View Full Version : Man talks during movie, gets shot

This story should be on every screen before the trailers. Maybe then people would finally shut their popcorn holes.

They were watching '...Benjamin Button.' Talk about adding injury to insult.
I've forcibly confiscated a few laser pointers in theaters but this is a bit over the top. The guy had his gun clipped inside of sweat pants. Does this sound like an excerpt from a Sopranos episode or what?

Honestly. It doesn't make it ok to shoot someone just because they were talking. If the guy was that mad, he could have gotten the family kicked out of the theatre by grabbing someone who worked there. You morons will support anything in todays world. Maybe the next time someone doesn't like the clothes you are wearing they can go ahead and shoot you...but that's ok, because we've all been annoyed by other people before. Real morons of this story...half of CAG.

I hate people who talk during movies. Even if my friend leans over and says something to me, I hate that. I hate when people exclaim things during movies.
Seriously, just sit down, shut up, and watch the film.

Interesting word choice, lilboo.
In all seriousness, while the guy (obviously) didn't necessarily deserve to be shot, there is no point in seeing a film if you're just going to talk during it.
If I paid for something, I want to be able to enjoy it. Someone talking over a film decreases that enjoyment.

Normally unnecessary acts of violence and/or insanity would cause me to shake my head in further disbelief over how fucked up our society has become.
This, however, deserves a standing ovation. If I were the theater manager I'd give the man free tickets for life, just to make sure the audience always behaves themselves out of fear.
I wont condone the guy getting shot but lets be honest, how hard is it to be courteous in a fucking movie theatre while the actual movie is going?

i wish i could've shot the people in the theater i went to the other night, except instead of one guy talking it was everybody in the movie i was watching. We got the owner to come in to tell everybody to stop talking and they basically just told him to shut up. The girl sitting right behind me was talking on the phone. Not whispering to tell the person that called that she couldnt talk because she was in the movies, but talking loud as hell with her phone on speaker phone just carrying on a conversation.
As a side note when told to turn off their cell phones by the owner they said they didnt have to because obama is president now. Hmmm

Question... What do movies cost these days again? Where do these kids get the money to go. Sadly, I know the answer... mommy and daddy. That's why they don't give a shit about anything and why they shouldn't procreate but will...
Anyway, Why in gods name would anyone go to the movies again? Especially when there's a perfectly good flat screen and free copy of the movie to watch?

Here are some simple rules to going to a theater, for those who aren't in the know...
1) DO NOT TALK UNLESS YOU'RE SAYING "EXCUSE ME"
2) TURN OFF YOUR DAMN CELL PHONE! Text messaging still has a light, and even though you aren't talking, seeing a glaring bluish light can drive a man like me insane
3) DO NOT TAKE KIDS TO A 'R' MOVIE! You dumb fuck, leave them at home or with a friend.
4) YOU'RE NOT COOL BY SCREAMING OUT RANDOM SHIT.
If people followed these rules, nobody would get capped...

Uh, it doesn't say anywhere in the article that the kid was talking, it said the family was talking, never specifying the kid was talking.
Cialella told the family sitting in front of him in the theater on Christmas Day to be quiet, police said.
An argument ensued while others at the Riverview Movie Theatre watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

As long as he didn't die, I find this story gratifying. Especially if this asshole was the type who talked even after he was politely asked to be quiet. And honestly, babies should be banned from movie theaters, etc. Why the fuck would you bring a baby to a movie? Either get a baby-sitter or tough luck ->no movie bitch. And to the guy saying that this is a "slippery-slope situation". No. This is one of those times when a person is fucking with you, thus self defensive measures must be taken ;). Either go outside and talk, stop talking in general, or get shot in the leg/arm/etc =).

While I am personally opposed to shooting someone for talking during a movie, I still think that this story should be told before each and every movie shown in a theater. It should be up on the screen along with the movie trivia and the "Silence your Cell Phone" message. If enough people saw this story, it might convince a few to shut the hell up during the movie.

