Apple recently came out with a new ipod which is cheaper. Now I'm interested in one. :D So what do you guys think about the ipod? Mainly I want to know about how the battery life was, is it easily breakable, and did you think it was worth it spending all that money for it.

I think it is well designed but lacking features and sound quality. Then there's the price. No true CAG should pay for an ipod.

Have had one for almost 2 years. Has become indispensible (sp?). Especially now, as I am just starting to use it for document transfer and digital photo storage (while on vacations). I have never had any problems with the sound quality, so i don't know what that is all about.
However, I have never owned a Microsoft based PC, only Macs, so I am a bit biased.

I have owned both pc and macs and a few different mp3 players by far the ipod is the best mp3 player, it does so much more then play music like asaraa said photos and document transfer as well as you can boot off of it. plus the design is great yes I will talk about the bad parts
the 3gen one battery charging was based on timing (2 hours a time) so you would have to charge it about 2-3 times to get a full charge.
The white skin is very scratch prone and a case is a must buy with the initial purchase.
very durable though even though they look fragile they are durabile like a mac truck my friend ipod has seen more damage then anything you can imagane and it runs fine.

There are other players that are just as good as the iPod (Better in my opinion) and they are much cheaper. The Creative Labs players are perfect examples, lower price and excellent quality. I have nothing against the iPod but it just isn’t worth the premium the Apple charges for it.

For me it wouldn't be big enough. I have to have all my music with me cause I'm just sure that I'd want to listen to the one thing I don't have. I rip everything at 320 kbs, so that means a 60 gig drive is a minimum for me.
That's why I don't own a hdd player yet.

Seems like way too much for an Mp3 player. I use a Sony Hi Minidisc player. The 1 gig mini discs hold around 30-40 hours each.

I think ignorant is saying the iPod is "lacking features and sound quality" when you don't even own one, only messing around with your friend's.
I'd love to hear of some of the features it's lacking.

The two major things the iPod has going for it are size, and an excellent user interface. I've had a couple mp3 players in the past - one creative HD, and one Rio flash player. I also use my N-Gage as an mp3 player, and I used a PDA as a flash-based player for some time. Of all of those, the iPod is hands down the best.
The size is a huge factor for me - the Creative I had, the Nomad 2 LX, was about the size of a CD player, and had one of the worst user interfaces I could possibly imagine. All the flash players just didn't have the capacity to hold enough stuff.
There's a real paradigm shift, once all your music is on a thing the size of a tape deck - it makes you think about music differently, and how to use a music player. Now, there is only one device in my life that plays music, and that's the iPod. It goes to work, it goes in the car, it goes home. When I'm taking a shower, it's cranking out the tunes onto a boombox (well away from the shower, thank you).
There's a *huge* difference, to me, between constantly shifting out some music onto a flash player, and having the whole thing there. There was another huge difference between being able to conveniently carry it in my pocket, vs. carrying it around in my bag. And yet another huge difference being able to quickly access and organize my music.
Expensive, yes. Are the Nomad Zen or the new Rio HD players good alternatives? Sure. But the iPod is extremely convenient, very well designed, and perfectly suitable for everything I want it to be.

The Ipod sucks, and not because I'm cheap.
The whole point of listenting to music is to get the best sound.
So why get inferior sound?
Get an Iriver or a Creative Zen, they have the best sound out of all of them.

Two words:
RIO CARBON
Smaller than an Ipod Mini and longer battery life. Now, it has 5gb which is more than a Mini but less than a real Ipod. But having only 5gb versus 20gb or so makes sense once you see the size. This little thing is amazing and will take a dent out of the Ipod sales once everyone gets to check one out. Worth a look if you are looking for a new mp3 player but, by all means, keep your Ipod or Ipod Mini if you have one and are happy with it.

Funny, I thought the whole point of listening to music was entertainment. Silly me, I obviously must not be enjoying myself since I didn't get $300 headphones to get the best quality sound possible. If you want the best sound possible, what are you doing listening to MP3s anyway? It's a lossy compression algorithm (Even at 320kbs). You need to be listening to DVD-audio, through the most expensive pre-amp/amp combination, on $5000 speakers precisely placed in a sound-proofed room.
Me? I like my music portable, so I can drown out the sounds of construction as I take my walks. I have an iPod mini, and I enjoy the hack out of it. Decent battery life, great interface, and I love the ability to use it as a portable hard drive.

