View Full Version : The Thrift Store Thread 2009

Please let me explain this thread before you post. We have two threads for thrift stores (Tales from the Thrift and that SA/Goodwill thread). Why don't we just have on thread that we make every year? I can't even find the two theads I mentioned, so they must be dead anyway. If this isn't okay then just lock it.
Also, if anyone has the links to the two old threads, I'd like to put them in this post for reference. Thanks, and good luck this year!

I always thought it was silly to have a Goodwill/SA thread and a Thrift thread.
Anyways, the old GW/SA thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167241) and the old Thrift thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139799).

Thanks for the links.
And yeah, no point in two of the same threads.

I'll get this thread started in meager style then. Hit up 3 Goodwill stores that have been pretty dependable for consoles over the past month. I've seen a Gamecube, PS1, N64x2, Genesis 2, and SNES in them all for very reasonable prices.
One had a new batch of NES games priced for $2.99 each. Ended up getting Metal Gear and Ninja Gaiden for my collection. Nothing groundbreaking, but a couple of classic games that I hadn't stumbled across yet, so I was happy.

Feels good to get a little NES collection going again. Finally have some good games to put in my toploader.

Saw Playstation 1 and four controllers at my local Good Will. $20.00. The system made a rattling noise, no thanks.
Picked up the following:
Dart Board - $10.00 (No darts to try it out)
Would You Rather...? - $5.00 (I read through the game cards, what a waste of money)
Harry Potter Trivia Game - $2.50 (Good for little kids)

You are lucky because my local Goodwill is selling a Dreamcast (just the console) for 50 bucks.
Anyways I picked up for 1.99 each

Nice. I was at my local Salvation Army a few weeks back and got RBI Baseball 2 and Operation Wolf for .75 each. They had California games, but I only had $2 on me and the next day it was gone. Oh, and then a week or so later I got Tony Hawk 4 for the X-Box for $1.50. Finally, like a week after that, I got Mario Kart 64 for $1.75.
I'm still bummed since a year or two ago they had the tiny third edition Genesis for $15 with all the cords, cables and Sonic. Sadly, I had a $5 on me, but I got Battletoads for $1.99. I got a $20 from my sister that night and went back the next day, but it was gone. Since then, though, I got another second edition Genesis for $5 with 6 games (including Sonic 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles), all the cords but either RF/AV jack (luckily, I have both and gave it to my bro with the RF) and two controllers.
I need to hit up some Goodwills, but none are in walking distance. Last time I got to one was like September. I picked up Diablo II and the expansion for .49 each. They were in the paper disc holders but the codes are on them.

Game Gear System (sans AC adapter and missing one battery cover) w/Sonic the Hedgehog cart: $9.99
Never seen one in the wild before, so I wasn't going to pass on it. I already needed to pick up an AC adapter for the Genesis 2 I picked up recently, so that doesn't really cause too much of a problem either.

yesterday at a goodwill i found shining force 1 and 2 for the genesis and i wasn't sure if they were rare so i didn't pick them up. they were both in their boxes, although they both had '3-' written on them in permanent marker as the price, so that stinks. i'm debating on if i should go back and get them for 3 bucks a piece.

Yes. Shining Force 1 + 2 are worth $30+ a piece if they are complete in box, even with marker on the cover. $3.00 is a steal for those games.

That reminds me of when I found a complete copy of Shining Force at a Goodwill last April. I walked into the store and spotted some Genesis games in the glass case. Unfortunately, they had been priced at $6.99 each (which is odd, most of the local Goodwills tend to price Genesis games between $1.99-$3.99), and Shining Force was the only one that was worth the price.
They also had a few NES games at a far more reasonable price - $1.99 each. I left the store with SF and the only NES game in the store that I didn't have, a boxed copy of Solstice.
Later on, when the color tag on the Genesis games became the half-off tag of the week, I went back to that Goodwill to see what was still there and worth $3.50. I left with Boogerman and Socket, both copies only missing their manuals.

