i don't think they'll add any dlc characters unless they were free. I think Capcom has stated before that they won't introduce any dlc that will give anyone an advantage over another (using a character that the other person cannot get unless they pay for it) or something like that. They want to keep the playing field completely leveled out. Which is a shame cuz I feel the game could use some more new original characters. And some more female characters. lol

I should've put more effort into playing online matches but 10 more matches until I finally get the 100 online wins. Was just fighting some guy in a player match and it was 6-0 for me but he kept wanting to fight, gotta applaud him since I thought that he'd eventually disconnect.
Oh, and I think the least they could have done was put in a little CPU demonstration for the Move Trials just to help people get a better understanding of the certain time requirements between each move in a combo.

I can get up to the 3rd light punch using a dualshock 3 but it's tough. It would take 2 seconds with a turbo function I think. It looks easy but..

I feel like playing some Random Character Select matches with people.

I got the game on Monday and was surprised to find myself challenged between every single match as I tried to make it through story mode the first time. I won my first match (first time I played the game!) playing as Rufus against a Ryu. I lost three more matches (though won one round in each) before I finally figured out how to turn off the online play.
So yeah, it's taking some time to get used to the game but I think I'm managing. I've played through the initial sixteen characters, most on medium difficulty. El Fuerte gave me the most difficulty - even on easiest difficulty, 30 second rounds, and one round it still took me nearly an hour and a half to beat Seth.
Finally, I never really got beyond SSFII in the arcades. I've not played any iteration of SFIII. Does anyone have some thoughts/hints/ideas on cancelling moves? I'm having a difficult time making it through the character challenges.

Yeah, the fight requests would be a lot more useful if you could set it to friends only.
 at the "patch".
I'm okay with people constantly choosing Ken but it's annoying when they try some feeble attempt to play mind games at the character select screen, like just go ahead and choose your Ken so you don't waste my time with hovering over random characters before finally going to Ken at the last moment.

I just follow their cursor around to fuck with them... only when I see someone pick a non Ken quick I usually expect a decent match... or if the load time is short.

I just hover on and go back and forth between Sim and Seth when I see that.
Anyone else play Gen here? I'm trying to pick him up. He has a great cross up game but I'm having issues with finding some B&B combos and ways to get in safely.

Exactly the same thing I do. Either the person picks a character after following their cursor or they end up playing around, hover over a character and stay there for a long period of time. When this happens, I just pick my character :)

i find that players in player matches are more of a challenge and choose a wider variety of characters than in ranked matches. In ranked matches they almost always go for Ken or Ryu, but just in one session of player matches I've seen people pick Vega, Fei Long, Bison, Sagat, Cammy, Chun Li etc etc
There is less of a consequence in Player matches so naturally people experiment a bit more.

Because it does average damage and is majorly punishable on block and whiff obviously. And cause it's on fire! FIRE! TO THE EXTREME!!! TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE!!!!
I actually like the character Ken. I don't play as him though cause I find Shoto play style kinda boring. Easy to learn and effective but boring.

Yeah, scratch that thought about people starting off matches with jump to roundhouses, people always start off the match with a jump into a trip.
Woke up early in the morning and played a bunch of matches half asleep, lost to a scrubby Ryu during my first match so that's kind of disgraceful.

Anyone notice whenever someone is Akuma the MOMENT they get a super or ultra they jump back and start inputting the raging demon? Even if they're doing good they MUST do it like the game depends on the fact that they can do the raging demon? I imagine it to be something like this.

Yeah, the moment they get an Ultra/Super you see them quickly punch twice and kick while retreating. That's when you rush in and kick ass since they're so focused on trying to do the Raging Demon. Kinda pointless though since most of the time you just jump up and over them.
Probably a good thing to use if you're Akuma in a match, just fool people into jumping towards you without having to constantly throw fireballs, throw a couple of jabs and a kick then counter them when they jump in.

Not sure how I feel about SFIV , I got my ass kicked 12 times straight by chun li. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about . So I loaded her up in training mode, apparently there is a jump in target string where you mash fierce punch repeatedly and will easily buffer effortlessly to spinning bird kick .

