The more I hear about this guy lately, the more I think he might be developing a mental illness from all the stress of failing at life. Like this recent article:

On the press offensive, Blagojevich has lined up national interviews--NBC, ABC, "The View" to run as his impeachment trail starts Monday before the Illinois state senate in Springfield.

Blagojevich, wearing a blue ivy league shirt, told NBC's Amy Robach that he has not prepared mentally for possibly going to prison. The impeachment was triggered by Blagojevich's Dec. 9 arrest on criminal charges, including trying to auction off President Obama's vacant senate seat.

As Dec. 9 unfolded, Blagojevich told NBC, "I thought about Mandela, Dr. King and Gandhi and tried to put some perspective to all this and that is what I am doing now."

Blagojevich is not going to participate in his defense because he says the rules are rigged against him. He will not be in Springfield for his trial; instead he will be doing nationally televised interviews.

The governor told NBC that the state Senate trial will be so unfair, he could bring in "15 angels and 20 saints led by Mother Theresa" to testify on his behalf and "it wouldn't matter."

I don't think he'll try to plead insanity, but it sure looks like he'd have a case if he did. I'm pretty sure you have to be insane at the time of the crime though, and not after, to plead insanity.

Legal designations of insanity =/= clinical definitions. And the insanity has to be tied to the performance of the act itself. Someone who has, say, aggressive antisocial disorder won't necessarily be found not guilty by insanity if they were charged with aggravated assault. The link has to be established.

I happened to catch him on the View just now. The guy is desperately trying to make it seem like the world is against him and that he is a perfect saint helping to keep taxes low and all. I don't think anyone is buying it though. I can't wait to see how he does on Larry King this evening.

Well, Blagojevich is gone. A unanimous vote (59-0).

I've suspected that he's not insane, as DoK suggests, but, rather, playing the "childhood denial" game. Wherein children, upon being caught with their hand in the cookie jar by their parents, vehemently deny that they were in the cookie jar. Rather than correct the child for violating their rules *and* lying to their face, they concede. Blagojevich is repeating this tactic, with the goal of trying to get the remotest possibility of doubt in peoples' minds. Like we think Bush really thought there were WMDs in Iraq, or that they didn't know they were torturing. We actually can fathom that this is a remote possibility. Well, Bush and his administration got away scot free. So Blagojevich is going that route. Plausible deniability, no matter how absurd, is acceptable in politics. So no matter how wrong you know Bush was, he's no suffering for it. Blagojevich may hopefully face criminal charges, but I would rather put my money in the stock market right now than bet on that happening.
