Go to "Main Menu" then select "Options". From there, go to "System Settings" and select "Install" and there you go :)

Anyone just using the PS3 controller and having success with it? I'll most likely be picking this up this weekend and would like to just use the Dual Shock, but if that's unfeasible I'd be willing to pick up a stick.

I'm still using the six axis controller. It works for what it is, but like what people are saying here, it's not the best to use for this game. The way I have my buttons configured, I use my right hand a few times to press L1 and L2. It's weird but I am able to perform all the moves , but its a pain in the ass.
I'm using the PS2 15th anniversary controller to play SF IV and going back to using the DualShock's d-pad is weird, I'm horrible with the regular d-pad now.
That's good to know. That's what I'll be using as well. Is there any input lag?

Fock...I so want this game but won't be buying a stick for another month or so. I'm really torn on whether to get it now and use the Dualshock and have to relearn everything when I get a good arcade stick or just get it and enjoy the game and the hand cramps that come with it.

There really shouldn't be any input lag using the wireless controllers. I didn't have any problems using the Dual Shock 3 with Soul Caliber and there have been sites saying that there is no input lag with the wireless SF4 fight pads/sticks.
Learning a stick doesn't take too long. I played for a couple hours with a stick and I am able to pull off most things consistently with the exception of shoto-super/ultra moves (still whiff those occassionally). And the d-pad on the Dual Shock isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. It's not ideal, but it's serviceable.

I played the original SF Alpha series on PS1 for countless hours with the regular PS1 comtroller and it was sufficient for that game. SFIV retains all the character's moves from SFII and Alpha with minimal changes. I am used to playing the six axis design style controller that Sony's been using since PS1 so its not a biggie for me. Using a tournament stick would have been amazing though.

Yea I agree. I don't using the normal controller but I feel as though I'm missing out on part of the game. I can't seem to pull off any of the cool ultra moves or anything with the regular controller. I'm looking for a fight pad but that seems to be completely pointless. When I picked up the game last night, they had two fight pads left but I didn't know for which system. I guess I will be hunting one down...
By the way, the more I play the game, the better I like it. At first I was not really all that impressed. Then after about an hour of playing, I found myself trying to pull off new moves...and then I was sucked in. Very, very, very good game, and that's coming from someone who doesn't really like or play fighting games.

Oh definitely! I liked the idea of the whole "3D in a 2D environment" concept from the beginning. It gives it a refreshing feeling of old school meets new school kind of thing. It's the way I wanted something like Street Fighter to look like after all of these years.

Holding block on wake-up should allow you to stop garbage like that. And once he's out of range, a nicely placed sweep should take care of it.

Honestly, i feel like SF4 is more "SFex4" than a true addition to the main series. It feels a lot different than the 2D games (particularly in the jumping, and jump attacks).
Additionally, the time-attack modes, and special "combo training" modes were something that I've always associated with EX.
Not complaining- just saying...

Thank you!!! I will try that tonight! I was really pissed off after that match too because it was like the second time I played an online opponent. I just sat there and said, "You've got to be sh*tting me" over and over again as he kept doing it. I just couldn't believe that someone was actually taking his/her own time to beat someone so cheaply. I would pull that move if the other person was better than me because that's called a strategy. Using it on a new player (I haven't played Street Fighter since SFII on the SNES and it was my second time playing online) is low class. They knew I wasn't that good because they were killing me within a second and used this move to finish me off. Oh well, I managed to win my first match online last night and then put it away lol. I was like, "Hell ya! Go out with a bang!" Very cool game.

I love this game soo much. ohvermie we have to play again now that I had a chance to really get into it and unlock a few things. Plus I got a lot of trophies last night. Got my 10 wins in a row trophy :) now everything else will just come in time. only trophy that I am worried about is getting the silver for beating it on the hardest difficulty and beating gouken. other than that everything else is possible.
I will add everyone else in this thread that I didn't add last night.

