I bought this today, Im not sure if I should open it. The only MMO I've ever got into was Phantasy Star Online. I'm a huge comics fan though so it intrigues me.

the ONLY MMo that ever interested me was phantasy online/universe (dreamcast/360)
I must say, this game has the combat of phantasy star, but better, as well as everything else you'd want in a PSO/PSU-esque MMO
you don't have to worry about synth'n items, leveling a bot, or level photon arts for that matter. Theres no guardians colony but just a world. there are instances but you are automatically transported there. oh yea.....PvP!!

DC Universe Onlne for the PC is doing well on its debut. But so far for the PS3 version, it's sales is not fairing so well in the US, Japan, and Europe in general.
The PS3 version did not even crack the Top 10 in sales for the week it was debuted on; DCUO was actually ranked #46:
http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2011/01/16/games-weather-report-of-week-2-2011.htm
However, the PS3 version is doing much better in the UK, sneaking in barely at the #10 spot.
http://www.gamingunion.net/news/dc-universe-online-slips-into-uk-top-10-charts--3680.html
Although it sounds good, it's really not that great considering older games that are 3-4 months old are still outselling it in it's debut, and it just beat out The Sims 3 for the 10th spot.
At the rate this is going, and the fact that Sony spent $50 million to make this game, either the retail price of the PS3 version will go down quicker, or the monthly fees will get some kind of discount (or discounted bundle).
The monthly fee will the the last thing to drop in price. I could see the actual retail price go from $60 down to $40 very quickly though.

Would be nice if the lifetime membership was on the ps3 also. That might be why the PC is selling so much better. That is why I plan on getting it for the PC. I would get it for the PS3 so I can sit back and play it and not be at a desk but that lifetime membership is the deal for me.

amen, if the lifetime memebership was on ps3, id consider it.
seriously tho, with the success of this game. specially for me because its a action based button mash to a degree, i wouldnt doubt seeing more of these.

I am so fucking annoyed right now. I decided to open up my copy only to realize there is a 16gb mandatory install. 16gb? what the fuck? I literally deleted everything on my system and my 20gb hard drive is still 2 gb short.
This is why I don't fuck with my ps3 other than to play blu-rays. Sony completely gave a giant fuck you to any early adopters of their system.

I'm used to having to clear out my hard drive for these b.s. mandatory installs but 16gb is downright bullshit for an install size. How are they not screwing their customer base by forcing them to purchase a bigger hard drive if they want to play any of the systems games.
You are right about one thing though, I should have checked before purchasing. I had a $20 gaming coupon that expired today and bought it on a whim, I never would have imagined not being able to play it at all. I mean I'm used to the headache of wiping my hard drive to play other games but to not even be able to play at all even after completely wiping the drive, that's just shit. Even if I had seen the 16gb install size I would have figured I would be fine since the ps3's 20gb hard drive gives 18gb available space.

I still have a stock one but my is the old 60 gig and has for the most part been used for blu-rays. May upgrade later but really see no point as of now. My 360 on the other hand I needed to jump from the 20 gig to something more.

I've already pointed out that it was my fault for not checking the back of the box but I never would have guessed a install size that big.
Anyways, I've since cooled down and am looking to head out to best buy and get this drive

The drive Big posted is a better deal but I have a 10% off coupon and $40 in rewards certs. Plus with how little I use this system there is no way I would ever need 500 gigs.

That's the only reason I'm not buying the game, simply can't afford yet another monthly fee (internet/XBL/Netflix) on top of everything else.
If it had a free to play option I'd be all over this, as it is though I'll most likely never buy it.

All those free 2 play games, do they have monthly content updates? I figured they only released every couple of months, where as the dcuo devs have stated they plan to have a steady flow of things per month. If they do sizeable content updates on the free2 play every 6 weeks or so that would be great.
They have monthly content updates, however, while technically being "free", they really aren't. Yes, you can play through the game totally free, but your enjoyment in most cases would be severely hampered. F2P MMO's generally rely on micro-transactions where you'd have to buy better armor, weapons, etc... as you play through.

FYI, if anyone else has buyer's remorse, best buy is currently taking this as a trade in. Site says $30, but they gave me $33 when I went in. Probably won't last long and it'll likely be the only chance to get some money for a used copy without ripping someone off on eBay.