Got mine as a present. I love it.
If anyone complains of bad sound it's likely the case that they don't know how to operate an ipod. Or a computer.
You can choose the bit rate you encode at. If you choose a low rate (I don't think you can go lower than 128 on an ipod...but why would you?) you'll get lesser sound. Choose a higher bit rate, get better sound. That's universal. Have a problem with the output? Get different headphones.
Bottom line, the ipod is a great mp3 player. Is it the best? I've never owned anything else so I can't say. But I like mine.

The problem isn't the encoding or the headphones, it's the ipod's (http://www.ipoding.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid= 1141) lower >90 dB SNR (4G). Compare that to the Zen's (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?prodid=10274) >97 dB and the Karma's >96 dB. The 140's (http://www.iriveramerica.com/products/H140.aspx) has a rating of >90 dB but offers a much greater feature set than the ipod and roughly double the battery life from what I've found.
The bottom line is that even the Dell DJ is better than an ipod unless you're just in love with the design.

I've had experience with two. One is bigger which I use to back up my data files and as a sort of system. That's 20 gigs.
I use the ipod mini for walking around and listening to music. The interface is probably the best you can get on the market, and the pre-set equalizer settings are pretty good and realistic. My only beef is that sometimes you can't see the whole band's name when searching for someone, so, when I listen to things like "Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter", dragon quarter isn't shown, show I'm like wtf which bof. But I fixed that by doing BOF: DQ.
The back light is great, and while people bitch about the battery...10 hours works for me. Even on long bus rides i've never had a problem, because you tend to not listen to 10 hours of straight music. If you use the back light all the time, drop the hour usage to 8.
The volume doesn't have that high of a max, but it's still great. (By max, i mean it doesn't make my ears bleed when i max it out). It's prolly cause i'm going def as it is.
It's a hard drive, so naturally you'll need it replaced eventually. I assume it will cost 50-100 dollars to have it done, but with what my friends have already spent on other mp3 players, I wouldn't really consider a hinderance. I have jogged with my ipod and it has never affected the hard drive. There is a 2 second loading time between songs, but that doesn't bug me. Depends on how impatient you are.
But I love it cosmetically and even its functionality. I've had experience with the dell digital juke box and prefer the ipod over it, especially because of the recent price drop.

"better" is subjective. Show me a 4GB (or better) MP3 player/harddrive with no moving parts, firewire support, and a Flash memory based storage mechanism for $125. That would be something better for half the cost in my book.

Nomad's are really cheap alternatives to dell digital jukebox's and ipods. In general, the 20 gb dell digital is around 2-3 hundred, so its almost like buying an ipod.
My brother had a nomad, so did my friend, was about 140 for 10 gigs of space, but it lasted about a year and a half, ran on batteries, and had somewhat of a cumbersome interface. But it would have been the mp3 player i would have bought had I not have gotten the ipod/dell digital.
Your best bet is to wait for a sale at a local store, or just to pay up front. It's rare for any of these suckers to go on a big sale. You might save 20-40 bucks, but that's chump change when it comes to mp3 players.

Yeah, I was about to say myself...
While the ipod was expensive, they have dropped in price (especially previous generations). And there really is nothing that compares to it's design, interface, and quality except for the dell digital, which is a close second, and is the next best thing for the price.

The iPod is slowly being out paced by competetor products. Each new Player comes out with newer features and aims to cut the price just a little more.
Right now the thing that keeps them selling so well is name recognition and in a few months when portable video players start getting big they'll have to innovate or fall behind. Which means a the 3rd or forth new expesive device from them in under 4 years, which will errode cnsumer confidence.
The best they can hope to do at this point is drop the iPod Mini's price below anyother MP3 player on the market and try to get sales on the merits of it's size and affordability... oh wait Apple... affordability? so much for that plan.

You've got to be kidding. At a high quality level it isn't difficult at all. I own about 800 audio CDs. At 320k for music and lower for other material such as spoken word it took a small fraction of that colelction to fill my 10 GB player. A 40 GB unit wouldn't hold more than a third of what I have on hand. Even using the prefereed WMA for smaller files at equivalent quality it still adds up.
My current player is a 10 GB D-Link Rock-it. No longer made and the size of a mass market paperback book but it has one massive advantage. It was free.