I was having the same issue but honestly, I didn't notice any lag during my online play, yellow or red colors be damned. What I did notice was the load times with people who didn't install it and those who did...what a huge difference. When i play against people who install it, there's no load times...totally different story with those who didn't.

I'll be on tonight. I might try to unlock Gouken first, but not like I really care about him since I rarely play shotos anyway. :)
I really want them to bring in multi-user lobbies. It's sad seeing all these people playing SF4 on my friends list and not being able to cram them all into a lobby for massive ass kickings. :)
I haven't seen a fully green connection bar either, but it doesn't seem to matter, the online play is pretty seamless except that time I played with Desklaser and he was using wireless.

Epic vega match last night, that guys is a tricky, poky bugger. Won in 2 rounds but man I had to work for it.
I have a 3 game ranked winning streak right now. I almost lost a match against a very good ryu last night but our connection dropped (i think cause he was in japan). I am frozen in fear to break my streak. I really want to get a 10 ranked winning streak but I feel my Gief needs to be better. I just need to concentrate on green pimp hand and lariat pass fireballs.

Yeah, I was wondering about Blanka too. I lost to a Blanka because I could not close the distance (Blanka Balled me) then when I get close, I get electricuted. Oh I just weak jabbed the blanka ball after awhile but just couldn't close the distance.
What attacks get passed the electric attack (especially for zangief or boxer)?
I hope to learn charge characters.

Trips break electricity. But you have to be barely in range otherwise you end up trading hits.
Not sure if that applies to EX electricity (assuming you can do it because you can do EX Honda hand slaps and EX Chun kicks).

Abel's Tornado Throw seems to have ridiculous priority and is really powerful for a move that's so easy to execute. If you time it and do it to a waking opponent, they're pretty much screwed unless they perform a general move counter on wakeup. Or, that's how it seems anyway, unless I'm missing something while playing as him.

Dude I had the exact same feeling. Even my dad saw me playing it and was like "Why are you playing this? Didn't you play it a long time ago?" I had to explain that this was a new version but he didn't buy it...as always....lol.

Yea Abel is a bitch. I played against him once and that was enough to convince me that if I ever wanted to commit suicide, I'll play against him instead because it's basically the same thing.

Unless someone knows otherwise, it just seems to snuff everything. It might be the same for the other command throws and one of the reasons why Zangief is top tier. The timing is a little tricky, but once that's down, the waking player pretty much has to perform a Shoryuken right away, which would leave him incredibly vulnerable were it blocked. A total guessing game there.
I beat Seth using only Tornado Throws and Ex Tornado Throws. As soon as he wakes up, I perform another one at the right time. He couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it. I guess when I play on a harder difficulty it may show me more ways to counter it.

Depends on if you're a stick or a pad player.
From a quality perspective, the fightpad is an awesomely designed controller, whereas the Soul Calibur 4 stick is a mediocre stick at best... so take that for what you will.

gotcha, i haven't tried the soul calibur stick, just don't feel like shelling out 150 for a tourney stick. So figured I would go with a $50ish stick or $40ish pad.....guess i will wait for a pad then.

Could it be invincible on startup? Yeah, I've been mixing in EX command throws just because they'd have to be stronger/higher priority/quicker by default. But even the normal seems like a real doozy to deal with in that scenario. Good for Abel. Bad for downed opponent.

I dont think any command throws ever have invincibility.
otherwise theyd be the most bullshit broken moves in the face of fighting games.
the strength of command throws are all in their general frame data and throw range.

And the fact that they're throws that can't be low blocked. Or tech hit. And they're powerful. And break through focus attacks.
I suppose that what you say is true about invincibility frames. But it'd be odd for a command throw to have armor properties or soak up a hit. I don't think I've seen that in SF before. Then again, I usually don't pay that much attention to grapplers.