Everyone has problems with mics on this game. After doing some research for a few hours, it's believed that when server volume is high or at peak times, the mic cuts out and will not return until the server is reset (some time in the middle of the night).
Its easily the biggest problem in the game right and is almost a deal breaker with me. I'm contemplating NOT renewing my subscription until the mics are fixed to 100%.
Thankfully I have a PS3 chat pad which makes matters a little better, but the other 2 people I play with do not. Its very hard to coordinate an attack with no speach

amazon is accepting it for $33.00 as well. Wasnt sure if I was going to open my copy from the b2g1, but I might try this out and if I dont like it just send it to amazon. Im sure theyll start selling monthly cards sooner or later.

I wholeheartedly disagree.
If an MMO's good, I find it quite easy to spend the $15 a month on it. They'll introduce new content frequently enough to keep it fresh and there's always another objective to achieve. In the event you ever find it stale, you'll have the option to cancel the account (while retaining your characters...usually), until a new patch comes up with new stuff to do.
If the MMO's too good, it becomes the only game I play, and can in fact save me money. Some MMO's are so addicting, they can actually make you feel like playing other games is a waste of time...as the time spent on that game is time you could be spending in the MMO.
As to whether DC:UO was that good...from my time in the Beta, I didn't think so.

Dead Space is a fantastic series, but the campaign mode is only 10-12 hours. The multiplayer aspect of the game is not worth the purchase considering its an after thought and only added on (think bioshock 2)
To me, a game that cost $60 should net you more than 10-12 hours. I played DCUO for about 65 hours or so already.

I'm alright with spending that much on a short game. To me it all depends on experience. Arkham Asylum was one of my favorite games I've ever played, payed at full price, and would do so again. and that game only took me about 5 hours to get through, 6 if you count platinuming it.

if youre into mmorpgs i can see your point but for me personally i cant do it. this game was the first and only mmorpg ive ever played and i liked it but from a money standpoint i could and would never spend 15 a month to play a game. even if i got it for free i wouldnt.
theres too many games with great online play that you can play for free i understand what it is youre paying for having read most of the posts in this topic but for me i cant do it. for what you pay in fees you could get a new game in 4 months or a few decent used games.
add to that all the great games weve got coming down the line for ps3 this year and for me i say no. but by playing dcuo i understand the appeal of mmorpgs more and i see how easy it is to get hooked on them.

I picked this up with some trade in credit, and I really don't see the hate. Yea it has most of the same kinds of missions that most mmos do (kill [x] of [y], bring me [a] you get from [b]) but the execution is far better than any other super hero mmo that i've played.
Don't get me wrong, champions and city of heroes are nice games, but there's something about seeing Superman and Batman that just does it for me. I've been a DC fan since I was a little kid, so having Nightwing join me on a mission was pretty freakin' awesome.
Kind of shocked that there hasn't been a DCOU wiki put together yet, but i guess that'll come in time.

I'll wait until the game is clearance'd out. The game seems to lack longevity compared to other MMOs and pricing the PS32 version $10 more but still charging $15 a month is laughable. The least they could have done is keep the game price $49.99. Also, why is there no incentive for PS+ members, perhaps $5 off? Way to drop the ball Sony.

This is by far one of the most bipolar games I have ever played.
Levels 1 -30 are decently fun although most of it is fetch quest and collect a thons with no creativity what so ever. Hey, its really fun to be a super hero. But when you reach the level cap which you will in under a week of even the most casual play it does such a hard 180 that I am sure we can win a suit for whiplash.
The end game content is pathetic. I have been asking people questions this entire week because I was confused as to what to do after I completed every single quest in the game. (I am seriously telling you that you can complete every single solo quest in the game in a week...I thought this was a MMO Shouldnt you have hundreds of quests?) It came a point in which I started doing the same quest I did earlier and when I final got answers it was mind blowing.
My question, what am I suppose to do at level 30 if I beat all of the quests? Answer? Do the same 15 or so things over and over again for infinity to collect marks to turn in for gear.
Waaaa? To this day I still feel like I am missing something because it simple can not be this many people in general excited to do the same duo over and over again.
By the way, this game has the worst (and I mean it) community in the history of video games. I have never seen so many people get completely ripped apart for asking very simple questions. What I would kinda like to know is how this game qualifies as a MMO? Yeah there might me a lot of players on the sever but you cant interact with any more than what? 8 people for raids? Hell a decent amount of the content is DUOS which is 2 people. MAG is 100x the MMO this game is.
If anyone in here knows what I am suppose to do at level 30 please fill me in. The game isnt good but I like it enough to keep playing....but I am not about to drop 15 a month to do the same thing over and over.
EDIT: I also feel lied too. At no point in my journey did I ever have a epic battle with the heroes/villains of the dc universe and the other players. Yes you can have bounties on some heroes but they are not part of any actual story and are more like random dragon in forest.
This post doesnt even touch on the fact the game has so many bugs that I feel like I need a can of Raid to play it. Might be good in a couple years when they get everything together and the maybe I will come back but for now this game is a complete disaster.