The shooter is being charged with Attempted murder because he indeed was trying to kill him.
No "ohh it only hit him in the arm."
You know how close your arms are to your chest and/or head?
That sweatpants wearing fool is no marksman, he was aiming to kill, an unarmed man, in front of his family, with no regards at all.
Recently I've stumbled onto a thread here that told the story of a CAG member, can't really recall his name, a personal friend of a MOD, that was stabbed and killed in a senseless argument.
Needless to say thread was filled with R.I.P.s and condolences.
Now a story of a nameless stranger that was doing nothing more than an act that annoys and irritates some people, was almost killed in front of his family.
And what do we get?
"LOL! That Motherfucker deserved it"
"Give that shooter a medal"
Now i know that most of you guys didn't mean what you said and it was only a poor attempt at humor.

I doubt anyone here is genuinely in favor of this behavior but there is a certain pleasure to be had when a barbarian does something extreme that the civilized have contemplated if all restraint were removed. As Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, said: "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing."
Sam Kinison also comes to mind. In his act he had a routine about violence against women. The rant essentially went, "I don't condone it but I understand it. I don't think you should do it but I know what turns Mr. Hand into Mr. Fist."
This got a big laugh even though most of the listeners had probably never struck a woman and never would.

And name calling! :applause:
I'm actually a libertarian.
And I support everyone's liberty to own any weapon, regardless of how unnecessary or deadly it is.
Name calling? Do you actually deny being an anarchist? Anarchy is a fundamental tenet of libertarianism. This "liberty" you speak of infringes on what our culture has decided is a fundamental right: the right to feel safe from bodily harm. This is why assault (not just battery) is a crime. Do you also oppose laws against assault? Since you consider it within your rights to carry a concealed lethal weapon in movie theatres then you must have no problem with making others feel threatened. That should be just peachy, eh.. maybe someone should follow you around with a loaded gun aimed at your head for a day.
There's absolutely no reason for handguns to be legal. Rifles or whatever, fine, but not handguns. If handguns were illegal it's possible this guy would've been carrying brass knuckes or a knife or something, but at least then the other innocent folks in the theatre would've been safe when he lost his temper.
Libertarians, strict constitutionalists, are anarchists... the world changes over the course of 200 years, that's why our founding fathers made the constitution so malleable, it's a living document, it's intended to adapt to societal norms. In the case of guns, the "liberty" they intended was a well-armed militia to prevent extreme government oppression. They didn't intend on douchebags with concealed lethal weapons losing their tempers in public places. This sort of shit is disgustingly common in bars. Hell, it even happened in a Toys R Us back on Black Friday, it happened in a children's toy store, it's terrifying that some nuts want to defend handguns as a right.

Sorry dumbass, but I would rather have the right to fucking defend myself than be in total fear and pissed that I could not have a weapon should someone try to harm me or a loved one. Stop living in a fantasy world.
Obviously almost anything could be used to harm someone.
However, I would rather take my chances against someone with a sword than an automatic machine gun.
A total ban on handguns would be nice - but only if there was a magic button that could be pressed where they all disappeared.

Why not use a taser to defend yourself? Or, if knives are just as dangerous, why not carry a knife with you instead?
I really think tasers are the perfect self-defense item for those who want to carry a handgun, though.
Guns are too easy. It's really, really easy to pull a trigger in anger (or even on accident), ending a life, perhaps not even the intended life. The same cannot be said for knives.

