View Full Version : Why does Sonic the Hedgehog suck?

So, my little brother really likes those Sonic the Hedgehog flash game remakes, and I figured I might grab him Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360, but it has gotten rotten reviews. His a young'n, so he might not be as much of a critic, but why exactly does it fail? I was hoping to nab it on a clearance shelf or something for cheaps, or should I just completely steer clear? The game seems similar to the (Really fun I think) Dreamcast 3D sonic, and while the Gamecube games were less than stellar (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or w/e) they worked well and had that overwhelming sense of speed.

Any info is appreciated.

My son loves sonic and he is only 4 years old. I got him the same sonic game.... I don't personally care for it (give me old school side scrolling sonic any day) but he likes it mostly cause he don't know better but he enjoys it thats what matters.

I think the reviews were bad cause people expected more and/or better and that's not what they got.

The camera is wonky as well.

Its sorta broken, and really frustrating at times.

If the kid has a low tolerance lv, he's going to pitch fits left & right.

I never liked the series much anyway as just going fast was:

1. Boring compared to all the power ups in Mario games and other platformers.
2. Made it straight action with little incentive to explore.
3. Led to too much trial and error frustration as you're going to fast to avoid things unless you know they're coming many times.

With the 3D games you still have some of that stuff, plus all the added collection stuff, crappy cameras etc. that make the games suck even for people who liked the series and weren't annoyed by the stuff above.

The thing with Sonic the Hedgehog, is that there is a good game in there. It's hidden away with the atrocious storyline (Sonic winds up sucking the face of a human girl, kissy kissy wink wink, and there's a time travel paradox element to it where basically at the end of the game, none of the events in the story ever occured)
Also, as mentioned before, the game is incredibly broken. Sonic Adventure had its glitches, but this has way more. You'll randomly drop through the ground-- the camera is complete crap also. I really did like some of the level design though, and it really feels like there's a good game in there somewhere. They just rushed it to get it out by Christmas.

Unless you get this game for literally two or three dollars, you should really drop the extra money for Sonic Unleashed. They did such a better job with it.

Also, just to disagree with Dmaul... I really hate when people associate Sonic with simply holding right and going. The Sonic games have always had the Green Hill Zones, but there's an equal amount of levels where the action slows down a lot and you have traditional platforming.

Oh I know. And that's why I played the games as those bits were fun. But still a bit dull without having power ups etc. as it was just straight platforming which I enjoy but not as much as something like the Mario games with all their power ups, hidden exits etc. etc.

For fuck's sake, you're right for a change.

Substitute "Castlevania" for "Sonic" and you're still correct.

Get him Sonic Heroes (I think it plays on the 360). Its a billion times better, a lot cheaper, and its pseudo-2d/pseudo-3d.

That's a good point, and I definitely see where you're coming from with that.

Also, I agree with picking up Sonic Heroes. Most people trashed it oddly, but it was really one of the better Sonic games in 3D. Controls are tough to master, but there's a lot to like about it. The stages are very reminsicent of old Sonic... out of the human world and back to the traditional style of environments.

It could be tough for the OP's little brother though, because that control scheme can be tough.

Thanks for the idea, I was hoping to suck some gamerscore out of it but I could go xbox. Sonic and 3D mesh quite nicely in some situations (Sonic Adventure for the DC was bitchn') and Sonic Heroes was better than people gave credit to it. I had it on the GC and thought it was fun. I'm not gonna pay 45 smackers for my little brother for unleashed. I love him, but not 45 bucks worth.

It's not that it's 3D that makes it bad. It's that Sonic Team can't seem to make a good Sonic game anymore, period.

The Sonic Adventure series was fine. It all went down hill after Heroes.

Here is the rule to Sonic.

If it didn't originate on a Sega platform originally, it sucks. I have NOT played a Sonic game I enjoyed that has not originated on a Sega console.

Yes I even played the GBA ones, Sonic Rush on the DS and I thought they were meh lackluster attempts.

Personally my advice is they are releasing a Sonic Genesis collection for the 360 that has like every good classic 2D sonic game except for CD, might want to check that out.

I disagree. Sonic was going downhill even with the Adventure games. It's just that in the transition from Adventure to Heroes, they went from a mostly gentle slope to a free-fall.

1. You're a dick.

2. If you really love him, get him Sonic Mega Collection Plus. It's playable on the 360. I don't know how well since I don't have it myself (I have the original cartridges), but however well the games on that disc play, it must play better than the newer 3D Sonics.

3. Sonic Heroes, though, is a decent game, and it is also backwards compatible. Again, I don't know how well it runs on a 360, but it was decent on my original XBOX.

Sonic sucks because Sonic Team is basically a sweatshop and they all hate their lives.

“Sonic Team are a relic from a past age who have overstayed their welcome. For the same marketing reasons that their name was initially kept (and has since backfired) they should be dissolved - it may already be too late for NiGHTS (and I really hope it isn’t and they manage to turn it around, which with Iizuka-san’s passion for the project is a possibility), but for the good of the company’s image; for the future of Sega’s other prestigious IPs and lastly for its iconic mascot it needs to be done… before they release another Sonic game with a transforming Evil ‘Night’ Sonic who looks like a werewolf and can stretch his arms out Dhalsim-style. It will happen, mark my words.“

Some things just cannot be modernized. Beat Em Ups, like Streets of Rage, died off and were replaced with action games. Sonic works best in 2-D, but, I guess you could say, 'games don't do 2-D anymore.'

Technical issues in the game are a big thing. Lots of slowdown/framerate problems and glitches.
