Twelve Angry Men really isn't a 'guy' movie, it's about a jury, they camera never leaves the jury room the entire time yet it is still interesting but it isn't a guy movie, are you just saying that because it has the word Men in it?

A Few Good Men is the only one I've even seen more than 5 minutes of, and I wasn't impressed. However, I must admit I should get around to seeing the Godfather's one day.

Okay, looking over the list more closely, I have seen A Few Good Men and a couple of the other movies not in the essential list. Maybe I am a man...
And where is Fight Club on this list. If that doesn't get your testosterone pumping, you must just like watching Brad Pitt... (Get it? No. Maybe so?)

I've looked at everyones list. A lot of these movies are very violent. I have nothing against violent movies but here are some films that all of you missed.
1. Old Yeller - There is no greater love than a boy and his dog
2. North by Northwest - Cary Grant is the smoothest son-of-a-bitch on the Silver screen, bar none!
3. To Kill a Mockingbird - Gregory Peck puts his career and his balls on the line to defend a black man against a town where racism runs high.
4. High Noon - The ultimate guy movie. One man vs. Many. This is the template which so many movies are copied from.

09-16-2004, 01:50 AM
This thread reeks of insecurity. If you need a list of movies to reassure you that your crucial equipment is still firmly attached, then I'm afraid you have severe issues. Nonetheless, there are some great movies on the list, but also several...not-so-great ones.
Cheers to Eternal Sunshine! What a spectacular film--but then again, Charlie Kaufmann is nothing short of brilliant. If you haven't seen this, you need to.
Also, to all the homophobic preteens posting: remember, homoeroticism was a key component of the majority of '80s action flicks.

let me see, i think it was back in the fifth grade, or even sixth grade. noisy projector in the back of the class showing how 'things' worked. girls began to seem different after that.
okay okay, back to the lists. great movies mentioned. i like them war movies, and mob/gangster movies. when realistic violence is portrayed, then it means something. example: Blackhawk Down (nobody mentioned it, yet)
I'm surprised this list got this far without Caddyshack being mentioned.

09-16-2004, 08:20 AM
tsk tsk cornfed..... thought you were above this.... I didn't realize that watching a special movie made me a man or not.
Ehh, its more of an exaggerated way of putting movies guys should really watch. I don't honestly care if someone watches them or not.. although the Dirty Dozen.. that is without a doubt something every man should watch at some point in his life.
Cornfedwb
09-16-2004, 08:25 AM
Ok, edited the list as I deemed fit (its my thread, deal with it). Although most comedies just aren't going to make the list.. I can't think of any true comedy that is really a "man-flick". And the reference to Cat Balou.. watch it, you'll understand.
Oh, and for those that felt like commenting how the movies on the list suck.. first off, I'd hate to see what movies you watch, secondly, I don't particularly give a rat's ass.

I see your point about adding comedies, although I think Caddyshack, Animal House and Old School definitely have more appeal to a male audience.

Glory
Braveheart
13th warrior - haha j/j /j
Based on Quackzilla's definition Starship troopers would be a candidate, but I just don't see it as a man's movie. More cultish.

No Die Hard?? John McClain is the action hero of the everyday man, plus he has great one-liners.

The definition of a guy movie:
All male cast, no thought provoking dialogue, and massive amounts of senseless violence.
12 angry men only has one of those traits, yet it is still a great movie but not a guy movie

Have you seen 12 Angry Men? You keep disparaging it.. but if you'd seen the movie, you'd understand why its on a list of man movies. Pure unadulerated manly drama, rage, etc.
And Quackzilla, I'm not talking about action flicks, I'm talking about pure Man-Flicks.. through provoking dialogue is present in nearly every one I've chosen.. and none of them are pure action/explosion/exploding monster movies.

What I'm saying is something like Black Dog is a terrible movie but it's a great guy flick, 12 angry men is just the opposite. It's not a chick flick but it isn't really testoterone feuled

Your definition of what we're looking for here is wrong. Movies that make you realize what it is to be a man.. the Dirty Dozen does that, Scarface does that, Full Metal Jacket does that, 12 Angry Men does that.. Black Dog does not do that.
Explosions and asinine gunfights are all well and good.. but all they do is pump up the audience and give you a short period of visceral thrills.. and that's not what this thread is on about.

That I agree with. In that scene One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Five Easy Pieces should be on there, I have no idea why I suggested thre (I suggested Easy Rider before) Jack Nicholson Movies

well, so far the list has been updated and most of the films seem to be good choices. the only ones that I am shocked to see are not there are:
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Star Wars Trilogy
Saving Private Ryan
and Where Eagles Dare which I totaly forgot about and can't believe that so many people have seen it, because it sort of feels like an obscure cult film if you ask me.

Ah so you're talking more about movies that contain some little bit of a life lesson for men, rather than what we typically think of as all out action guy flicks.
Well then here's a couple off the top of my head:
Donnie Brasco
We Were Soldiers
Gladiator
Hamburger Hill
The French Connection
Unforgiven
High Noon
Band of Brothers
Once Upon a Time in the West
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Tigerland
Leon
The Untouchables
Training Day
61*
Ransom
Empire of the Sun
The Edge
The Rock
Black hawk Down
I admit the last 4 or 5 are kinda reaching as far life lessons + action go, but I was running low on ideas.

this thread turned into "my favorite movie list" instead of "man-movie" list a long time ago...
I noticed that as well.

Perhaps, though I didn't really care for a few of the movies I just listed that much.
The Crying Game. If you are man enough to sit through that you can do anything. Oh, and to the guy that put down boondock saints, bravo.
