Microsoft's plan for 1 vs 100 (http://kotaku.com/tag/1-vs-100/) is for the multiplayer game show to run for 13-week seasons. Each season will offer players the chance to gain 200 Achievement Points. New season, new Achievements.
Because 1 vs 100 is free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers (who have to pay annually for Gold, of course), these will be some of the cheapest Achievement Points achievable on the system.
No word yet on what the Achievements will be.

This must be so, because who wants to play a game show that includes the following question (which your DME got right!): "What country is the 2008 movie Australia set in? 1) New Zealand, 2) Australia, 3) Papua New Guinea"

More Complex Than Wheel of Fortune: Maybe Microsoft will mail people an instruction manual, and maybe it was just too early in the morning when Microsoft was showing the game, but there's a chance that first-time players will find the rules 1 vs 100 (http://kotaku.com/tag/1-vs-100/) baffling. Let's break this down: 1v100 will be run live on Fridays and Saturdays at scheduled sessions that last a couple of hours. You play as your Xbox avatar. Any Xbox Live Gold member can be a member of the audience, aka the Crowd. This lets them answer questions and be linked to three local players or friends in an Xbox Live party. Crowd players earn chances to win sweepstakes prizes. Playing in the Crowd also increases the likelihood that the player will be chosen to join… the Mob. That Mob is the "100" part of 1 vs 100. Members of the Mob see their avatar seated against a big wall a la the Brady Bunch show opening, if the Brady Bunch got randy and had 100 members in the family. Every round of the game sees a new "1" selected from the Mob. The core of the game involves the 1 and the 100 answering the same trivia questions. If the 1 gets it wrong, he or she is knocked out of competition. If a member of the 100 gets it wrong they're dropped from the 100. For every question the 1 gets right, he or she amasses potential Microsoft Points winnings and has the option to cash out. But he or she needs to outlast everyone in the 100. The 100 can win prizes as well, but only once 40 players have been eliminated. The Mob's prize can be a free Xbox Live Arcade game, pre-determined by the show's organizers (which you may already own). Got all that?

And There Are More Rules: I haven't even explained the non-live, every-weekday mode called Extended Play in which everyone is in the Mob and winnings count toward chances to be picked to be in the Mob for the live games. Complex as this all sounds, we were having fun.

Some of the things they liked about it:
Non-Invasive Advertising: All the Microsoft reps' discussion of Sprint sponsorship and Honda ads seemed ripe for disaster. But the ads in 1 vs 100 weren't a bother at all. The virtual game show set is branded with Sprint signage. A between-sessions break throws more ads onto the screen, but even during that break a player can call up their stats and study their performance.

It's Live: Some of the announcer chatter during the live games of 1 vs 100 is canned. But host Chris Cashman will call out performances and talk about what's happening in the game. He'll also call players up, as he did with me, and record quick interviews that get played during the breaks. He chatted with me about my performance. I accused him of being as shady as the guy in Slumdog Millionaire. He laughed it off.

Everyone Gets A Shot: Microsoft has the right idea about getting new people into the hot-seats for this game. They estimate that up to 1500 people have a shot at getting in the Mob per live session. And the stats that improve your chance for selection — earned by playing the Live and Extended versions of the game regularly — will be re-set each week. So the elite players shouldn't get all the shots at the glory.

Looks like there's another reason to play it besides the prizes, as each season will offer 200 achievement points, so it's an XBLA game that automatically refills with more points as time goes on.

Well I guess it depends more on what the question is, but that picture in the OP, all I typed in was "late night married" which took about 1 second and Letterman popped up 3 spots down. Of course, I wasn't in a rush to type it, look it up, then run to or switch to my 360 and go to the answer, which would definitely take over 5 seconds for me. But I know there are some people out there that are probably already practicing their cheating skills in anticipation.


The only real way I could see them not having people cheat like that is to have the question come across in a typewriter fashion, one word at a time real fast. They should have the answers already down there available and start a 5 second countdown timer when it's about 2-3 words from the end of the question.

I am downloading the Beta Launch Demo now as I type this. I couldn't find on marketplace but I saw someone on my friends list playing this. When I hit 'Join Session in Progress" it told me that I didn't have the game and I needed to download it. I used the Download Now function and it worked.

I'm not sure, I only found out about because I saw someone on my friends list playing the game. It allowed me to "join session in progress" but then said I didn't have the game.

So it gave me an option to download it, I downloaded it and searched for game library and nothing. On the dashboard nothing. It was saved into my Memory but I couldn't find the option to play. My friend was in the lobby and it owuldn't let me join session in progress anymore, so I dunno.

The more I think about it, I actually don't mind this to much.

I think having it pay-to-play will make it "less" cluttered, since it's also limited to Gold members and you need to be 18 and over for prizes I think you'll have a "better" chance of actually participating in the Mob and what not.

I dunno, probably won't make a big difference but I just don't see any other reason to justify paying per-season regardless of achievemtns and prizes.

It's not on the marketplace and you can't download it untill it's actually running or about to start I assume. Then you just click one of the ads on the Canadian marketplace and it'll give you the option to download it. I almost forgot about playing tonight but I managed to check it out for the first time. It seemed like it would be fun once they have normal questions as every freaking question was Canadian related tonight. I did miserably except a few I somehow knew plus lucky guesses. Hurry up American version!

The main thing I don't like is that they are saying what you do in the extended play everyday will greatly influence your chances of making the crowd, mob and being the one. That's great for those who can play every single day but could rule out casual gamers and 2nd/3rd shift workers. Oh well it's free though so whatever...

They've just been doing beta shows for Canadians and haven't started a season yet, so most of us are expecting beta shows before the season starts.

