Complaining about a deal for those of us who still play PS2 games (on the PS3 no less in my case) is also pretty lame. I'd also say the current generation is the PS3, 360, and Wii..considering all those systems have been on the market for a good 2-3 years now.

I agree, complaining about it when they still release PS2 games NEW is stupid. It may be dated but there still is a VERY heavy big user base and is still a good system to play games on.

(I know I ignored the ~$20 P3:FES on Black Friday, but I already had the empty P3:FES and it took a few months to feel like I made a mistake not getting the extras).

I'm not sure that there is really anything close considering the quality and diversity of games. The original PS had an amazing run, and I think the PS2 greatly surpassed that.

I'd love Persona 4...I'd actually love for DDS to put up on there. Don't really want to pay $40 for it. I'm not expecting much based on the previous gold box sales, but there isn't much new stuff coming out anymore, so there isn't a whole lot of new garbage titles they can throw at us.

Yup, you do. I shop from Amazon all the time.

The only exception to this rule is if you buy through the Amazon Marketplace, where they tell you the price of the game and shipping, so you know the final price. There have been times where the sum of several Marketplace purchases plus shipping would cost cheaper than the sum of the same items via Amazon w/FS.

It's BC, except you'll notice a strange black bar at the bottom of the screen at all times...it's where your location would usually be listed, but for some reason, it doesn't show on a PS3 (80 gb, anyways). Also some save issues, but just make a new internal memory card entirely for P4 and it should be fine.

Gameplay is a mix of classic Final Fantasy and Pokemon w/ breeding. You don't "catch" monsters though, you draw a card after the battle to obtain them.

You can set the difficulty to Easy if you're looking for less of a challenge.

It's not super difficult. They let you control your teammates directly now (could only give them general orders in P3), but it still feels a bit harder than P3, which was incredibly easy imo.

You won't have too much trouble if you're just careful about how you play. Don't run in on a group of enemies you've never seen before and blast them with an area of effect fire spell because you never know what monsters with have "reflect fire" and wipe you out. Lots of people complain about the instant death spells, but I am 70 hours in and I haven't lost a character to one yet (though the spells have hit a couple of times, there is an item called Homonculus that takes the hit for you).

I haven't even been super careful about fusions so far, like trying to get a bunch of certain skills on certain Persona; I just go through and fuse all the basic stuff I get through shuffle time and the ones I have in active rotation that outlived their usefulness. If I come across a good combo, that's good, but I don't worry about it too much.

It can be very confusing at first with all the activities you can perform; there are all sorts of different ways to raise stats, you've got all the s-links to worry about, the weather, the phases of the day, etc. A guide can help a lot with this, until you get your feet under you, but it may still take a few months (in game time) before you really get it.

Gameplay is a mix of classic Final Fantasy and Pokemon w/ breeding. You don't "catch" monsters though, you draw a card after the battle to obtain them.

You can set the difficulty to Easy if you're looking for less of a challenge.

A detailed description of Persona 3's(and I assume Persona 4 although I have yet to play it) Battle system:


The game's battle system is pretty fun, and it isn't more difficult than most other rpg's. It can be pretty challenging particularly early on when you aren't familiar with the game or how to approach specific enemies. The game makes you travel through many floors without having the option to save(you can only save at the entrance), which can be frustrating if you die before you get a chance to return to the entrance through a teleporter. There are two types of teleporters, one randomly appears on normal floors, and the other is only on boss floors. the one's that randomly appear allow you to go back to the entrance, but you cannot return to this teleporter and pick back up where you left off,The teleporters on the boss floors are the one's you can return to, if you have activated them by reaching the boss floor and accessed the teleporter on that floor.

You only control the main character's actions in battles in P3, The AI controls the rest of the characters, but you can issue commands which will dictate what type of actions they'll take. Outside of battle you may also issue commands, you can stick together or tell your allies to split up and either explore the area or look for enemies to engage. You can also give them the command to engage enemies while you are in a group together, and when the group comes across an enemy your allies will attack it and go into battle without you. You can heal them from outside of the battle which is a safe way to engage enemies since the only way the game ends is if the main character is killed in battle. the downside is you won't get any exp from doing this. You can't do this to avoid boss fights though, you have to fight them. In P4 you have the option to control everyone's actions.