There's absolutely no reason for handguns to be legal. Rifles or whatever, fine, but not handguns. If handguns were illegal it's possible this guy would've been carrying brass knuckes or a knife or something, but at least then the other innocent folks in the theatre would've been safe when he lost his temper.
Handguns exist for personal protection where a long rifle or shotgun would be impractical. They can also be used for nefarious reasons, like murder. Guess what...my car is a transportation device, and it can also be used for nefarious purposes too.
If you waved your magic wand and made handguns illegal tomorrow, here's what would happen:
Every handgun that was legally registered would be gathered up and destroyed. Since no criminal registers his (most likely illegally obtained) weapon, the population of people owning handguns would largely be made up of thugs. Thugs would now be pretty sure that every well-dressed businessman they intend to mug or rob would likely NOT be carrying an illegal pistol......and so crime would increase. there would be a run on shotguns for home protection.
Now, you'll of course say "but where to criminals GET their weapons? Huh? HUH?"...right...usually stolen from legal places/homes/etc. So that means thugs wouldn't get guns anymore......since they wouldn't be able to steal them IF we ban them!!!
Wrong.
The same underground shipping industry that keeps the world flowing in Extacy, Pot, Cocaine, Crack and Herion would add "pistols" to their list and guess what....Thugs would have access to handguns again, while Joe Q. Public would not.
Simply put, unless you ban the production of handguns all over the earth,a nd hire a billion new police officers to enforce it (everyone gets manditory pat-downs every day and if you have a handgun you immediately get sent to prison for 10 years)......then no ban of handguns will work, because the overwhelming odds are that criminals carrying them would never get caught, and honest civillians carrying them illegally would be too afraid to use them in self defence for fear of incarceration.
Bans don't work.
prevent extreme government oppression. They didn't intend on douchebags with concealed lethal weapons losing their tempers in public places. This sort of shit is disgustingly common in bars. Hell, it even happened in a Toys R Us back on Black Friday, it happened in a children's toy store, it's terrifying that some nuts want to defend handguns as a right.
omfg.....
40,000,000 gun owners in the USA and 3 of them went batshit crazy, so lets ban em all!
There's 500,000,000,000 porno movies out there...but ONE dude watched one and then snatched a kid, lets ban them too! OH OH...fatties are killing our health care providers, lets ban Potato Chips! OH OH! Did you see that guy get drunk and run over an entire pre-school? LETS BAN BOOZE, ITS EVIL! Because you know, if YOU dont like it, it should be banned.
Personally if I had the magic wand I'd ban religions, but thats just me.
You know if we used the lowest common denominator to guide this countries' direction we'd still be living in fucking caves....
And PS: I dont know what redneck wonderland you live in, but I haven't heard of anyone getting shot in a bar in like 20 years where I am (North East)... :P (WHICH I may add....is an illegal place to carry a firearm, even if it IS registered and you have a valid concealed-carry permit...in several NE states you can't have a weapon near a school, in a bar or restaurant that serves alcohol...its pretty stupid actually but whatever...its the law).

But for the few that meant it and reply again and again with some form of an excuse for this guy's action.
I really don't have anything to say to those people.
Truth is everybody does annoying shit that is not limited to talking in the theatre.
So next time you cut off someone in traffic, bump into someone, farts in an elevator, etc.

The values of "our culture" do not reflect mine. I don't believe in the right to "feel safe from bodily harm." In fact, I believe that this "right" infringes on our liberties.
I don't believe it's anyone's right to carry a concealed weapon anywhere. It's their liberty to, as long as they don't infringe on anyone else's liberties (in this case, the liberty of the business owner to decide whether or not he bans weapons in his establishment). Suggesting that you have the right to carry a concealed weapon would mean that the government would have to supply the weapons to everyone who wants one. Rather, having the liberty to do so means that, if you have the means to afford a weapon, you can bring it to any public place, or any private establishment that has not banned weapons.
And no, the values of anarchy clash with those of libertarianism. Traditional anarchists are against any established institution, and they do not support the ideals of capitalism. Libertarianism respects private insitutions. Huge, huge difference.

I live in the northeast and there is usually a shooting everyday. At least. Usually kids under 20, too.
The newspapers front page is always about gun crimes.
I'm sick of NRA members screaming about the 2nd amendment. That shit was written over 200 years ago now. It needs to be updated to better fit here and now.
I believe people should be able to own guns, though. Simply because it would be too frightening if the only people allowed guns were law enforcement. But for every instance of self protection there are a lot more instances of crime.

