I will play. I was playing online, but I kept getting my ass kicked.
There was this one match where I kicked the other guy's ass whenever our units fought, but he won because he basically had all the capture points and I was too slow.

Hmm... I thought you had to preorder the game to get into the beta. How long will this beta be going on for?
I can't wait for this game, but it would take forever to download, so I would want the beta to be going on for a while.

Yea, this has been my nightly activity. Me and a group of friends have gone from starcraft to wc3 to dawn of war through the years and we plan to move to dawn of war 2 next.
It is a very different rts game. There is no resource gathering, nothing to be built, and there is a resource that is gained through fighting battles, so it is definitely offense oriented. Like the guide says, if you aren't attacking or capturing a point, you're doing it wrong. You also choose a hero like in warcraft 3 and all of your units level up to increase health/damage through combat. Then you can upgrade their weapons and such through the units themselves, no global upgrades.
Right now, there are some obviously balance issues, the main problem being the techpreist and mechboy heroes are the only classes capable of throwing down defensive buildings, turrets. Right now, these turrets, when placed correctly, completely dominate all the tier 1 units. They even go so far as to outrange your base defenses, so you simple build a turret outside an enemy base and it attacks their defenses worry free.
My current favorite race/hero is the Eldar with the Warpspider Exarch. Anti-grav grenades and army teleportation is awesome.

Nah, the beta was released to everyone on Steam this past Tuesday.
Steam says it takes up 2256 MB.
I cannot find any information on when it ends, so I am going to assume that it ends on or near release day, which is February 18th.

I thought that I was suppose to camp and protect my hero. I want to build more big baddies for castle defense. Why can't my big daddies capture buildings?
Are units weaknesses like this?
Meele --> Range (in close range fights) assuming both have tier two monsters.
crystalklear64

It depends on the unit and the upgrades you give them.
Like the Eldar Wraithlords vs. Spacemarine Dreadnaught. Their standard sword thing does good damage in melee, you can take on a Dreadnaught if you get the first hit in even though the Wraithlord has less life. However, if you equip your Wraithlord with a Brightlance anti-vehicular cannon you get get some melee strength hits in at range first.
In tier-1 there is also melee specific units like the Howling Banshees for the Eldar and the... Reapers? (the space marines with big swords and jetpacks). They do almost no ranged damage but lots of melee damage. If they get up to your ranged units, your ranged units will lose in a fight.

The game is pretty good (though I do find the unit readability to be a bit of a problem, due to some of the color choices), but I imagine the MP component of this game will get completely ruined real fast, once they add in the special paid DLC units that they've been hinting at.

Ya, thanks for the help.
I had no idea you could only purchase three upgrades for your hero, I just kept buying them and started to wonder why the same ones kept coming up, haha.
The game as of now seems a little imbalanced, seems like ground units are crap. But I dunno. And getting energy seems way slow, whats the point of two resources?

I realized—and I think you did too—that you can upgrade the Power nodes with satellite power stations. That boosts how much Power you can gain, but it still accumulates pretty slow.
As far as I know, by having two resources they can better balance the costs of the units and upgrades, which dictates how many of each unit and combination of units you can make. Like you wouldn't want a player to spam a bunch of tanks and roll over the opponent, which is why tanks cost low Requisition and high Power—at least for the Orks.
I hope that made sense.
DarkNessBear
01-31-2009, 02:26 AM
Oh, can you have more units if you add more power nodes? When I create a power thing I usually make 3 power node things.
If an enemy has a power node on it and you capture it, do you get the resources from that? Or does the enemy?

Uh I think the amount of units you can have are capped off at 100. I meant that by having two resources the developer can control how many units of a type you can make in succession and to a degree the combination of units at one time.
If the enemy has power stations and you capture their power node, then you gain control of their power stations.

Yea thats one of my issues too, the commanders are not distinct enough from the regular units at a quick glance. In DoW, you knew when a commander unit was in the area thanks to their size/look and the ability to dominate whole squads.
Another thing I really don't like is how hard it can be to finish units off. Once you activate that flee skill, you take hardly any damage and you move very fast, making retreats easy. Its good that you can force your enemy to retreat, but I want to finish them off damn it! A speed boost with damage reduction? : / How about one or the other.
In going with the entire game being simplified, I really miss morale. It offered a different way to approach combat. Instead of going for pure damage you could just break the enemy morale and have them become useless.

