I just got my new notebook and it's running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I decided to tweak the power settings to get them the way I want them.
Here are the settings:
Balanced (plugged in)
Turn off the display: Never
Put the computer to sleep: 1 hour
These settings worked fine the first day that I changed them (Saturday). But now the computer simply won't go into sleep mode. I don't understand why it worked once, but now it won't work anymore.
Anyone out there know how fix this? Any help is appreciated.

I have never had a computer where sleep or hibernate mode ever worked properly. All it does is cause problems. I would just disable that shit.

I just got this desktop and had an issue with sleep mode as well. I would just disable it.

When I first got Vista I put it in sleep mode and when it would return everything stopped working right. To this day it was the only thing that went wrong with me and Vista. Just turn it off.

I see a few things here.
1) Why would you want to run in balanced mode while your plugged in? Your just trottling down your processor and getting less performance?
2) why would you set it to go to sleep after one hour? If you're going to be away from it for so long put it to sleep on your own.
I don't know, I used sleep mode in Vista all the time when I had it on my laptop and never had an issue with it. I just closed the lid though, so it might be because we are doing it in different ways. I have windows 7 on my laptop right now, and like most things in the OS, the sleep mode is a copmplete mess. Just screw around with it and I'm sure you'll find something that works.

Sleep and hibernate never work, nor can users fathom what it does. After hearing "my computer is broken" every morning, you learn to disable it.
When it works, it's great. But those times are so few. :(

Yeah, my issue was the opposite on my laptop...
It would go to sleep and then not wake back up. I would have to restart... what a bitch.
I have it set to never when plugged in and the screensaver after 10 minutes. No issues now, if I leave it on accidentailly I melt some snow at the North Pole. Not a big deal.

My girlfriend's laptop does the same thing. It'll go to sleep just fine the first time, but after that, it won't sleep on a timer again until a reboot.
I'm also having ridiculous issues with my desktop. If I hibernate, my PC will turn itself back on. Sometimes immediately, sometimes after hours. It's really random and pisses me off. I've had the problem with every PC except my current server (when it was my desktop).

The reason I like to use sleep mode is because I usually download stuff right before going to bed. I like to let the download go for about an hour and then hibernate/sleep for the rest of the night.
I always thought my old computer's sleep mode that would only hibernate whenever it felt like it was because of Windows XP. I guess this is a windows problem in general.
As for why I have it on balanced? It's because I like to put it into performance mode whenever I'm doing something like gaming. If I'm just checking e-mail and surfing the net, I keep it on balanced (which is most of the time). That way the computer doesn't get as hot. My room gets hot enough as is.
Thanks for letting me know that hibernate/sleep flat out doesn't work. Although it's pretty disappointing. You'd think they could at least get it right if it's a feature in the OS.

You can do the same thing with the shutdown command, although it's not as graceful... in theory.
Make a shortcut with this as the destination:
To Hybernate: shutdown /h /t TIMEINSECONDS
To Shudown: shutdown /s /t TIMEINSECONDS
Timeinseconds being the time in seconds... duh.

If this is your scenario, you can use a download program like DAP (download accelerator plus) that has an option to shut down the system when downloading is complete.

The best way to fix sleep mode and hibernation is to install the Windows 7 Beta.

I'm having the same problems with 7. I think it has to due with me overclocking though.

I have a copy of Windows 7 64 bit. The problem is that my computer's manufacturer sucks when it comes to support of 64 bit drivers. I guess I'll go download the 32 bit version and give it a shot.

I've honestly never had a good experience with sleep/suspend/hibernate on any version of Windows, or on Linux distros. I just disable it and when I walk away I turn my computer off, or I don't.

Vista was the first Windows version that had really usable sleep and hibernate in my experience. But this was on systems with Intel chipset and even an Intel motherboard on the desktop system. (Both are running Win7 now.) Results on non-Intel chipset can vary wildly. AMD has never seemed to get this right. The Cool and Quiet functionality on the first generation Phenoms is so broken that many systems ship with it disabled in the BIOS.
Sleep can work great if you have the right stuff in the box. But it only takes one ill behaved driver to ruin it all.

If epo can't make it work, there is no chance for us meer mortals.
