How hard is it to get into this game? I have been debating picking it up for awhile but am really intimidated. I like a lot of FPSers and do pretty well sitting around with me and my buddies playing gears or halo but the second I go online I tend to get tossed around pretty badly....so I never play online. Playing a PC FPSer makes it doubly intimidating.

TF2 is very easy to play. It's hard to be good at, but so are most games. Just play an engineer and stay out of the way, or play a heavy with a medic stuck on your ass. If you find a server too competitive, just join another.

I don't think I've ever seen a server marked specifically as noob, but just try any one of them. If you don't like it, try another.
As for the achievements, Sporadic keeps mentioning some kind of unlocker, but I don't know how much I'd trust it.

I've found the TF2 community to be pretty noob-friendly in general (more helping you out than yelling at you). But like Kayden said, if you don't like the server, just go to another one. I'm really new to PC FPS, but I've found TF2 to be a good way to get into it.

for newbs, i think medics are the best - you instantly help out, you get to be in the action and get to know the maps (90% of being good at TF2), and learn how team dynamics work (do not pop your uber cherry early!)

I spent some time playing Fortress Forever. I think it's pretty much exactly was TF2 was originally going to be. I don't like it as much as the real thing, but that's probably because it's missing Valves polish. It feels almost exactly like TFC with updated textures and a few tweaks. Best of all, IT HAS GRENADES!

It's pretty simple.
TF2 was my first real FPS that I really played with a keyboard and mouse. I just dived into the deep end and after I got a handle on the controls/learned the maps/player behavor, I would consider myself a good player.
The real key is to find a good server. I started on 2fort2furious, a goon ran server, that not only has a ton of great players but is kind of not that serious and runs a ton of custom maps. Now I play on a normal basic server that is almost always full at night.

You really don't need to be with people to fully enjoy the game. At worst, you can join a clan server, talk on the mic and get to know people. Once you are considered a regular, it's fine. Very easy to meet and talk with people.
There's a few CAGs that have played in the same server, but I don't think anyone has actually organized an actual CAG gamenight or anything. It may be an issue with regional servers, and not actually having a server of our own, but feel free to join that CAG Steam group and invite people to whatever server you're playing in.

yes, i would like to know this as well. i think it'd be a lot of fun to have a CAG TF2 night or something. i'm tired of playing with a bunch of randoms. it'd be nice to be able to play with a lot of people regularly so i could get the hang of how people play.

Actually, we had this before. Back when TF2 launched. I was the leader of it, however that failed miserably and I don't like to talk about it much. :lol:

Well, basically, my internet was total shit and it made it extremely hard for me to play at the time. Because of this, I just lost interest in playing the game. Others did step-up and try to lead it, however they were busy and things just didn't go well.
We actually pitched in and purchased a server for a month, but it was tough to get it set-up correctly, and we had a hard time getting people on it.
If another person wanted to try this, that is cool and I would try and play regularly, but I am certainly not going to lead anything.

That sounds like a decent idea as long as it will hold enough players to make this fun. :)

You need to stay significantly back as a first measure. You also need to TURN AROUND. The Medigun beam doesn't turn off when you look away. Lastly, if you're going to be in a particular area for a little bit, it's especially important to watch for spies. You can get pretty good with the Ubersaw versus Spies.

My internet has kinda been slow today, so I didn't even bother rejoining.
I did unlock the sandman today though. It is alright, I think I would prefer to have my double jump though...

the new spy update has completely changed the way that class is played.
i like it, but i miss being a ninja spy :D

Ability to equip non-primary weapons as your disguise and a massive change to backstabs. The backstab animation only plays while you're on the ground from behind and plays out almost instantly. This means you cannot stair-stab or leap off things to get back stabs.

I don't think now is a great time to play spy with the opposing team having 3+ scouts than usual. I keep bumping into them, which is no fun. I do like the option you have of equipping whatever weapon you want, but it kinda keeps me distracted from what I'm supposed to do. Meh.

Playing last night was fucking horrible. Everyone on my team was a scout except for CK and myself. Our team was a massive joke. We'd pretty much get our heads caved in for 10 minutes trying to cap their points and lose. Then they'd turn around and cap all our shit inside of a minute. Not fun. =\

It was actually pretty fun to grind achievements on an achievement server for this update.
Watching an army of scouts trying to kill a jumping Heavy yelling "Communism will NOT allow you to take my sandvich!" was a great time.

With all the scouts around i decided to get the last 2 updates for my heavy. I finished getting "don't touch sandvich!" where you have to kill 50 scouts with natasha, and as you can imagine, that did not take very long.

nice video! as expected, the triple jump could be very useful. i'd watch out for snipers tho. when your flying through the air for a second or two, that's all the time a decent sniper needs to pick you off.

