There's no point buying a physical copy. Regardless of how you purchase L4D, it'll be tied to your Steam account, which gives you unlimited downloads on as many PCs as you want. The catch is your account can only be active in one place at one time.
Besides, last time I checked, L4D was being sold in a flimsy DVD case. (I'd still buy all my PC games at B&M if they came in glorious big boxes circa 1995.)
So if a piece of plastic and disc are worth an extra $20, so be it
However, if you're interested in FEAR 2, Dawn of War II, and/or Empire Total War, I'd buy them at retail; each one uses Steamworks which allows you to register the game on Steam. So you can have a physical copy and the convenience of Steam, all at retail price. (I'm not a paid spokesmen for Monolith, Relic, or Creative Assembly :) ).

How does it run on single core processors? I have a 3.2 ghz P4, 2GB of ram and an HD4650. I can run crysis on med with around 30 fps, but I dont know how this'll run. Considering the source engine is pretty CPU dependant under all that fluff.

I've switched PC purchasing almost exclusively to Steam (and some GoG) because I'm completely over not having a boxed copy, especially at Steam's prices and ease of use.
There is no download limit for almost all games. I think there are a few EA games that have a re/de-activation scheme where you can have like 5 concurrent installations at any given time, but someone else probably knows more. None of the Valve games have any restrictions.

If only this was a B&M sale. I can't stand not having a physical copy of a full game.
I'm pretty sure that you can backup the digital copy of the game onto a disc once fully downloaded... If you really NEED to have a physical disc.
Now as for the game is concerned it is very fun IF you have friends to play with in my opinion. Pugging in online matches is very annoying and the teams are usually stacked with zero ability of a moderator being able to switch teams in order for it to be a much more competitive game. With all that being said, this is a great deal for $25. If you haven't bought this game yet, I would definitely suggest to buy it now.

I bought a physical copy only because it was the cheapest method to buy it at the time. That said, I never took the DVD out of the case. I just attached the CD-Key to my steam account and started the download.
As others have stated, buying it physically and online is really no different for a Steam game. You *CAN* back up your steam games to disc which could add extra cost (price of a blank dvd) but even if you have a physical copy like I do, I couldn't play it if Steam went down in a fiery blaze of glory... So what does having a physical copy really get you? The convenience of not having to burn a backup DVD (assuming you would do that to begin with.)
PS Just saw Pajama Man's post and agree wholeheartedly. Burnout Paradise Ultimate - sans extra DRM on Steam. I was hoping this weekend was either going to be that announcement or a free TF2 weekend to coincide with the Scout pack.

Just a reminder that every Valve game sold at retail funnels down to Steam. You are getting box art, a key, and a disc with a backup of the game that must be registered on Steam. $25 is a steal. Get the game and back it up on your own DVD if you don't care much for box art and game keys.

Why? You can't sell or trade anything that is tied to your Steam account - which a physical disc would be. I suppose reinstalling would be faster from a disc, but I'd rather save the space if I can't resell the game anyway.

This game is awesome on the PC! For anyone debating between the 360 and PC version, I can honestly say that the PC version blows away the 360 version if your computer is up to the task. I can't stop playing this game, even after I've played through levels over and over. It's the equivalent of team-based counterstrike in the sense that it's highly addictive and the game actually depends more on who you're playing with than variety in the levels. You just never know how other new players are going to play, and that's what makes it awesome ... are they going to set off a car alarm and bring the horde down on the team. Is someone going to make a bad choice and get left behind, will your team mate go crazy and shoot you right before you get to the safehouse, will the chopper come but you're pounced on by a hunter right before you can get on board and you're left for dead .... you just never know ... and that's what makes it awesome ... not to mention the mods on PC that will start to pop up (and have already ... imagine the hulk as one of the infected in your game ... won't see that on 360.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up OP! Been wanting to pick this up for some time now, have only heard good things. Definitely worth a try for $25.
And all the moaning about "I want a physical copy", then go buy it at the store. But honestly, with Steam, an online copy is the same thing except you don't have all these discs laying around that you don't need. Steam is a good service, and there are not download restrictions on most of the games on there (unless they are by EA ...).

Also, one of the lesser known features of steam is that you can back up games to your HD or DVD. That way, if you reformat often or want to uninstall the game, you won't have to re download the entire game again.

Sometimes I wonder if people have ever actually used steam. Steam connects the game key to your steam account. You can login to any computer with steam installed (its free to install and create a login) with your account which has all your steam purchases tied to it and download the game as many times as you want on as many computers as you want.