Pretty disappointed in this game relative to the hype it's been getting.. a 'craft game this is not. People had been saying best RTS since Starcraft.. haaa, right. I'll stick to WC3 until SC2 thanks.

I think the entire focus being on combat is fantastic. No worrying about your building's build order or having to worry about how many workers to build or anything like that. Instead you can focus entirely on battle strategy which makes the battles much more fun than in the craft games imo, and only have to deal with one hero makes it nice and simple, unlike WC3 which always had far too much going on for me to ever be good at.

My #1 complaint is that the controls are way too floaty. The rectangle-select grouping more than it should, the delay between initiation of command and execution, move defaulting to attack-move, selection defaulting to groups, etc.. it's all too imprecise.
But I have a lot of complaints. That's just the one I absolutely cannot forgive. It all but kills micro entirely.
I guess that's something many casuals may appreciate, as micro-intensive RTSs tend to turn off newcomers due to the steep learning curve. Personally I'd rather play something deep with a steep learning curve than something shallow that I can pick up quickly.
Also, not gameplay related, but man the art direction sucks.
Let's play some Warcraft 3 :)

Also, is there a controls guide anywhere for DoW? I couldn't find controls in the in-game options menu. I figured out most all the hotkeys, as they're stolen straight from Blizzard (ctrl+# grouping, shift-queuing, etc) but I couldn't find a button to show health bars (like alt in WC3).

I'd love to try it, but the demo can't get past the opening cut scene without crashing. :-(
Which is strange, because I can play Company of Heroes without any problems...
I'll need to check my graphic cards and see if they're properly installed, as I can't seem to enable SLI. I know it was working last year but something may have been knocked around when I was installing more RAM.

the beta is a lot of fun, and i will definitely be getting the full game. I mainly played Warcraft 3 before but i am finding this game to be a great change of pace. From what I have played so far it seems like a much faster paced game than warcraft 3, which is great

Actually, I really enjoy World in Conflict because it borrows heavily from the FPS genre in terms of online accessibility. Up to 8 teammates, four distinct classes, and zero base building. More online RTS games like that, please.

it doesn't even feel like the same game, they are almost nothing alike, its like too different series of RTS games only they have some similar gfx.
And I like it like that.
No more stupid morale breaking, no building bases of any sort, no super powered commander units (you have commander units, but its more like the hero in wc3, they can't take on full squads alone in a straight fight). The cover system is so much better and its like 20% capping points, 80% combat.
Its just a super streamlined RTS game that lets you get right to the fighting, skipping all the boring stuff inbetween.

So it's more like the tabletop? I hated building a base in the first one, it just wasn't very Warhammerish. The tabletop is all about moving across the board and fighting, so I'm glad to hear it's more like its source material. I can't wait to give this a whirl... damn thing is taking so long to download though.

I really agree with one of the devs regarding online play in RTS games (http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1074&page=2):
We want to draw more people online, because online is what gives a game longevity. And the three on three, we really wanted to focus a lot on making that a cool mode. Because we ask people when they lose a three-on-three, "Why'd you guys lose?" And we'd always hear, "I don't know. I was doing great. My teammates just must have sucked." You know what I mean?
But they have a lot of fun. And they're like, "I built like three turrets up here, and some guy tried to come up and take the point and got owned. I don't know why my teammates can't handle their shit. I was on top of my shit, and I got that cool unlock.
And so that's the feeling--it's like Call of Duty 4 and Counter-Strike. You're always doing awesome. And losing is more kind of, "It would have been better had we won, but whatever, I was kicking back." And so we built these rules so that--we kind of tried to identify the major archetypes. Some people like building stuff, so we built the engineer for that. They like being turtlers, so you can turtle, but instead of turtling in your base, turtle out where your teammates can benefit from it. There's the fighter, when you just like knocking shit around.
And there's what we call the troubleshooter--they're kind of the loners, who kind of like to break off and solve problems on their own. We gave them the teleporter, the infiltrators, so they can kind of break off from the pack and cause trouble. How those interact, we're watching that very closely, because we want to enhance that and make it a very rich ecosystem of cooperation.

