I felt that there was too much being squeezed into one game or period of time. I wish more of the new and less of the old was developed on. For example the beautiful assassins, it would have been nice to get a more involved and detailed approach to their stories. Instead they did exactly what the fans demanded, which ultimately isn't what a fan needs because the whole story ends up as soulless as a fanfiction. Don't get me wrong, I understand why some of the characters popped up for this supposed epic finale, but the way it was handled was unnatural, and predictable all at the same time.

On the flip side 4 improved on the controls greatly and the gameplay seems to be at its best, I just wish there was more of it. Technically an amazing experience through and through though, in the same way MGS2 was on the ps2. Online mode is solid too.

Fanservice overload for me though. A shame because it really is the best looking and controlling MGS yet. Not saying I didn't enjoy it or that it's not an a great game, but it was a disappointment nonetheless.

Yeah, that's another major disappointment, after the mostly good characterization of the bosses in previous MGS games. MGS3 dropped the ball here a bit, but they all had their weak ones. See: Decoy Octopus, Fatman, and that flamethrower dude from MGS3.

All of the MGS4 bosses were very hollow and more figures than characters. You didn't find anything out until after killing them in a brief 10 min monologue by Drebin.

The problem with Ninja Gaiden 2 is that they changed the engine to supplement more mass murder. It's not dated at all. I dare you to find a single better combat engine in all of gaming. I bet Ninja Gaiden's will stay in at least the top five if you know what you're talking about. The only two that are comparable are God of War (despite being very user friendly) and Devil May Cry.

And yes, Dead Space deeply emulates Event Horizon... but there hasn't been an Event Horizon game. Different media forms borrow from each other. Dead Space provided a unique experience. Saying it ripped off of Even Horizon is like calling Mass Effect a Star Trek rip off.

For the record, I agree that neither of these are GOTY material, but your explanations of why aren't really convincing.

Do you know how many times I fell asleep driving around in GTA IV cause I had to go on fucking play dates with annoying people? Almost as many times as I fell asleep during MGS4 cut scenes.

Good choice. I haven't played Fallout 3 yet, but the only thing I would change in MGS4 is to add 2 or 3 more hours of game play in the last few chapters. Other than that it was great. And I don't care how ridiculous the story is. I still enjoyed it.

jer7583
12-27-2008, 05:55 PM
Yeah MGS4 would really benefit from some bonus chapters that are just appended sneaking sequences. Because they stuff they did in Chapter 1 and parts of Chapter 2 were really good. It's a shame that only makes up about 1/3 of the game, though.

Good choice, definitely my GotY. I know a lot of people are too turned off the fact you watch the game more than you play it but it was a damn fine experience I thought. And I thought the final moments (I never pressed the triangle button so hard or so fast in my life) of the game was such a fucking amazing way to finish the story...

The only other games worthy of GotY mention are GTAIV and Fallout 3.

I have to agree that the part with him struggling through the oven was pretty epic. It didn't make a lot of sense from a logical/story perspective, but it was epic.

YOu've said that a lot, and right now I'm disagreeing with you, but I want to know what in the world would you have like to have different about MGS4, now I loved MGS4, but I'm wondering what more you wanted from the game.

I don't have a problem giving the game GOTY honors; look Konami worked hard on the game, and they're probably not going to make the revenue that they deserve or could have made should the game been multiconsole, so GOTY honors is the least they could get for their hard work, don't take that away from them.

jer7583
12-27-2008, 06:44 PM
What I would have liked is to have had a game through each of the chapters. The sneaking scenarios in the first two chapters are so awesome. Starting at chapter 2 the game starts to wrest control from the player over time until we reach the game's climax, where ocleot takes over, which is entirely non-interactive. There were so many scenes that could have been done better and been really fun to play as gameplay, but instead I'm sitting here watching a shitty anime.

It just seemed lazy. It's far easier to craft a slick looking, flashy cutscene vs. put the player in that position and make them feel like the badass on the screen. Plus chapter 3's slow paced and nonsensical sneaking section was one of the most boring gaming experiences of the year.

Yeah, working hard doesn't qualify you for success always. Bethesda worked longer on Fallout 3 than Kojipro worked on MGS4, I'm pretty sure. At least as long. Fallout 3 started production around when Oblivion was anounced, I believe. I could be mistaken.

Ah. But I'm having so much fun with Banjo Kazooie right now so please go fuck yourself in the ass with your random assumptions. I never said Dead Space or Ninja Gaiden 2 were GOTY material I only said they were the games I enjoyed the most this year. Ninja Gaiden 2 is one of the most intense and brutal action games ever. The fact that you call it a hack N slash is completley idiotic unless your talking about Ninja Gaiden 2 for NES. Dead Space is without a doubt the most atmospherically terrifying games I've ever touched and the fact that it is inspired by event horizion makes it even more enjoyable to me. You do know that Event Horizon is a movie not a game right? Of course nothing I say will change your mind. With your Fallout 3 avatar I know your a zealot for Oblivion with guns.