I just got back from the local Goodwill in the neighboring town with my great aunt. I was just about to leave when I found Escape from Butcher Bay for the X-Box for $2.97 (original, non-platinum). I remembered reading from the X-Box forum here that it was a good game, so I grabbed it since it looked in good shape.
Now I'm not sure if I wanna play through it or wait to watch the movies.
I passed on the other video games, PS and PC's. I looked over the CSI game for the PC for my sister, but it was $4 and she only watches New York to my knowledge. Plus, I doubt it'll sell quickly as it's in the display case. And, there's always the chance it's going dirt cheap on amazon with the $3.99 shipping. Only other one I recognized was Knockout Kings for the PS, which is going for a whopping penny on amazon.

Gosh, I saw overpriced games at my local Goodwill today. Rock Band Track Pack Vol. 2 (PS2) was $20. Still sealed mind you, but a Target clearance retread that didn't sell at $7.48 at Target. And Super Paper Mario was $30 used. That's more akin to GS pricing.
Very disappointed in this particular Goodwill.

Today a HUGE Savers had its grand opening in my area. Seriously, it's gigantic. Savers stores around here usually don't have many games, but I love buying movies there. They must have had hundreds of VHS tapes there. HUNDREDS. Unfortunately, each movie was $2.99, but it could be worse. Since it was a good selection I picked up three kids movies for that price. I'll be checking back there regulary, epecially when they have sales.

Picked up:
Myst (PC) - $1.99
2 camping chairs - $10.00
Acoustic guitar - $48.00
I love my local Good Will, they have these random pop-up sales. Went there today for the guitar, they had 40% off colored tags and 25% off white tags. A couple of days ago, it was 50% off movies and 50% off toys/games (still on going). Unfortunately they do not have many games.
There are two used Playstation 1 systems for 14.99 (50% off right now so 7.50ish). There are no power cords so not worth the buy for me.
Cheers ^__^

Since I moved to a larger city this past month, I've only hit up one Goodwill.....it sucked.
But before I came, I found a great copy of Soul Caliber (DC). Not really amazing, but worth a little more than $2.99. And sadly, was only able to find every disc for Myst (pc) except for one :( I must have went through hundreds of cd cases that day.
And although it didn't come from a thrift store, I picked up a copy of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy II for $4 each at a local pawn shop.....maybe close enough.

This is the first time I visited my local goodwill, and I came up with something that might be decent, but I'm not sure. Mint, complete copy of Panzer Dragoon for Saturn. I know it isn't the really rare one, but they run for 20 to 30 on amazon. They also had a stack of other saturn games. The other two that caught my eye were Dragon Force and Burning Rangers. I may go back tomorrow and pick those two up.

Um, why did you leave the two games that are worth $70.00 + and buy the one that's worth $15? Get back to that store immediately and buy the other two, those are common knowledge rare games so they are likely not there anymore.
Even the thiefs at the goodwill near me know when a game is rare (hence the empty "Legend of Mana" case I found there).

ouch. that's a pretty big flop!
but I flopped yesterday to. Best Buy had DMC4 Collector's Edition for the 360 for $14.99 on clearance. I picked it up and the cellophane was scratched, so I decided not to get it. Then I saw 5 more at another BB (full price though.) I had the bright idea to price match from the receipt at the one store to snag them or at least exchange for a mint copy.
Of course, the game was gone when I went back.

I went to a Goodwill a good bit away yesterday that usually has a good gamin selection. Sadly, it was pretty much all outdated PC games and a worthless PS game.
However, I did find Sims 2: Apartment Life for $6.99. Not the greatest deal, but better than amazon. At least the disc works, unlike the copy of Sims 2 Deuxe I got there a while back for $5.99 that wouldn't play (it had the code, though, which is all I technically needed to get it running.)

That just made my day. How can they screw up that bad? Three generations of hardware/software in one package. Did they even try to plug the controllers in, because last I checked the ports on the 64 were rounded and the SNES controllers had really long rectangular plugs. Wow, that's awesome.

I almost had an incredible find today. I walk into the Goodwill today and spy a CD holder next to some old PS1 games. The holder was marked $6.00. When I go to open it I see an FFVII disc (disc 2) staring back at me. Looking further through the holder I see disc 3 of FFVII, but no disc 1. I was contemplating buying it even without disc 1, but upon examination of the discs, they were literally scratched up to hell. So, I had to place it down and slowly walk away, sadly...

