This might be more pathetic than the people whining, actually.
Stop reading their posts.
"Problem" solved.
Oh but it doesn't stop there. In game, IRC, steam friends messages, it goes on and on and on.

there's also something satisfying about the faded halo that floats there after you've fragged someone.

By the way, does the halo affect Spy cloak and disguise?
Tsukento

Yes. Currently it makes it easy to see cloaked and disguised Spies wearing a Halo. :\
Caught on to this yesterday when I kept getting easily spotted until someone from the other team kindly pointed out to me that they could see a floating halo whenever I cloaked.

The whole halo thing is quite a hilarious experiment. Basically what you have here is a bunch of mega-OCD players. They've got to have every unlockable in a game, rare or not, and they've got to have it RIGHT NOW. Hell, I know lots of people jump into achievement servers right after a class update to get all the new unlocks but never actually play the game until the next class update where they do it all over again.
Anyways, back to halos. The best part about all this is that Valve is keeping a precious item away from the OCD players. It doesn't matter what it is, they must have it, but they can't. Valve could make the next hat update a series of penis hats, literal dickheads if you will, and these guys would have to collect every one.
Great stuff.

The whole TF2 Steam forum is nothing but about the idler.
I just dealt with some moron who wanted to endorse a Valve-approved idler.
They couldn't accept there already was one. It was simply TF2 running all night. He argued that the idler would let him continue work on his computer because it didn't eat up processing.
Really? Is that what they're asking for?

Pyro is love.
Whoa, haven't seen a pyro played like that.
Hydro2Oxide
09-04-2009, 11:24 PM
While B||oodsire is a good pyro, the editing on that video is terrible. He really ought to have taken the time to make a good video or had someone do it. Also, I hate to belittle it so much but most those players are very bad.
Other than that though, I love that video. Always fun to watch.
Tsukento
09-05-2009, 04:49 AM
Second video has one flaw: He didn't put out his teammates at the 13 second mark.
Nothing more aggravating than a Pyro who uses a Flamethrower that won't put out his team if they're on fire.
...Okay, it's just as aggravating as a Medic that only overheals one god damned person in the team, no matter how many times you spam "MEDIC!" Especially when said overhealed person is constantly getting Sniped, blown up or Back Stabbed.
As for the whole Halo situation, both sides are acting retarded. You have the idlers who feel they're entitled to their weapons/hats, as well as feeling asspained for being called cheaters, as well as hating people for wearing Halos. Then you have the people rubbing it in that they didn't use an idling program and what not.
For starters, regardless if it has an effect on how you play or not, Valve's ToS for TF2 say they have the right to do what they please with your account if you're caught using ANY kind of 3rd party program that isn't supported by them. People are not getting the fact that Valve isn't punishing for idling; they punished people using a 3rd party program that is against the ToS.
Next, why the butthurt over the items being removed? It's not like they can't be accessed at all again. Hats have always been RANDOM drops, so there's no effort needed to get them. And weapons are easily obtainable via playing for a good while and achievements. Valve only removed the obtained items, nothing more. They COULD have deleted and banned accounts, yet people go batshit crazy over item removal.
Then you have people refusing to play with other players properly should one have a Halo. It's a free hat. Some people may have absolutely no hats other than the Halo and want to wear it. Don't be a douchebag by not healing or helping your team mate if they're in trouble while wearing a Halo. There's no reason to hold a grudge against people who opted not to use an idler. I can understand if it's someone being a dick, but not if it's solely because of the Halo.
Now, if the person IS being a dick...by all means, don't heal them or put them out if they're on fire. :) Griefing assholes is always fun.

I've found a good solution to all the douchebaggery of those who will only heal others with/without halos is to play Medic yourself and be an indiscriminate healer. Not the best if you don't want to heal the whole round, but far better than getting steamrolled because your team is stubborn with their heals.

I don't really see the fuss about idling programs or having X amount of items or even having the halo. The halo is ugly on my soldier so I don't wear it anymore. I've gotten all my items already thru the random drop system, I have 3 hats but they're for classes that I don't play. I play better without a pocket medic because I only have to protect myself. I don't engage in conversation while playing either.
Come to think of it I'm quite a terrible teamplayer haha.

