Can anyone who owns this recommend the BD version? I read a couple reviews that said it was almost too good of transfer and it looks too sharp and bright instead of the dark movie (mood wise) it was originally.
Any opinions?

Yeah, I've read the same thing...that it's too bright (especially in outdoor scenes). Allegedly, it changes some of the colors quite a bit too. I've gone back and forth with upgrading my SD set several times, but keep deciding that these are movies I want to look gritty and grainy. I don't really want a different experience when I watch The Godfather.
Sure, I wouldn't mind better clarity, but I think having to compromise those other areas just isn't worth it. Sorry, I know that doesn't really help in terms of a first person account, but I'm in the same boat as you. I'd love to hear someone convince me otherwise.

I watched the dvds dozens of times and I watched the blu rays a couple times. I prefer the blu rays much more.

This is one of the best Blu-ray Discs of 2008. The picture is outstanding and the best this film will ever look, period.

I am in the same boat. Ultimately, I probably will "upgrade" and give my old set to my brother. I'll just wait for the set to come down mightily in price. $30 or so, which'll be a couple of years and I'm ok with that. A good source for screen stills and version comparison that I always use is DVD Beaver.

I plan on picking these movies up eventually, I just don't feel the need to spend $50 right now.

Thanks OP!
This trilogy is one of the few things in my DVD collection that I was looking to upgrade, and I had a $25 Amazon GC sitting around so only $24.99 out of pocket for me.
I'll give the dvd set to my girlfriend (she may have her own copy already) or parents probably.

Thx, OP. I so would like to jump on this, but I'm watching my pennies.
On a side note, doesn't this 4th pic from the Amazon page remind you of Terrance & Phillip?

It should. I think that rebate is packed in with every Blu Ray set.

Any more details on this rebate?

One of the better films I've seen in recent memory and worth the price, certainly with the drop.