The sudden third-person view is the worst part. It's like being momentarily transported into an MMO.
And there's no reason it should counter ubers. The best uber counter is an active defense that prevents the enemy from building and coordinating ubers in the first place.
Valve will fix it, just like they fixed the stupid +50 HP on the backburner.

I am new to PC gaming and i have an older computer so i need help updating.
I keep getting an error message when i try to launch TF2 that says
"Unsuported Video Card
Your video hardware does not meet the minimum requirements that we have set for the game. If you choose to continue and run the game anyway, you could have problems with stability or performance in the game."
When i click the "continue anyway" button the game loads and i get the Valve and Source screens. Then i get to the loading screen with The Medic, Spy and Heavy. It stays on that screen for a while then my computer either restarts or I get a error message that says
"Your graphics hardware must support at least pixel shader 1.1 to run this game"
Is there anything i can do?

I would rather the Sandman push back ubers like an Airblast, with differing strengths of push depending on the distance. You'd think anything invincible in a video game would at least be able to get pushed back, not stunned in place (unless it was a MASSIVE hit, but this is just a baseball).

I am new to PC gaming and i have an older computer so i need help updating.
I keep getting an error message when i try to launch TF2 that says
"Unsuported Video Card
Your video hardware does not meet the minimum requirements that we have set for the game. If you choose to continue and run the game anyway, you could have problems with stability or performance in the game."
When i click the "continue anyway" button the game loads and i get the Valve and Source screens. Then i get to the loading screen with The Medic, Spy and Heavy. It stays on that screen for a while then my computer either restarts or I get a error message that says

Is there anything i can do?

So I played my first game of Arena ever today. Wow I got raped. Granted, the whole "scouts everywhere" thing kind of changes the aspects of arena.
Also unlocked natascha with the heavy today. I feel like I can 1-2 more kills each round using that instead of sasha. again, maybe its just all the scouts.

Yeah that's most likely your only option. If you have a PCI Express slot Newegg has 9600 GSOs for $70-100. I only have an 8800 GTS and my machine runs TF2 perfectly, so you should have no trouble at all running TF2 with a 9600.

You could put -gl in your launch settings. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm sure someone could elaborate on what OpenGL does and if I'm making any sense.

Dude... your card is at LEAST 8 years old then. Which probably means all the other parts are that old too. You just need a computer.

I made a new spray out of a jpg. Have the .vmt and .vtf in both materials\VGUI and materials\VGUI\logos. Go in game, go to options, import the sprays. They show up there fine.
Go play either a server I make myself, or join one, hit t, and see nothing.
Ideas?

If you've got CS:S or DOD:S, load up the spray in there and then find the file it got turned in to. For some reason TF2 hates sprays.
Or you could go to FPSBanana.com and get a spray there.

Speaking of, Scout's are a bit of a pain in the ass. Especially when a good chunk of them require the unlockables (I need achievements to get the unlockables...but a lot of the achievements require the unlockable items...quite the conundrum). Medic's is just insane on some parts.

This is why I really wish they just unlocked them with a patch. I mean nearly everyone who wants the weapons (and who wouldn't) goes about it in a manner valve does not intend (be it achievement servers or other means). You'd think they'd have realized this after releasing the packs for medic, heavy, pyro.

Thing is, when you play Medic it actually helps the team. When you play Scout, you probably won't be doing as good as you would with a different class. That might just be only me, but still.
All I want to say is these achievements will take awhile for me, just like how the Heavy achievements are hard for me. =p

Fucking annoying.
At game start, you can't move for 5 minutes. You can shoot your feet and jump, but you can't move.
Game also gets stuck at Waiting for players.
Since Valve has zero support or instructions, I'm going to say fuck it unless one of you wants to look into it. I don't have the patience for this half assed shit.

They need a way to be able to list the server's settings, like what their ping limit is. I hate joining a server, dominating it, and then get that lag spike and bam, kicked.

It's not easy for them to detect things like that because that's a sourcemod. I do agree though, they ought to add an option to "See all mods" when you right click a server, effected gravity, hlstatsx, etc.

I think it's still too powerful, the stun time to distance ratio is nuts. I got hit (On 2Fort) from the middle of my battlements (The mini-house in the middle) to the doorway to getting out to the battlements and had a ~3-4 second stun. It really needs to be 3-4 from battlement to battlement or something.

I think Egypt needs some tweaks. Stage 1, a good offense can get pass this if Red decides to stack on engys/have little-to-no medics. Maybe, 1/6 times a team gets pass this stage. Stage 2 is almost impossible if you build on that arch near the second point. 1/10 times a team gets pass this stage. Then the third stage somehow is the easiest out of all of them. wtfbutter.
Junction just gets boring after the first time you play it.

In the past this was available only as a console command and it greatly increased performance for a lot of people but also added a lot of instability. I hope this official release makes it completely usable. Should notice a big FPS bump during firefights.

I'm not going to even bother with multicore, in Left 4 Dead I had to turn it off because the game would freeze for 2-3 seconds every minute or so with multicore on but ran just fine with it off.