I think god doesn't want me to have the 10 ranked wins in a row trophy.
Got up to fight 10 twice tonight, and both times totally botched it up...
First time I just got cocky and picked Cammy because I had played the guy earlier and mopped up with Blanka... Felt like being a good sport and not picking the same dude again... Bad idea, I suck with Cammy! D:
Second time they just picked someone other than Ryu/Ken/Sagat/Akuma... I literally just was not able to comprehend how to fight against E Honda and just got beat. It was close, I think if it was best of 5 I would've been ok because by round 3 I had some sort of strategy set up and the guy was really just spamming sumo torpedoes (which I think adds insult to injury).
So I think I am just going to say fuck off to that trophy. I don't need it (I really do...)

I flipping knew it. The costume packs are already in the game, we are just paying to unlock them. (except for the free pack from the CE)
for my reference in saying this. the size of the file to open the characters was 118Kb. in Naruto UNS the character updates are 100kb which basically add one mission and unlock a different support character.
so this means basically they are really taking advantage of us.
with that aside I still love this game. Unlocked everyone except Gouken and Seth which I will get around to this weekend. Man Focus attacks really change the dynamic of the game so much. Didn't start using them until last night against bobo.(please forgive me I can't remember you whole screen name at the moment)

Man Focus attacks really change the dynamic of the game so much. Didn't start using them until last night against bobo.(please forgive me I can't remember you whole screen name at the moment)
I have to get into the habit of not freezing like a deer in headlights when people online start abusing me with them. Always get trapped when peeps charge up focus attacks while I'm getting up, I stupidly try to sweep them out of it, and get whacked for fall down, rinse, repeat, toss in an ultra combo/super combo and I'm sent packing. :(

Out of curiosity ... did you lose to Dan?
I couldn't think of a better insult than to give a Dan shirt as a reward (or punishment) for losing to Dan. It might have been a coincidence, but I gotten one after a match up with Dan online and lost.
*hangs head in shame*
Haha, that's awesome. Hopefully that's true so I'll have bestowed a Dan shirt on someone yesterday.

I have a similar issue. I try to c.HK which is useless cause it blocks the first hit >< I've noticed that alot of people aren't used to seeing them though. I'm finding Focus attack to crumple then Tiger Destruction is damn easy to pull off. People tend to try to block the focus or are like me and try to sweep the legs.

on a side note. for some reason I am really enjoying playing as chun li, sakura, and sagat right now. E. Honda is definately a beast.
I haven't used Dhalsim, El Fuerte, Vega, or Rufus yet and I will probably never use Rufus outside of beating the game to get seth.
Is it me or is it so different using guile now? he feels soo toned down now. Like he is now more of a defensive player instead of the offense powerhouse he use to be.

Maybe. I never got into the SNK titles so I personally wouldn't know. However, if that series contains bosses who suddenly have ever power and counter move available in the history of video games, then yes, a cue was taken.
Honestly, how do you go about beating Seth? I did the whole one round, 30 second trick after my 5th try and that didn't do anything. He just kept teleporting and grabbing me from half the screen like Scorpio. I swear I think he yelled "Get over here!" Did I get the wrong version or something?

SNK bosses are ridiciously overpowered. They usually have a single move that will rape you. Sometimes even when blocked. Sometimes they have infinite combos as well. For example Zero from KOF2001 has an infinite that is just him doing the same move over and over again. One of his moves will guard break you even if you block. Most SNK bosses also lack a crouch animation. Luckily they're mostly not playable characters.

Edit: Here's how to get Akuma.
YOU CAN'T USE ANY CONTINUES DURING ANY OF THE MATCHES AND DON'T LOSE A ROUND
MATCH 1: Get a Perfect
MATCH 2-8: Make sure you don't get a perfect, get hit at least once, and DON"T FINISH WITH A ULTRA OR ANY SUPER COMBO. Finish with a regular move just to be safe
MATCH 9: You will face akuma after Seth and you must beat him.