I'm not liking the original characters much. Feels too much like Samurai Showdown and King of Fighters style character design. I would rather they put all the good guys from Final Fight in there. A Haggar outfit for Zangief is a slap in the face. JUST FUCKING GIVE ME HAGGAR! More female characters would be cool. Maybe Ibuki, Karin as a rival for Sakura, R Mika so there's a female grappler. I kinda wish they just used Street Fighter Alpha 3 for the character set. So we'd have Charlie, Rolento, etc. too, but I guess it makes sense to hold them off until Street Fighter V, or Street Fighter IV Super Turbo Dash MAX Championship Edition.

Remember that SFA3 was before SFII, then SFIV and SFIII.
Charlie is supposed to be dead since he was holding off Bison to let Guile escape. Chun-Li planted explosives on Shadaloo base and Charlie sacrificed himself.
Mike Haggar might have been running Metro City during SFA3. If they were to put him in SFIV, his moves would have been too similar to Zangief. Both of them taught each other the spinning piledriver and spinning lariat.

Its actually not HP cancel. It's Haberno Dash>Stop(LP)>HP repeat. You have to do 3 loops of it for his level 5 hard challenge.

Since when did Capcom's continuity matter though? They have so much retcon anyway. As far as spinning piledriver/lariat being redundant, that's irrelevant given the shoto moveset. I'd settle for those characters being added in with no story mode extras. Just highlighting Guile or Haggar, for example, and having a toggle button to swap between extra characters without requiring a new character select screen. Then they're in the game as bonus characters, not plot characters.

ok got 14 challenges to redo, 23 normal move trials, and still 120 hard moves to pull off:
8 time trials 5 normal and 3 hard
6 survival trials 1 normal and 5 hard
plus like 250 more wins to get that 506 title and icon.
how in the heck do you pull off vega's 4th trial the 3rd combo?
I can never get the ex wall jump to come out after the kick.
and why is gen's level 5 trial killing me on the 3rd one?

EDIT: Somehow I always got paired up with a godly Bison, Zangief or Vega. Vega I can handle, but the other two, forget about it. That's one of the reasons for my low ratio, the 38% I have are from scrubs and a few hard ass wins.

down to only 17 normal move trials left.
Chun Li 4,5 - can't get that ex spinning bird kick out for nothing
Guile 4,5 - cant' do the double flash kick after the flash kick
Balrog 4,5 - stuck on the punch into the super
Vega - 4,5 can't get ex izuna drop to connect after the roundhouse
C. Viper - 4,5 tried once and never went back
Rufus - 4,5 can't get that roundhouse to connect after the focus
Sakura - 4,5 tried once and never went back
Gen - 5 can't get the switch between styles right for the combo
Akuma 4,5 tried once an never went back
13 time and survival trials left. - really frustrated about survival normal 19. bison just destroys me without special moves.
*My win percentage is 67 percent. I need to stop trying out characters on people and stick to mastering them on hardest like I use to do.

I need some major help on this game. I am a relative Street Fighter newb. I played II every so often on my genesis, but that was really the only one I have ever played. Is there hope for me to be able to match up evenly with just about all of the guys playing online, or am I asking too much ( I am pretty much stuck at zero BP.) ? Also, I have been playing with a regular controller: would a fight pad or arcade stick make a big enough difference to justify. You can set the search details to "Same skill". That would be your best bet for playing newer people like yourself. Although what I would recommend though is to play with people here and ask them for advice to critique your game. I'm on a few hours a day. Feel free to send me a psn request and we'll definately play. I'm not awesome or anything but I can definately try to help your game out. Another resource would be to check out places like shoryuken.com forums and check out their character specific boards for tips for playing certain characters then hitting up practice mode to memorize combos and then playing games online to actually try them out.
edit: I agree that the mycheats guide is really good for newcomers.

I appreciate any tips/advice, and if a start posting on here again asking for more help, don't give me too rough of a time. Thanks.
Hey add me, (bengy81) I am kind of in the same boat as you, if you are down, we can have some spar matches, anyone else can join too if they want, I need some decent practice/constructive criticism.