Is there a hotkey in blizzard games to instantly select your HQ without taking up one of your assignments? Theres a dedicated button for it in DoW2.
Maybe there was in WC3 but I don't remember.
Not really.. but there's also no HQ. There's a Town Hall / Tree of Life / Necropolis.. but that's hardly the same, since it only trains workers and you have more than one and don't lose if it dies.
As an equally crucial hotkey WC3 has spacebar, which brings you to the last active object. It's sort of a smart-hotkey.. it associates itself with the most recent building of yours to either finish an upgrade, train a unit, or be attacked.

I played a few games with the space marines after the patch and they really seem much stronger now. The tac squad with rocket launcher really kicks ass now.

Less than a week till this game comes out now. The beta is still going on and its still buggy as all get out. I rarely get through a game where someone does not lock up or drop from the game. I hope the release is better than this. I really love the game play but the bugs are killing me.

The release day patch will have another code patch. The problem with the beta is that due to GFWL, they can't just throw out code patches since MS requires certifications for anything they release. As such, they were mainly able to fix smaller balance issues.
I've gotten really good playing as the orks, specifically the Kommando Nob. A lot of people won't like playing him, but he's great even though he requires quite a bit of finesse. He's definitely a trouble maker, his abilities allow him to do all sorts of nasty stuff. His remote bombs can blow up entire power points, costing the enemy team a lot of requisition in the process. His knife is just plain powerful, and by infiltrating around he can disrupt all sorts of defenses and incoming attacks either by just sneaking up and attacking something critical (like a suppression weapon) or using his bombs to throw everyone around.

I love his death bomb. Works great against the nids. The whole brood gathers up around you to beat you to death and as soon as you die BOOM! so do they.

It's kind of strange they went with Game for Windows and then decided to use Steam as DRM, it would of just been easier to use Steam for everything.
Well I ordered my copy from Amazon a few weeks ago (after it was announced Steam would be the DRM) since I had a coupon there, but of course I used free shipping so it's hard to say when Amazon will send it out to me.

According to a guy who claims he talked to a Relic dev at PAX, GFWL was used because the matchmaking was, at the time, better than Steamworks'.
So while Steam would allow Relic to release patches without dealing with MS certification b.s., GFWL evidently gives them what they want with regards to multiplayer.
I still hate GFWL.

Why do you hate GFWL. Its worked out great in the beta. The matchmaking was nice and I like that its linked to all my friends on Xbox live and Zune.

Yea i hate it too.
So slow and clumsy feeling.
And the invite system? I can barely get around it on the 360 but give it a pass since its a console, but no excuses on the pc.

IGN gave it a 9, which seems like a good sign. Still trying to decide whether to wait on this or not, as I'm still not done with Red Alert 3, and my feeble brain can't handle more than 1 RTS at a time.
I dug DoW 1 though, so maybe by the time I get around to buy it we'll see a price drop?

Does anyone have issues with searching for playable matches? It's taken me on avg 10-15mins to find matches. I do have a low rank, but was wondering if it's something else?

It was relatively slow in beta too.
Other than that though, this game is SICK!

10-15 minutes does seem way too high. It usually took me 2-3 minutes to find a game.

ive been really excited for this game for a long time and i don't have much else on my plate at the moment so i'll probably pick it up and plow through the SP mode a few times. The 1up review (A-) made it sound like a lot of fun with the loot aspect.
If i'm brave enough i might even take it online. If there is anybody here who wants to play online but only casually, not against the super competitive players, go ahead and add me. Be warned though, i'll more than likely be terrible.

Who is Cyrus' voice actor? It's driving me nuts. I think it's David Hayter... but I can't be sure. Imdb is no help.

I wish there was more than just 1 new 6 player map. I played the other 3 maps quite a bit in the beta and it would have been nice to at least have 3 new maps rather than just 1. Though for a game this big I really had hoped it would be more like 10 maps.

yeah, the so little maps kinda sucks, but i assume they'll release a whole bunch down the line.

got it the other day, first RTS I've picked up for PC since.. Warcraft III lol, good fun I love the direction it went for the action RPG. Enjoying it very much. I played CivRev on the PS3 for a bit too but on the PC, this is good stuff. Plus achievements for me = win. and steam too. I like steam =D
