My fiance works in the same office as I do, so they told me that because we had a son together, I couldn't work in my position any longer so they'd be letting me go when she returns from maternaty leave. My boss called me into his office yesterday and told me he was unhappy that I was "doing nothing more than what my job required" because our entire office in complete disarray between my fiance being gone and us being very short-staffed. He told me that he was waiting for me to volunteer to do more work in order to keep my job, but wouldn't ask me to do anything. I told him considering he had just laid me off, I wasn't going to volunteer to do anything other than sit at my desk and apply to other jobs while I'm working.

He went off on my suggesting I should start coming in on weekends unpaid, I said I would if he paid me the legally required overtime (since I already work 40 hours a week, and spend 12 hours a day between benig at work and commuting), and he refused. He also said I should have gone home and had my fiance (who's on maternity leave) train me in our new scheduling system so I could do it, and I told him that I wasn't going to spend any more time out of my day doing work, especially at an hourly part time job.

The meeting basically ended with him saying that I do a superb job at the job I have, but don't take any initiative to do more. I told him that unless he reverses his decision to lay me off, he should consider himself lucky that I even show up and do my job.

I was talking about working at UPS with my family tonight and mentioned how when I initially took the job a couple years ago, they told me they offered tuition assistance to part-time employees, only to find out I had to be a manager when I tried to get it. My uncle, who is a lawyer, told me I had grounds for a legal case, but it's about two years old now. I wouldn't do it anyways. One bitch move countered by another is just twice a bitch.

Ya, that's my plan. They seem to be under the impression they don't have to, because I was hired as a temporary employee, but in MA once you've worked 640 hours at a job in a year you are no longer considered temporary, and I worked ~1600 last year.

Part of being an employee with seniority, in my opinion, is being able to admit when something has gone wrong, but most of the time they just pull the "I'M THE BOSS HERE!" shit. Back when I worked retail, we had this royal dumbass manager. Two stories about him stick out in my mind.

1: I was working a 10am to 7pm shift on my 21st birthday, and had dinner reservations that night with the girl whom almost became the first Mrs Plume. As I'm walking out at the end of my shift, he starts yelling at me - right at the front counter - about where the hell I was going. I told him my dept had coverage and we weren't too busy and my shift was over. I reminded him that it was my birthday and I had plans. He kept going on talking about firing me, right in front of everyone, and even the customers at the counter told him to let me go, which pissed him off more. (The next time I worked with him, he gave me every shit job in the place to get back at me. :lol:)

2: One Friday night, it seems they were firing about half of the floor sales people (I was electronics, so I was safe). Instead of waiting until the end of the shift, he tells everyone right at the beginning they were being let go at the end of the night. Guess what happened? Yep - they all punched out and left. There was me and one other guy handling all four departments on a busy Friday night. I heard the store manager chewed him out for that one.

The coda to this was one night I came in and saw Rich, one of the cool, but tough as nails managers. I knew I was supposed to be working with the asshat, so I asked Rich what was going on. He said, "I made the $$$$$$ cry and he walked out last night." I found out later that was exactly what happened: Rich blew up at the asshat until he cried and quit on the spot. I was always mad that I didn't get to witness that. :lol:

The last time I went to the zoo, the chimps would throw up and gobble it back up again. Then they'd repeat the process like 3-4 more times. When they are not throwing up, they are the funnest to watch, I think. I go to the zoo, just to watch primates. :)