Pack theaters, people munching Popcorn with their mouth open, dropping shit, opening and closing their light bright cell phones to *check* who text messaged them and in some cases to start a text message conversation during the movie (this during TDK :bomb: right next to me) and so on.
Some of these people just need to be *taken away* by the staff and *silenced* the proper way (use your imagination folks) when they start talking.

A good friend of mine feels the same way. However he is getting tired of paying high ticket prices and even more outstanding prices for popcorn and soda. Honestly, there should be more "Bring your own shit to eat" instead of more talking in the theater cause that movie theater food is expensive. When I saw Spiderman 3 at midnight last year, that was a HUGE mistake. Why? Because my theater was full of fucktards and drunk bastards who wouldn't shut up. Heck one bitch told other guy across the way to shut up, he responded by saying you shut the fuck up or I beat the fuck outta ya. Worse movie experiance ever :(

True on the flights deal. Sometimes you just have to man up and tolerate a little noise, if you're that oversensitive then just stay home.
As for talking in theaters, it's very rude. Noone should be shot for it, but let's not kid ourselves that people haven't been shot for similar social infractions throughout the history of our country, hell some of our presidents have shot someone for less.

I remember on the flight back from Maui in 2000, they were showing an episode of "Welcome Back, Kotter".
Since we didn't want to buy headphones, I provided the dialogue for my future wife.
A few people were annoyed until a very excited older man burst into the scene and I perfectly lipsynched, "I'm from the future and I'm here to stop John Travolta from making Battlefield Earth."
I suppose somebody would have said something, but ...
1. The "audience" had been warmed up by McKenna, the lovable 4 year old who screamed for two hours straight and kicked my future wife's seat two or three hundred times.

2nd degree assault would be, I think, 5-10 years in prison if he had used a weapon other than a gun. In some states, using a gun doubles the penalty. That would be 10-20 years in prison, court costs and future civil court judgments. I wouldn't call that a slap on the wrist.

Well that would be possible but he better have a hell of a damn good lawyer that can twist the shit out of the the facts.
Regardless of the weapon, he has to prove that his original intend was not to kill the man but only to hurt/wound him.
Even with a low caliber gun he has to prove to the judge beyond a reasonable doubt that he wasn't aiming to kill.
It would be hard to murder someone by shooting them in the foot.
A low caliber can easily kill if shot in the head or chest so just because it happen to strike a hand or foot by shear luck does not make it any less malicious.
The Attempted Murder law is the intention of killing not just the circumstances.
If you shoot to kill but had shitty ass aim, should you get less time then a person that had good aim but with the same intentions?
Seeing that it was in a theater, which is presuming dark during a movie, and the man was probably moving around a little, its hard to believe that it couldn't have hit elsewhere.

It is a tough case to make either way. Easy to prove who did the shooting I assume--lots of witnesses.
But how so you prove that he was trying to shoot in the arm, leg or wherever, vs. trying to kill and simply missed.
I put that burden on the defense personally, as I have no sympathy for someone that shoots another human being. That's intent to kill IMO, unless you have strong evidence that the person deliberately shot just to wound. Assault with deadtly weapon and attempted murder should almost always go hand in hand IMO. You don't attack someone with a dangerous weapon if you aren't trying to kill them (or at the least don't care if you kill them).

Didn't this happen in one of the 'Scary Movie' movies?
One time we went to a theater in the less economically developed area of the city and this lady was called in the theater, so of course she answers and starts talking. Soon enough there's a 'shhh' followed by several 'shhhs' and then we hear her say to the person she's talking to "oh that's nothing - they just trying to get me to hang up because we at the movie theater" Finally after about 20 more seconds her friend grabs her arm and gently pushes her up, pointing to the exit.

The only time I shed a tear about a Dog dying in a movie was during the scene in I am Legend were Nevil has to kill his dog off screen because she was infected by the virus after the dog fight. I was like holy shit, to put down his only friend that has kept him sane all these years living in NYC was just a lot.
What shocks me most is all the Cag's that are bitching about people talking in a theater. I don't have this problem because I only go to the movies in the afternoon when the price is CHEAPER!
As far as this guy shooting the other, he should have just punched the clown.