09-05-2009, 08:53 PM
I agree with you, the halo is just plain ugly, especially on soldiers (my favorite class).
I didn't get a halo 'cause I used the idler overnight once or twice. Compared to the time I actually spent playing the game it was nothing, but either way I don't really care. And yes, the hats are stupid and purely cosmetic and they don't do anything, but with the amount of time I've spent playing this game it's insane that I don't have one.

Really the best thing for Valve to do at this point is let you turn your duplicate weapons into hats. Maybe something like 5-10 items for a class can turn into a random hat for that class.
They should give everyone a random Halloween mask for Halloween. 8-)

This plan would still lead to lots of complaints from people since they will have deleted a lot of duplicate items while waiting for the trade system to be implemented. Since this is Valve (and they are not the quickest developers around), I do not really expect to see the trade system implemented this year or it might be like their Christmas gift to the players. I kind of gave up on the hats since they are so hard to get and adding even more has not made this batch or the previous ones any easier to get.

Just a note, most the beta testers have stressed that the Blut and Ubersaw don't need to be downgraded, but that Syringe and Bonesaw need upgrades. It's unlikely those 2 will see the light of day.

Update released. Pretty interesting...
http://store.steampowered.com/news/2825/
Engine
If the installation is an HLTV relay we allow clients to connect as HLTV clients even if tv_enable is set to false. A recent exploit fix made it such that we ignore the flag indicating that the client is an HLTV client if tv_enable is false, but it is possible that relays won't have this ConVar set
Additions / Changes
Backpack improvement
Added support for 100 slots in the backpack
Backpack can now be sorted by type
Multi-selection in the backpack is now done by holding down the Ctrl key
Alt-fire on the Sandvich now drops sandviches
A single sandvich can be dropped at a time. Dropping the sandvich removes it from the Heavy
A Heavy can regain his sandvich by collecting a healthkit while already being at full health
Eating a sandvich using the taunt method now heals a Heavy to full health
Dropped sandviches heal 50% of the collector's health
Medic regen changes
Base regen amount increased from 1/sec to 3/sec
Regen amount increase since time of last damage decreased from 3x to 2x
End result of above: Old healing scaled from 1/sec to 3/sec based on time since being damaged (maxed out at 10 seconds). New healing scales from 3/sec to 6/sec
Blutsauger
Replaced "No critical hits" negative attribute with "-2 health drained per second on wearer"
Health drain stacks on top of the above Medic regen changes, lowering the base regen by 2h/sec
Added "mp_windifference" server ConVar (default to 0)
When set to X, matches will be considered won if a team gets X points ahead of the other team
Added a "Remember the active weapon between lives" option to the Multiplayer->Advanced options dialog
Added "Disable weather effects" option to the Multiplayer->Advanced options dialog
Added "Show non-standard items on spectated player" option to the Multiplayer->Advanced options dialog
If set (default), it'll show non-standard items being carried by the player you're spectating
Tournament mode changes
New item whitelist allowing tournaments to control what items can be used by players
Added "item_whitelist_example.txt"
Added "item_show_whitelistable_definitions" command to get a list of whitelistable items
Added Tournament mode Spectator HUD
Added "Use advanced spectator HUD in tournament mode" option to the Multiplayer->Advanced options dialog
Shows all the members of your team (or both if you're a spectator) at the top of the screen, along with class/health/respawn time/charge level
Spectator indices are now shown on the team members, and hitting the corresponding weapon selection key (slot1-slot12 commands) will spectate them
Changed idle player check to include spectators & players who haven't chosen a team
Bug Fixes
Fixed explosive radius detection using an axially aligned box instead of a sphere
Compensated by increasing the radius of grenades, pipes, and rockets to 50% of what they lost at the corners of the OBB
Grenades/Pipes radius change: 132->159
Rocket radius change: 121->146
End result of above: Explosives have had their radius reduced at some angles, and increased at others. Radius is now consistent, angles are now irrelevant
Fixed Sniper using the reference pose if he has the Huntsman deployed when his team loses
Fixed Spies speaking their response rules lines after killing a player as the class they were disguised as
Fixed Medics getting MedicCallerPanels in their HUD for cloaked enemy Spies disguised as their team
Fixed the Huntsman not firing crit arrows when the Sniper is being CritBoosted
Fixed being able to fire the Huntsman under water if you jump into the water with the arrow charged
Added check to prevent clients using the "firstperson" command to get out of thirdperson view while they're phasing, taunting or control stunned
Fixed Halo glow effect not being hidden for cloak/disguised enemy Spies
Fixed wearables not destroying their attached particles when they're removed
Fixed several player & viewmodel simulation issues that occurred when the game was paused
Fixed a DX8-based exploit that allowed modified particle effects to work under sv_pure 2
Community Requests
Added the entindex() of the object being built to the "player_builtobject" game event
Added flag to allow CTF map authors to turn off the Overtime mode when timers expire
Added IgnitePlayer input to TFPlayer