Would you learn to read before making retarded comments like this? Every single time someone mentions Steam, someone makes this unintelligent claim. Then a million people tell them that you can re-download and re-install as many times as you would like. They even have mentioned you can make your on back-up disc of the data to avoid re-downloading and that you can install on multiple machines so you can play wherever you are. There is absolutely zero reason to complain about Steam unless you are an uninformed moron. But even with all of the correction, people like you come running in and blindly post the same useless crap instead of reading the posts to find out what has even been said.
Oh, and what happens when your precious DVD version of a game gets scratched or a nephew comes along and breaks it? As long as Steam servers are up, your games will always be available to you (and Valve isn't going out of business anytime soon).
This is an awesome deal if you're interested in L4D. No reason for anyone who's computer can handle it to not go ahead and get it.
I'm not trying to be rude, but it gets freaking tiresome with everyone always running in and dogging on some great deal for some stupid reason. If you don't like a particular game or something, fine. Go say that in a review thread. But leave the deals be. And if you can't manage to become informed before posting, just shut the hell up and don't post at all.
And before anyone accuses me of being too sensitive, I haven't even played this game, don't have an X360 (which this is a console exclusive on), and am not even sure that this would be my kind of game. So I'm not defending out of some fanboy-type of love. I just hate all of the retarded comments...

Anyway, Valve is releasing a GOTA Edition for PC and Xbox to coincide with the DLC. You might see the original versions discounted, but the GOTA edition will probably hover around the $40 price range for some time.
Check out the L4D Steam Group (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203734) in the PC games subforum if you need help slaughtering zombies.

For the people who want physical copies: Once you install the game you can right click the game and go to properties. There's a button to back up game data, which can be burned to a disc. It's a physical copy without the box art :D

Out of curiousity how does Valve handle stolen accounts? I'd hate to have my account stolen and all my games rendered useless.
Otherwise this is a great deal. I prefer Steam over actual copies myself unless It's a limited edition/big box like Dark Messiah was. That 99 cent Half Life was ownage.

as in requirements to play? I think they're a little higher, I can do TF2 on higher settings while L4D on medium... there's a lot more going on in L4D in terms of zombies on screen. but if you can handle TF2 fine, then I don't think L4D should be too much trouble.

Well I ended up buying it, I know I would kick myself if I didn't. Considering it ran really good when I played the demo. Also, how many of us will impulse buy a 20 dollar game? Now think of the game that you can buy for 20(well 25 :P) here. To me it's a no brainer if your computer can run it. Anyone who won't because it's online and not B&M needs to realize, that once you put in your CD key, your version is no different than those of us who bought it on steam.

Don't worry about it. You'll be very safe if you aren't an idiot. Even if it does get stolen, it's kind of easy to get back. If you've entered a CC with Steam (To pay for a game) and save receipts/print them and stuff of the sort, you're set.
I've had steam for about 5 years now with not a single issue of safety.

[...] You *CAN* back up your steam games to disc which could add extra cost (price of a blank dvd) but even if you have a physical copy like I do, I couldn't play it if Steam went down in a fiery blaze of glory...
I actually heard/read that if Steam ever does go down in flames (which I highly doubt within the next decade or two), then Gabe Newell said that he would set up a sort of "unlock patch" to all steam purchased games... or atleast for all the Valve games.
As for Steam, it is one of the best retailer of games that I have ever encountered, bar-none. The download servers are quick, they have phenomenal uptime (which rivals the WoW servers, if that's any indication). Steam is the Newegg of PC games (in regard to reliability and service, not usually in the term of pricing, which lags behind b&m deals).
As a bonus, most of the games offered in Steam only uses the Steam DRM, which is one the best in ease-of-use and unobtrusiveness in the field. Though I would still buy physical copies when offered at a significantly lower price than in steam, I'd pick up the steam version even if the prices were equal.

I was holding off for the 20 buck price since I didn't think the demo was all that great. But with valve seeing it as a full product like HL2 and charging people 50/60 bucks for it, I have a feeling it will take some time to reach the 20 buck price point.
25 is something I can deal with. Plus its on steam so I'll own it forever.

I already got this for the 360 for Christmas, but I built a computer shortly after and I always kind of wanted to give the PC version a try, so I finally gave in and bit at this price. So far I'm glad I got it. It looks a lot better than the 360 version and it's just easier to control overall. It runs beautifully on max settings on my 9800gt card.
And of course the main reason I got this is because I can't wait to see what custom maps get created when the SDK comes out. A mall level is bound to be one of the first ones, right? Fingers crossed!

Awesome! I was just thinking to myself yesterday that I'd get L4D when it hit $30, and lo and behold.
I feel the folks that want a physical hard copy, but I think Steam is the one Digital Download service that's getting it right. Unlimited downloads, no big deal when you share your account, and sales every weekend. I'm actually liking Steam more and more these days.