I don't notice any difference with it enabled. Frame rate with a zoomed sniper still dips for me. When I play sniper on my brother's computer, it's soooo easy. On this computer, if there's a pyro using his flamethrower or medic healing, my fps lowers... haha.

I want a gun that never has to charge for crits.
Penalty being either, if you miss, you lose either all or a large portion of your life.
Or, its like an experimental sniper rifle, unstable etc., if you get shot while zoomed in (by anything, pistol included), it blows up in your face and kills you.
Another idea that would be awesome imo, is the ability to take a much stronger version of his secondary weapon (assault rifle or something) and in return you cannot snipe. The sniper's machine gun has always been my favorite weapon, but its just so damn weak.

Crystal: that would be a terrible idea. It will make snipers play like awpers in CS. Which is fine, except the game has heavy emphasize on teamwork. Snipers in TF2 should stay support. They were broken as fuck back when they could quickscope. A decent sniper could even take out a team of scouts closerange.

Not even 2. Grenades are the bane of FPS. Look at the smoke grenades in Gears or nade launchers and nade spamming in CoD4? They ruin games.

If you watch some of the early TF2 videos you'll see the game did originally have grenades but they took them out. In the early videos the demoman had a grenade that was several sticks of dynamite tied together.
I'm not sure how I feel about adding grenades in TF2. I like the (relative) lack of grenade spam in TF2 since only one class can do it, though I have faith that if Valve did implement grenades they would do it in a way to prevent constant grenade spam.

Valve's already done a 180 when it comes to not revoking control from the player (Sandman) and making sure all weapons are easily visible from a distance (poor unlock models).

While many of the unlockable weapons do look the same as their counterparts, for the most part the differences between the two weapons aren't huge, they just modify the base weapon in some way. The new stuff like the flair gun is still easily identifiable from a distance.

Yeah I have to agree that your descriptions of changing the weapons seems like a good idea.
Robin Walker did an interview recently, it seems like the hats are purely cosmetic right now and the backpack is pretty much just so you can pick up the class update weapons without having to unlock achievements, which is great because I hate having to unlock the achievements to get the weapons:

I have to make a machinima project for my film class and I'm having a tough time finding a server that has VAC disabled. The reason I need a disabled VAC server is because I need to film it without the hud on but Valve classified that as a cheat a while ago. If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it.

They should just put a small scoreboard by the train tracks with the number of kills the train has gotten that level. Sort of like the scoreboard for the ghosts on the Pacman level.

I figured it'd be a projectile like the crossbow in HL2, do ~100 damage with no charge or headshots. Harder to land a hit but more combat close to mid range oriented.

Ha! Yes! I KNEW they would let you pin corpses to walls. And the Jar of Pee or a Boomerang sounds feasible (but moreso the boomerang).
I'm still wondering what the secondary is going to be. Maybe a pistol of some kind? Or another rapid-fire weapon? Or some kind of boost like the scout's energy drink or the heavy's sandvich? I guess we'll see later this week!

After 150+ hours of playing this game, I think I'm done with this game.
It's getting boring (and I know it's called Team Fortress) but I'm sick of getting steamrolled when placed with a super suck team. Put the best player against a good team and there is no chance. Play demo and destroy the other teams goods? Get raped by spies when your retarded teammates can't spycheck worth a damn. Play engi? Same thing except your entrance tele will get sapped the second you leave it. Play pyro and spycheck? The other team builds up a ton of teles/sentries/dispensers and your team can't move forward or move just enough to get slaughtered.

I find this to be a fair tradeoff. It only takes 3 or so close range revolvers to kill you anyways and without your precious SMG it'll be hard to kill the spy anyway (Unless you are good at the scopelesses.)
EDIT: Woah, apparently Valve put up a picture of a spy uncloaking for a few minutes before taking it down. Normally I would think someone shooped it but people are saying they saw it.

I love it! Getting backstabbed is one of the most frustrating deaths in TF2 and i'm more than happy to get a bit of help in preventing that. It'll depend on the server though. I'm not going to give up the machine gun if there aren't any good spies.

I'm pretty sure Valve has a thing about always having a melee weapon, lest you be screwed if you ran out of ammo. I think it's safe to assume it's the SMG.

Well I think its more of a deterrent, you don't know which snipers have the shield and which don't, so attacking a sniper becomes a guessing game.
Unless of course the shield is visible in which case it's the stupidest update ever.

Maybe the tribal shield will be invisible unless selected like other weapons. That seems to be the only way to do it if they want don't want spies to just shoot the snipers who are wearing them.

Maybe when you have the cloak and dagger equipped backstabs aren't instant kills? Or maybe you have to stab people directly in the back to kill them, you can't stab them in the side like with the normal knife?

Only negative that the ad mentions is that you can only refill your meter by standing still. You can't pick up metal anymore.