Medic changes are interesting. I guess I'll be switching back to the syringe gun, as I don't think the blutsauger was that much more helpful. Hopefully this means less burning to death on top of a health pack.
Are they adding a lot more hats or something? 100 slots seems like a lot. It's nice that Heavy can share his sandvich now.
They are probably adding the extra slots since most of the testers had full backpacks and could not test a lot of new items without deleting stuff and they need to make sure to have room for the other class unlockables that are still needed.
Great, so the Blutsauger, what was already one of the more OP guns in the game, gets crits. Ugh.

Previously, if you had every hat and every unlock, you wouldn't have enough space in your bag for it all. Although such an occurrence is statistically improbably, it could still happen. Plus, the added inventory space will allow us to accrue weapons and such for whenever their trading/crafting system actually goes live.
Overpowered. So you're saying medics were running around ruling the game with their bluts?
Yeah.
When you cant kill them because their gun gives them health, yet they can kill you pretty fast, its ridiculous. Now they have crits too, which only makes it worse.

I play just fine. I'm generally always in the top three on any given team. The Blutsauger is just an OP gun. Its not like there is some epidemic with everyone using it, but when you do encounter a medic that uses it, its a total pain in the ass to kill them with basically anything that isn't the flamethrower.

Bluts users only really gain just the benefit of being able to Crit since the negative aspect interacts with Medic regen, causing it to act like the regen rate of before the update. That's all, really. Medics with Syringe Gun get a better regen rate and can crit.
Only difference is that Bluts will heal if you actually shoot and hit anyone.
But either way, if you're getting owned by a Medic, you're clearly failing hard...unless it's by surprise Ubersaw.

You need to dominate someone who has the hat equipped, and then you need to collect 20 pumpkins from the event map. There are a few more achievements but they don't seem to give you anything.

If you're having performance problems, try playing on 24-person servers. Valve once said something about how performance falls off a ledge once you get more than 24 people playing (i.e. the game wasn't designed for more than that).

Maybe we'll get some sort of global competition between soldier and demo, with the winner getting the next update. Doubtful, but it'd be cool.
Edit: Maybe a competition for destroying the most engineer buildings, and then Valve swerves us all and pushes out the engi update.

If you want to talk about skewing the results towards a side using as little skill as possible, the easiest way has to be to just pick a side you want to win, join the other side, and die as many times as possible.

I contributed 106 soldier deaths today as demoman. Soldier is still my fav. class of the 2; only reason I'm siding with demoman is because not enough people can play a decent demoman so I think those that stick with demoman as their main class should be rewarded.

I don't know about playing spy... With all the nades, stickys, rockets, all over the place, even cloaking won't help you. But if it's a big map then yeah.. But the soldier needs a new weapon more than demo. It can get extremely boring play soldier with no unique weapon but a rocket launcher. The shotgun isn't unique because lots of other classes have it. And the shovel just sucks. Demo on the otherhand has a nice grenade launcher and a sticky... launcher. So I'm happy soldier is winning. I'm fighting for him in the war :D

Yet More Updates!
The first two Demo Weapons revealed - http://www.teamfortress.com/demomanupdate/index.htm#item_1
The Comic Continues - http://www.teamfortress.com/war/demo/
For those too lazy to click, the first weapon is a Claymore to replace his Bottle. A killing blow grants decapitation...a decapitation grants you more health and more speed...however, you start out with initially lower health and cannot crit, unless used in conjunction with his next weapon...
Replacing the Sticky Launcher is a Shield. Equipping it provides significant Blast Damange and Fire resistance. Alt-firing allows you to charge forth, moving "faster than a scout can manage". Swinging your claymore during a medium charge grants a mini-crit, and a large-crit to a long charge.

