I plan on getting a new monitor for the comp and I was hoping there's a way to play my consoles in HD through the monitor. So, I was looking things up and it seems like I can use a simple hdmi to dvi cable to connect my consoles to a widescreen lcd computer monitor. Something like the following:

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-PureAV-AV22400-06-6-Foot-HDMI/dp/B000HEANCE/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234155346&sr=1-10

Am I right, or is it more complicated that I'd need some kind of converter box? Right now I only have a 360, but I plan on using this setup for a PS3 in the near future. I know there are monitors out there with hdmi and component inputs, but they're much more expensive and not worth the extra cost.

Edit:

So I've been doing more research, and it seems like the cable will work with the ps3 as long as the monitor supports hdcp. As for the 360, I can use the VGA HD AV cables (ie: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B6MLTG/ref=asc_df_B000B6MLTG708042?smid=A2R0FX412W1BDT&tag=priceg-videogames-20&linkCode=asn). Am I missing anything else here? Anymore info or advice would be appreciated..

i would also like to know if that would work. i use the VGA cable but would like digital transfer rather than analog.

i tried using one of those HDMI to DVI adapters and it didnt work. wondering if anybody else has experience doing this sort of thing.

I've been getting most of my info from here:

But any first hand experience from others here would be helpful.

HDMI to DVI shouldn't cost you that much money. Under $10, usually around $5.

I'm fairly confident there are monitors with hdmi inputs.

after a quick google i found this:

Something like that would be easiest solution with the best results id imagine.

You're not missing anything. I use a cheapass mono price hdmi to dvi cable along with optical audio cable to play my 360 using my monitor and my pc's speaker system.

Here, threw this together. Hopefully its similar on the PS3, but I don't have one so I don't know:

DVI doesn't carry audio, so that will be lost with an HDMI to DVI cable. You need another source for your sound. You can get stereo sound by using the RCA connections (red and white) or optical goodness using the optical audio port on the RCA plug and plugging it into the optical audio port on your speakers.

I've done this exact thing with a PS3, and I can confirm that it works (well, at least for a Samsung 226bw with the PS3 set to 720p). The only thing to keep in mind is that unless the monitor is 16:9 (most seem to be 16:10) or the monitor can do 1:1 or scale it while maintaining the correct aspect ratio, things won't look right. At least for my monitor, it would stretch the 16:9 image to 16:10, and also cut off a lot of the right and left side of the picture.

I've heard that 360 will correctly center the image if the monitor is an odd size, but I don't own one, so I can't confirm this.

Just throwing this out there, but there's also the option of getting a TV and hooking your computer up to it (just use the same DVI to HDMI cable). Guess it really depends on what you mainly do with your computer, how big you want to go with the screen, and how much money you're willing to spend :)

Thanks a lot for the info, I wasn't aware of the resolution problem and it definitely will affect the monitor I buy. Fortunately, there's a couple monitors I've been looking at with 16:9 that should work fine.

lol thanks for the drawing... that's actually a pretty good looking xbox symbol. Anyways, I think I'm just gonna use the vga cables for my 360 since it seems like the cheaper alternative and has outputs for sound that I can route to a speaker system.