That said, I would not count on an "unlock patch" being released if Valve went under. Imagine everyone just lost their jobs at Valve. Do you actually think they're going to go and write an unlock patch for the games? Shit no. You could, however, go find cracks for all of them.
Note the disclaimer. It's not bullshit: http://steamcommunity.com/id/spuffin/games but if you think Valve will always be there or they'll release an unlock patch if they go under you're kidding yourself. There is more here to consider than willingness to write one... if they go bankrupt someone else will buy their assets which would include their IP and writing an unlock patch could very possibly be a HUGE copyright infringement. Know that going into it, but don't kid yourself. You're probably going to have to resort to cracks if it ever happens but that being said, I'm going to continue to buy games off of Steam.

I paid 44.99 for it during the steam pre-release sale, and I've definitely got that out of it in entertainment. The game will appear somewhat short and shallow to you if you don't have 3 other friends at minimum to enjoy the versus mode with, but if you can get into a group that plays quite a bit together it becomes pretty fun even with the limited versus maps currently available. I believe there are also tournaments running now for teams of 4 to test their skills in a competitive environment. The folks I play with run 2 L4D servers and are always looking for new faces to jump in and play with us, probably about 12-15 of us in total right now. Anyone here looking for some new friends to play versus with is welcome to come hang out, we've got a ventrilo server at 208.101.55.236 Port: 5008 , and there's a website at www.halsplayground.com for anyone who needs help finding the servers or whatever.

Processor speed isn't really that important. Gaming has a lot more to do with your graphics card and RAM. Also, I'm pretty sure they refer to 3.0ghz as being the recommended amount if you're still running a Pentium 4 processor. If you have an intel core duo or core 2 duo processor (installed in pretty much every computer in the last 3-4 years), it should exceed that amount, whether you realize it or not. A 3.0ghz Pentium 4 processor is not the same as a 3.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Also, L4D isn't really that demanding from what most people are saying. I haven't tried it on a computer with integrated graphics or anything though, so I can't speak for that.

If you can run HL2 from like 5 years ago, you're fine. A 128 MB Radeon 9800 Pro ran it for me ok with a 2.66 GHz P4. Get this. Retail versions are dumb.
I can run this game smoothly on a very old system (2.4 Ghz P4, 6800 GT 256MB, 1GB RAM, XP) with a mix of low-med settings @1440x900. This isn't a game you really have to have to upgrade your rig to play. One of the reasons I love Valve so much is how well they optimize their games for older comps.
Definitely worth it! Runs well on my PC at 2.2GHz AMD(single core!), 7800GT, 1GB ram, WinXP at 1280x1024. With FREE DLC coming out this spring, this deal can't be beat!

Awesome game (and also very hilarious)! I bought a steam key off of g2play.pl for 15 bucks if you guys want it for cheaper. Granted the site is not the easiest to use but it does work. And for those wanting cases and discs, you can always make your own kick ass custom ones.
I just got it through G2Play - first time I ever heard of the site - and after converting I saved an extra 20%.
Thanks for that super_nerd!
Edit: Actually, the site isn't hard to navigate - just go to the bottom of the page and hit the English flag.
The thing is, the UK English version of the site uses Euros as the exchange currency, and the deal isn't as good as with the Polish Zlotych (you lose about 1 Euro - not much but still).
The Czech flag will convert the price to Korunys, but that doesn't save you anything - in fact it seems about a buck over Steam's 50% deal.

Ouch - that's the first I've heard of it. And that customer support was reprehensible - the rep didn't even read the email.
In any case, I already went ahead and bought it. I live in Hong Kong, so I guess no matter what I'd be buying this game "from another territory". I did this once before with their promos, by changing the "US" to "HK" in the URL and haven't had any problems - yet.
Fingers crossed.
Edit: After reading that entry from The Consumerist, I am at a loss at how Valve would have such policies. I mean, what if you are playing on your laptop during a business trip abroad? What if you relocate to another country altogether? It is the 21st century - people are mobile.
Anyhow, just 10% more to download...

You should def give it a try. is this a laptop? I think in the bios you should be able to set more ram to your nVidia...I think I had that card and set it up to 128 or maybe even up to 230MB; I actually had an HP laptop with specs very similar to yours.. so yeah you can up the video RAM if you want since you have plenty of RAM to go around (3GB) May just have to set settings to low, shaders, shadows especially. and put -console into launch properties just in case your card won't allow to boot right away. I don't want to pressure you into spending $25 though, good luck

Did you seriously not hear about the Thai Orange Box uproar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box#Region-specific_versions)?
Steam's terms of service/EULA specifically prohibits using product keys from regions other than the user's home region. Unless you live in the Czech Republic or Poland or wherever the hell it is this "G2Play" outfit is getting their CD-keys from (and make no mistake, they're just buying retail copies of the games in bulk and reselling the CD-keys; they don't have any special arrangements with Valve or anything), then you won't be able to register the keys to your account (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=461), and if by some freak occurrence they do register, rest assured, they WILL eventually be deactivated. And in the event this happens, Valve doesn't owe you a refund (seeing as you're the one who attempted to violate the service agreement, not to mention the fact that they themselves didn't directly sell you anything in the first place), and can't do anything to help get you your money back; it's entirely up to the seller you bought the key from to refund you, and you have snowball's chance in hell of getting a refund from one of those outfits.