Salamando3000
12-17-2009, 03:45 AM
Yeah, It's been updated. Here's a complete rundown of all weapons announced thus far...
---Soldier---
the Direct Hit - Nobody can deny that, measured solely by their ability to blow people into chunky clouds of tomato soup, rockets are an incredible force for good in the world. But with their wide blast radius, they are not a particularly terrific weapon for showing off your sharpshooting skills.
Until now. A high precision version of the standard-issue rocket launcher, the Direct Hit has been engineered from the ground up for Soldiers who have mastered the art of shooting at their targets instead of vaguely near them. Those of you looking to deal splash damage, stop reading now: the Direct Hit has a 70% smaller blast radius than a traditional rocket launcher. But the rockets that come out of this thing move fast and hit hard: 80% faster and with 25% more destructive force. Best of all, for you real sharpshooters, the Direct Hit guarantees mini-crits on airborne targets.
the Equalizer - Back when your father and grandfather played Team Fortress 2, being bad at the game was so shameful, they would rage-quit (a lengthy, painful process that involved pulling burning coal from the computer’s furnace). Now, thanks to modern-day updates like these, there’s finally a good excuse. You didn’t misread that sentence: losing is now a strategy.
This melee-slot pickaxe becomes more deadly the more damage you take, letting you move faster and hit harder the more wounds you endure. Get close enough to death, and you will become Death himself.
the Buff Banner - Admit it: Every so often, you suspect you’re carrying your team. But other than rage-quitting, what can you do about it? How about motivating those lazy sons of bitches to put on their war face and fight?
Enter the morale-boosting Buff Banner. When this secondary-slot item is equipped, any damage you deal boosts a rage meter that, when full, lets you pull out your bugle and sound a call to war! For the next 14 seconds, every teammate who rallies round your flag will deal mini-crits.
---Demoman---
the Eyelander - The Eyelander holds to a principle all one-eyed Scotsmen with no depth perception have known for years: you don’t kill a man by mucking about with rifles, arrows, rocks, or other long-distance rubbish. You kill him by grabbing the biggest bloody sword you can find, running up nice and close to him, and chopping the dumb bastard’s head off.
Made with pattern-welded Damascus steel, this melee-slot weapon offers a guaranteed decapitation with every killing blow. Unfortunately, because it's haunted, it will suck away some of your soul: expect a decrease in your max health at the outset. However, once the blade feeds on neck, you’ll receive a boost in max health and speed. With each new protesting head you cleave (up to four), you’ll get healthier and faster.
The Eyelander will not deal critical hits unless used in conjunction with the Chargin’ Targe’s charge ability.
the Chargin' Targe - The Chargin’ Targe solves a centuries-old Scottish riddle, which is that shields exist. True, the shield might block the occasional sword blow. However, they are essentially weapons to be used for hiding behind, and this is a concept the average Scotsman does not understand. “If I were to pick up this cowering-plate, I would have to put down my second sword,” a Scotsman thinks. “And surely that is madness.” The Chargin’ Targe solves this riddle by turning the useless shield into a deadly weapon you can run at people with and then bludgeon to death.
The targe replaces your tried-and-true sticky bomb launcher, but offers some unique capabilities in return, especially when used with the Eyelander. Just equipping the Chargin’ Targe provides automatic +50% fire damage resistance and +65% blast damage resistance. But the Chargin’ Targe’s main perk lies in its name. Alt-firing will hurtle you toward an enemy at a punishingly damaging high speed (far faster than a Scout can manage).
Charging also boosts the lethality of your melee weapon. Land a melee hit during a medium length charge and you'll be guaranteed a mini-crit. Land a hit during a long distance charge, and your victim will receive devastating full crit damage.
the Scottish Resistance - Get your thinking pants on, because the Scottish Resistance is the thinking Demoman's sticky bomb launcher. Trading offensive capability for increased defensive power, the SR can lay down twice as many sticky bombs, as well as destroy enemy sticky bombs.
But hold on, thinking fans—there’s more! The SR lets you detonate specific groups of bombs instead of having to set them off all at once. The SR detonates whichever group of bombs the player is looking at, letting you control which clusters blow, and when. You’ll be able to lay more traps and guard multiple areas at a time.
But all this awesome thinking man stuff comes at a price, just like real thinking. The SR is less useful for air-bursts and close range combat, thanks to longer priming rate (0.4 seconds) per bomb.
And the kill counter for each is getting dangerously close. What're the odds of a tie and both/neither getting the fourth unlock?

