Has anyone applied and gotten a job at EB? Do you know what kind of questions they ask, any helpful hints, etc? I'm seriously considering applying at one and I'd like to know what to expect. Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

if they ask you if you know anything about video games, make sure you say no.

ive never applied there but im POSITIVE thats a question, and if you say yes you wont get hired

(i believe manimal works at eb so you may want to PM him)

Of course not, I'm not expecting much. Its more like a 2nd job, though I'll take as many hours as they want to give me.

You can say you know something about games, but don't give them the impression that it's all you do. They want employees who know how to answer common questions. What they don't want is employees who give the honest truth about product. If you are 'hardcore' in their eyes, then you are more likely to tell a customer if a game really isn't worth purchasing. Every employee I've ever known who had a serious agenda with games would get in trouble for telling a customer when a game sucked. They don't mind you informing the customer, but it's better to offer an alternative than to simply say "it sucks". Tell them games are a hobby, not a lifestyle (even if it is for you). That's the best advice I can give.

Or, walk in a day after half of the staff quits. That's what I did, and I walked out with a job.

Its a new store so I'm not sure whats going on with their staff, they aren't open yet. (I hope whoever is doing the hiring doesn't read this, kinda giving away my location).

I've worked in retail for a year now so I know its your job to sell the product. I'll keep that in mind though, into video games but not TOO into them.

That's good advice Ledhed. I'm been working at EB for 2 years dafoomie. PM me...

Mention to them that you worked in retail for that long, and I guess it's worth working there for hardly any hours and shitty pay when you consider the discounts on used games. If it's 15%, and you got an EB edge card, that's shaq-fuin' 25% off. Nice.

More than likely he won't be able to stack his card with the discount. I know we can't.

/thinks about the fact that he used to get 25% discount
/starts to cry

Your district won't let you combine your employee discount and edge card? That's some bull$hit

I know EB is not exactly a glamorous high paying chick magnet type of job, but its an upgrade from my current job. The discount isn't a big deal to me... I just want the job.

Do they look down at people that have another job already?

I doubt it. What's your other job? How the fuck can EB be better?

I work at the supermarket. Its kinda embarrassing.. I don't even want to mention what I do.

I'm the guy that goes outside and gets the shopping carts and does all the other odd jobs. I think indoors would be an improvement in itself. Job market kinda sucks right now so its the best I could do. Good exercise though.

Now if you WERE looking for good (more like decent pay) and kick ass discount program, Best Buy is pretty good. Last time I worked there, they started thier lower level associates at 7.00 (in Florida) and thier discount program was 5% over cost (rake it in in car stereo stuff).

Just don't apply. It's not fun.

I'd rather do carts than pack fucking groceries into bags. It's not the worst job in the world, but I can see why you'd want to get the EB job now.

Yeah, bagging seems kinda degrading. And people like to berate the cashiers. But this won't be very fun in the snow either.

it would be a pretty cool job, imo.

Don't be embarassed about your job. Work is work, and money is money, plain and simple.

Yeah, everybodys gotta make a living. Its really not that bad aside from being boring, but it will be hard in the snow. Working at EB would be a little more interesting at least.

DON'T DO IT! Find a job elsewhere. For a couple of months, you may like your new job at a game retailer (especially EB and GS). But when the bullshit starts to settle in, you'll want to quit.... Trust me on this one.

Legend has it that working at EB long enough can make someone do crazy things, including putting price stickers in the least desirable places on game cases and not looking at discs when they're being traded in.

Lame joke aside, I really don't have any advice. Good luck!

I had that job in highschool. If your still in highschool, you shouldn't be embarrassed with any job you have. Its only embarrassing if your doing it when your 30.

As long as you're getting paid a decent amount and you're enjoying it, go right ahead. Good luck.

I second that. It pains me to see the terrible misconception that "Working in a Gamestore will be cool!" It took me a while to realize it, but working around something you enjoy is the fastest and almost guaranteed way to ruin it for you.

When I was in high school I worked the counter at a dry cleaner's for 2 years and then I worked summer after HS at a convenience store. A job's a job, as long as it's not food service.

it is better than no job. i just started working at a gamestop and my manager is awesome. he actually wants us to tell which game is better, etc. it all depends on how your manager acts for the most part.

I'm not thinking that its "cool" to work there going into this. Its not like I haven't had other jobs, and I've put up with a good amount of BS in each of them. Work is work wherever you go, its not going to be fun and games, especially for that little money. But I'd rather do this than a lot of other things I can think of, and its probably a little better than what I do now. Certainly less boring and less manual labor in any case.

i've worked for eb for about 3 1/2 years, in the boston area, as a matter of fact, it's not as bad as advertised. just to warn you though, the pay does suck and the customer base knows they know more than you, it's actually like an internet message board, but with parents (j/k, well, not really). i actually had a kid screaming at me a couple of weeks ago because he was absolutly certain that metroid: zero mission was a remake of super metroid and not the first one.

knowledge of video games will hurt or help you depending on the particular store, all the managers i have had have encouraged knowing the product, but there is one manager in my district who has a strict policy of not hiring gamers because "they want people to buy games that are good and not the games we need to sell." (people like him re-enforce the gamestore stereotype)

if you can get into a store where the people are cool, you'll be fine, but if you get into a store full of asshats/overeager salespeople, you'll hate the company.

I know the pay sucks, yeah... I do have to deal with customers that -know- they're right when they're not. Thanks for the advice, but it'll all be moot anyway if I don't even get the job.

Discount!!???!!!? This means that lady at Best Buy lied to me!! Told me that there are no discount's as an employee!

Wish I could help you out. Just got it as a 2nd job over there and I never went through an interview. Everyone seemed nice so far.