A key part of the game is finding out an enemy's weakness and exploiting them, while avoiding using attacks that play to their strengths. Most enemy types have a weakness and strength, and there are multiple types of strengths. some make attacks ineffective, some completely nullify any damage taken, some absorb damage taken, while other strengths actually reflect the attack and send it back against you one of your party member's skills can identify enemy /strength/weaknesses and it's important to do so, so the whole party knows exactly what attacks to use against the enemy's and which attacks to avoid. You actually get rewarded an extra attack if you exploit the enemy's weakness. when you hit them with their weakness they fall down and cannot attack for that turn. if you knock all the enemies down and have more than one member in your party you can unleash a team attack which should kill most normal enemies. Hitting an enemy while they're knocked down automatically makes them stand back up(if they aren't killed by the second attack), even if you hit them again with their weakness. You also don't gain an extra attack by hitting a downed opponent with their weakness. Generally you do more damage to a downed opponent than to a standing one.

Strengths/weaknesses also apply to you and your allies, though. Your equipped Persona determines what you're strong/weak against, if you get hit with a weakness you'll get knocked down and will have to stand back up before you can issue another command. If your character is tired he may not get up for a couple of turns if he's knocked down. Your teammates can't change persona's so they'll be strong/weak to the same things in each battle, but since the main character can swap persona's, he can switch to an advantageous persona in each battle.

It's easy to die if you don't pay attention to your weaknesses, but it's also easy to finish off most normal enemies in one turn using only the main character and exploiting the enemy's weaknesses. If the battles feel overwhelming I'd suggest letting the AI take on the battles while you sit outside of battle healing. Then when you have cleared get a stronger Persona you can come back and grind to make up the levels you should have gained. It's best not to send tired/sick characters into battle, since they are weaker and may miss attacks and fall down(which is the same as being knocked down, meaning you'll miss a turn and be vulnerable). Sick characters can actually spread their sickness to others in the party. Characters get tired/sick if they spend too much time battling. Let them stay home and rest and bring the rest of your party members to battle instead. There is nothing stopping you from dragging a tired character along with you, and if you do have one with you you might as well ride them for as long as you can, because as soon as you return to the entrance they will leave your party and return to the dorm.

Persona's are like Pokemon, as you gain levels you can keep more of them with you to call on during battle. You can fuse persona's together to create stronger one's, It will become a new persona with it's own attacks and will carry over some of the attacks from the two persona's that were fused to create it. You can repurchase persona's you've let go or fused, as long as they were recorded with Elizabeth. the first time you capture a persona it will be recorded, but if you want the stronger form of that persona to repurchase later, you will have to manually record it by speaking to elizabeth. There are Unison attacks(I think that's what they're called) which can only be used when you have two specific Persona's in your party that have a Unison attack together. For example, the persona's Angel and Archangel have a unison attack that halves the enemy's hp. You can only use this if you have both angel and archangel with you. Each Persona belongs to a specific Arcana, If you're familiar with Tarot Cards you'll be familiar with the Arcana's. The social aspect of persona plays a role in this, when you fuse persona's together, the resulting persona will gain experience points from the fusion based on it's arcana. each relationship you form in the game is based on an arcana, the stronger that relationship, the more experience points persona's of that arcana will gain when they are created in a fusion.

I'd just as soon like it on the PSP, given I could play it anywhere (including curled up in bed :D ), but oh well :-/

I love Sakaguchi's games, and don't like anything more complex than that. Reviews just don't give me a good indication of what this game is :(

Compared to Final Fantasy, Persona and the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei series are several magnitudes more complex. The game has a lot of variable elements: NPCs and school activities are available on different days at different times, with weather also affecting what's available. The various Personas alter your characters' attributes, your social links between characters affect the performance of your Personas, raising Persona with the skills you want is random, etc. Battles are also tougher than in FF: you often have to exploit your enemies' weaknesses, and it's easy to confuse your skills with names like "Bufu", "Mabufu", "Bufudyne", "Pulinpa", "Tentarafoo", though there are descriptions available. It's almost impossible to finish this game without consulting a guide or board at least once, and in my opinion, that's just bad game design.