Grenade probably has something to do with a taunt kill.
The Soldier's bugle should prove extremely useful on A/D maps when BLU needs that extra push. Now combine the bugle buff with a sniper who jarates the cap point before the charge and you have some serious ownage.

The new sticky launcher looks to have major potential. Double the number of stickys (16)? Imagine how much of a push an uber'd demo could do with that much boom. Interestingly enough, since it also kills other Demo's stickys, the best counter for a SR Demo push is another SR Demo.

I really like unlocks like the Kritz and Buff Banner that promote teamwork. Stuff like the Sandman, Eyelander, Equalizer, etc. I find completely retarded and contrary to the spirit of the original TF2. Ha, I actually almost enjoyed the spam on release night. I usually despise the week or two after an update is released, but for some reason, I had a lot of fun. I think it was because it reminded me so much of UT/Quake 3 Rocket Arena, I found myself laughing more than cursing when I died. Plus all the new weapons, death animations (I had my head chopped off and I watched my own body spurt blood out of its neck), new maps (I REALLY like cp_gorge), getting lots of unlocks (I haven't played in over 6 months so it was really nice getting almost everything in one evening) and playing as a heavy or medic was a lot of fun that night (I was able to mow down 5-6 soldiers/demomen on a CP on gorge because a soldier used his banner at the right time, AWESOME.)
In short, I haven't had this much fun with TF2 since it was first released. But I'm just a noob who only plays every now and then, what do I know? Whatever, it's fun and that's all I care about.

@Cher, do you have multicore processing on? Also, monitor your resources when you run the game. What is your CPU idling at? What's it at in the game?

I sware TF2 hates me. Every day since they changed the item update rules I been playing so I could get 1 item a day which would be around 40 mins - 1 hr on a good day.
Anyway the only new item I got was the heavy's chocolate bar (and that was after I smelted one). I keep getting items I already own and not even a single hat.
Hate to sound like an item whore, but is it possible for the drop system to get bugged? I've played this entire past weekend, probably a total of 12-15 hours or so, and haven't found a single item.

Anything is possible with the item system. With the previous change of giving out items based on playtime, from what I've read around the system resets your playtime counter every thursday(night?). I can sorta confirm it as last week I got 3 items playing Friday for a few hours, and the Wednesday prior I was getting nothing. Any who, regarding the item system bugging, anyone remember when they released one of the major updates and people were given items like every 5 minutes? A lot of them being camera beards? There's your example of the system getting bugged.

I crafted everything I possibly could in my inventory, along with two crappy hats (Batters Helmet and the Soldiers Stash) and I didn't get a wrench. Now I'm left with a bunch of metal and Ze Goggles.

Soldiers Stash is so lame. It's the regular Soldier hat with cigarettes and a playing card on it.
After crafting those two together, my hat inventory now includes the Tyrants Helm, the Heavy Duty Rag, Ze Goggles, Bills Hat, the Ghostly Gibus, and the Cheaters Lament.

Crafting is the act of creating in-game weapons, hats, or other mats, usually starting with a handful of weapons. Here's a list of all known recipes.
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Crafting
Hats are found in one of two ways...1) Extremely rare drop through the item drop system, or 2) through Crafting. One random hat requires 3 Refined Metal/9 Reclaimed Metal/27 Scrap Metal/54 Weapons.
Just got done playing. My friend and I were crafting stuff like crazy. We didnt get anything. Someone did find a golden wrench though while we were playing. I also crafted together my Heavy Duty Rag and Ze Goggles (doin' it all for the wrench man) and got the Hound Dog out of it, which is awesome. My friend crafted together his Footbal Helmet and Modest Pile of Hats to get the Officers Ushanka.
Tomorrow we continue our quest for the golden wrench.

Argh, I played too much over the weekend. I think I reach my drop limit for the week, as I played several hours today and didn't get a single item. I already crafted all my repeat items over the weekend before this Golden Wrench business. Bleh.

I did a test a few weeks ago. In the weeks allotted time, I was able to find eight items before I reached the limit on drops. Not that it's the same every time, but I figure 8-10 drops a week is about the max.