Started the day yesterday with 200bp. Went beast mode with blanka 7 ranked matches in a row and was up 1021bp. (so aggrivatingly close to 10 ranked wins in a row). Today I start out with my 1021bp and lose to 3 sagats in a row and then the spammiest vega i've ever seen and an actually really good c.viper. Am now down to 500something bp :(

thats why I don't even play ranked matches anymore. After I got my ten wins during the first days of release I rarely even played ranked matches anymore. got my BP up to 1400 something and haven't played seriously since then. though you may hate me saying this...the best way to get the 10 wins ranked straight is to use ryu or ken. you may hate shotos but the general advantages they have for 10 wins straight out weight a lot of risk you take using other characters you may prefer.
tonight I am going out with a bang since I will be moving onto RE5 for a while. so if anyone wants to play hit me up. mirror matches, random matches, whatever I am down. and add me if you don't have me added already.
@godlyone have you gotten a gold yet on survival normal level 19 yet? I hate that challenge with a passion. flipping balrog and bison right after each other. (2 of the easiest computer controlled characters to fight, but with no special moves they are a real handful.)

Is it me or SFIV seems to be better of not getting disconnected with playing a match when the opponents language is other than English (even if they only have like 2 bars)? First, I was hesitant to play with some with only 2 bars and language set Chinese (I think), but after countless times of failure to connect with 4/3 bar people I just tried it and it worked.

lol yeah thats true actually about picking ken or ryu. I was thinking maybe I should just go for a "ken for 10".
On a challenge trial note has anyone had any luck with blankas last hard trial challenge? It's like
Jumping Heavy Kick -> Medium Punch -> Crouching Medium Kick -> Light Punch -> Heavy Rolling Attack
I can't get past the crouching medium kick and I only even get that far every few times.

Gah, back to 36% (played 32!!! matches with a co-worker) mostly because I am trying to learn balrog. I at least beat him every time with my cammy and sagat. I really want to learn charge characters
DarkKenpachi
03-12-2009, 06:31 PM
@minibossbattle: i will help you learn charge characters if you want. but honestly the way people play these charge characters now is how they use to play them on the other street fighters. (watch lots of youtube video and look for old school guile videos)
Ex.
Guile, Balrog, vega, bison, and blanka (and Dee Jay if he was in the game) are pressure characters and work best under these rules. (some of the few characters who really don't lend themsleves to changing fighting styles)
While Chun Li and E Honda are more reaction type fighters. though they can be played a few different ways. ie pressure, reaction, turtle
I might not be explaining this the best way but when playing against me, the ways I mentioned above are consistent ways to beat me when you use those characters.
Take lessons from Jekki. he has an amazing blanka who took it upon himself to personally take my win percentage down. lol
one more tip. like I mentioned before it is best to learn as many characters as possible..so in this case you can react to who your opponent picks, learn which characters you are better with against certain characters.

Headbutt to ultra is actually really simple once you know the trick
Hold backwards/down and then hit backwards/up punch, still holding back, then on the way down hit forward>back>forward PPP

it juggles better, hits more, and is where all the damage is.

Immediately after he'd Shoryuken and I'd block and I'd throw him on the way down... I thought I'd just kinda bait for a round and do that to see what'd happen and he just kept falling for it. I really enjoy how much people think Cammy is safe when she's not. Pretty much all her moves are super unsafe on block except her knuckle since the blow back is pretty far. Block spiral arrow and I get to throw for free. Block Cannon Spike and I pretty much get to do whatever I want for free.

Spiral arrow only LOOKS safe. It's 2 hits at close range but the animation keeps going after the hits for a while. More than enough time to throw. And Cannon Spike you just deal with like you'd deal with a Shoryuken. Block it and get em on the way down.
Other character that look safe: Bison. Scissor kick is punishable. Psycho crusher is punishable. Head stomp you just need to dash back and he'll land in front of you giving you get a free throw.

Finally finished Blankas last hard challenge and got his icon. It took me longer to get his 5th hard challenge done than it took me to get seth and goukens first 3 hard challenges combined. I'm stuck on both of their 4th hard challenges now though. :( I can get up to the EX sonic boom with seths and then the EX attack is always late. It's more annoying when you get to the 2nd to last move and mess up then not being able to do it at all.