Should jump on the official forums if you're unsure what to do at 30.
At Level 30 you can start going for your Iconic Armors. I mean there's also daily missions that give you Marks of Allegiance. When you acquire 10 of these you can trade at a vendor within Watchtower for a Mark of Triumph which is used to get your Tier 1 armor.
Also you can go after PVP armor as well if you're big on that.
Anyhow, doing those daily missions you'll eventually acquire some good gear. Once you do I'd attempt Duos, which will award ya Marks of Triumph. Collect these for your Tier 1 armor. It'll take awhile at first but as you become better skilled along with good armor you'll be able to take on Hard Mode Alerts. From these you'll also be able to get Marks of Triumph for beating each boss in the Hard Alerts.
I know it gets tedious but definitely pays off when you can run Raids and other stuff. Then there's also the update later this month so that's something to look forward to as well.

People still play this game? I was thinking of picking it up this weekend. Have they patched a lot of bugs? Does voice chat work now?

I have yet to get voice chat to work. Honestly, with respect to people who like the game I strongly advice you to not pick this game up at all. Wait about 6 months to a year and then pick it up. If you want to be safe at least wait another 2 weeks when everyones first free month would be over...that will be a better gauge of the population. I personally think it will drop off significantly.
There is no reason to own this game at this point, there are still a ton of bugs and the Que system is so severely broken that it makes doing a lot of the missions a joke. I have yet to finish most of the alerts although I try on a daily basis.
I took a pic of this with my phone and if I wasnt lazy I would upload it but yesterday I tried once again to play a Alert. I qued up and waited exactly (I kept track) 17:42 seconds to even load into one. Upon loading in it was one that was already started (this happens so often that it should be a embarrassment) I played that alert for exactly 166 min 56 seconds and went through 35 FUCKING PEOPLE loading in then quitting! I spent 33 min standing around inside of the alert waiting for new players to load into my alert (again I counted) and I final just quit the game when I got to a part that I couldnt beat myself and I didnt feel like waiting for another 20 min for more people to load in.
That is VERY typical of my experience playing...if you dont already have 5 or 6 people that you play with you might as well not even try because its a complete crap shoot if it will work or not.
And look no further than LXL Guy post (Which was very informative and well written) and see exactly what the future holds. Grinding for gear. I know grinding is part of every MMO but it cant be 80% of the game. Once you hit 30 they just forget about the whole Brainiac trying to take over the world bit and its grinding for gear all day everyday.
Skubish just do A LOT of research before you buy it..do not pick it up on a whim. You will either love it or hate it.

I took a pic of this with my phone and if I wasnt lazy I would upload it but yesterday I tried once again to play a Alert. I qued up and waited exactly (I kept track) 17:42 seconds to even load into one. Seriously, I just played Smallville for 76 min with my one other friend....got half way through everyone quit game wouldnt load anyone else in so we were forced to quit. It happens every single time I play a alert. Went through about 12 guys during that run.
The problem of loading into half done or glitched Alerts is number 1 on the official forums from what I can tell. From personal experience whenever I load into a Alert I check the scorecard first and more often than not I am the 14th person to load in and the game has been going on for well over an hour.
It happens so often that I would love to sit and watch someone else play so I can prove to myself its not me.
EDIT: By the way Sku, their very first content patch is late. It was suppose to come on the 15th week..no sign of it, might be a one time thing but its looks strange when you cant make your own deadline for content patch on the first go round. Again, all I am saying is research research research.

I think whether or not you will enjoy the game depends on what you expect out of it. I like playing a super hero. I like running around and getting in battles with villains (play on pvp server) and helping other people out and testing different power combos.
The maps are huge with plenty of collections and things to find. Get a few friends and join a league.
It isn't like other mmos but it is fun to play. Because your level/gear matters less than your playing ability it is fun to make a new toon and be level 7 and get jumped by some 30 who really doesn't know what cancels or beats what and wax them.
I enjoy it and haven't gotten tired, and if they stick to a decent content update schedule (they claim monthly but we'll see) it should stay fun. I already reupped for the 3 month deal.

I think I look at the game similar to you nuromutt. I just enjoy being a superhero and I'm not trying to rush through it so it stays enjoyable to me. My highest level character is only Level 14 and I haven't even messed with villians yet. Sure I wish it wasn't $10 a month, but if they keep content up its no worse than DLC in other games.
My characters are PyreBlade on Killing Joke and Rahzar on Crisis if anyone wants to play. I do agree with the comments that having a league or group of friends to play with makes this game much more enjoyable.

