Tooling around with Siren: New Translation (ordered from play-asia when it was $25). I'm enjoying it and I can deal with the usual problems that plague this particular genre.
I kind of like sneaking around beating down a Shibito with a No Parking sign or using the occasional double-barrel. But of course they have to offset this by making you sneak around as a little girl...(Resident Evil 2 anyone?). It's definately cool that there are 50 different weapons. That was a good selling point for me. Who cares if a bunch of them suck. Not many games can you pick up a mattress beater or guitar and beat up stubborn japanese zombies.
I've read a few articles about Silent Hill: HC but I can't seem to decide whether I'll like it or not. I beat #1-4. I enjoyed #2 the most because it was closest to a Jacob's Ladder type story. #1 & # 3 dealt too much with Satanist horse crap and not enough surrealist/existentialism. #4 seemed like some other game that got coated over with a Silent Hill story-line last minute.
From what I gather Homecoming let-downs include:
a) Not faithful to the core series because of new American development.
I don't care about this that much because this series is all over the place. Like I said, #1 and #3 are about Satanists. #2 Uses Silent Hill locale as like an out of body emotional plane. #4 about a serial killer and you're locked in a room.
b) The protagonist is too good at combat.
I don't think this would be a problem for me since I wouldn't mind bashing some monsters. Sometimes our horror games like to keep us from hurting stuff.
c) Lame, jump through the window/door scary moments.
Definately not a signature of the series. I could see how that would be annoying.
d) Voice acting, control scheme....yadda yadda yadda. The normal problems with the genre...
Am I missing anything here that might be a breaker for me? It might seem like I'm over-analyzing things here but I'm getting to the point in my life where I gotta draw the line sand and just keep shit outta the house and keep my money/goozex points in my pocket.