Wow are you serious? No way I'm good enough to meet all of those requirements at once. I hope there is an "unlock all characters" DLC because if not then I will never get to play as Akuma. The bad thing is that you cannot even use a save from someone else because its tied to your PSN tag. Trophies/Achievements have ruined this. Same goes for cheats.

Change difficulty to Easiest, make the number of rounds 1 then cheese with Ryu or Ken. Jump in, HK, crouch, HK then jump back and do it all over again. You'll never get hit. If you have problems with this then you're going to hate getting Gouken.
Gouken - After unlocking Akuma, Sakura, Dan, Cammy, Fei Long, Gen and Rose, complete the game with Akuma. Then get at least 2 perfects and 3 Ultra Finishes and don't use any continues.

I got all the other characters before him you have to get then I tried where it said to get 2 perfects, and 2 ultra's, and don't lose of course that didn't work. Then I tried that other way that said get a perfect on the first match, and don't die. Again Akuma didn't come out. I really want to know how to unlock him xD

I might be alone in thinking this but shouldn't Super combos be assigned to the revenge meter instead? I feel like, since the Ultras do so much more damage, wouldn't it be more logical to be a move you charge up for?
20 seconds in and you or your opponent already has an Ultra while it basically takes a round plus a bit to charge up the Super.

Is there some significance to the SF community with all this "chick" stuff. The chicken icons are super cute, but just wondering what those "chick" tiles mean (if it's negative or positive).
I also got an Akuma "10" t-shirt for Home earlier today. Not sure if it's related to playing a bunch of Akumas online and beating the crap out of them, or getting a perfect against an Akuma online (I did both when they gave me the shirt). So there's probably Home shirts for every character?

I don't think the "chicks" are anything special outside the fact that they're the first icons you get. I'm surprised how slowly I'm earning new icons given that the I am earning new titles so much faster. Oh well -- I have an icon of Sakura dashing which is pretty cool.

I've had a few good online matches, but finding someone with a good connection has been an utter nightmare.
I'd say a good 95% of people that come up in the search lists for me have a 3 or worse network rating. I'm yet to come across someone with a 5 rating too, over all it has been pretty disappointing finding a good solid match.
I've only seen 1v1 lobbies too.

i have the standard stick and its pretty great. the buttons are very responsive, none have gotten stuck. my joystick did briefly have some sticking problems, but its prefectly fine now. ive had it for nearly 1.5 weeks and have played 10+ hours on it and 10+ hrs on SFHDR and have zero problems, i can excecute all of blanka's moves pretty well

I have the TE stick and I've been enjoying it. Joystick is pretty smooth and I have an easier time pulling off combos with the stick than on a controller. Only problem I had was a button getting stuck, but the buttons are all perfect now, probably was from the stick still being cold.

I've had a blast with this game. I've had trouble finding games with 3+ connect bars, but once I do, its all good. My best guy is Gouken. I've been winning more regularly lately. I still always get my ass beat by Cammy and Blanka. I don't know why.

I didn't think Capcom could be as retarded as to somehow make Seth harder on Easy. I'm trying to go through the game to get all the characters wheres on Normal I was able to take Seth in about an hour but i'm now on hour three of not being able to kill this fuck on EASY. WTF?

Seth is a push over... if you put the max rounds on 1 and the time limit on 30 seconds and go for a "time out" victory.
In the 1 round matches he gradually gets more difficult, but only as his life depletes from what i can tell. Otherwise the idiot just sits and chunks sonic booms.

to send invites to ppl, go to 'create match' in either 'ranked match' or 'player match'. From there, choose your match settings and when you get to the lobby, choose 'send game invite'.

He's the cheapest boss (aside from the SNK games of course) I've seen from Capcom. That said, I want to note that 'Easy' is not the lowest setting...there's 'Very Easy' and 'Easiest' or something like that. He will still be cheap with those settings, but it's a little less cheap.
In one occassion he went from a leg/body slide (along the ground) directly into a super dragon punch...'nuff said.

