So I picked up the Wall-e 3 disc special edition at Best Buy but it wasn't till I got home till I realized I picked up the DVD version and I had taken off the shrinkwrap. They're the same price but obviously not the same product. I haven't opened it yet either. The thing is I picked it up in the Blu-Ray section so I didn't give it a second thought.

Up to BB to decide if they'll take it back or not. They don't have to, as you opened it, and all they are required to do is give you the same title back again.
My guess is that it's a 50/50 shot if they'll return it.

Worth a try, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I tried to return a DVD that was damaged for the same product and they gave me a hard time.

I highly doubt they will accept the return. Maybe if you say it would nto play they would replace with a new copy, then return the new copy at a later date. Although, they may open the new copy to prevent this....heard of that before.

Yea, for my defective item, after much argument, they did give me a new copy, but they did insist on opening it in store before hand.

Go with honesty, explaining yourself and I'd make sure to paint the picture of you being pretty stupid to make the mistake. In situations like this, customer service reps are much more responsive to those who recognize the fact that they fucked up.
If that doesn't work, there's always Craigslist.
EDIT: Oh, and smile a lot.

You took off the shrinkwrap but like you said you didnt open it yet. That means the sides should be sealed so it shouldnt be a problem.
Might be a hard sell since all the Bluray DVDs have those blue cases so it is pretty obvious which version it is before you open it. But if the security seals are still on it at the top, then you probably have a better chance.

I would normally agree with you, but in the case of the Wall-e DVD, it kind of looks like the Bluray version. They both have a slipcover and, if you were just to glance at it, it really does kind of look like it could be the HD version.
As far as returning it, I would just go with what the others have said so far: be super nice and readily admit that you made a stupid mistake. It'll go a long way.

50/50 on this one. Any movie you return there, they open it up in store at the customer service desk.
just go with everyone else and say you weren't sure which version it was until you looked at it. bring your receipt to.
Honestly though I do think you have a good chance, just be polite and act stupid.

You took off the shrinkwrap but like you said you didnt open it yet. That means the sides should be sealed so it shouldnt be a problem.Assuming that's one thing in his favor, then that might be what gets him to return it or not. If it's still sealed with the security seal, then it's not completely open.

But if the security seals are still on it at the top, then you probably have a better chance. That's a bigger issue, unless it's one with a slipcover, which makes it more DVD-like in its appearance over one without a slipcover.

I was able to exchange it and I payed the difference since it was $5 more. The copy they gave me doesn't have the slipcover but oh well.

When I went to exchange my defective copy of Carnivale season 2 they didn't open the new one they gave me. But I guess maybe the employees were just lazy lol

Glad to hear they did take it back for you. That was a surprise.

Otherwise, you could return the unopened item.

Indeed. I had to double-check my Wall-E for that very reason.

if they don't have the title in stock then they will refund your money or give you store credit. So buy all the wall-e's in the store then return the defective one for a refund then return all the one's you bought to empty the store.

doubtful... I have Weeds season 2 with the wrap on and the best buy sticker still on it, they wouldn't even take it back for store credit because i no longer have the receipt.

3 disk. I was thinking of asking for it but I don't feel like it. Slipcovers are a hassle anyway, I'm thinking of throwing away my Dark Knight cover. Or I could try my luck getting one from Blockbuster.

Someone's not a rewards member. That system tracks all of your purchases and you dont need a receipt for returns.

Glad to hear it worked out, like i said before I was pretty sure they would take it back. Reason being is I work at a Best Buy and normally partake in those decisions myself hehe.
And if you purchased that Weeds with a credit card we could look up the receipt as well.

However, you can look up the purchase information on the Reward Zone, give the receipt information to the customer service rep, and they can look it up for you.

Slipcovers are a love/hate thing I think.
I personally dislike them, because I would rather see the plastic blue case on my shelf than the paper slip cover. Just a personal preference I guess.

I've never had any store open an exchanged item Ever.
They usually just make a note on the original receipt or print another receipt.

Find someone that's going to buy the one you just bought, but tell them your situation and see if they will buy the Blu-ray and trade you.

My solution:
1. Become a hot chick
2. Attempt to exchange with a nerdy looking dude at customer service.
3. ???
4. Profit!!! ...I mean, get it exchanged!!!

I would play the "my mom bought it thinking it was Blu-Ray since she got it from the Blu-Ray section, I tried to stop her when I saw her opening it"...blah blah blah...maybe they'll feel sympathy.