The best they can hope to do at this point is drop the iPod Mini's price below anyother MP3 player on the market and try to get sales on the merits of it's size and affordability... oh wait Apple... affordability? so much for that plan.
yeah but when video comes out...its gonna be so much more expensive for that ability...i remember reading up on bill gate's mp3 player...
But I do agree, competition is beginning to close the gap which will be nice for the market.

:P to you! I know I am being a hypocrite, but dont make fun of other peoples music choices. and all I am saying is why do noobs think they can tell off the people that have been at the site for a long time? I mean are they trying to get banned? It happened at one the old sites I used to go to. a crapload of people were banned because they ripped on the owner.
and wow! you have been on CAG a whole 2 months more than me lol. ah well it still makes you my elder.......
There's a difference between a noob analyzing what someone said and responding and a noob being a dick. In the latter, the noob should be banned, but if he presents a valid argument, let em stay.

thats kind of my point. Its okay if your analyzing, but not being a dick. but OCCASIONALLY, its alright to be a dick. especially in the case of everyone making fun of DLF. then its exceptable.

Personally, I think they're kinda stupid. I mean if you need to have like 80 hours of music with you at all times, that's your deal but for me it seems like a huge waste of money. They just seem to be the "trendy item" for people to have these days. Remember back when only the cool/rich kids had cell phones? Yeah....now everyone has one and no one gives a damn.
I personally hate Macs in general (and yes I have lots of experience with them) b/c I'm forced to use them for my editing needs and they crash every FUCKING TIME trying to do what they are heralded for being able to do. And don't get me started on that fucking one button mouse....
Anyways, if you for some insane reason need ungodly amounts of music available to you at all times, get one. If I ever got one, I'd use it once and it'd rot on my desk next to my ministick player after about a week.

Ipod rules.. yes not a cag item.. but make life enjoyable, those who bash it and dont own or never owned one... simply are ignorant.
Well, that statement is as shaq-fuing ignorant as they come. Some people know all the information needed to know about the iPod, and just don't need one with that much space, like me, or wouldn't like to pay out the ass.
Whoa whoa whoa Cool off there "sparky!" As I said "yes its not a cag item." Do you own one? Im guessing not .. and its your money... whatever you own I hope it brings you bliss. My Ipod is great. I have a 10gb one and have about 5 gb of music the other have is devoted to HD space
You know what Im not getting into this with you.. Cool! you dont want an iPod I really dont care, but I enjoy the hell out of mine. Just dont go sounding all hot headed and might I add jealous, That I used the monies I saved with cheapassgamer.. and spent it on a quality MP3 player..
No, you spent it on a fashion statement when you could have had something better for half the cost.
opinions & assholes... everybody has one
There are opinions and then there are facts, and the fact is that the ipod is overpriced and overmatched compared to it's competitors. If you love yours that's fine, but some people prefer quality to style.
Honestly I dont wanna argue with ya, but I went back to check your earlier posts to this thread.. To see if you posted a recommedation of one of these "quality non style players" and funny thing was I didnt see you post anything.. as amatter of fact you state you currently dont own a HDD player.
hmm?? So youre currently waiting for this "next best thing?" I have a friend like this. He covets my ipod becuase I've use it all the time and enjoyed it and yet hes always bashing it...but please show me a link to these cheaper better players. maybe my friend can get one... :D
I mentioned both cheaper (Nomad Zen)and better (H120, Karma) players in my posts. I also specifically said that I'm waiting for at least a 60gig player from iriver to come out because I already have over 40gigs of mp3s. Right now I make due with my slimx 550 when I travel.

For me, I use it as storage of my mp3's and important data, or as a vessel for data transfer. 20 gigs is great for me, i have about 5 gigs (varied music that i can enjoy in a week's time for a trip).

Hmmm I musta missed it.. I went back and rechecked back posts. Originally I scanned for posts with a picture of "Taylor Rain"
Yeah I also did a quick glance of the Karma (Actually I meant iRiver.. saw the wrong link) there are some nice features.. Ogg vorbis Supports.(Open Source very nice) FM receiver (neat but not necessary {however it should be one of those throw away features every mp3 player should have IMO, including the iPod}) 2 things that dont help me.. USB2 no use to me, I have Firewire and usb1 also about 40 bucks more than the iPod of same storage size.
Dont get me wrong its nice.. but Im not in a buying phase right now. But I will admit I was wrong about you not posting anything suggestions, And I did check out what you offered as a alternative. Still the iPod was and is my choice for now.. Plus you cant rule out iTunes Music Store either. 8) I dont think my friend would buy the karma either, hes cheaper than me.