I hit up the Salvation Army again for the second time this week, nothing again... I really need yard sales to start.
After leaving, I stopped at the local Farmer's Market, which has a few flea market type tables in the back. There sat two Genesis games in cases in absolute awful condition. I picked up Madden '96 first, which was covered in dirt/mold. It had no price on it and I already have a good copy. I set it back and picked up Olympic Gold Barcelona '92. The case was a little better than Madden, but still pretty haggard. There was no manual but the game looked good and it was only 50 cents, so I snagged it with some pocket change.

I checked the one Salvation Army that I went to the last time I was up in NY state around Waverly today and I found that apparently old and crappy PS1 titles are a hot item to shoplift since I found the cases/manuals and artwork for many shittastic games but NONE of the discs were in their cases.
This is the same SA store that I found 2-3 of the Phantasy Star games for the Genesis at the last time I was up that way, but I didn't buy them because the carts were REALLY beat up. One was missing a huge chunk of it's label, another one of them had a major problem with the card in the cart itself. It sounded like it was going to snap off at any second.
If not for those problems, I would've easily bought them.

Wow that's a good find jlew.
My best thrift store find ever was non-gaming related. A Goodwill store sold me a La Pavoni Professional PRH Lever Coffee machine for $15. I plugged it in before buying it and the basin got hot so I assumed it was fine. When I got it home and inspected it, I think it had made coffee maybe twice tops. Everything was like new, just dusty. I cleaned it up, boiled water in it to clean it, and sold it on Ebay for $736 + shipping. They go over $1,000 new since they are imported from Italy.

Hehe, I paid a whopping $3 for it. I'm still stunned that I found it. Now I'm wondering if I should sell or keep and let it age like a fine wine :) I think I'm going to record myself playing adam & eve on it and submit some high scores to twin galaxies first. Is it really true that the people who work at the salvation army thrift stores take all the good stuff/items with value (including video games), for themselves instead of putting it on the floor?
Anyone here ever worked in an SA thrift store and see this happen? Just curious.
Seems unfair to an extent......
One situation I theorize is that they take all the non-sports video games and keep them and only put the sports titles out. Some of you might have seen only sports games there. No other types of games (not even commons).
Just something that's been boggling my mind lately........

Yep, it's quite well known that Goodwill, Salvation Army and other thrift store employees/drivers cherry pick the good stuff for themselves/their families/their friends.
Just chalk it up to being the fringe benefit of having to work for one of them - you know, getting paid minimal (if not the minimum) wage, having to sort peoples' thrown out trash, etc.

what about the dreaded back room we've probably all come across at least once at an SA. The door with a big sign that says "customers not allowed, only employees". Is that where all the good stuff is?
I always peek in and see toys and bins of items.

I can definitely see that as a possibility. There are two goodwills close to me... one is always good for scoring games(I just today scored a bunch of snes games: mario kart, yoshii's island/cookie, DKC etc. for $3 a piece), and the other is basically barren of games. I always figured they put their games on that auction site, but there is this one guy always posting games for sale on craigslist who lives not even a mile from that goodwill. I've bought stuff from him a couple of times, and while he could just hoard all the games from there since he lives so close I'm more inclined to believe he's an employee that cherry picks the goodies. For one, basically ALL of the games he sold had GW stickers, and just talking with him gave me the impression that he really did not know much about gaming. He's sold many copies of the same games too so it's hard to believe he's just some guy getting rid of the junk from his basement.
Anyways, it probably should bother me, but I dunno I just don't really care. The other GW still has good deals, plus I kinda feel like the employees deserve that incentive if they're inclined to act on it. Just like any good deal you gotta work to earn it, it's not much different from the lengths us CAGs go to get the jump on a deal if you ask me.
It is well known that goodwill sell all their good stuff on their website

Just depends on the people.
the SA near me could care less about anything that comes in.
The goodwill on the other hand has ebay power sellers working there, so they take whatever they know will sell for good on ebay.

