View Full Version : A Good Multi-IM Client ?

I know there are all sorts of IM Clients that support MSN, Yahoo, AIM, and so on but is there one that can support multiple MSN ID's at once? Like for example if I have 3 yahoo accounts, can I have one IM program monitor all three accounts so I can talk to anyone at any time?

Thanks

I believe Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) can do so, just create additional connections.

Trillian. I'm currently using the newest version (Astra) and it's quite an improvement over 3.1.

I can't believe so many people like Pidgin. It looks and performs like a high-schooler's programming final exam.

I highly recommend Digsby if you can find the barebones installer. Highly customizable, frequent updates, and integrates social networks and email.

I'm sorry but Trillian is fucking terrible.

Digsby is supreme and is less of a memory hog than Trillian. VioletArrows speaks truth.

Perhaps it's just me using Astra versus 3.1, but Trillian uses A LOT less memory and resources than Digsby. And the new installer Digsby is using is a joke and a half.

Also, i agree that Pidgin looks and functions horribly.

Trillian sucks because it's ugly, has no useful features that you can't find elsewhere, and is used by morons only. It also sucks because the retards that make it actually think that any version of their shitty program could ever be worth $25 ($25 for a fucking talk-on-the-internet program, wtf), when there are other apps that do this very simple task a million times better for free.

I can't believe so many people like Pidgin. It looks and performs like a high-schooler's programming final exam.

You're right, Pidgin does suck dick. It's actually Gaim, the predecessor to Pidgin, that kicks ass. I just didn't feel like explaining what Gaim is. There is no reason to use anything but the final version of Gaim because it is the perfect IM program.

There is a cure for that:

Oldversion is a really useful website. I would die if I couldn't readily get ahold of Winamp version 2.91, which is by the greatest music playing app ever created (pity that Winamp immediately started to suck balls following that version).

Yeah, that's why I said the barebones installer; they still have one hidden on the website. I installed Windows 7 and was surprised by the new installer, took one look at the first page, hit cancel, and trashed it. As for resources, they're cutting it down all the time, there's a trim on minimize function, and it might be that you have their background 'research' (like SETI but for some pharma com) turned on. Right now for me, it's using about 20,000 with the list and some chat windows open.

That's nothing; they have Netscape 1.0, and Paint Shop Pro back to 2.0 (which is circa 1993, I think). Check out Winamp 0.20, it's quite amusing.

Miranda IM. I've used Trillian, Pidgin, Digsby etc, Miranda uses the least amount of memory (3MB atm, AIM, ICQ, MSN, IRC are open), can be made portable and is infinitely more customizable than the three.

New build came out today for Trillian Astra and with Astra, 2 AIM accounts, and an MSN account connected (4 connections total) and 1 window open, Trillian is using 13MB total. Looks great, runs fast, they've improved it quite a bit over 3.1.

I don't see what the problem is with Pidgin. Sure the developers have a stick up their ass but I found a version that functions well before that happened (2.2.0). Small memory footprint and I can run on nearly any system I own, what's not to like?

I tried Digsby a while back, and that thing was quite the memory hog, not to mention no Linux version at the time. Things may have improved since then, but my first impressions weren't good.

hmm just installed Miranda, seems pretty cool

question: if someone adds you on MSN, does it still show a window saying someone added you and you have the option of blocking or adding the person?

They HAVE improved. Used to suck 50 megs but now it's down to an amazing 10MB. Greatest client ever.

And, yes, I have seen the new installer for it. Whatever pays the bills though.

When did Trillian get out of alpha? Really, I liked Trillian ever since it was .7x, but from a certain point, no matter how many updates or reinstalls I did, it crashed A LOT. Like every 15 minutes. Plus they took away my one favorite feature and made it pay only. That was the last straw and went over to Pidgin, which I hated but at least it worked. I got excited for Astra, and then after about 9 months I gave up waiting for it. It's been what, over 2 years now?

No, mguiddy, they say they're still working on it.

And isn't Miranda OSX only?

I hit beta a month or two ago i think. I've been in the alpha for a while now so i lost track but it'll be out this year. They just reactivated Basic and Pro accounts (and features) so i'd say a couple months max. Good news, prior to this update, when there were no account limits, i was a happy customer (free), and now as a Basic user, i see no difference. I haven't explored much yet but my normal usage has been unaffected so that's good. Here's the most recent build changelog if anyone is interested;

I'm probably late, but I'll throw a couple names I've tried in here.

Gaim
Pigdin
Digsby
Miranda
Adium (Mac)
Meebo (web-based)

I barely chat on yahoo/aim/or msn anymore, so just settle with Meebo. If I had to use a desktop client I'd go back to Digsby. (it's kind of slow, but it's not a memory-hog anymore)

I use 1.5.

If I'm not mistaken, Gaim Beta 2.0 is actually the same thing as the initial release of Pidgin (which was actually initially released starting at version "2.0.0"), before they were forced to change the name due to legal reasons. So, since Gaim Beta 2.0 is basically Pidgin, and I don't like Pidgin, I stick with Gaim 1.5.0. :)