Even though Apple didn't include all of the rarely used (and just because YOU use it doesn't change this) features that the other players often hype, the simplicity of the iPod ends up making it a complete joy to use. I have owned an iPod and iPod Mini. Both are great, and completely worth it. Look for products with value--not cheap stuff. It's pretty apparent what kind of response the iPod is going to get here. Oh, and people--Apple is in VERY good shape right now. Going to be 1999 all over again.

The Ipod sucks, and not because I'm cheap.
The whole point of listenting to music is to get the best sound.
So why get inferior sound?
Get an Iriver or a Creative Zen, they have the best sound out of all of them.
Try to understand, okay? Music makes noise. NOISE. N-O-I-S-E. You have to listen to noise. Which means, if you used your head, the point of having a mp3 player would be to get the one with the best noise!
And if you great speakers and a great sounding mp3 player, it would sound even BETTER. Try to think about that.

I'd like to bet that you've never personally listened to any one of these devices. But thanks for the cookie cutter advice that you taking from someone else's mouth.
Actually different devices give different quality of music. It all depends on how good the sound equalizer on it is. That's what makes the difference. Try the different devices and see.
If the device blotched the sound equalizer, then the device will sound worse. This is common. My Pocket PC, actually sounds better then any MP3 player I use, when I use one special program, due to its usage of equalizers.

au·tism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ôtzm)
n.
A psychiatric disorder of childhood characterized by marked deficits in communication and social interaction, preoccupation with fantasy, language impairment, and abnormal behavior, such as repetitive acts and excessive attachment to certain objects. It is usually associated with intellectual impairment.

Third of all, unlike you, who probably wastes his whole life in front of a pc, I have a life, so that '4 hours it took me to respond' was me having a life... When people don't respond for 4 hours, it usually means they are off doing something else. It's really a easy variable to comprehend, but you're too stupid to understand normal logic, so...
BTW, I so love how you ignored everything I said and went to insult me. Usually thats the sign of a person who is losing an argument, and wants to... well, to put it bluntly, cry like a baby (You can argue that I'm doing the same, but when you call people retards, usually they are going to NOT respond nicely back). From the way you act, I assume you aren't older then 16, or more intelligent a rock, so I'll make this brief... My point of beinging up used things was to show an EXAMPLE. It was maybe a harsh example, but it was still an example. When you buy something, usually you buy for one specific reason. That reason determines how you use it.
Take for instance, a car. You buy a car to drive, not to 'get a great cd player'. If you get a car with a great cd player, but drives terribly, pretty soon, you won't have a car (I know this is a poor example, but...). You can, of course, buy expensive cars that look great and don't drive that well (Which is what I consider an Ipod), but what you really buy a car for is to drive, and you should never forget that.

Actually, if you watch Apple's online store, they have them for as low as $169.99 from time to time. I snagged mine (10GB) for $199 a few months back and use it pretty much every day.
The minis, though, are impossible to find cheap.

Pronounce? I never said you can't pronounce words, I said you can't write. Misspelled words are not everything, syntax is even bigger, but I will gladly bold all your grammatical errors and illogical sentences that don't make sense.

When people don't respond for 4 hours, it usually means they are off doing something else. It's really a easy variable to comprehend, but you're too stupid to understand normal logic, so...
Well a 4 hour interval isn't much. It's more likely that you stayed on for the duration of the 4 hours, then signed off then back on, at least that's how I am; once I sign off that means I'm done, and I don't go back on for the rest of the day, usually even longer.
BTW, I so love how you ignored everything I said and went to insult me. How did I ignore everything you said? You didn't really say much for me to respond to, except your used clothes comparison which was competely illogical.
Yes, it is a bad example and once again, it makes NO sense.
I'm posting this, but of course, you'll just insult me because you're too dumb to understand anything thats bigger then 5 letters.
The reason why I "insult" you is because you're really annoying me; you're putting up an arguement with absolutely no good points, and won't give up. Again, because you're autistic - you believe you're something you really are not. ie. you think that you're putting up an arguement and that you're sounding logical and intelligent but you really are not. Now do you get it?