Both my sister and her fiance used to work at the same Goodwill- her on register, him on donations. And yes, they did indeed weed out 'the good stuff'. He picked up the donation items (like a sealed GH Legend of Zelda for NES, another guy found and claimed the sealed Tetris first). For the pre-priced items coming from the central wherehouse that went straight out to the sales floor- My sister always called when new games went in the case, just in case something I wanted turned up so she could set it aside.
Is it unfair to the shoppers? Yes. You know what else is unfair?
-Trying to keep the toy aisles not a health hazard becuase half your customers pretend not to speak English when you ask them to not drop their kids off over there like it's a daycare.
-Having customers take down your 'lane closed' sign when you're trying to go on break/lunch/home becuase your line's shorter... then ingoring you when you try to tell them you're not open anymore.
-Mopping up human urine and feces from the dressing room becuase someone didn't want to bother finding a real bathroom (or was just being a dick.)
-Having a manager steal money from the tills while you're at lunch so they can try and frame you for it.
I will never, ever blame any thrift store employee for taking a few 'fringe' benefits. If it bothers you that much, go make friends with the donations guys. It never hurts to have 'connections'.

Salvation army also sends certain goods to certain stores right? My store NEVER has ANY toys or games, I mean never. There is no way they can be devoid of any toy donations. They might have 3-4 old board games and some old car seats, that's about it. They are packed with overpriced clothing but the regular electronics, where I never find games is actually cheap. Seems they like to overcharge people on clothing but when it comes to electronics its cheap (8.99 for a working color TV set). Most people want 50$ and over for any color TV at a yard sale, it seems people still think that CRT TV's are worth something...
I buy a lot of games at yard sales in my area so I know there are games in this area. People have boxes and boxes of toys they don't want in their houses, and I know they are donating them, so again, why they never make it to the SA is beyond me.
Did anyone ever try and voluenteer for the SA? If you really want to get some good stuff you might want to try it, although I am not sure if they are allowed to sell to voluenteers. Regardless it would give you a heads up on the operations at your local thrift.
Donate your good things to freecycle people and let someone else have use of them for free, we all know that all the truly good donations go home with the company CEO or head of whatever, or the store manager.

I don't think it's necessarily limited to thrift stores. One of my local pawns used to have awesome prices and some real gems until they hired a hardcore gamer/collector on the staff. He wasn't shy in telling me about how he would set aside all the good stuff for himself, and the things that he didn't want he said he was going to make sure they didn't sell below prices comparitve to ebay/gamestop. In a sense I can't blame him, it does get frusterating though.

Personally, as others have said, I don't blame the employees for wanting the better gaming related stuff for themselves, since the job only pays minimum wage($7.15 an hour here). Mind you, I still find SOME gaming stuff at my local SA stores, but it's rare since a fellow CAG is always hitting them up and cleaning them out of anything good.
On the rare occasions when I've found something I might actually want, it turns out that the case/manual are there but the disc is LOOOONG gone(Spyro: Year Of The Dragon @ my closest SA store).
I'm content to just check out the local game shops and hope the owners price stuff a little too low, so I can get something of a deal. Speaking of which, the one local shop had their PS1 games 3/$5 recently and I need to get back there to grab both Fear Effect games.

Only time I ever have was with a DS game I saw at good will. I opened it up to check if there was a game inside, saw the game, closed the case, and upon later inspection noticed it was a different game then the box went to. Wasn't to big of a deal, both were worth about the same amount.

the old manager here used to take most games home, and then mark the ones left to higher than Ebay prices...when I would ask if she would discount them she would say "that would cost you twice that at walmart" ya, walmart sells genny games and N64 controllers now? now the store has jehovas witnesses working there and has gone even further downhill, they just pile items around the store and "witness" to people that come in..they have never approached me I must look to scary lol.. I cant wait till they do, i'll jsut witness to them about my church and how they follow a con-man from the 1800's.

OT but we actually had a bunch of Jehova's around town during easter here, odd as I haven't seen them in YEARS over here, at least they are easier to get rid of than those energy company scammers.
Definitely frustrating on our end, but like mentioned: think about their job and how much it sucks beyond normal retail due to the clientele that those stores attract. There's nothing greater than finding that gem of a game but quite frankly I'd rather have the job I have now than work there for that kind of 'fringe benefit'.
I'm pretty sure the employees cherry pick at BB too because since the in-store pick up guarantee went away before this last holiday season I haven't been able to complete an in-store order for shit when there is a hot item/sale going on. I know that the availability goes away when the stock is down to 3 or something close, so when it's available and employees see orders coming in for the cheap price, I know they set them aside and don't fulfill it.