After reading this I realized I hadn't done any of guiles trials and this is definitely frustrating but I figured the trick out.
When you do the flash kick hit:
db>uf k
And use the f to rotate right into the double flash kicks second half in one continuos motion the db charge will count for both.
The other thing I did was use turbo for HK so when I hit it for the flash kick I just held it down after so it would hit it again automatically for me after the uf, f, df, db, uf motion
so the whole motion is
charge db, uf, Hk, f, df, db, uf, Hk
all in one continuous motion
SmallWind
03-16-2009, 07:25 PM
so the whole motion is
charge db, uf, Hk, f, df, db, uf, Hk
all in one continuous motionYou can just do DB, UF + K again to get the Super(Double Flash Kick) out after you do a regular Flash Kick.

funny thing is that I can consistently get out zangiefs super and ultra. I normally only try them on wake up, blocking, or landing from a jump though. he is one of my mains though and I will admit playing this game has made it easier for me to get the super out in SSF2HD and SFA3.
I just have a funny feeling that in the end of things the only thing I will have left to complete far as task wise in this game will be the move challenges. 5 time and 4 survival challenges left to get gold in.
I will probably end up with a fightpad or something down the road just to finish up the trials.

One thing that's really dissapointing and slightly intimidating, is that the turbo isn't even fast enough for some combos.
El fuertes 3rd hard challenge there's a part where you have to hit LP 3x in a row and the turbo isn't fast enough for it. You have to tap like you were playing a van halen solo.
Same thing with blankas 5th hard challenge and one of c vipers hard challenges i forget which one. Every move in it is done with MP.
but on a lot of trials the turbo is a big help. also the turbo is awesome if you play blanka, gen, etc. ovbiously

That's great if I played Blanka. However, I play Cammy and Bison, so I have to constantly dodge through, and eventually try to corner them. Thank goodness Bison also has teleport, but the lag on that move is too long, and I have to know well ahead of time to do it safely.

@howstern gg's last night man. you got a decent blanka there. you can really tell the difference with him when you have a turbo controller at your disposal. sorry I left so early, my best friend was calling me to play RE5. lol I should be around again tomorrow night if you wanna play.

Count me in for the PS3 tournament next month. That will give me something to practice a little more for.
Also, I have been using Sagat and Blanka for a while now, and I don't think I'm bad with either one of them. I'm not incredible either, but the question I have is that I have had an incredible amount of trouble beating Ryu and Akuma (I actually don't think I have ever beaten a Ryu). Can someone recommend another character I could work on developing with that would work well against these two? Much appreciated.

Hey send me an invite on PSN ill show you how to take out akumas and ryus with blanka. He's awesome for them. The main things you want to watch out for/do:
When fighting akuma, start the match off with a rolling attack, hold back the whole time it says round 1 until right after it says "fight" then hit forward+HP. Because almost 99% of the time akumas will start off by jumping back and throwing a hadoken in the air. The backstep roll will smash them when they come back down and put you right in their face.
The next thing to do is to avoid ground hadokens hold down/forward and hit HP
tis will slide underneath the fireball and trip the opponent. Block right after you do this and watch to see if they do a shoryuken (they probably will) when they are in the air doing that start tapping punches and electrocute them when they fall. rinse and repeat.
Sometimes instead of shuryken they will simply try to sweep you. When they do that just back up a couple steps and do a backstep roll or hold crouch/back and wait for a hadoken then do another HP slide.
Sometimes when fighting ryu or ken, I will start the match off with electricity because half the itme they jump right into it going for a whirlwind kick, jump kick, or shoryuken. Another good thing to note is that blankas EX rolling attack will go through fireballs. So if you are across the screen a good way to close the gap and get a hit is to wait for them to hadoken/tiger shot and then EX roll atack through it and smash them closing the gap.

I tried using my HRAP3 with SF4 and I think I'm actually better with the controller. Not sure if it's worth it to retrain myself on a stick. This is after playing SF mainly on consoles since the SNES.
It's the complete opposite for SC/Tekken, though. When I try switching to a controller for those it's like I forgot all my moves.