I don't think I've played the engineer for even 30 minutes. Whenever I did, I just felt like I wasn't playing him correctly and wasn't being very helpful to my team.
These new weapons look pretty sweet though! Crits for every kill/assist your sentry gets? And taking control of a sentry that gets doubled fire rate and more missiles at level 3 (but where does the engineer go when he's in control? Are people going to need to find a safe spot to hide?)? I think I'll have to try and become useful with the engineer so I get a chance to use these weapons effectively.
And a new payload map! Woot! "Blow it up to be safe."
Also, I found a hidden link on the bottom left corner of the Frontier Justice blueprint: Link (http://www.teamfortress.com/engineerupdate/wrangdigan/). Nothing special, just a drawing of a dude holding the Wrangler.

Day 3 update is live. New Payload (Payload-Race?) Map called Hightower...Engineer gets a community-made Wrench...and this secret page http://www.teamfortress.com/engineerupdate/engineer_photos/ seems to indicate Engineers will get a portable sentry.
In Golden Wrench news, seems like there's been a bit of controversy going on. So far, five people have had their Wrenches removed from their inventory and their accounts VAC-banned. Seems that there was a set schedule that Wrenches are scheduled to drop on, the schedule leaked, and a few people knew to craft their items at that exact second to get their items.

Last items(s) of the update
The Gunslinger (replaces wrench): A handy prosthetic hand for our newly enhanced Engineers that replaces the wrench and allows you to toss combat min-sentries. In addition, every third melee hit from the glove is an automatic critical.
Combat mini-sentries: The Gunslinger allows you to sling these little guns around. They cost 100 metal, do half damage, but can be built 4 times faster than a regular sentry. They cannot be upgraded or repaired, however.

That's sorta lame....Of course people are going to take advantage of a leak, but to punish them because the guy whose job it was to secure that schedule fucked up, they get punished? Unfair advantage sure but that's like punishing your kid for playing with the gun you left within their reach.
They didnt just take advantage of the schedule, they took advantage of the server cloud. They sent back packets saying they were smelting metal an unlimited amount of times so they could 100% secure a wrench. So yes, they were justly banned.

The sad part is people even fail at that....If you go out and try to achieve the goal, you often get more points than not doing so.
In multiple games of pl_whatever map, I've gotten 25-30 points in 1 death playing as a Heavy, using a med and the cart for the constant health/ammo to push it and just get ridiculous amounts of points.

Yea,
My single life high score as demoman was like my 2nd hour playing the class on badwater. I think I had like 35-40 points. I captured all the points, got like 3 ubers, took out a bunch of SGs and people. I will probably never top it.
I had a game once as engineer on dustbowl where my SG had over 45 kills, then on the same life built another one where I got over 20 kills. Then the server crashed so the stats didn't save... another thing I will probably never top. That was me playing the class, working with the team, and defending the capture point.

I'd probably rage quit at that point if I was on the opposite team. NO SG should be able to get 45 kills....EVER. A smart enough team should always be able to get an SG before it hits even 10 kills.
I've had games like that as well with my sentry getting 30+ kills. It's pretty hilarious when the other team just cannot get their shit together whatsoever.
I've been pretty disinterested in TF2 lately though. I was hoping the amount of engies used in a game would've gone down by now, but most games still have like 4+ engies a side. Combine that with 3+ snipers and two or three spies and you have a recipe for repeat failure.
There also seems to be an influx of dumbass medics lately as well. I cant stand those who insist on healing the same guy as me (thanks for increasing BOTH of our uber charge times dipshit), or those who just are completely oblivious to the game going on around them and refuse to heal anyone but the heavy they've been locked on for five minutes.
Overall it just seems like there's been a LOT more scrubs playing.

This game definitely has ups and downs with skill level based on day of the week, and updates/sales. There are some days I play for 2 hours and can't find a decent game, other days I've played all afternoon and had good games throughout.
It's funny with snipers and spies. If a team has 1 great spy and 1 great sniper it makes night and day difference and can shut down the other team. Having 3-4 mediocre ones just guarantees getting rolled. In that regard those are those two most skill based classes.

You need to find a server with class limits. I know the one I play on has engis limited down to 3. Of course that's a big problem if 3 chuckleheads grab the slots and leave your team defenseless but it's more fun than having 5+ engis on both sides.

Class limits are a double-edged sword in my opinion. When there's no limits, you have the potential of winding up with an over abundance of one class. However, when there are class limits, you get everyone scrambling to fill up that one class that's capped at like two or three, and in most cases, wind up with awful people playing that role and costing your team the game.