LOL I worked at Woodstock back in 1994 and the workers' camp had porto-crappers filled to overflowing and some woman decided it'd be funny to put her tampon atop one of the piles like a flag.:roll:

I don't think I'll have to worry about employees cherry picking games at my thrift store. Unless there's some great electronics, they won't grab them. My thrift store is run almost entirely by women. Nice, but I got you beat. I went to a Kmart that was kind of out of the way of civilization because I knew they had No More Heroes for $15. Their dingy electronics section still had that old GC/PS2/Xbox demo station (I played Dark Cloud for a bit). When I was sifting through their clearance games, I saw a copy of 2Xtreme for 15 cents. That's the recently donated stuff that has to be sorted/inspected/priced before hitting the floor. They have to check that's it, wasn't put on a recall at some point, figure out how much it's going to be, and make sure they can even sell it- a lot of people treat thift stores like dumpsters and 'donate' soiled clothes or completely broken thingsso they don't have to deal with 'em. Or sometimes they just don't think about what they're allowed to sell- I'm sure the fellow who dropped the box of ammo and porn at my sister's old store had the best of intentions- but unfortunately, the local good will couldn't sell those kinds of things.

Picked up a few nice things today. I was almost resigned to walk out of the store, because all they had out were the usual assortment of Genesis sports titles, when an employee brought out a cart of stuff to put out. This girl (sooo freaking cute. Tattoos, punk style, my type of girl :D) started unloading the cart, and I spotted some Genesis games in there. I asked if I could get first crack at the cart, and she smiled (<3) and said I could.
I got:
:pc: The Sims 2 DVD edition CIB - $1.99
Gen Streets of Rage CIB - $.99
Gen Sword of Vermilion CIB - $.99
Gen Alien Storm CIB - $.99
Those were the final prices. They were all marked twice that, but, unknown to me, it was half-off day. I almost left The Sims 2 because the box is crushed and taped up, but for $1.99, I'm not gonna pass it up.
So I got a bunch of cheap games and a new love interest. Today was a good day.

Same problem for me the last couple years. Especially at Goodwills, all the stuff is either put on shopgoodwill.com, bought before it hits the floor, or put at ebay prices. Same thing with the pawn shops, the one closest to me actually has higher prices on games than the GameStop across the street :hot:

Went to a flea market and 2 Goodwills today. Only game stuff I saw at the flea market where some Genesis sports games-passed. First GW still had the $40 black Dreamcast, 2 controller, memory card, and UFC game bundle from last week, some more Genesis sports games, and 2 copies of Mario/Duck Hunt. Games were $4 apiece-passed. 2nd GW was one I never been to, they had a $10 Genesis with nothing, a Quickshot controller for NES, and a $15 PS1 in the electronics aisle-passed. Walked over to the videos and cds and see 3 NES games marked $4 so I grab them since other people were around and I look around and find 4 more and theyre marked $1 each. They also had Sonic 1 and 3 CIB, some CIB Intellivision game, CIB NBA Jam for Gamegear, and 2 CIB Saturn sports games-passed. 25% off games today so for $12.85 I got Journey to Silius, Rampage, Tiger Heli, Days of Thunder, Sky Shark, Break Thru, and Rad Racer for NES. Nothing too great but didnt have any in my collection and for about $1.84 apiece I couldnt pass.

My friend picked up a Captain America game for Genesis at the same thrift store where I make most of my gaming finds. It's was CIB, and even included a pin that was advertised on the box, still in it's plastic bag. Whoever donated this game kept it pristine. Makes me wonder why they were donated in the first place.

Today was a half price sale at the SA so I went there to see if I could find anything. The prices were much lower than before, but some high priced items mixed in. I guess they realized they would not sell any clothes at 5$ for a worn out t-shirt, t-shirts were 99 cents. I got a genesis game (Wayne's World) for 40 cents (marked 79 cents). The game is complete and after cleaning the contacts doesn't look like it was ever played.
The funny thing about it was the woman at the counter opened it up and she was like, what the **** is this, a camera? Then I am like an old video game. It was mixed in with the books and VCR tapes.

