View Full Version : "Worthless" games: what to do with them?

I have a few old PS2/XBOX games that won't ever sell on craigslist. Trading on Goozex/eBay is a waste of time, and EB will give pennies for it. So what can I do with them? I was thinking about donating them, since they're sports games and thus kid-friendly.
Thanks.

Perhaps a local hospital or other charity service would like them. Daycares, even? Phone around and ask if they'd accept donations. Or pawn shops might even be suckered in for a couple bucks a pop.

Give em to the VPL. They do catalog the occasional game here and there. Worst case scenario they just toss it in with their yearly book sale stuff, and make a few dollars themselves.

Does your local post office have a collection box for Canadian Military overseas. Mine collects books, magazines, candy, toiletries ect. and mails them.

I suppose if you wanted to do a charity, you could pick up a second-hand console that those games will play on, then donate the console plus the whole lot of games. I'm sure the kids' ward in your local hospital will be very grateful for that. You might even get a tax receipt.

We've taken crappy old games before as donations to the "Child's Play" charity. It isn't much, but it's better than throwing them out. Basically, you give us the games, and instead of getting store credit, we put some cash in a pool and at the end of the year we give all the cash to the charity. Last year we donated approx. $50 to the sick kids at BC Children's Hospital.

I'm pretty sure we all have lots of games around. It might be a decent idea to gather them and donate to places like Children's hospital.

Send them to me and I'll make monthly giveaways on tivs.ca for games
Although, if you don't want em I wonder if anybody else would
I'm in the process of amazon'ing all the games to referrals and planned on having lotteries for the amazon gift cards I earned (assuming people actually buy stuff from the referrals...), as well as possibly having lottery style auctions for regular games...possibly having say 70 $1 entries into a game lottery, then at the end of a specified period draw a random winner (which would have to be double-blind to prevent people from thinking it's fixed...) and that would cover the game+shipping. Dunno, was just a thought.

I'm probably gonna start one for CHEO soon, even though I don't have many myself.

From CHEO's website
Infection control and patient safety
Due to our infection control guidelines, patient allergies and limited space, we cannot accept any food products, used items such as used toys, used stuffed animals, used books and used electronic games and videos.
While many used stuffed animals and toys appear new and clean, we still cannot accept them because they may have been exposed to germs, dust and bacteria. All of these create a risk to our patients who have fragile immune systems.
That's too bad but it makes sense. Hopefully they'll connect with Child's Play I like the ease of donation with the Amazon.ca list that some of the other hospital's in Canada have.

You could list the games somewhere, you never know who might want a particular game! Personally, I'd be interested in seeing what you had stashed away!

All complete to boot. I bought them a couple years ago for EB's free movie ticket promo. :)

I've though of them before too. I'd love to support the kids there with some fun games. They do take money donations.
"Organizations, service clubs, or groups wanting to donate items to CHEO during the holiday season or in honour of a special occasion, are invited to make a financial donation to our Special Occasion fund. Proceeds from the Special Occasion fund will be used throughout the year, as the need arises, to purchase toys, craft supplies and electronic games for our playrooms and child life program."
That sounds a least hopeful :) Here's the link for the info http://www.cheo.on.ca/english/1400.shtml

I've been participating CHEO Telethon for last few years. I just hoped my unwanted games could become someone else's fun.

I can understand. I usually give them to my neighbors kids for their enjoyment. Their Mom usually gives my sons sports equipment, toys and stuff too.

my nephew had a few :xbox: games and he just got a new PSP and in his young and misguided way he thinks Ratchet and Clank is a horrible game so he gathered up all his games minus Halo and Fusion Frenzy (because he couldn't find the disc in time) and I took him to EB to trade. He took in 9 games including a brand new Riddick (I got for him during a GoGamer sale), Test Drive, Black Hawk and a few others and he got $7.41 in store credit.
Riddick :xbox: was a good game. Shame. In the store he was kinda jazzed to pick out his new PSP game and needless to say that didn't happen. I just hope in the future I'll now be able to deter him from such transactions.

You could save them until you have enough to make a lamp :)

With just those ones there is probably nothing to do with them. If you had some slightly better ones too you could sell them on ebay as a lot, and get more then by just selling the better ones by having "10 game lot" or whatever. mailing them disc only you can send a pile cheap if they are arranged right in the envelope
thats how I got rid of the PS1 discs i got during the moive pass promo "Ps1 game lot disc only". Didnt get much, net a dollar or so each after costs, but they only cost me 1.99-2.99 to get the movie pass so nice to recover part of it as a bonus.

I'd recommend donating them to a hospital so kids can play them, it really brightens their day. If there too violent, or for other reasons, discs make excellent and stylish coasters for drinks.