I'd like to know this as well. I don't play too often and while I don't think I'm that bad and I can rack up some kills every now and then, I'd still say I'm less than average skill. The only classes I'm decent with are Heavy/Medic/Sniper since those the classes I've spent the most time with. Any time I try out another class, I don't really know what I'm doing and just feel like I'm not helping out my team in any way.
I know that there are bots, and that's decent practice, but I still think there's no better practice than playing online against real people. But I don't want to play a class I'm not good with and be a drain on my team and have a bunch of 1337 pro people bitching at me about "you suck as xxxx, you're fail life, go kill yourself" etc etc etc.

While playing, you'll randomly get Weapons and (rarely) Hats. The hats are purely cosmetic, so if you never find one, you're still on even ground with everyone else. The drops are purely random. They're not linked to number of kills, number of deaths, nothing. You'll just find them as you play. You can only find a limited number of drops each week, and that resets on Thursday morning (iirc).

This. They update TF2 all the time, adding in tons of new content. There's absolutely zero need for a TF3. Maybe once they develop a new engine, but I don't see that happening for quite awhile considering how versatile the Source engine is. We'll see Episode 3 before we hear any talks of TF3.

Yeah it is pretty cool but annoying for the scout. I also like it because it only reload when your not shooting
hope that made sense.

Why only the Scout?
Doesn't firing always cancel out the reload animation?

noit is just that with the scout I am "VERY" inaccurate so I always spam bullets with the scattergun. When you have it on auto-reload it seems it slows does the firing a bit because it is always reloading for me.

FYI:
Are you the player in your Team Fortress 2 (http://joystiq.com/game/team-fortress-2) group known not just for proficiency in a certain class, but in the special skill of hat storytelling as well? If so, you're a shoo-in for Valve's latest contest.
"Fans have been mailing us for some time now," Valve said on the TF2 blog (http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=4245), "asking for a contest that didn't involve modeling or level design. So now they get their wish. That's right: you'll be competing over who can describe hats the best." The full details can be found here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1411400), but essentially, you can send in a description of one of the game's hats, and Valve might use it in the game.
In addition to tales of headwear, Valve also announced a bonus for TF2 fans who buy Worms Reloaded (http://www.joystiq.com/game/worms-reloaded): Holy Hand Grenade accessories and a new helmet for the Soldier. Buy Reloaded before September 2 to get access to these (purely decorative) items.http://i.joystiq.com/2010/08/25/describe-team-fortress-2s-hats-in-the-tf2-hat-describing-contes/
The Worms Reloaded promo seems pretty damn cool.
...Why must they do this to me. So, so, so tempted to pre-order Worms now. I like the games, but the TF2 hat and grenades has put it over the top.

I've only played the Xbox 360 version of TF2, and that was maybe half a year ago since I played it last. Did they ever update it to be like the PC version/is there a comparison site where I can see what I'll need to get caught up on before jumping in on the PC version?

At the very bottom is a link to the major content patches of the game. In short, there's over double the weapons, new game modes, new maps, balance tweaks, and hats. Hats perhaps being the most important addition.

Perhaps nothing, they are. Though they're a bit overpowered, you'll stare slackjawed and let an enemy spy escape just because you're stunned by the beauty of his towering pillar of hats and not at all suspicious beard.

Eh, it isn't so bad.
You'll start off with only the weapons you had on 360. The most notable exception comes from Engy, who can now upgrade all buildings to level 3 (and not just sentries). All of the new stuff needs to be gotten through achievements (one weapon rewarded per milestone) or from random drops. Before you ask, random drops are completely random, with no rhyme or reason behind them. Well, you are limited to ~8 a week (from random drops), but thats it.
So, long story short, just hop in games and play. You'll pick up new weapons along the way, and can learn what they do as they come to you.

I've started up my own TF2 server, check it out in my sig if you'd like to support another CAG's endeavor!
It is still a work in progress, so it may be a bit unstable from restarts and still needs a lot of modding.

Yeah, I'm not digging the store. Everything is insanely overpriced.

Tell me about it. $17.50 for the croc hat? The sniper pack is regularly priced at $30, which is more than the fucking game. I'm really hoping stuff is just priced like that for now to get people to play to find the items rather than just buy them right away.