I stopped by the local Salvation Army. They're currently operating out of the parking lot after their building burnt. Their inventory seems to change fairly often now and prices are lower for the most part.
I picked up Yoshi's Cookie for the NES and Ren & Stimpy: Veediot for the SNES for $1 total. Ren & Stimpy looks in great condition outside of a contact cleaning. Yoshi's Cookie has the tab of the label loose, but for .50 I couldn't pass and I'm sure with a dab of rubber cement I can get it to stick back down again.
They also still had Star Wars Battlefront II and Sky High (UMD) for the PSP for $6 each. Oh, and two different PS/PS2 racing wheels. I considered getting one for my dad, and my sister is interested in getting a PS2 soon (and has a PS) so I guess she plans on looking at them and possibly picking them up tomorrow. They were $2 and $3. One was Nyko, one was Nascar.

I went to the salvation today, they had some PS1 games mixed in the with music cd's, including Frogger, Crash Bash, and Crash team racing greatest hits, all were marked $5 so I passed.
They had the usual old vcr's and speakers that look like they came from a garbage bin, other then that, it looks like they are gonna be doing a huge re-stock soon because of how empty the place is.

Great Goodwill day- $15 for a basically brand new Wiimote, the top of the plastic packaging had been cut off but inside the box was a flawless controller with the rubber cover. $2 for a Gameshark 3.3 for N64, its the one with the parallel port on the back. $3 for the Bongo controller for Wii or Gamecube. My friend got a Bongo dirt cheap a while back. Apparently they threw it in with the kid's stuff rather than electronics/gaming stuff and marked it really low. He got me into checking out the toys after he snagged a He-Man set still in the box for like $2 or $3 and resold it for $100+.

GameStop probably just doesn't want to sit on them since they would take up too much space in a store that is already crowded from all of the junk games that get traded in. Since the bongos are so common they would probably pile up rather quickly at GameStop if they sold them for say $5-10 used.

$4.99 for an NES game? Ouch. The Goodwills around here are fairly standard on NES games... $1.97 cart only, $2.97 if it has the box.
Then again, they also have a weird habit of leaving Dreamcast games in with CDs and selling them for CD prices. I got my friend Resident Evil: Code Veronica for around $1 a few years back. A friend of ours borrowed his copy, never returned it and noone could find him after HS.
The DC might not be weird, but they'll still stuff most of the PS and all Windows 98-ME games that aren't kiddy in their display cases for like $5-$7... and usually leave XBox games with DVDs.

The double standard exists at my thrift stores as well. The one with the $4.99 NES game at one point had a ton of stuff marked $4.99, mostly N64 games. I bought Metroid Prime 2, LoZ: Majora's Mask, and Ghosts n' Goblins at that price, and they were all well worth it. However, a few weeks later they put out CIB Genesis games at 1.99 with the VHS tapes. They've got PS1 games in with the CDs, but they're crappy games like Jeremy McGrath Supercross 98, and they've got new in the box PC versions of board games like Clue and Life for $10 in the display case.
The other thrift store has the same problem. They keep some N64 games in the case for $5-10, but I found Star Wars Episode 1: Battle for Naboo in the electronics section for something like $3. Thrift stores are complete luck of the draw already, but arbitrary pricing makes it even more of an adventure.

Sega Genesis Model 2 with RF adapter- $7.50 after 25% off
6 Button Arcade Stick- $3.00 after 25% off
NES Games- Crystalis, Dragon Warrior, Dragon Spirit, Tengen Gaunlet, 8 Eyes- $20
Genesis Games- NHL94- $4 PitFighter-$2
Used my PSP ac adapter to turn on the Genesis and I think the rf adapter is broke or it was getting too much power cause the screen was black and white and looped on my tv. $4 a game really adds up fast but I didnt have any of the NES games in my collection. For some reason the chick was like "this one will be $4 because most of our other games are $4" after I pointed out that PitFighter had $2 written on it. I thought that was kinda lame but whatever NHL94 is seriously my most played game of all time.