Oh... just press Forward + Guard, Back + Guard or Down-Forward + Guard right before you get hit. You won't take any damage and it will leave your enemy vulnerable for a few seconds. It is so sad, I got my 500 win title a week ago. How time flies... My win percentage is quite dismal though, it is in the high 50s, but I blame that on me dicking around with Abel and Fuerte recently and my love affair with Viper when I first got the game.

Awesome,man glad to hear it!
It's funny because the one person I have a ton of trouble beating as Blanka is Blanka. I always lose my patience and go in for rolling attacks thinking "maybe they will stop blocking" and then I get blocked and countered.
I need to invest more time in some other characters. I've put all my time into blanka I'm terrible as everyone else.

The newest ranking charts are in. Obviously, there are going to be objections and this is purely unscientific but here they are. Unofficially compiled by Japanese players (http://www5.atwiki.jp/koko100/pages/160.html). Also, these charts will evolve and change as the game ages and new strategies are found. The chart works like this: If 2 evenly skilled players used a character and played each other 10 times how many times would each player win. For example, I pick Zangief and play against Sagat. I'm expected to win only 3 times and Sagat should win 7 times. This is done with all the characters and the wins are totalled and that's their score and they are then sorted. Keep in mind that THESE TIER CHARTS ONLY WORK AT HIGH LEVEL GAMEPLAY. So maybe your El Fuerte crushes your friends all the time but you might actually suck at a high level tournament. That said there is a fairly small spread between the tiers still. It's fairly tightly packed together with only 41 wins spread between top and bottom.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/kotaku/2009/03/sfchart.jpg
I find some of the rankings to be kinda odd and wonder what happened and why. Initially at launch alot of the top SRK players rated Rose as the highest tier character out of all the console characters and at this list she's bottom tier. Boxer is high up but I'm quite sure will fall pretty quickly as the tournament scene goes on since he's pretty limited once you figure out his tricks. And C. Viper I see going up since she's one of the most flexible characters around.
Which brings us to an American chart
The arithmetic is WAY off on the chart (which is ironic, for reasons that will remain unmentioned).
Some matches don't add up to 10 (Eg. Cammy vs Gouken, is 4-4 WTF?)
The sum totals for each character was completely off too.
I just fixed it by taking the top half and extrapolated the bottom half from it. Here is the outcome:
1. Sagat 153(+33)
2. Balrog 140(+20)
3. Blanka 136(+16)
4. Zangief 135(+15)
5. Ryu 134(+14)
6. Seth 131(+11)
7. Chun Li 129(+9)
8. M.Bison 127(+7)
8. Rufus 127(+7)
10. Akuma 126(+6)
10. Ken 126(+6)
12. C.Viper 122(+2)
13. E.Honda 121(+1)
14. Dhalsim 120(-)
15. Guile 119(-1)
16. Gouken 118(-2)
17. Abel 117(-3)
18. El Fuerte 114(-6)
19. Fei Long 111(-9)
20. Vega 107(-13)
21. Cammy 104(-16)
21. Gen 104(-16)
23. Rose 103(-17)
24. Dan 100(-20)
25. Sakura 76(-44)
Note: American Names
This chart was compiled by Bokchoy on the SRK boards (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=6365439&postcount=102). Despite asian stereotype, the math was all off. Not everyone plays 10 matches and sum totals are off for some characters too. He (re)did some math of his own and some characters move pretty far (See Seth, Vega, Fuerte, Sakura).
So what's everyone elses thoughts? Keep in mind tier lists are always changing, dependent on the players, and even dependent on the region where you play.

