I see these all the time but why are they so desired by everyone? Every time I look around people act like they are getting bars of gold if they get one. Why are they so highly valued? I tried searching here to find out but it brought up WAY too many topics. Gmail is the Google email service that is going to roll out right?

yeah, its nice to have whatever name you want, and having something besides hotmail, yahoo, etc.. behind your email name

So having say 123@GuilewasNK.com instead of 123@yahoo.com is the main draw??

It is sought after due to its insane amount of storage (1 Gig per account) and a supposedly smooth interface (I say supposedly because I haven't given it much use yet). They aren't really valuable anymore though, as most anyone can give you an invite for free (like me).

No, to my knowledge you can't create your own domain. It's still yadda-yadda@gmail.com

The 100 megs that yahoo offers is more than enough for me.

That's another thing I don't understand, how does one get the power to invite?? Do you have to be emploed by google or something?

I'm not sure who was first distributing invites, but for a while they were very sought after. Only account owners could give out invites, and they only had a few to give. Now if you have an account and give away all your invites, you'll have a new set in a few days. I agree with you about the storage. I'll never fill a gig.

no, after a few weeks up to a month, you will get some invites in your inbox, usually 2 and then youll get 6 once you get rid of those

When I was given an invite (by a fellow CAG), I first had 6 invites. I gave those away within a day, and two days later, I had a fresh 6.

Ok, I see what you are saying Ledhed. That pretty much answers my questions. The gmail faq really didn't have any answers IMO.

Well, besides the extra storage space, Gmail has a pretty efficient interface; the JavaScript mailboxes runs a lot faster than Yahoo's HTML-based pages. Besides that, Google searching on your mail is nice, as is the more targeted (but less plentiful) advertisements, and the automatic threading of messages and their replies is a step forward in web-based mail. Really, the only way to compare is to actually use the service a bit. If you'd like an account, send me an e-mail address to send an invite to. (I actually have one sitting around that I've been itching to use.)

As for the invite methodology, it looks like Google employees were the first to take a crack at it, and then some lucky Bloggers got in the act (since Google bought the company). A beta account has definitely become far more common lately, which is a boon to people willing to start a fresh, spam-free, personal e-mail account (which I'm heavily considering). If I were to do that, my Yahoo address would basically enter contests, receive mailing list stuff, make online orders, post in forums (like CAG?) and stick around for old friends to contact me by. It's a great service, and I highly recommend it.

The anti spam stuff is also really good IMHO. I've had an account with them for a few months now and I have yet to see a single email that I didn't want or request in some manner.

Well, I managed to send that invite out (the one I was itching to send), so I guess anyone else who wants one will have to wait until Gmail sends me some more. (Checking back via PM or forum post might actually be a good idea in a few days.) Anyway, that makes my 7th invite accepted and 13th sent out. They're actually pretty fun to give away.