It also goes to note that unlike every character in the game, Seth is not frame locked, so he can go from one move into another unlike the other characters who have to wait for their animations to finish. It's bs.

So I decide to try it on medium for the trophy. I kind of want to commit suicide right now. I got all the way up to Bison, barely squeezing out victories from the other opponents. you know the fact that you can't blind select your fighter in this game really changes an aspect of the game from SSF2THD. because now when i play people I kinda pick a good person to fight against them with. a real benefit of knowing how to defend yourself with everyone. though I rarely see myself using c. viper, rufus or dhalsim unless I am really playing around.

not really because the sheer might of their attacks on blanka even out the playing field. I use shotos a little above average and with ryu you can always cancel out your hadoken into a super hadoken and smack blanka with it every time. but anyway that move was added to compensate for how much of an advantage fireball users use to have on him.
besides if all you can really do is spam fireballs and dragon punches then you deserve to have blanka slide under and smack you.

yeah it is like that almost exactly. not as good as the SSF2 guide I remember but it does give a consistent overview of how to play a character, how you should do their moves, and move priorities and such. it even gives you frama rate times and suggestion on what to do with them.
it is not a must buy, as it does not give in depth strategies like tekken guides do, but I would say pick it up if you can find it for cheap and definately for a penny in the future.
I must say though I really do miss the arcades, even though online is a blast, it still doesn't offer the amazement of seeing the local arcade champ or the arcade jockey who has a harem of women sit behind him bored as he destroys several people in a game.

There are fun arcade stereotypes, but you're only looking at the bright side of things.. What about the annoying kids who don't understand the system of displaying your quarter on the machine to play next? or the guy that wins all of his matches because he holds his elbows out in a weird way so you can't reach your control? The guy that has B.O. so bad that you'd be willing to pay your quarter just to get away from him?
Or better yet- one of the arcades we used to go to in Memphis had ashtrays mounted to the sides of the machine. They were the only place that got Virtua Fighter 3 when it came out. We played it for a few hours one night, only to end up in the emergency room later because my brother had a severe asthma attack (his fault, i know..)
I like arcades but i don't miss the broken controllers, the jammed buttons, out of order signs, crackly speakers, or absentee arcade attendants when you have no more quarters and the continue counter is running down.

so true but yet the experience you get in arcades help shape you into a better player. I remeber growing up in philly and there were 3 different venues to really show off your fighting game skills.
1. the local pizza shop
2. Space port downtown
3. Atlantic City (with 3 seperate areas to play in, Harrah's, the mall they rebuilt, and the boardwalk arcades.) all had their own culture and each different playing styles. I know it is not philly but all of south jersey is considered to be East Philly. lol
just the different combo ideas and playing styles from each area really develop you into a better player. Plus the thrill of beating the arcade jockey with the harem of girls was the best feeling in the world. :)

Wow, how does one pull off a fake kick with Sagat?
Tap roundhouse two times in extremely quick succession. Try tapping with two fingers so that the second finger hits the button immediately after the first.

I heard some people say it's near impossible with a DS3.

If we're just talking the challenge mode thing, then it's actually easier for me to do it on the ds3.... it's just pretty hard to do if you don't have quick fingers.

Holy fuck, I just defeated Gouken in arcade on the hardest difficulty. Now my left arm's tingling...
Seriously though, all of it was crazy-adrenaline pumping.
Thanks for the advice about Sagat's fake kick, I'll try it out later.

Just bought this. Reading instruction booklet now since I can't play it yet. Will be on in like an hour though.