I feel bad for you guys having to drop $4-$5 on NES games. Maybe better games will stay in stock a little longer, but still. $3 is my cutoff price and I don't even like spending that on games w/o cases or manuals unless they're something I really want like River City Ransom.
Oh, and I hit up the Salvation Army 50% off sale today. I actually just went down to get a PS Racing wheel they've had for $2 for the past week or two, but of course, it was gone. Anyway, I found three NES games marked .50, so they were a quarter each...
Tetris
Little Mermaid
and... Sesame Street Countdown
I used to play Countdown as a kid somewhere... it might've been at a friend's or it might've been on an old Tandy or something. I really wanted the game, just because the voice sounds were insanely great for an NES game.
Then, I picked up an old school car snow shovel as it looked relatively new and marked $2, so it was only $1. Plus, it was worth the $1 just to walk home with people staring at me as I carried a snow shovel home in the middle of July.

See, that's not uncommon for video stores around here, but not thrift stores. The one local video store I stop by very, very infrequently (namely because they seldom have games for sale) tries to pawn off XBox and PS2 games for $20. Granted, they are new, but the titles suck. They also did a GBA sale for $6.99. I sorted through the stack and grabbed the one good title and bounced (Final Fantasy I & II)
NES, SNES and Genesis games are like $3 tops. GB games are nearly impossible to find around here. I've found more systems than games themselves.

i think they do that so the cashier sees it right away when they're examining it. in my experience that type of price tag comes off quite easily as the adhesive is more "tacky" and tends to lift away better than other tags. especially on Vindicators: Tengen was kind enough to put a fairly thick laminate layer over their labels which can actually take a lot of wear and tear, unlike most licensed cart labels.
i hate when they put the price tag on the rear label, especially on N64 carts, where there is no laminate or glossy surface whatsoever. fortunately, the worst ones can be salvaged with a quick swap for a less valuable game that has an identical rear label.

07-16-2009, 07:05 PM
The price tags were a little annoying to remove but they didn't do any damage to the cart art. As for the price tag placement I would have to agree with the switching price tags.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that I wish a lot more of the thrift stores would tape the cd cases closed like Goodwill. At the thrift store I found the NES carts they had Seaman and a Japanese Resident Evil Code Veronica X both on Dreamcast that were missing the game discs. Two games I would have liked to have in my Dreamcast library.

Actually its 90125. I have no less than two copies of it on vinyl myself. My first copy skips real bad during "Leave It." Oddly enough it plays perfectly otherwise so I suspect the previous owner(s) had a thing for that song.
I wish both my SA and Goodwill I frequent were better at stocking their vinyl records. At SA they just dump them into a wooden bin that is crammed full to the point of where its impossible to look at them without making a complete mess. Then the one old guy who's always around gives you dirty looks when you look at them so I don't bother. At Goodwill they have them stack on a metal type shelf which isn't too bad but again they are so crammed that its hard to browse through them. Not to mention anything good I have found tends to be scratched real bad. Which made me almost scream one time when I found Beatles "Sgt. Peppers" buried in a pile... that was a UK Mono pressing.

Found myself by a goodwill that I've only been to once before, so I decided to check it out. Had a decent little haul:
-Monkey Island Madness - $3
-Goldeneye 007 - $2
-Gameshark N64 - $2
-Gameshark GBA(complete) - $4.50
That's well and good, but the other thing I saw there is out of this world. I scoured the store for a while, left to check some other stores, and then came back around 20 minutes later and found monkey island. On my second trip to the checkout, I noticed the guy in front of me had in his possesion a friggin' xbox 360 pro system, complete with controllers, cables etc. The price scribbled in crayon on the side of the box? $10. Was it broken? I dunno, but that's nuts either way. The guy seemed pretty familiar with the lady at the register, I didn't see him or the system on my first go around so maybe it was a backroom employee hookup. Regardless, that's just crazy.

@chimpster1313: I got Criterion lazerdisc Chasing Amy at goodwill for $.50. It was in with the records and priced as such. I wish I know what I did with it.
My SA has a stack of Laserdiscs right now. All of which are very common titles marked at $4.95 each except for the multi disc Jurrasic Park which oddly is $8.95 - which mind you is only multidisc because they spread the movie out for better picture quality. Oddly they sell DVDs for $2.95.... something with this picture doesn't seem right to me.