No I wouldn't get it on the PC. If you stretch it out it will take 2 weeks to hit 30 after that it seems like you have nothing to do. I know it does not take 2 weeks but I really didn't do much when I played and spent most my time trying to get into pvp. Once I got to 30 I really didn't want to play anymore. I tried some of the end game stuff and said the hell with it. I would hold off for a year and see what happens.

Pvp and pve are on different shards but you can warp over at certain locations at any time. So no real need to decide because you can swap easily. I'd say try pve to level up then warp to pvp but up to you.
Yes a lot of heroes i think, but that means more people to team up with. I heard it was hard to find teams for villains but maybe not now it it is free. Some of the content like alerts and raids, you need good players.

All you have to do is head to your faction's main base. That would be the Watchtower (WT) for Heroes, and the Hall for villians. Within the home bases, there is a phase shifter. I know in the WT it is on the floor above the auction room, in the center of the complex. Look for yellow signs. Might be on the map too, or you could ask.
All you do is walk into it and activate/interact. It'll ask you if you want to change phases, then confirm your choice.
All it does it make it so you can be attacked at almost any time if you go to the PVP side.
For PVE, if you want to PVP without shifting, you can type /pvp and it'll flag you for PVP (only versus opposite faction. for same faction, you'll have to look into dueling). When you are done type /pvp again and if you don't do any PVP within 5 mins it will clear your flag.

I've been wondering this as well. I'd like to make the jump to premium and this would do the trick. I'm just afraid I won't see any of the benefits of the DLC until WAY later into the game unless I make a new character with the DLC features.

I was looking into getting this as well. Form what I read, they drop an item in your inventory that changes your power to Light or you can just make a new character. If you're a hero, your green, villains are yellow.
The only noticeable thing the DLC adds other than that are three instances or alerts.

Yeah the GL content gets you new = armor, weapons, duos, alerts, FEATS (main thing you get from that is skill points). And of course the power set, which is a controller.
Now, if you want to start a new character and level up a GL I would do that. BUT I wouldn't touch the alerts or duos until 30 with gear and skill points.
If you want to just level up and swap later, I'm pretty sure you can to... Just start a CTRLr (controller) so you get an idea of what your are doing, but honestly GL plays so differently from the other to CTRLr classes.

Ok? So are you saying some people won't give up their disc because some dlc is tied to it? My understanding is that when you start up the disc, it prompts you to download the new client. Thus making the old client extinct and the disc useless. That's my understanding at least and why i was hoping to get someone's game case/ disc if they're done with it. The servers really do have some issues. Expescially considering half the time I can't even get to the character select screen in order to begin the login countdown. It just sticks on one of the loading screen.
Now I cant seem to do anything at all. Even when I can get to the character select screen I hit x to login and nothing happens. I hear a clicking sound but that's it. Nothing else happens. Not a good start.....

PREMIUM ACCESS
At the time the game is transitioned to free-to-play, all existing DCUO accounts with inactive subscriptions will be granted Premium Access. After the game is transitioned to free-to-play, Premium Access will be granted to any player that spends at least U.S. $5.00 (or the foreign equivalent) or 500 Station Cash on items in the DCUO in-game marketplace, or that purchases a DCUO DLC Pack. Premium Access does not expire.

There is no login priority for the different membership levels...yet. From what I've read, supposedly Legendary users will get priority login sometime in the future, but nothing was said for Premium / Free users.

Finally finished my download of the game this morning, couldn't get on as the servers were down, and now managed to make my first character (Praxus07, villain, Circe follower) but still stuck on the loading page (the one with the big rotating circle at the right bottom) for 10 minutes now.
Also got the GL DLC, making a new hero GL type with it....

I've really had no issues getting ingame. There's usually a short delay, like 30 seconds, but since I got in on Tuesday it's been smooth. I did buy the DLC, and a helm, boots, and wings though, so did spend $15 already.

I really wish my local GS stores weren't a buncha nazis about tossing out pennied shit, since it'd have been so much easier to just grab the disc version of this game and load up the first 11gb's of it from there.
It's still a 16+gb download for this game, right? I guess I'll never play this then since it'd take till June 2012 to download that much on my connection.
Oh and has anyone made an EL HOARDO character yet? If not, then someone should.

Can't really get over how fast my sinestro char type has leveled. I remade the char last night before I went to sleep, only played through the starting ship before logging off. Played for just a few hours tonight and am already level 12.
The loot though ticks me off. I got all the parts for the greco-roman outfit, except the shoulders and belt. The belt you can only get at level 30, and the shoulders are a drop in the vault. Why do they make getting a full set so difficult?