I have to say the most surprising person to see low is Sakura. She really feels quite strong with her chip abilities, her low-hitting super/ultra, the solid damage from her super, her EX hurricane kick, etc...
I was also surprised to see Fei-Long as high as he is. C.Viper kind of cheaply gets her rank because there's a specific jump-in that stuffs Guile's flash kick that gives her a 6/4 instead of the 3/7 she'd have like she does with Honda.
I think the Japanese underestimate Zangief a bit. The 2-frame start up of SPD is insanity and his risk-reward on fierces is pretty crazy. He is much better at advancing than he has ever been and is really strong in this game.
Boxer is going nowhere as he has basically been great in every game. Reach+damage= Balrog.
I similarly agree that Rose is surprising since everyone was freakin' about Shamwow's ability to hit anything ever.
I think the Americans have Rufus placed more accurately as well.

Well, just hit a milestone by reaching 1,000 BP! Certainly pales in comparison to some of the pros on this board but I'm proud non-the-less. I'm glad I gave my thumb a weeks rest, as I went 5-1 tonight -- losing to an Akuma. Thumb was getting tired again and desire for buying a stick grew stronger. Bah!
As for what's up with the SF4 Championship Mode update, from EventHubs.com (http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2009/mar/27/some-details-released-sf4-championship-mode/)
Q: Have you been thinking about any fixes for the home version characters?
A: Ah yes, the patch. In the same way we fixed things when going from the arcade version to the home version, we will be performing little tweaks to fix the odd parts.
When the title update is released, for everyone who goes online this patch will download automatically.
(Azrael's Note: The question only asks about the console characters, but the person answering doesn't specify if she's only talking about the console chars or the whole game. She also says "the same way we made changes from the arcade version"...did they make changes?)
Q: We heard that Dee Jay and T. Hawk were planned for the game but didn’t make it. We’d like to see them put in.
A: Yeah huh. They were already plenty developed…! It’d be nice if we could do something to not let that go to waste, but…!!
(Azrael's Note: That sounds like a "no".)
Q: ROUND4? Is there development for a SFIV Dash?
A: That’s just language used on the SFIV posters. Since its Street Fighter IV, we just took the 4 and put it together to say ROUND4 for when the game went on sale.
(Az's Note: This is probably just promotional language for the console sale that may have confused people.)
Q: Will there be any other costumes this spring or summer?
A: We haven’t decided yet! However, it looks like there will be some sort of announcement this summer.
Q: Any chance of seeing Shin Akuma or Evil Ryu?
A: Hmm…sorry, I can’t really say anything on the matter!
Q: Please enforce some kind of penalty for disconnects.
A: In the patch, we will be adding a disconnect ratio! But since this will include disconnects for natural reasons and not just ragequits, we’re also including a bail-out feature so that if you continue playing for awhile after a disconnect without any further disconnects, your ratio will restore itself! Yay!
(Azrael's Note: The wording isn't exactly clear, but it sounds like the disconnect ratio will go down sooner rather than later.)
Q: Although you weren’t able to go on sale with the 6-button pad when the game was released, do you have any plans to sell it in the future?
A: Now, we are working hard on it. But sorry, no plans to sell it at this time.
Q: No Mac version?
A: No plans for a Mac version at this time. I also use Mac as well as Windows, so I feel your pain!
Q: We really want new alternate costumes!
A: We understand that the alts are really popular. You’ve made your voices heard. …So for now, please cut us some slack!
Q: Sorry to say this, but the quality of the anime openings and endings just wasn’t good at all.
A: The prologues and endings are probably what we regret the most in a handful of mistakes. This is definitely something we want to work on for next time.
Q: When will the PC version go on sale?
A: We will announce the release date very soon! Sorry to keep you waiting, but please wait just a little longer!
Q: For the next time, we’re expecting new characters that make us think “Ryu and Ken are fine, but this new character is cool and seems easy to use!”
A: That makes me happy to hear…! Abel really is a strong character, so I hope more people will use him.
Q; Shiozawa…yeah yeah, but Lil’ Ono seems pretty strong.
A: How rude! Well…I can’t refute that though. Not just me, but Endo is also the best! In no time at all, with just the PS3 and 360 controller he was able to unlock all characters and all color variations!
Q: Are there any extras for the PC version?
A: Basically, it’s a port of the home version, but we will be throwing in a little extra service. More details will be coming soon!
Q: For the new home characters (Cammy, Dan, etc), we’d sure like a downloadable move list.
A: Definitely! Check the downloads page very soon!