I've only gotten one "match" (i guess thats the word in) since I purchased it friday, and it really is just a lot of fun. I mean there really isn't anything groundbreaking about it in terms of graphics, gameplay etc, but I really think that the co-op brings it together and I hope that other devs can follow suit and bring about good co-op at this level of excellence.

Nothing ground breaking? The gameplay is different than basically any other FPS I have ever played. And the graphics are graphics ... I could honestly care less. It looks good and does the job, I don't see what there is to complain about.
This was $25 well spent, no doubt. One of the best FPS games I have played in a long time. The co-op gameplay brings FPS games to the next level, and is a true zombie/horror game. Thanks again for the heads up OP!

it takes about a year for valve game to drop $10
Actually, takes about 6 months for Valve to drop the price. TF2 came out, it took about 6 months to drop to $19.99 (from $29.99). In-store, they were selling for about $14.99. I bought my copy of TF2 for full price, then 6 months later, I bought a second copy for $15 (and gave my original copy away). Then a bought a few more copies for $10 a few months later for friends.
I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with Counter-Strike: Source when it first came out (I also paid full-price for that too)... so I learned my lesson personally and waited on L4D's big sale (which happened to be about 3 months later). Glad I did.
L4D for 25 bucks is an amazing deal on a even better game
i luckily got it for 40 the day it came out so the extra 15 bucks for a couple of months in advance is not to bad

Freak occurrence my ass. Plenty of people on NeoGAF have gotten them to work. And either way it's only 15 dollars, better than wasting 25 on a game you may not like.
And personally, I've been very disappointed in the amount of the servers that have been up. It's almost as bad as UT3 in terms of population to me. Not enough versus servers for my taste.
I have almost have no trouble getting a good game on TF2, not so with L4D.
EDIT:
Just saw that it went up to 20 USD. Not worth it anymore.

Cheap risk, but an expensive rental. Because that is what it'll end up being.
Freak occurrence my ass. Plenty of people on NeoGAF have gotten them to work.
Valve deactivated thousands of region-abusing keys of The Orange Box. You can not activate keys from outside your region, and if you do, they will be deactivated. There is no question about it.
And either way it's only 15 dollars, better than wasting 25 on a game you may not like.
That's the most dumbass thing I've ever heard. It's better to spend $15 on something that has a 100% likelyhood of either not working at all, or being eventually deactivated, than it is to spend $25 on a legit copy? Seriously, that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Saving $10 isn't worth even a small risk of getting it deactivated later on, much less having deactivation be inevitable. Talk about waste.
And personally, I've been very disappointed in the amount of the servers that have been up. It's almost as bad as UT3 in terms of population to me. Not enough versus servers for my taste.

Defense grid is a tower defense game with many maps. It has 3D graphics and I would liken it to a combination of Desktop Tower Defense and Flash Element Defense 2. If you enjoy tower defense games, then it is worth checking out (and they do have a demo). They are having a sale at 25% off of Defense Grid on Steam to bring the price to 14.99.
I wonder what Steam will do next month on yet another Friday the 13th...

Just wanted to throw in my 2cents.
I already own L4D on 360, but decided to jump on this deal also. With mods the PC version can become something else entirely.
I just downloaded some new user made mods like the one for Resident Evil 3's streets, and its awesome. I am going to try out the prison map (not Resident Evil related) later tonight. Here is the website to get the maps if anyone is interested
http://l4dmapdb.wikidot.com/
I think it was worth a double dip for the mods alone, and if you don't own this game yet, $25 is a steal. DON'T SLEEP ON IT!

BULLSHIT. Steam keys are region locked. I know this first-hand. I picked up a retail copy of L4D from India and tried to reg it (just to prove a point), and it DID NOT ACTIVATE.

G2play is a scam. I registered here just to warn you about this. You will read about alot of happy customers because at first they sent out keys that worked to get good word of mouth. Now their checkout process no longer works. They want you to just paypal the money to their email account. Then you will get no key. When you email them they will say you didn't pay. You email them back and they never reply.
Warning, stay away!

I just ordered my key last weekend (a week after your warning), and they told me I didn't pay/couldn't find my paypal information. I emailed them back and sent them my paypal number and they sent me a key within hours. It is true that steam deactivated a lot of the Orange Box keys sold through this site, but I went back and checked through more information and Steam reactivated many of those keys and corrected the problem. Is it somewhat of a gamble, yes. But the site has worked for me and I've been playing L4D all week with my friends, so I wouldn't call the site a scam, as they do send you a key.