I managed to actually get into the show tonight via a Canadian friend and I wasn't actually denied entrance, despite using an American account to access it. It was pretty cool, though there were issues with it kicking me back to the lobby and then to the Primetime channel so that I had to start over again to get back in.

All I have to say is "It's about time". :D I'm pretty excited to play it. I loved the game when it was on TV and to have the chance at winning prizes just makes the Xbox Live version even better. Monday is gonna be a good day.

lol I'm assuming you didn't read the OP, which should have been your first stop regardless...

It's the 1 vs. 100(mob) and then there's the "crowd". The "crowd" essentially can be hundreds and hundreds of people at once.

You play along just the same as the 1 and the MOB but you don't win any prizes, though, the better you do in the crowd the more chances you have to actually be selected for the mob or the 1.

Canadian beta lasted a few weeks (3 or 4?) and I think the US beta is probably for stress test purposes, so I think you'll see it happen for atleast the same as the Canadian, maybe more depending on the servers.

Are you downloading the TV episode they put up for free? I got into the Canadian beta and the file wasn't more than 40-50 MB, so I'm not sure what they would be adding for the 10x size difference.

Yeah that was the first episode of the TV show from a few years back. After watching that, it seems even the questions on there were pretty simple, I knew all of them.

Of course neither of the two contestants went past round 6 (second one probably did in episode 2 as she ran out of time and had to come back) so maybe they do get harder.

Just got done playing for over an hour. I went into the room about 5 minutes the first show and I had no problem whatsoever getting in. I was even selected for the mob but the person who was the one really sucked and only went a few questions into the game.

It does suck that no prizes are being given out during the beta.

Anyway, this was pretty cool, glad I was in on the game where the one was the winner. I could see this really catching on. They do a wrap-up (and preshow) which is kind of cool too, having a live announcer helps break up the canned hostess voice.

The announcer did say during the wrap-up that they'd be opening up more slots for Saturday's game, and that they had 50,000 people playing tonight.

I really want to see other games incorporated into this setup.

They didn't update the score after the last question on screen but if you looked at your stats prior to them booting everyone out, you'd see it.

Fun stuff! I was in the crowd the whole session. Sometimes the announcer's voice didn't speak during the breaks and after games but other than that, it was a flawless beta as far as I was concerned.

You'll disappear from the row you sit in as the crowd and appear under the big screen in the middle of the mob, your avatar will have blue (or red once you get a question wrong) lights behind them instead of purple and when it introduces you it'll say the Mob instead of the Crowd.

I had fun with my group. We were in the crowd but it was still enjoyable. I ended up with the largest total by the end because this other guy disconnected for a few minutes and missed most of a round. Otherwise it would have been a lot closer. Interesting to see the trivia relating to other video game brands/franchises, like the Mario stuff and the Heavy Rain question. And yes, LMFAO at 32 C, I was the only one in my group to get that one right somehow.

Same here, someone on my friends list got paired up with me while a friend and I were playing.

I guess I was lucky and didn't have any trouble getting into the game. I jumped in as soon as it was open though on the last 'airing' of it though, 5 minutes early or however soon it was that they let you get in.

But yea, I was pretty surprised that the game is so much fun to play. It was really, really exciting before I realized we didn't actually win anything in the beta...but even after it was fun to just drink with some friends and shout out the answers over Live. I can definitely see a lot of people I know who like to go out to bars on trivia night digging this game a lot, especially when it fully launches at the end of the year.

I know a lot of people are frustrated with not being able to get in last night. But honestly, wouldn't it make sense for them to put a cap on the first show so that it didn't crash the server completely? Not to pour salt in any wounds, but I was able to get in with some friends no problem (but I did also have friends not able to get in).

They had 50,000 people playing last night. If they would have allowed 100,000 in, only for it to crash and burn, and waste everybody's time, it would have been a disaster. Obviously, let's all hope that the service improves, but for the people who did get to play last night, it was a great time.

This is the kind of thing that could sell a system for Microsoft (and like Matt Young mentioned to me last night, it actually creates another good use for the Scene-It buzzers). Yeah, their motion capture camera looks great (if it will even be able to do half of what they claim it can), but MMO gameshows would destroy Nintendo's hold on the casual gaming market. Yeah, soccer mom's and girlfriends love playing Wii bowling, but if they could play their favorite reality/gameshows from the comfort of their own living room...with a live host...AND win real prizes, IT'S OVER!

Seeing it in action was really impressive. Everything ran smooth, and even when a person who was just chosen to be "the one" disconnected, the game didn't miss a beat, and acted as though the person had lost, and selected the next contestant. By the end of the night, everybody was so caught up in answering the questions the fastest, like 80% missed a really easy one, haha.

The question was "At what temperature does water freeze?" With the answers being revealed one at a time, the first thing you saw was 32*...C. Almost everyone had already buzzed in by the time they noticed it said Celsius. It eliminated at least 70% of the mob, the one, and most of the crowd. I'm sure most people got a good laugh out of it, and it ended up being the last question of the night. Overall, I'd say the launch was a huge success.

For some reason though, I kept associating the left most answer as answer "A", and thinking the "A" button corresponded to that answer, the middle was answer "B", thus associated with the "B" button, and the right most answer "C", and for some reason associating it with the "X" button.

I think Netflix and 1 vs 100 are the two best things MS are doing for their core audience, while also expanding their base.

I played last night and it was soo much fun. The questions were done really well. I like how they had a decent amount of video game questions. It also seems like a great platform to hype upcoming games/events. They were talking about E3 last night, but in the future I can see them (for example) having someone from bungie as a special guest right before ODST launches.