$10. I think the local SA stores do that, since I've RARELY found ANYTHING good.
Dropped by some thrifts this weekend. Nabbed for $2.92 each:
FF VII (GH)
FF VIII (GH)
:gc: DDR Mario Mix (game only)
And non game related, I grabbed a copy of Doyle Brunson's Super System for 50 cents.

One of the 13s was pretty beat but I'm going to restore the shoe conditions. The other one is pretty much brand new, too bad it wasn't my size so I gave it to my GF.
The Kobe was Nike 2k4, just going to be used for outdoors

Didn't realize this was really a noteworthy pick-up until I looked it up on ebay, haha. I originally just bought this because I hadn't seen it in a long time and I remembered Skullymonkeys for the PS1 (which I also recently acquired), so I just decided to grab it. For $3 I got:

Went to the thrift store a few days ago, and I'm pretty convinced that it's dried up. They had the same Genesis sports titles they've had for a year, along with Genesis Ms. Pac-Man, an NES adventure game, and assorted PS1 sports games, all for $4.99. No one, certainly not me, is going to buy them for these prices. I'll still keep checking there, just in case, but I'm pretty sure it's dead.

I just picked up 2 boxes of these Magic Erasers which are pretty good at getting off sharpie or sticky stuff that I find on alot of the games I get from there, those were $1.03 apiece. My sister and cousin were with me, they said they didnt find anything so we get to the car and my sister says "I got this for you" and she hands me a Gamegear with Sonic The Hedgehog in it. Of course being a CAG I didnt care that she took it and was like "WOW arent you the sneaky theif". Its got both the battery covers and the contrast and screen are still pretty good. The audio is about done Ill need to get a new capacitor to fix it. Found the $8 writen on it probably wouldve paid that but OH WELL. okay, but that doesn't change the fact that you're in possession of something you know is stolen. it doesn't matter that Goodwill paid for it; once they receive it, legally they assume ownership. and unlike a lot of stores, Goodwill is in the business of employing people who might not otherwise be able to work, so you're really stealing from those who would benefit the most.
you're not even apologetic. way to go.

Definitely not a CheapAssGamer, but instead just an Ass. You owe Goodwill $8 for actually contibuting to theft. You owe it to your sister to explain to her why what she did is wrong.
And you should stop calling yourself a CAG. You bring down the community of gamers by your pisspoor judgment; you should do us all a favor and not publicize your lack of moral compass.

Lets get this thread back on track.
As I've said, I'm pretty sure that the nearest thrift store is dead, but the one two towns over isn't. Their prices are pretty terrible, though, so I try to go when they have %50 off sales. Luckily, they seem to have one every other week.
They keep their games behind the counter, so it wards off theft, but it also wards off sales. They never seem to sell any of their games, save for a few CIB Atari games. They were nothing special, though, and they wanted $7 for them. Anyway, the problem with them keeping the games back there is I always need to ask to see them. It's just a pain in the ass for me and the employee, but it can't be helped.
They had the usual metric ton of sports games. The only games I found that were worth picking up were NES Maniac Mansion and GB Nemesis. I passed on Maniac Mansion, as I already have a copy, but I picked up Nemesis, because I thought it looked like Gradius. Turns out I was right. It's actually a Gradius game! It was marked $5, but it was $2.50 on sale, so I snatched it up all quick-like.
Unfortunately, that was my only game pick up there. I got a few other things, though
:gba: Nemesis - $2.50
:dvd: Beastie Boys - Awesome: I Fuckin' Shot That! - $1
CD: Sonic Youth - Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star - $.50
Cassette: Elvis Costello - Trust - $.25
The cassette is for my car. I search for cool cassettes everytime I go into Goodwill, and I always come out with something. Last few trips I got albums by The Who, Rush, XTC, Prince, and a ton more.

Went to Goodwill and almost crapped my pants (good place to be, though, on account of the cheap pants). They had complete copies of Res Evil 2 and Perfect Dark N64 for $3.99 each, but someone stole the carts from the boxes.
TONS of solid Genesis games (Mortal Kombat 1-3, NBA Jam and Jam TE, Kid Chameleon, Quackshot) all complete for $4.99 each.

That's one thing that really pisses me off about Goodwill, they leave the cases out unsealed for anyone to swipe what's inside. Even one of the games in the glass case when I bought Evolution & SC was missing the game disc.