I (purposely) played online for the first time last night. I went up against two Kens, a Zangief, and a Sakura. I took out the first Ken pretty quick and he dropped. The second Ken barely beat me the first match, then I whopped him the second match and he disconnected. The Zangief was a monster... I have a hard enough time playing against the AI, let alone someone that spams his heavier moves. He beat me four times - I kept selecting different characters hoping that he'd change as well, but never did. I stopped after the fourth loss.
The Sakura was on the ranked boards and beat the tar out of me. I've got to go back to the game for some training before I try that again.
And here I was so proud of myself actually making it through the Normal Trial Mode with Cammy using my DS3.

Totally agree with you, as I'm getting used to the DPAD after SFIV came out.
But my thumb gets tired holding charge for Balrog all the time, a problem that wouldn't happen w/ a stick. If I mained any non-charge character, this wouldn't be an issue.

the ds3 is fine for characters with circle movements but for charge characters you will greatly benefit from using a stick. besides if I had a stick I would have finished all of the normal trials and I am still stuck on 3 characters in particular. Guile, Balrog, and Vega.
so my advice is if you can afford a stick to grab one asap. you might have to relearn a lot, but the advantages in the long run are worth it.

so my advice is if you can afford a stick to grab one asap. you might have to relearn a lot, but the advantages in the long run are worth it.
(coming from a ds3 user)
I use the DS3 as well and the only real complaint I have with it is the R2 and L2 buttons. They feel different than the other buttons but you eventually get used to it. I considered buying one of the SF4 Fightpads but decided to opt out.

Haha. That sounds like me.
sounds like a lot of people actually. lol I like blanka myself but for some reason I only tend to use him once someone beats me with him and it frustrates me. lol. but that chart is real because blanka's ultra is outright silly in the damage it does. feels like it can take half of your life bar depending on who you are. still a funny chart, almost as funny as ken's. lol

the R2 and L2 buttons are a little suspect and in all honesty they hamper the use of the L1 button overall for me. good thing I really don't use that button that much.

Sadly enough I don't think there's really any other way to play Blanka. :P
I love it though. :)
I tried playing with a DS3 for an evening just for shits and giggles, and my thumb honestly felt like it was about to break off when playing charge characters. But sadly, I can pull off quarter circle motions so much more consistently with the pad. :(
Is it just me or has the competition against random peoples just gotten more brutal? I tried playing some randoms last night and I just got tore the fuck up. I don't know if it had anything to do with me just picking Sakura a whole bunch though, but it was just sad. I think all this time spent playing as Blanka has finally rotted my brain.

The game's been out for close to 2 months now, I think the ratio of "skilled to complete trash" has evened out since people have had time to find a character and practice.

I doubt it's the machine. It's the connection. All my friends have been able to play fine, but they have cable connections. I have DSL, and before that, I had WiMax, and they both weren't so great. I don't think it's a matter of speed though, I think it's more about ping. Testing connections, I sometimes get a ping of 50 ms, although, it's been a little closer to 20 ms lately, where my friends (with cable) get 3 to 5 ms.
The irritating thing about lag, is that you do something (hadouken, punch, BLOCK[!]), and it'll come out half a second later unless you get hit (in which case, you get hit and it won't come out at all).
So, I doubt the firmware update changes this. . . but here's to being hopeful?

OMG! How do you play with a ping that high!?
Well, I'm running a DSL modem to my Linksys router which the PS3 connects to wirelessly. I've tried hardwiring it to the router, but it's still lagging. I've given priority to my PS3 on my router (I think?), but even if I'm not doing ANYTHING on-line, it'll still lag. My PS3 has a static IP, with, I get NAT type 2 with UPnP available, all tests successful, the ports on my router opened (port 80 tdp, 5233 or something, etc.), and I still lag. I usually only find people with at least 4 bars, and I still lag (they don't seem to be lagging at all though). The funny thing is, I think I remember playing against 'no bar' people, and I guess they lagged, too, making it 'fair'. :/
I can play shooters just fine though (usually; sometimes it will lag, but I attribute that to PS3 hardware lag when too much is going on).
I appreciate your help btw, I just don't think there's anything I can do, except get a cable connection (or FIOS, which isn't available where I am). Thanks anyway though.