Holy shiatttt this game is hard. I am trying to do the challenges to learn how to play and I can't beat any characters set of challenges on Normal. On Ken I am on the 4th level and I can't beat some of these for the life of me. I think it was one where I had to do jump + HK, HK, right-down+right,down,right + MP, Focus MK+MP, and the third move is like too far away after the second move, I can't do it for the life of me.
I am using a regular controller, I know it's not totally designed for that, but I don't know if I am going to get a stick, I am at college, and frankly don't really want one, but this game seems nigh impossible to do some moves.
In general, this game seems brutally difficult! Anyone have tips??

I wouldn't worry about the character specific challenges too much. A lot of those combos rely so much on frame counting you will be hard pressed to reliable pull them off in an online environment. They do teach good concepts such as linking and such, but later on some of them require sheer perfection to complete.
I would say pick one character that interests you, go and play arcade mode for a bit on easy so you can familiarize yourself a bit with the moves (not necessarily just the special moves) and figure out what type of reach and advantages that specific character has, and then turn on accept fight requests in arcade mode, and start taking on peeps online.
If you start having certain problems fighting certain dudes, I am sure someone here will be kind enough to offer their services and put up a clinic for you. I kinda did an impromptu one with Kenpachi last night trying to figure out how to get Balrog to beat Zangief. :P
And everyone here seems to be at every level of play skill, so you should be able to get some good competitive games going soon enough.
Welcome to SF4, we won't take your fight money. :)

Ha. Is anyone playing this with a standard controller? If so is it worth it? I don't really have the money for a stick but I'm dying to play this. And if I do wind up getting a stick I'd probably want to buy the X0 version to get my friends to play it.

The major thing i don't like about the standard controller is that the R2 and L2 buttons suck.
I hate these people that are taking advantage of people like me that don't read XD They set ranked games for 1 round and 30 seconds and win via time out.

Proper way is pressing it twice quickly. The way to just do easy to finish the challenge it is set 2 buttons to do the same thing and slide your finger across quickly.

I fought my first Zangief lariat spammer tonight. Kind of a pain until I figured out to just be patient and counter with low kicks. Any other tips on stopping him? I need to find a guide that shows which moves will break each other. I play frequently, so if you want you can add me. I have only played HD Remix a little and just bought this. My PSN account is: MGS4_Ocelot_08

I think you should keep your distance and wait for his lariat animation to finish then close in with a counter. Keep him away from you with projectiles if you have a character that can do so.

Thanks. So just crouch block then throw a reversal once the animation finishes? I managed to pull that off a few times. Fireballs help too, but they will go through him if the timing is right (or off depending of your perspective).

That might just work, though you should watch out if you're right next to him cause he'll throw out a piledriver.

I'm using DS3 and I can definitely see the benefits of a stick but the only really frustrating thing is doing ultra combos with L1 and L2
Seth is a fuck
has anyone beat him? How?? I just spent an hour trying with blanka (he worked good for stopping seths teleporting by electrocuting him) and ryu (he worked good keeping distance) but no luck. Maybe I'll try it on easy next time?

 I found out that staying in one spot with Blanka and constantly using his electric thunder works wonders, he just walks into it.
When the match starts off (most of the time) he stretches out and punches you, jump and fierce kick him then crouch and trip him (don't jump at him again or he'll kock you with a Shoryuken). Get away, keep your distance and block his sonic booms. He'll eventually do a wall jump at you and that's when you attack. Get away and do it again.
Once he's close enough to you he'll rape you with Shoryukens and Piledrivers. It's not a deadset way of defeating him but it'll help in learning what works and what doesn't for you.

finally unlocked everyone and beat the game with everyone on medium or above. now it seems that outside of the beat gouken on hardest, everything will be done through challenges and online fighting. time to rape the challenges with good ole gief.
now I gotta turn my ps3 back on and check Godlyone's trophies to make sure I keep pace with him. ;)
@godlyone did you beat gouken on hardest honestly or did you use the 2nd player cheat?
I wonder can you use the second player cheat to fulfill the requirements to get gouken or do you have to do that against the cpu?