My problem now is with the chat panes. On my tv everything always extends past the edges of the screen (GTA4 especially I could never see half of the cell phone), and that chat panel is right up on the edge so the players names get cut off and I can't see who's saying what. Plus the text around the screen edges is amazingly blurry.
Also in groups I never get any loot drops since I have no idea how to claim an item. I've done the scarecrow halloween run 3 times now and never gotten any loot from going in there.
Did notice my sinestro guy has started leveling much slower now, played all morning and only got to level 18.

Can't you fix the TV issue within the settings? Seems like you need to change to native or 16:9 or adjust edge masking if available or something. Unless your playing on sd

try doing some of the tougher campaigns. seems like light players have a 2 to 4 level advantage to others if you know how to mix things up. the claw weapon as well as the whip work well to stun enemies so you can get in alot of hits and keep them still.
and when you get the helicopter ring skill holy shit its game over that thing does massive damage to multiple enemies.

I have a Sanyo first gen tube HDtv from 2006 (I think), and it's always been this way. There's really no settings to adjust other than color, the only screen size settings are standard (4:3), full (16:9), zoom1/2. There's no edge masking or anything in the tv settings. When I hit the 4:3 setting it still cuts off the picture so about 1/2 inch of the game picture is gone around the edges. I keep it in 16:9 mode since it's a widescreen set.
I did go into the game setting menu and tried adjusting some things in there, but the only real fix is to enlarge the text font, and to really make that readable is to make it so large one sentence fills in the chat panel. It's fine when I click the full window button ingame and the chat pane fills the entire screen, but who wants to do that constantly.
As far as looting with groups, it's just that I have no idea how the controls work, what to hit on the controller, and what that huge icon that pops up is for that looks like a safe with an explosion behind it. So grouping while fun nets me nothing...LOL. My character was the higest scoring damage dealer in the scarecrow group twice in a row, and got zilch for my troubles....

Of the ones below level 20, he is without a doubt the hardest. I don't know if it's a glitch or what, but during the fight he tends to "reset" causing full health for him again. The others you mentioned aren't that bad, but I have never been able to beat him without some help.
Still haven't tried going against Powergirl or Steel yet.

Yeah, they are outdoors too:
Powergirl is a Level 29 Bounty if I remember correctly, but never got around to fighting her. There are others just in the world you can fight like Steel is who is hanging out in Steelworks near the entrance. There are two columns or something that are connected by a walkway near the top and he is hanging out between them. He's not there all the time, but I've never seen anyone actually try and fight him either.
There are others too like Superman and Green Lantern in Metropolis that I don't think are for bounties, but show up in random areas that you can fight. I tried fighting GL one time...took all of 5 seconds for me to be killed. I think the ones without bounties that are in the main world are always level 30.

Have you guys been reading the official forums over there for the game? Seems like the people who pay for Legendary access are not fond of anyone that's free to play, or even premuim for that matter. Lots of talk about people free to play/premiums ninjaing loot, not wanting to invite anyone to raids or whatever without thoroughly checking that the people they play with are already geared up, everyone must have mics to raid, etc...Not a very welcoming vibe.

Best of luck I would say since those new alerts are definitely a challenge if you're under geared. Even with T 2.5/3 I still had some slight problems but if you have a good team you'll breeze on through.

I don't blame them for hating on the free/premiums. Heck, even I can say I have an elitism attitude as well.
Any time new players come in they always seem to ninja loot even if rules were set down already. Happens too often since days long past that you grow jagged ready to chew that players face off.
Now the checking of Gear for raids and such is understandable. I wouldn't want to carry any player on through who's sporting greens & blues since they haven't gone through the struggle of duos/hmas to obtain a few pieces of T1. If you find a league that will help you cool but, often times don't PUG for you'll always get inspected. Plus if its one of the later Raids i.e. BC3, or any of the FOS ones you'll be inspected off the back.
So yeah, of course there's no love for the new people. You just gotta work your way up the ladder to a respectable level.
Then again maybe there should be a CAG League/Legion to help some of ya progress through.

My character is still in his late teen levels but I got curious and switched to the PVP server. The game has become so much more exciting (so far) when any villain you see can go after you. I managed to barely take down a level 26 last night, I'm sure I was just lucky but he went after me first.
Makes the PVP missions much easier to do as well since you don't have to get permission to battle with a villain. I was stalking some from the roof tops and jumping down on them unexpectedly
My character is Fire 0pal (the o is a zero) if anyone wants to help me out sometime.