For those of you who have been climbing the online ranking ladder, do you have a rough break-down of the skill levels? I'd like to know where I fall in the skill curve at a measly 1100.

Championship Mode expansion release finally dated:
http://kotaku.com/5215857/street-fighter-iv-championship-mode-dated-brings-new-features
April 24th in Japan, so either the same day or some time soon after.
Both systems don't have the same replay system:
PS3 - replay voting system (tag certain parts of replays as Funny, Awesome, or Beautiful)
360 - ability to display inputs in replays and save the replays to the hard drive/memory card.

this means now I really have to buckle down and started playing ranked matches so I can get my BP up to get into the better tournaments. *now I get to really unleash my zangief for the world to see* ;)
Also aren't the costume packs supposed to be sold as a bundle starting next week or something? I wish they gave the option of picking 2 or three packs for a certain price.

The only console up until now that openly let people export screenshots and spam Youtube with gameplay videos doesn't get the ability to export replays to the hard drive, like it doesn't make any sense. But the majority of people probably aren't going to be using the replay system more than once anyways. I'd just label someone's ragequit as "beautiful" and go back to psycho crushin' fools.

Seriously -- what good is giving 360 owners the ability to download videos when not ever 360 has a HD to download to, while all PS3s have a hard drive?! IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!:bomb::bomb::bomb:
Personally, I'm pissed off. The PS3 is the console used for all tournaments, including the biggest tournament in America (if I'm not mistaken, EVO).
People bought more copies of the PS3 version because of the controller (likely), and thus are perhaps a more competitive bunch. So what good is having an actual worthwhile replay capability on the system that would see the least benefit?!?!!? :bomb::bomb::bomb:
The whole thing is backwards if you ask me.
BIG EDIT
Turns out there (http://kotaku.com/5215943/more-nitty+gritty-on-the-free-sfiv-championship-mode) is more to Championship Mode than we originally heard...
Here's how the tournaments work in the Championship Mode: Tourneys are divvied up into five different levels, making it possible for players of various skill levels to compete on the same footing. Like with tournament play, character selection is "double-blind", meaning you cannot see who your opponent has selected for his fighter. Player score Grade Points (GP) for wins and can use their accumulating GP total to enter higher level tournaments.
Those who win tournaments get Championship Points (CP), which Capcom compares to "prize money". So fighting against players with higher GP means a bigger CP purse. The top 5,000 CP leaders get the option to upload replays that are available for everyone to watch on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
As we previously posted, the PS3 version lets users vote in real time on things they think "Funny", "Awesome" or "Beautiful" — and vote every 30 frames (which is 2x per second). There is a cap to avoid total spamming, Capcom points out. Voting is not possible on the Xbox 360 version; however, as we posted previously, players can save their machines and see which inputs players are using.
"The new tournament system is totally addictive," Capcom's Seth Killian tells Kotaku. "Winning takes you higher and higher, but even if you get knocked out in your first match, there's always another tournament starting immediately, so you're never out of the action. With replays, if you're a junkie for great Street Fighter matches like I am, you basically just got the best cable channel in the world for free."
The Championship Mode hits April 24, free of charge.
I am disappointed that PS3 users won't be able to download their own replays, but at least we'll have access to the top tier matches for review. It's a half-loss, at best and totally stupid at worst.

I'm inclined to agree that charging for things like costumes is totally asenine, but someone has to play for the cost associated with servers -- and I believe that it's Capcom.
Once you pay for the game, that's pretty much it for what you give to Capcom yet they continue to spend money so you can enjoy their online services. Should the cost of such maintenance be included in the original price tag? Perhaps, but there would be a big PR fiasco trying to explain why it's more than most other games.
This doesn't just apply to SFIV, but to all games with large online communities. Paying for licensed DLC certainly is understandable, but I believe that "bonus" features such as additional costumes (that neither limit or expand upon the experience) are company's attempt to recoup the incredible cost associated of developing games for this generation of highly-advanced platforms.
