i love alot of jim carrey movies (man on the moon, the truman show, the majestic, liar liar, eternal sunshine) however alot of people like him for diffrent reasons. the only comedy i liked him in was liar liar (which is at the bottom of the list of movies of his i like) so i thought we could get an intresting discussion (read:flame war) going on this
imo his best movie was eternal sunshine, closley followed by truman.

When I was younger I thought he was very funny in a ridiculous way. Nowadays I can appreciate his more subtle comedy, most evident for me in the Truman Show.

I think Jim Carrey should play more off his strengths and stick to comedy. Even in his more dramatic roles, he relies alot on his talents as comic/comedic actor. Like in Truman, you have to admit his character was more light hearted than dramatic. To me there are some actors that will never make the jump to being a dramatic actor like Tom Hanks did and Jim Carrey is one of those actors.

I really, really enjoyed Truman Show. Easily favorite movie of Carrey's for me, and I'm a big fan. I loved Liar Liar though, and I can't say just yet for Eternal Sunshine but it's coming out in a couple weeks, I literally can't wait, and it will probably be my new favorite movie of his (or tied with truman show) so I can't really say yet.

Also i think Jim lost his comedy touch with ppl after "The Cable Guy" ...One of the worst movies ever lol

Comedy is obviously his strength. His drama isn't bad, but he hasn't wowed me yet. He did a great job in Man on the Moon, but while that was drama, it still had the heart of a comedy. I haven't seene Eternal Sunshine, so that may be something that changes my mind.

cable guy was weird. i hated it...but it was a good hate.
apparently (according to IMDB he's going to be in a remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty...i really hope that gets made...
yes he does rely on comedic aspects in his dramatic roles, but thats what i like. in his comedies hes way too over the top yelling all the time and stuff, its just painful to watch. the truman show didnt have alot of comedy in it, it had alot of positive energy tho.

I loved the Truman show and really, really loved Eternal Sunshine. As a kid, I loved the Ace Ventura's especially the second one. It can still make me laugh. But I feel that he has shown that he is a capable actor, especially with Eternal Sunshine. He deserves an Oscar nod for that. Don't think he should win, but he should get a nomination. I also agree with pimpinc. His comedies haven't been quite as good recently. Bruce Almighty was cute, but there were very few hilarious moments.
Adam Sandler is much the same. His recent comedies have not been able to touch the hilarity of his early works (Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore), but he has shown that he is capable of real acting. I loved Punch Drunk Love.

I like JC's dramatic works, like Eternal Sunshine, Truman Show and the highly underrated Majestic (the last speech he had to give was pretty good). Some of his comedic movies are on and off to be honest. I thought Ace Ventura 2 was pure crap.

The only dramatic film of his I enjoyed was The Truman Show. The others suck, IMO. He should stick to comedy if he wants people to see his movies.

My biggest problem with Jim Carrey in dramatic roles is that he smiles waaaaay too much. I can't take him too seriously because of that.

I never liked jim and I never will. I don't find people acting like idiots funny - not to mention it gets old real quick.

I don't mind Jim Carrey trying out acting in dramatic roles. It's like Michael Jordan and baseball. Yeah, it may be fun for a while, but damnit, you're no good at it. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

I walked out on Dumb and Dumber when it was in the theater...but the movie slowly grew on me after the repeated showings on channels like TBS TNN TNT,

How could you do that?! That's one of his funniest movies. Too bad he's "too good" to star in that kind of movie again. It'd be awesome to see a sequel, and none of that high school bullshit.

Of his movies my favorites are...
Bruce Almighty
Liar Liar
Ace Ventura ( I hated the sequel)
the Truman Show
His other movies (that I have seen) are ok to not worth seeing.

i think that his movies are hit and miss, regardless of the type of role. i like the first ace ventura a lot, i liked the cable guy a decent amount, and the mask is ok for what it is, but after that i never really got into his movies. that is, until eternal sunshine came out. that is a great movie, and i think it's safe to say that it's his best film to date. i'd like to see him in more dramatic roles, but i'm not expecting another eternal sunshine anytime soon.
also, i think he is really obnoxious in interviews.

'The Majestic' was a wretched axe-grinding screenplay that should never have been produced. The historical distortion alone was intensely offensive but typical Hollywood in never admitting they had some serious subversives in their employ back then. Carrey didn't do himself any favors with that turkey. If he wanted to try his hand at drama he should have taken a supporting role in a small movie for scale, giving that film a PR boost and earning any appreciation for that work rather than doing something big and doomed.
Carrey's best roles have been normal guys put in extraordinary situations ala 'The Mask,' 'Liar, Liar,' etc. The characters like Ace Ventura soon become so annoying you truly want the villain to kill them slowly with excruciating pain, just on principle.

I find this man to be one of the most annoying people on the planet. I'm sure he's a nice guy and probably is talented, but my siblings watched his movies over and over so I spent years of family gatherings with my brother apeing the mask or dumb and dumber and the whole family cracking up like it was comic gold. I've never seen his dramtic movies but I probably should. I'm not much of a comedy fan anyways.

I must be the only guy who liked Cable Guy. Thats actually the only comedy I really liked him in, which is sort of weird cause I always hated how overthetop he was in things. That movie just makes me laugh.
Anyway, Eternal Sunshine is definately his best work, and I dont thing he will ever top it. (neither will Kate)

Can't wait for the 29th (?)...
And you're not the only person to like cable guy. I actually liked it, and enjoy watching it. Then again, I am a sucker for anything even sinister in nature, and I love jim carrey. Anyways I liked it too.

Yeah, I love dark comedies, which is probably why I liked it. Election was great too.

I've never even seen it, which is why I can't wait. I'm renting it (possibly buying, not sure yet) the day it comes out. :)
Agreed, I absolutely adore dark comedies. Who was in election? Maybe I should rent that too...

It was another Broderick one. Him and Reese Witherspoon. I think its her best role too, she plays the bratty girl great.

IMO, Man on the Moon is one of the best movies ever. Its just too damn funny. If you can make yourself sit down through the first 30 minutes of it, you'll end up laughing your ass off for the rest of the movie....or at least until you start crying at the end.

Dumb and Dumber and Cable Guy are my all-time favorite Jim Carrey movies. He showed great comedic acting in those and his other funny movies.
But he also showed that he can play serious roles, too in Man on the Moon and the Majestic.
Probably the only Jim Carrey movie that I really don't like is Once Bitten.

I think his injection of a light hearted nature into his serious characters adds a lot to tho, well, character. That and eternal sunshine was a deeply serious movie, and its also one of my faves.

The Cable Guy is very funny as long as you like black comedies and I do.
Death to Smoochy, Heathers, Very Bad Things, Bad Santa, etc.

He has some ok movies, but his comedies would have been better as a skit on In Living Color instead of being dragged out for 90 minutes.
Truman Show was probably his best performance that I saw (did not see Man on the Moon).
